This week I’m going to tell you part 2 of the kidnapping of Elizabeth Smart.
This week I’m going to tell you a story that’s every parent’s worst nightmare, this is the kidnapping of Elizabeth Smart.
His daughter and family have been through indescribable trauma. Ed Smart’s daughter Elizabeth was kidnapped by Brian David Mitchell and Wanda Barzee in June of 2002. Her miraculous safe return happened after nine torturous months of search, praying, and hoping. Since then, Ed and Elizabeth have become outspoken advocates for missing and exploited children with the Elizabeth Smart Foundation. But under the turmoil of this whole experience and aftermath, lay a deep anxiety the Ed had carried since he was 12 years old. After decades of marriage, six children, and life as an active Latter-day Saint (Mormon), Ed could no longer maintain what for him was a grotesque façade. After a crisis in faith, Ed finally admitted to his wife Lois of 33 years, that he is gay. And bombshell after bombshell, he informed each of his children, the Smart’s close friends, and finally the public. Bob Evans with FOX 13 News in Salt Lake City sat down with Ed Smart in December of 2019 for a 3 Questions interview.
Join us as Katie and Rory co-host the story of Elizabeth Smart, who was only 14 when she was abducted from her bedroom to be the sister-wife to Brian David Mitchell and Wanda Barzee.
One of our favorite guests on our podcast, Nobody Told Me!, has been Elizabeth Smart. As you’re probably aware, in 2002, when she was 14, Elizabeth was kidnapped at knifepoint by a pedophile from her home in Utah. She endured nine months of being shackled, raped, starved and threatened by her kidnapper, Brian David Mitchell, and his wife, Wanda Barzee, before she was rescued and reunited with her family. Elizabeth answered our questions about the kidnapping itself and her recovery from it, as a teenager who’d experience far more pain and trauma in nine months than most of us will go through in a lifetime.

In 2002, when she was just fourteen years old, Elizabeth Smart was kidnapped at knifepoint by a pedofile from her home in Utah. She endured nine months of being shackled, raped, starved, and threatened by her kidnappers, Brian David Mitchell and his wife, Wanda Barzee, before she was rescued and reunited with her family. Her new book, "Where There's Hope: Healing, Moving Forward, and Never Giving Up", is an inspiring read and is available through booksellers everywhere.
