Recorded on location in the wilds of Western Florida (aka our parents' house) we start out this episode with a quick breakdown of Christmas, including successful hospital trips (spoilers: we were NOT stealing babies) and geeky presents, but it all goes by really fast because we've gotta talk about "Skibidi Toilet." Seriously you guys, this series is messed up. It's the weirdest thing we've seen all year, intentionally disturbing nightmare fuel, super upsetting and definitely not the kind of thing we'd like. Which is why we've watched all 69 episodes. They didn't really kill that guy did they? What's up with the lens? Is the Alliance okay? Where are the Titans? Where's the TV Headed Woman? So many questions arrgh when's the next episode??!! This week's outro is a clip from Bollywood Dream by Lisa Hammer. (It's not possible to get something quite as weird as the Skibidi Toilet song so we just went with this one.) Here's a link to Skibidi Toilet but fair warning, it's some serious nightmare fuel right from the beginning, so if you don't want that living in your brain you can just listen to our recap of it. My guest on the show today is Jorge Gonzalez, the CEO of The St. Joe Company. St. Joe is a 2.53 billion dollar market cap company whose main asset is a huge landholding in Northwest Florida. A lot of investors may remember that the company has been the subject of a number of short reports over the last decade but since Jorge became CEO in 2015, St Joe has consistently grown its revenue and EBITDA—and has diversified its revenue base. Also, after a period of time in which the stock was unable to break out, over the last year it has risen to levels that had not been seen since the mid-2000s. Given the company's recent success, I was excited to talk to Jorge about his vision of the future of the company and what people may not be appreciating its asset base. Specifically, we discussed: - What it means to operate as an owner-oriented company; - The demographic trends that are fueling growth in Northwest Florida; - What the shorts have gotten wrong over the years; - How the company approaches the risk of hurricanes in the region; and - What Jorge has learned from the company's Chairman, Bruce Berkowitz of Fairholme Capital This episode of Compounders: The Anatomy of a Multibagger is sponsored by Tegus, an innovative and disruptive company that is changing the way professional investors work. Episode 72 Kyle ByrtusKyle Byrtus, was a gifted athlete with a promising future. But like too many people, he lost his way and got mixed up in drug and battled addiction. His addiction derailed his plans, and caused a hurdle in his relationships with his family. His Mom, Lynne, feared that one day she would get a call that her son was dead, and that he had overdosed. Sadly, in August 2013, Lynne got the call she worried about- her 25 year-old son Kyle was dead. But he hadn't overdosed, he was the victim of a homicide. Kyle was shot and discarded in a south Western Florida field. There was little in the way of evidence or clues in his case due to heavy rain, and decomposition. Despite Kyle's case being cold, 7 years later, his Mom Lynne is still searching for answers. If you have information about Kyle's case, please call the Lee County Sheriff's Office at 239-477-1000. The Spanish found an interpreter, the young man, Juan Ortiz, who spent 8 years of his life in the Indian village of chief Ucita and then ran off to live in the village of Mocoso for another 3 years. The Spanish begin their travels north. I wonder if this expedition through Florida would have been much easier if the previous trip by Panifilo de Narvaez and his group would have established a greater friendship with the Indians. Things you wish you would have known ahead of time but, the Spanish push forward.

Long before Marvel Comics created Spiderman, a spiderman was created by the Ashanti tribe of western Africa. The frequent trickster (and sometimes victim of other animals' tricks) has appeared in many aliases, and in many other parts of the world, including the Caribbean, Central America and the U.S. Sometimes he appears as a spider, sometimes a man, and sometimes both. In the Southern U.S., “he” sometimes turned into Aunt Nancy. In our story for this month, he retains his original name and gender, even though he has been transplanted to Jamaica, mon. And alas, it's another one of those cases (like “Anansi Goes Fishing”, which we're currently performing on tour) where he ends up on the short end of the storytellers' stick. We thought an Anansi story would be particularly appropriate for Black History Month, otherwise known as February. (In Great Britain, it's celebrated in October.) The month, which was originally just a week, traces its roots back to 1926, when prominent historian Dr. Carter Woodson began crusading to remedy the way his fellow African-Americans had been neglected in the history books. February is also the anniversary of the Fifteenth Amendment granting African-Americans the right to vote, and the swearing in of Hiram Revels as the first African-American member of the U.S. Senate. And February contains the birthday of the early civil rights leader W.E.B. DuBois, who along with Dr. Woodson, helped found the NAACP in 1909—during, would you believe it, the month of February. And you thought this month was just for presidents, groundhogs and chocolate. We come to you from Western Florida, a state in which we've been sojourning for the past couple of months. But we're on our way north and gradually back to the West Coast, to the region where we started. We hope you do your share of reading during Read Across America Week, the first week in March.
