Reportage Afrique

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 3, 2025 2:27

», lui demande-t-on.

Palestinian filmmaker Basma al-Sharif dives into her award-winning pieces to discuss film as performance art. This discussion leads into the role of activism in the arts and the ways film responds to and comments on current events.Kunafa and Shay is a podcast produced for HowlRound Theatre Commons by co-hosts Nabra Nelson and Marina Johnson. Kunafa and Shay discusses and analyzes contemporary and historical Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) and Southwest Asian and North African (SWANA) theatre from across the region. Kunafa and Shay highlights MENA/SWANA plays and theatremakers, spotlights community-engaged work in the region and diaspora, and analyzes the past, present, and future of MENA/SWANA theatre in the United States and beyond. Theatre artists and scholars Nabra Nelson and Marina Johnson bring their own perspectives, research, and special guests in order to start a dialogue and encourage further learning and discussion. The name, Kunafa and Shay, invites you into the discussion in the best way we know how: with complex and delicious sweets like kunafa, and perfectly warm tea (or, in Arabic, shay). Kunafa and Shay is a place to share experiences, discuss ideas, and sometimes engage with our differences. In each country in the region, you'll find kunafa made differently. In that way, we also lean into the diversity, complexity, and robust flavors of MENA/SWANA theatre.

Kalid and Joe break from (fictional) monsters for a conversation with writer and editor, Basma Ghalayani, about how genre fiction and speculative fiction can be seen as a tool to reflect on the traumas of the past and present as well as explore the hopes for the future. Specifically, we discuss the short-story collection, Palestine + 100: Stories from a Century after the Nakba, which Ghalayani edited. *Thank you to Jim Hall for the music! On the positive side, social media has provided a platform for Muslim women to share their stories, challenge stereotypes, and inspire others. It has given them a voice and the opportunity to connect with a global community. However, there are also downsides. Sometimes, Muslim women face backlash, stereotypes, and even harassment online. It's important to navigate these dynamics by promoting positive dialogue, educating others, and supporting each other. As for studying Islam and sharing it on social media, it's a great way to learn and engage with others.

The hosts are back in their normal seats and with a special guest, Dr. Basma Al-Buhairan, Managing Director for the Center for the Fourth Industrial Revolution (C4IR), who joins The 966 to talk about tech adoption and the Center's role in enabling Vision 2030's success. Before the conversation, the hosts discuss some key projects for Vision 2030 being delayed, as reported in Bloomberg, and why that is a good thing. Richard reads from a recent Bloomberg item highlighting the delays based on comments from Mohammed Al-Jaddan, Minister of Finance. "The government, which is forecasting budget deficits every year out to 2026, has decided on the extension to build capacity and avert huge inflationary pressures and supply bottlenecks, Finance Minister Mohammed Al Jadaan said Thursday. He didn't specify which projects would be affected..." Then the hosts discuss Lucien's One Big Thing, the new US Embassy building in Saudi Arabia's capital, Riyadh. The United States has officially broken ground on its new embassy project in Saudi Arabia's capital Riyadh, a sprawling new building blending traditional and modern architecture on a 27.5 acre site. When completed, it will be the largest embassy in Riyadh. U.S. and Saudi officials participated in a ceremony to break ground on the new compound this week, marking a milestone in the longstanding U.S.-Saudi bilateral relationship. Deputy Assistant Secretary for Arabian Peninsula Affairs Daniel Benaim and Saudi Deputy Foreign Minister, His Excellency Mr. Waleed bin Abdulkarim Al-Khuraiji, joined U.S. Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Michael Ratney for the event. Next, Lucien and Richard welcome onto The 966 Dr. Basma Al-Buhairan, Managing Director for the Center for the Fourth Industrial Revolution (C4IR). Dr. Basma discusses her work leading Saudi Arabia's efforts at developing what is called "Industry 4.0" or "the Fourth Industrial Revolution" or "4IR" which is the next phase in the digitization of the manufacturing sector, driven by disruptive trends including the rise of data and connectivity, analytics, human-machine interaction, and improvements in robotics. The center supports Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 by being a platform for public-private, multi-stakeholder collaboration to maximize technological benefits to society and minimize the risks associated with 4IR technologies in The Kingdom. Dr. Basma is also an adviser and part of the founding team of the Research Development Innovation Authority (RDIA)Lucien and Richard conclude as always with a jam-packed "Yallah!" segment, covering 6 top storylines from Saudi Arabia from the last few weeks, including Expo2030 in Riyadh, a new type of Saudi-made sustainable firewood, and much more...

We are releasing a conversation recorded on Tuesday, November 14th, 2023, at IDFA, where I met with Julian Ross and Farah Hasanbegović to recap Corresponding Cinemas. Corresponding Cinemas was a new series at IDFA this year, and in many ways, it was an experiment to see what invisible connections surface when an institution decides to transfer over its curatorial control to filmmakers. The idea is simple and compelling. It would be a series of films and conversations with filmmakers who have inspired one another, and the day would follow this chain of inspiration, with each filmmaker selecting the works of the next. The series was planned months in advance and formally announced in September; in the very first announcement the festival made about its program - it reported that the event would kick off with Sky Hopinka and include Basma al-Sharif, Jumana Manna, Ibrahim Shaddad and Abderrahmane Sissako. In this episode, Farah, Julian, and I run through the events leading up to Corresponding Cinemas as we experienced them on the ground. We first discuss the opening night and the release of IDFA's statement apologizing for a protest banner that appeared during the ceremony and condemning a slogan that was on the banner proclaiming it should not be used in any way and by anybody anymore - despite a recent ruling by the Dutch Court of Appeals that this is not considered hate speech. In response to IDFA denouncing this slogan, Jumana Manna, Basma al-Sharif, and Sky Hopinka circulated a joint statement refusing to comply with IDFA's statement the evening before their participation in Corresponding Cinemas. The series took place, and Farah, Julian, and I recount how the day unfolded, detailing how each filmmaker used their screenings in different ways to transform a cinema space into a forum for urgent, meaningful, and needed exchanges. TIMECODES:0:00  INTRO & GUEST INTROS 4:23: OPENING NIGHT + IDFA STATEMENT12:30 CORRESPONDING CINEMAS - FILMMAKERS REFUSAL TO COMPLY  14:30  SKY HOPINKA SESSION17:40 BASMA AL-SHARIF SESSION25:14  JUMANA MANNA SESSION39:10 IBRAHIM SHADDAD SCREENING SESSION 43:12 SOLIDARITY ACTIONS FOLLOWING CORRESPONDING CINEMAS STATEMENTS REFERENCED:Opening Night: Workers for Palestine Intervention IDFA Statement #1: IDFA and Artistic Director's Statement about the Opening Night IDFA Statement #2: IDFA Calls for an Immediate Ceasefire I/We Do Not Comply - Artists' Refusal IDFA Statement #3: A Message from IDFA to the Documentary Community RELATED PODCAST EPISODESOrwa Nyrabia on Corresponding Cinemas, Docs in Orbit, Episode 71 Jumana Manna on Docs in Orbit, Episode 44Basma al-Sharif on Docs on Orbit,  Episode 27 For show notes, visit docsinorbit.com and be sure to follow us on social media @docsinorbit
