Tax havens in offshore lands like Switzerland, the Cayman Islands and the Bahamas were once considered a rarity, the preserve of the super-rich. Today, they are big business available to the masses. Their goal? To avoid any form of accountability. Own nothing. Possess everything. Be answerable to no one. Where are these tax havens? What forms can they take? What future lies in store for them, and why should we care? An Anatomy of Tax Havens: Europe, the Caribbean and the United States of America (de Gruyter, 2023) answers these questions, and more, in the first comparative study in one volume of European, Caribbean and United States tax havens. It examines their simple origin to the extreme forms some take today, delving into the murky subculture that has deliberately made them impenetrably obscure. Uniquely, it combines detailed technical expertise (regulatory regimes, financial crime, legal and equitable structuring) with an analysis of their impact on domestic and global political, economic, environmental and social concerns. An Anatomy of Tax Havens is a fascinating, informative read for a broad readership; from legal, accountancy and tax practitioners to compliance regulators, law enforcement agencies, and students and researchers interested in business studies, taxation, and crime. Paul R. Beckett is a Lawyer and Academic, specializing in company, commercial and trust law; banking and fund management; cryptocurrencies and the blockchain. He practices on the Isle of Man. Today, we're looking at the rising separatist movement in Alberta and Saskatchewan, with new polling data showing around 25% to 30% support for the motion prior to the election — only for that number to have climbed to 36% following Mark Carney and the Liberals' fourth straight consecutive electoral victory. Plus, Rebel boss Ezra Levant took a short trip to Bermuda, where he investigated Carney's firm, Brookfield Asset Management's ties to the notorious tax haven. And finally, unemployment in Canada is nearing 7% and the Bank of Canada warned yesterday that a prolonged trade war poses a serious threat to the national economy.

Sark - a tiny, self-governing island in the English Channel that has no income or capital gains taxes - is home to just 600 people. For years, the car-and-crime-free island's population was in decline and struggled to sustain even the most basic services. That was until German entrepreneur Swen Lorenz showed up in 2017 and began singing the island's praises across the European continent. By 2021, when we first covered the story, Lorenz's efforts had already driven a 20% increase in the island's population. Now, after years of planning, Lorenz is making what could be the biggest move of his career: He has plans to raise some GBP 70 million over the next several years to renovate and redevelop as much as 40% of the crown dependency's total land area and more than double its population. "We want to purchase and refurbish neglected properties, aiming to revitalize the island and attract new residents through the Sark Property Company," said Lorenz during his appearance on IMI's podcast. "Our vision is to make Sark one of the best places in the world to live, and not just for the wealthy."We asked Lorenz a range of questions, including:What is it like to live on Sark, and what kind of people does he hope to attract? How can you get residency there? Why are so many of the island's properties in a state of disrepair? What does his company plan to do once it has acquired 40% of the island? What kind of returns does he foresee for investors? How many people does Sark have room for? What do the locals think of his redevelopment plans?

Historically Thinking: Conversations about historical knowledge and how we achieve it

We're going to do something a little differently in today's episode of Historically Thinking, in that it's not an episode of Historically Thinking. Instead I wanted to share with you a teaser of a podcast that I think you'll like. It's hosted by Jason Pack, our guest on episode 337, and it's called Disorder. It's produced by GoalHanger podcasts, the UK's number 1 podcasting company, makers of The Rest is History, hosted by friends of this podcast Tom Holland and Dominic Sandbrook. Disorder is hosted by Jason and former British diplomat Alexandra Hall Hall. The pod tackles small and easy questions like: how did the world get so disordered? What are the fundamental principles behind our current era of geopolitics? And how do seemingly disparate challenges from AI, to Climate Change, to Wars in the Middle East and Ukraine, to Tax Havens, to Unregulated Cyberspace all interact with each other and feed into our era of Global Enduring Disorder? The first full season of episodes are out now – you can find them by searching Disorder or by following the links in the show notes. For me, the Disorder pod hits on many of the same themes as Historically Thinking (that is how a range of of seemingly disparate historical phenomenon are actually interlinked), but tackles this phenomenon through  conceptual investigation with the doers of geopolitics rather than via an interview based podcast with historians. So since I think you'll enjoy it, I wanted to give our listeners a little taste of what Disorder sounds like. We are going to tune in to episode 11, where Jason and Alex spoke with Jonathan Powell, Tony Blair's former Chief of Staff. They present an overview of  some humorous anecdotes from the Northern Ireland peace process and what they can tell us about what factors lead to successful negotiations and how we might be able to draw upon these lessons in the Middle East and Ukraine. You can find that episode in full as well as Jason's proposed plans for the post-war Govenance of Gaza by following the links in the show notes. Now over to Jason and Alex for that teaser… For Further Investigation Listen to the Disorder podcast here: Read Jason's ‘The Road to Middle East Peace Runs Through Doha'

We dig into the US as an offshore jurisdiction and how the systems function. We talk about strong asset protection and wealth protection laws in the USA and that most CPAs don't understand that the US is the largest tax haven in the world.  One of the biggest concerns Jim's clients have is about information sharing. It's a big concern, and listen to why that is. If you are a tax resident of any country outside the US, doing a service business, an e-commerce business, or some kind of coaching business, Jim shares a ton of information for you.  Understanding the tax laws of the country you live in or pay taxes to is highly important. It's one of the many aspects of my business that I help people with daily. Jim lets us in on his favourite states for setting up structures and what you should look for. The bottom line is Jim can help you and your business make more money and pay less in taxes.  RELATED EPISODES 181: Living Overseas With Your Family And How To Make Your Expat Experience A Raving Success 190: How To Build A Self-Sustaining Libertarian Community In Latin America – Patrick Hiebert 214: Stacking Laws Like LEGO Blocks To Secure Your Freedom – Patri Friedman HOW TO REACH JAMES BAKER www.expatmoneyshow.com/cpa to book a call with Jim.
