Star Tribune beat writer Jerry Zgoda and Minnesota United midfielder Wil Trapp join the show for a season preview as the Loons prepare for their opener Friday at Seattle. Expectations are high, both externally and internally, after MN United narrowly missed making the MLS Cup final last season. Will the addition of several veterans and the continued ascendance of Emanuel Reynoso propel the Loons to even greater heights, or will they struggle to live up to their own success? At the outset, Rand examines the suddenly ice-cold Twins, who have lost five straight games -- all at Target Field -- in frustrating fashion. At 5-7 on the season, the Twins seem like they are better than their record indicates. But it's also possible that their greatest strengths -- all-around depth and lack of a glaring weakness -- could also be a detriment in close games. Plus a Wild win, a look ahead and a look ahead to the WNBA Draft on Thursday night.

Welcome back, soccer fans! Thanks for joining the conversation on all things American soccer with the Sons of a Pitch podcast. In this week's episode, the hosts give their reactions to the USMNT hiring Gregg Berhalter as the new coach. While both are in favor of the hiring, it remains to be seen if Berhalter's system with the Columbus Crew can be implemented at the national team level. Having players like Gyasi Zardes, Wil Trapp, and Zack Steffen could certainly help. Nick's biggest takeaway is Berhalter's ability get the most out of his team, while Mike looks to Berhalter's unique blend of playing for the USMNT, MLS, and European leagues to help him build the team's identity. In Major League Soccer action, the MLS Cup Final is set between the Portland Timbers and Atlanta United. Portland, tested road warriors, travel to Atlanta and Merdedess-Benz stadium to take on the high powered attack of the Five Stripes. While the home team is favored, look to the visitors to play spoiler and ruin Atlanta's best chance at a trophy. Expect another big game from the stars: Valeri, Blanco, Martinez, and Almiron. And how great has Attinella's post-season play been for the Timbers? He'll be called on more than once in this matchup. The hosts conclude their podcast looking at the Concacaf Champions League (CCL) draw featuring 5 MLS teams. In a balanced bracket (2/3 MLS and 2 Liga MX teams on each side) don't be surprised if this is the first year for an MLS team to win the tournament or if four Mexican teams make up the semi-finals. Oddly, they lose to Ireland 2-1 and draw France 1-1 The hosts break down the goals and the line-ups, and discuss the future of the USMNT players and coaches. Wil Trapp captained the team amid speculation of a move from Columbus to Europe. Bill Hamid and Zack Steffen started in goal, and the hosts discuss how Steffen and Alex Bono are the keepers of the future. Also, the United Bid of Canada, USA, and Mexico won the right to host World Cup 2026. The news came the morning after our recording, and we at Sons of a Pitch are very excited to watch the greatest players in the world in our backyard (albeit in 8yrs or so). What are your thoughts on the USMNT roster and coaching candidates? Are you done seeing Jozy Altidore and Bobby Wood, like Nick? Do you want a European style coach, like Mike? Well that was another poor performance from D.C. United, but the guys from Filibuster are here to talk you through it. We talk about the game against New York City FC and start with some praise for Ian Harkes before diving into everything that went wrong. We talk about the midfield, the goals, and Steve Birnbaum and Sean Franklin. We also have to talk about the defensive midfield position, and the attack for good measure. We then bring on Kris Landis of Massive Report to give us the update on Columbus Crew SC. We talk about what has been missing from Gregg Berhalter's cookbook so far this season and the issues with Wil Trapp that reflect the issues with their gameplan. We talk about Zack Steffen and whether Federico Higuain's frustrations are a problem, Harrison Afful get subbed out at halftime, and his opposite number at fullback. Finally, we talk about their central midfield, the utility of Adam Jahn, and how to gameplan the Crew. Give it a listen!

Filibuster is a little late but always here for you. Adam, Jason, and Ben talk about D.C. United's 4-0 win over the Chicago Fire, and ask whether or not this was United's best performance of the year. We talk about Chris Pontius' goal, Shooter Kemp, and D.C. United's current form as well. We then talk about the playoff races overall: in the Eastern Conference it is pretty much all over, but there are some interesting permutations out in the Western Conference. We also hope Seattle invents tumbling out of the playoffs, because that would be fun. Finally, we talk about D.C. United's last regular season game against Columbus Crew SC. We talk about Perry Kitchen versus Wil Trapp, and talk about what D.C. United will need to do to go into the playoffs on a three game winning streak. Give it a listen!
