For their 195th episode, two imposter film critics, two murderous dads, and two non-Italian school teachers, Will Johnson and Don Shanahan, stay in the monumental year of 1999 for one more week with another cornerstone film. Lapped at the time by the likes of "The Matrix," "American Beauty," "Magnolia," and "Fight Club," stands the late Anthony Minghella's salacious "The Talented Mr. Ripley" starring the early white-hot coals of Matt Damon, Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Philip Seymour Hoffman. Minghella's follow-up to his Oscar-winning "The English Patient," might have aged better than those previously mentioned 1999 bangers, and our guys are here to dote on its top-to-bottom lavishness. Come learn more and stay for the mutual love and respect that fun movies encapsulate.

Jonathan Tetelman is quickly becoming one of the opera world's most in-demand tenors — not only for the distinctive radiance and warmth of his voice, but also for the wide palette of emotions he brings to the characters he portrays. But as I discovered during a recent sit-down with Tetelman, early in his career the Chilean-American singer had many doubts about whether he could take on the deeply dramatic roles he's become known for. In fact, he almost pulled out of one of his first big European engagements — portraying Paolo in Riccardo Zandonai's Francesca da Rimini at Deutsche Oper Berlin — because of that self-doubt. "I knew the story and thought it would be a good challenge for me," Tetelman shared in our conversation. "But as I was preparing the role, I noticed how heavy and difficult the role was, and I almost pulled the plug on the whole thing, because I felt like I wasn't ready to do it." Then the Covid-19 pandemic forced the world into lockdown, which gave Tetelman six months to immerse himself in the role, unpack its complexities, and build the mental and physical fortitude he needed to make Paolo a character of flesh and blood — not an easy feat for a young singer. "To perform this very dramatic role at 32 was really kind of an eye-opening experience, and an exciting possibility for me to perform other dramatic repertoire in the future. At the time I was really only singing things like Rodolfo and Alfredo, much more lyric repertoire. To get a taste of the verismo, it hooked me immediately." Tetelman credits his success in that production to its director, Christof Loy. "It was the first time I worked with a director who helped me bring out my characterization, and also helped me understand the characterization of my colleagues in a better way. Working with him really challenged me, but it was the thing that was kind of missing in my presentation. From then on I used a lot of the tools and ideas that he gave me for this production." Those tools and ideas have only increased Tetelman's meteoric rise in the years since that Deutsche Oper Berlin production. His first two albums for Deutsche Grammophon, 2022's Arias and last year's The Great Puccini, received rave reviews, with the former winning Tetelman the 2023 Opus Klassik Award for Young Talent of the Year. And this month he's bringing the nuanced approach to character-building he honed with Loy to two major Puccini role debuts at the Metropolitan Opera: Ruggero in a new production of La Rondine, and the naval officer Pinkerton in Anthony Minghella's Madama Butterfly. For Tetelman, building a legacy in the opera world now means not only bringing artistry to the music he performs, but also caring for the characters represented in opera — and helping audiences see themselves in the emotional turmoil and triumph these characters experience. "They're supposed to be human and they're supposed to be full of emotion and everything that embodies humanity. And I think the music is just the vessel that allows us to feel those emotions. I want to be one of those people who can really bring those things out, and help other people understand and feel what these characters feel." Madama Butterfly is on stage at the Metropolitan Opera through May 11. Tetelman's latest album, The Great Puccini, is available across all major streaming platforms. — Classical Post® is created and produced by Gold Sound Media® LLC, a leading New York marketing agency serving the performing arts industry. As part of the so-called Britart generation of the early 1990's, artist Sam Taylor-Wood, as she was then known, made her name with photographic and video pieces. Diagnosed with colon cancer in 1997, and then breast cancer three years later, she addressed her treatment and recovery in artworks she made at the time. She moved into filmmaking with her first feature Nowhere Boy, about the life of the young John Lennon in 2009. Other cinematic projects have included adaptations of the E L James novel 50 Shades Of Gray, the James Frey memoir A Million Little Pieces and, most recently, the Amy Winehouse biopic Back To Black.Sam tells John Wilson about the experience of first seeing the Rothko Seagram paintings at the Tate gallery when she was nine years old, and the impact that they had on her in her creative imagination. Being introduced to Andy Warhol films such as Chelsea Girls and Empire made her realise that art and cinema are deeply intertwined and went on to influence her style as a director. John Cassavetes' A Woman Under the Influence was the first film that made Sam want to be a cinematic filmmaker and she also reveals how Oscar-winning director Anthony Minghella encouraged her to make her debut short film Love You More. And that's despite the fact that it makes some pretty substantial changes to the source text and the title character. In this episode, we compare and contrast the book and the film, discuss Highsmith's complicated reputation and how her own personal demons infused her work, discover just how many new elements writer/director Anthony Minghella added to the story, and touch on some of the other Ripley adaptations and the upcoming TV series.    Facebook | Twitter | Instagram Apple Podcasts | Stitcher | Google Play | Spotify Chris's Instagram & Twitter | Kristen's Instagram Chris & Kristen's Web Series: The Strange Case of Lucy Chandler Chris's Substack Newsletter: Chris Fights Demons

Hey film buds,In this episode we're finishing our eight-decade journey of Historic Best Picture Winners with The Last Emperor from the 80s and The English Patient from the 90s. Though there is a lot that happens behind the scenes to win an Academy Award, let alone a Best Picture win, they still work as an interesting way to view the history of film and what was popular at the time. We're also finishing up the month with two films that both utilize extensive flashbacks.Intro & Best Pictures From 1927 to 1996 - 00:00The Last Emperor Clip - 16:14The Last Emperor Review - 16:49The Last Emperor was directed by Bernardo Bertolucci in 1987, and tells the story of China's last emperor, Pu Yi, who reigned for several decades in the twentieth century. The film is loosely based his own autobiography and covers a wide swath of history. We'll discuss how effectively the flashbacks are used, and what their perspectives tell us about the man.The English Patient Clip - 53:19The English Patient Review - 53:55Comparing Flashback Devices, Oscar News, What We're Watching, and Outro - 01:16:12The English Patient from 1996 and directed by Anthony Minghella is an epic, war-time romance set in Africa. The film works, on a. certain level as a mystery, and that is largely due to the missing information the audience is discovering along the way. Is our narrator reliable and are his flashbacks valid? We'll discuss it, along with the way other films have used extensive flashbacks to tell their story.Beyond our reviews, we're also going to talk about the Oscars and #PresentAll23, What We're Watching, and more.
