Editors - Andrew Buckland ACE and Scott Morris A COMPLETE UNKNOWN editors Andrew Buckland, ACE and Scott Morris came into James Mangold's latest film being almost completely unknown to one another.  Aside from mutual acquaintances, the two had never worked together or even met prior to this film.  In spite of this, their combined talents tackled a big film that featured forty live performances and an aggressive post schedule. Co-written and directed by James Mangold, A COMPLETE UNKNOWN takes place in the early 1960s, when 19-year-old Bob Dylan arrives in New York with his guitar and revolutionary talent, destined to change the course of American music.  Forming his most intimate relationships during his rise to fame, he grows restless with the folk movement, making a controversial choice that reverberates worldwide. ANDREW BUCKLAND, ACE Andrew Buckland ACE is an Academy Award winning film editor who won the Oscar for his work on FORD v FERRARI alongside Michael McCusker ACE.  He received his B.F.A. in Film from Purchase College before transitioning into editing. Landing his first job on Alan Pakula's THE DEVIL'S OWN, Andrew has been a part of the editorial teams on many high-profile films including Mike Nichol's CLOSER and CHARLIE WILSON'S WAR.  Andrew subsequently directed two documentary films THE LONG WALL HOME and SOMOS WICHI, which won the 2012 Documentary Expose Award at The Peace On Earth Film Festival, Chicago USA.  Andrew began his collaboration with James Mangold on KNIGHT AND DAY and THE WOLVERINE, and later edited FORD v FERRARI, and INDIANA JONES AND THE DIAL OF DESTINY. Other credits include Co-Editing Tate Taylor's THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN and Additional Editing GET ON UP. SCOTT MORRIS Scott Morris is a film editor with over 10 years' experience. He has collaborated with directors James Mangold, James Gray, Adam McKay and Gareth Edwards. In 2022 he was named one of Variety's top 10 Artisans To Watch.  His last film, THE CREATOR was nominated for two Oscars. His previous collaborations with James Gray on ARMAGEDDON TIME and AD ASTRA were selected for competition in the Cannes and Venice film festivals respectively. Ad Astra went on to be nominated for an Oscar. He worked as an additional editor on Adam McKay's film, DON'T LOOK UP. It was nominated for 4 Oscars, including Best Film Editing for Hank Corwin. Made when Gray was just 23 years old, it's a semi-autobiographical story that merges a character study of an estranged Russian-Jewish family with elements of the crime genre to arrive at something that pulls from the films of Francis Ford Coppola, Sidney Lumet and Luchino Visconti in equal measure. We begin by discussing the career of James Gray, his undersung filmography, and his reputation as a notoriously great interview subject. Then we explore the world of 'Little Odessa', its melodramatic flourishes, stunning camerawork, and deliberate tone and pacing. Finally, we look forward to what might be next for Gray as a filmmaker, having last released the film 'Armageddon Time' which functions as a compelling bookend to the director's three decades in filmmaking.Read Eamon's recent piece on 'The Battle of Algiers' and its relation to Palestinian resistance for The Hampton InstituteFollow Eamon Tracy on Twitter....Our theme song is "Mirror" by Chris Fish.

Two weeks ago, a trailer was released for the new Leonard Bernstein biopic Maestro. Immediately, controversy surfaced about Bradley Cooper—the director of the film who also stars as Bernstein—wearing a prosthetic nose, intended to resemble Bernstein's own formidable schnoz. Because Cooper is not Jewish, this also revived a conversation about so-called Jewface, a term that has, over the last several years, become a buzzword in conversations about non-Jews being cast as Jews in dramatic roles. In this episode, Jewish Currents editor-in-chief Arielle Angel talks to contributing writer Rebecca Pierce, author and theater critic Alisa Solomon, and writer and collector of “Jewface” artifacts Jody Rosen about the controversy—exploring the long history of “Jewface” performances and what's really underneath these repeated dust-ups over Jewish representation. Thanks to Jesse Brenneman for producing and to Nathan Salsburg for the use of his song “VIII (All That Were Calculated Have Passed).”Articles, podcasts, and further reading:Trailer for Maestro, directed by Bradley Cooper“The Politics of ‘Jewface,'” Rebecca Pierce, Jewish CurrentsJewface: ‘Yiddish' Dialect Songs of Tin Pan Alley, YIVO exhibitionJody Rosen discusses “Jewface” on PBS“A ‘Merchant of Venice' That Doubles Down on Pain,” Alexis Soloski, The New York Times“Fables and Lies,” On the Nose podcast about Armageddon Time and The Fabelmans“On the Nose,” inaugural On the Nose podcast, discussing our Spring 2021 Nose cover

This week on On Story, a conversation with acclaimed writer, director, and producer James Gray to discuss not only his artistic process, but how he established himself as one the industry's most talented writer-directors.  A true visionary, Gray made his directorial debut with his celebrated film Little Odessa, which earned him nominations for both Best First Feature and Best First Screenplay at the 1994 Independent Spirit Awards. Other esteemed features in Gray's canon include The Yards, starring Joaquin Phoenix, who is in fact a frequent collaborator of Gray's, and We Own the Night, starring Mark Wahlberg, in addition to his films, Two Lovers, The Immigrant, The Lost City of Z, and Ad Astra, all of which set the bar for both screenwriting and direction.  Gray's most recent feature, Armageddon Time, is a deeply personal film inspired by Gray's childhood. A reflection on the strength of family, the complexity of friendship, and the realities of class as seen through the eyes of a young Jewish boy growing up in 1980s Queens, the film's star-studded cast includes leading actors Anthony Hopkins, Anne Hathaway, and Jeremy Strong.  In addition to speaking with Gray on his process of writing and directing each of his seven critically-acclaimed feature films, AFF was eager to honor Gray with our coveted Bill Wittliff Award for Screenwriting, an annual award presented to leading storytellers within film, television and new media. Gray adds this accolade to his five Palme d'Or nominations, as well as the Silver Lion Award.  During our annual Writers Conference, Barbara Morgan sat down with Gray to discuss how he became a pillar of American filmmaking.  Ad Astra clips courtesy of Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation. 2022 was definitely the everything bagel of movie years. No less an authority than Stephen Spielberg anointed Tom Cruise as the savior of movies this summer, which made sense given the success of "Top Gun: Maverick". Then came the fall, and excellent movies were released…and no one showed up. And even when they did, as with the $2.2 billion dollar gross accumulated by James Cameron's "Dances with Smurfs Part Deux", the movies barely seemed to make a dent in the cultural landscape. It didn't help that so many of our beloved directors released crappy movies: Aronofsky with the odious "The Whale", Russell with his how-could-it possibly-go-wrong-with-that-cast disaster "Amsterdam", Alex Garland with the puzzling (and not in an interesting way) "Men", Iñarritú inadvertently reminding us how brilliant both "Roma" and "8 ½" are with "Bardo", and the literal crapfest (elephant, in this case) that was "Babylon". Sometimes, it felt like 2022 was a living, breathing argument against the auteur theory. Yet there were some very good spots too, including not one but two really interesting portrait-of-the-filmmaker-as-a-young-man movies with "Fabelmans" and "Armageddon Time". The scene of the year? Cate Blanchett as Lydia Tar (née Linda Tarr of Staten Island!) arguing with one of her students about the pointlessness of cancelling Bach in Todd Fields' most welcome return. "Everything Everywhere" became the only film in history to win three acting Oscars and Best Picture. Underappreciated gems like "The Menu" and (sorry, John and Michael) "Don't Worry Darling", and even appreciated ones like "Aftersun" wormed their way into our brains and didn't let go, though I will never look at s'mores the same way again. And we even had a solid Oscars ceremony, with powerhouse performances by Rihanna and Lady Gaga and nearly an epic battle between Malala and Cocaine Bear. Plus, we got perhaps the most sublime moment in American film this century: David Lynch playing John Ford in a Spielberg film. That glorious scene almost took away the sour taste of the “Look, I'm doing Bergman!” montage of film history that ended "Babylon" not nearly soon enough. And while we liked "EO" better when it was "Au Hasard Balthasar", and "Living" better when it was "Ikiru", and we thought that the Siegfried Sassoon biopic "Benediction" was a better World War I film than "All Quiet", there were definitely some tasty tidbits to be found on that everything bagel. An up and down year, but to paraphrase the wondrous Lashana Lynch as Miss Honey in Matilda, it wasn't much, but it was enough for us.

This week on On Story, AFF Moderator and Senior Programmer, Andy Volk, sat down with writer, director, and producer James Gray for a post-screening Q&A of his coming-of-age drama, Armageddon Time. A deeply personal film inspired by Gray's childhood, Armageddon Time is a reflection on the strength of family, the complexity of friendship, and the realities of class as seen through the eyes of a young Jewish boy growing up in 1980s Queens. Through the brilliant performances of its all-star cast, which includes leading actors such as Anthony Hopkins, Anne Hathaway and Jeremy Strong, Armageddon Time is a beautiful, detailed, and intimate portrait of how privilege, inequality, and prejudice are integral to the American experience. AFF was ecstatic to welcome the preeminent writer-director James Gray, not only to speak more about the film but also to honor him as the 2022 recipient of AFF's coveted Bill Wittliff Award for Screenwriting, an annual award presented to leading storytellers within film, television, and new media. Loosely inspired by writer/director Charlotte Wells' own childhood experiences with her father, this haunting piece of fiction is a charming coming of age story set against a pervasive and foreboding sense of sadness. “Asa Nisi Masa:” 8 ½ at Sixty It is an intriguing coincidence that perhaps the two greatest films ever made about the creative breakthroughs and heartbreaks involved in making a film are both celebrating major anniversaries in 2023. First, Federico Fellini's raucous, post-modern celebration of his own creative process, "8 ½" turns sixty. It's important to note, though, that while we see no filmmaking in that film, the actual portrayal of the logistical and emotional vicissitudes of film creation are very much at the heart of François Truffaut's much-beloved "Day for Night", which itself turns fifty this year. We will focus most of our time in this episode on Fellini's film, taking our intrepid listeners on a tour that begins with an opening that stands as the most brilliant metaphor for creative blockage ever put on film, all the way through the end with the circus band playing Nino Rota's indelible march as every character we've seen from the director's past and present joins hands and dances in perhaps the most life-affirming moment in all of film. We then use Fellini's work as a springboard to discuss the other films about filmmaking that we love, starting with "Day for Night", and bringing in works ranging in tone from Assayas' "Irma Vep" to Jonze's "Adaptation" to Burton's loving tribute to Ed Wood. Finally, we'll take a quick peek at this year's two great portraits of the filmmaker as a young man, Gray's "Armageddon Time" and Spielberg's "The Fabelmans" (though honestly, I'd take J.J. Abrams' "Super 8" over either of them). But it's important to keep in mind that all of these wonderful films probably never even come close to happening without Fellini blazing the trail. To paraphrase the master himself, he may have had nothing to say, but fortunately for all of us, he found the most brilliant way to say it all the same. Grazie mille, maestro!

With a Broadway career spanning over 50 years, Tovah Feldshuh takes us through her journey as she shares her life as an actress, wife, and mother. While she loves politics, it's her love of people that motivates her to fight for what she believes in and help in every way that she can. Initially determined to go to Harvard Law School to stay close to her father, her brother encouraged her to apply for the McKnight Fellowship in acting and was eventually chosen as one of the four to attend the fellowship. This trajectory change was the beginning of Tovah's pursuit of becoming an actor, which to her is "so much cheaper than therapy". Tovah talks about her role as Mrs. Brice in "Funny Girl" and bringing a level of humanity and relatability to her character, and her memoir, “Lilyville: Mother, Daughter, and Other Roles I've Played” which explores mother-daughter relationships, and her complex relationship with her mother. Married for 46 years, she shares what makes their marriage work. Tovah intends to keep acting for as long as she can, mainly motivated by her love of people and making connections. Tovah Feldshuh is an actress, singer, and playwright who's been a Broadway star for more than four decades now, which earned her Tony Award nominations and two Emmy Award nominations. She made her Broadway debut in the 1973 musical "Cyrrano". Her other stage credits include "Saravá", "Lend Me a Tenor", "Golda's Balcony", “Dreyfus in Rehearsal”, “Lend Me a Tenor”, “Golda's Balcony”, "Irena's Vow", "Pippin", and "Yentl". She made her cabaret debut with her act, "Tovah: Crossovah! From Broadway to Cabaret", followed by "Tovah: Out of Her Mind!" and was selected as Best Cabaret Artist of 2000 by the Boston Globe. Tovah has also appeared in numerous tv shows, including "Ryan's Hope", "Holocaust", "Mariah", "As the World Turns", "Law & Order", "Flesh and Bone", "The Walking Dead", "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend", and "Star Wars Resistance". Her film credits include "Kissing Jessica Stein", "Just My Luck", "She's Funny That Way", and "Armageddon Time". For Peter Kujawski, chairman of Focus Features, it was “very simple and easy” to greenlight James Gray's drama “Armageddon Time.” Gray had written the script before the pandemic shut down of March 2020. By that Summer, Kujawski got a call from Roeg Sutherland, a talent agent from CAA, saying he had something that he should look at. Sutherland knew Kujawski was a “gigantic fan” of Gray's work and he was in a position to say yes to the project. “I was predisposed because of my fanship,” Kujawski reveals. “The movie literally could have been about young James Gray just building a model rocket, and I would have wanted to do it.” Gray, who also produced and directed the film, says he didn't know of Kujawski's admiration. “This is fabulous to hear!” Now Gray and Kujawski discuss “Armageddon Time,” the challenges of making the film during the pandemic, their careers, and Gray's bad experience working with former film producer Harvey Weinstein. But first, Kim Masters and Matt Belloni talk about another producer, Eric Weinberg, the criminal charges against him, and the “club” culture of complicity that allowed him to keep getting jobs in Hollywood.

James Gray's "Armageddon Time" had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year and later screened at the Telluride and New York Film Festivals before releasing in theaters last week from Focus Features. The film tells the personal childhood story of a young James Grey (played by Banks Repeta as Paul Graff) growing up in 1980s Queens, New York, during a time of social and political change that was sweeping the country. Jeremy Strong, who plays Paul's father Irving, was on hand with Gray to discuss their work on the film alongside another interview I conducted with Banks Repeta, who went into detail about what it was like working with Strong, Anne Hathaway, and the legendary Anthony Hopkins and more. For this week's main podcast review, I am joined by Josh Parham and Dan Bayer. Together we're reviewing the newest film from director James Gray, "Armageddon Time," starring Jeremy Strong, Anne Hathaway, Banks Repeta, Jaylin Webb & Anthony Hopkins. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and is now playing in theaters from Focus Features as it tells the story of Gray's childhood as a young kid growing up in a Jewish-American household in 1980s Queens, New York. What did we think of the writing, performances, and how Gray handled the more sensitive topics of the story, all the while telling a coming-of-age story devoid of nostalgia?
