Italy is a magical place. Come and walk down the road to the restaurant where you can smell the sea breeze and the scent of garlic on the air. Come inside and see the family work together harmoniously as they weave the magic of the kitchen for everyone to enjoy. Follow one sister as she finds trouble, follow another sister as she finds more trouble than she could have ever imagined. Italian witches, hell, and demon princes run around on an Italian island trying to solve a crime. Oh, and there's a magical bargain. Oh, and the witch and demon are mortal enemies. Oh, and we're reminded of that fact a lot. It's Kingdom of the Wicked where the tattoos are purple and pockets are filled with chalk. Pockets for the win! Notes:Fable and the Verbivore reference a line that has two levels of meaning in the narrative where Xiomara's body is talked about by her mother. That line is “a little too much body for such a young girl.”The Verbivore mentions having watched videos of Elizabeth Acevedo performing her poetry. Here are some of the videos:I use my poetry to confront the violence against women | Elizabeth Acevedo | TEDxMidAtlanticSalon Pages Matam, Elizabeth Acevedo & G. Yamazawa – “Unforgettable” Elizabeth Acevedo - "Afro-Latina"Elizabeth Acevedo - "Hair"Fable and the Verbivore reference several parts from We Hunt the Flame where author Hafsah Faizal breaks out words to give them added force. Here is an example:Nasirfell apartat the seams. The Verbivore mentions a quote from author Laurie Halse Anderson about including hope in YA stories. Here is that quote:“Ending on an encouraging note is part of my moral code. Teenagers need to see a model of hope and growth.”And Laurie Halse Anderson's blurb for The Poet X is - “a story that will slam the power of poetry and love back into your heart.” Books & Movies Mentioned:The Poet X by Elizabeth AcevedoJurassic Park by Michael CrichtonWe Hunt the Flame by Hafsah FaizalMusic from: https://filmmusic.io 'Friendly day' by Kevin MacLeod (https://incompetech.com) Licence: CC BY (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/)
Light it up Danika! Light it up! Light it up! Light it up! Have you forgotten everything about Crescent City (House of Earth and Blood) except the pain and intense ugly crying? Worry not because Laura Marie and Jessica Marie have nailed down the (probably not all of them, the book is thicc) details and are ready to discuss why a DC villain is the only way that Hunt can be seen from now on. No really. There are also discussions about friendships, Easter eggs, and general gushing about Bryce. This was recorded BEFORE the leak was released. So no worries about any sort of spoilers. Lit & Liquor's triumphant return with the first of our brand new episodes is somewhat diminished by book quality this week, but don't worry, we pull through the good and the bad like always. Mostly with the aid of, you guessed it, extra liquor. Pulling us through the rough patches this week is a Dowager Empress, a drink of Kassandra's creation featuring our Liquor of the Week, Empress 1908 Gin. This delicious drink was paired with two books that were decidedly less pleasant on the palate: "We Hunt the Flame" by Hafsah Faizal, and "A Memory Called Empire" by Arkady Martine. It is in these books which we learned that you totally can have brain surgery in a black market alley and go on to save the world a mere 11 hours later, or make a dark ninja assassin hero too angsty for even Kassandra and Ashley to enjoy--a feat they would have said was completely impossible. As sadly happens so often on L&L...we were proved wrong. Welcome back to our brand new and current bi-weekly episodes, folks. We've missed you all.

Since 2010 author and designer Hafsah Faisal has been writing about books on her blog Icy Books, and now she's celebrating the launch of her own Arabian culture inspired fantasy debut. We Hunt the Flame is about a girl who braves an enchanted darkness to keep her people alive, a prince who kills on behalf of his father, and their unexpectedly shared quest to bring magic back to their world. Faisal joined Melissa Albert for a chat about inspired design, great fantasy maps and the spark that became We Hunt the Flame.
