It's a holiday gift-wrapped conversation with American soccer pioneer and US National Soccer Hall of Famer Johnny Moore - whose professional career as a player and coach across the original versions of both the North American Soccer League (San Jose Earthquakes, Oakland Stompers), and Major Indoor Soccer League (Detroit Lightning, San Francisco Fog, Phoenix Inferno & a one-game/one-goal stint with the Kansas City Comets), and as General Manager of the original Major League Soccer incarnation of the 'Quakes (formerly Clash, now Houston Dynamo) - is the stuff of legend. Also: the "outlaw" 1969 Oakland/California Clippers; San Francisco's infamous Cow Palace; the mid-70s US Men's National Team; the real origin story of the NASL 35-yard line (and Shootout); and how Mexico's Club America almost became another Chivas USA. + + + SUPPORT THE SHOW: Buy Us a Coffee: https://ko-fi.com/goodseatsstillavailable "Good Seats" Merch: https://www.teepublic.com/?ref_id=35106 SPONSOR THANKS (AND SUPPORT THE SHOW!): Royal Retros (10% off promo code: SEATS): https://www.503-sports.com?aff=2 Old School Shirts.com (10% off promo code: GOODSEATS) https://oldschoolshirts.com/goodseats Yinzylvania (20% off promo code: GOODSEATSSTILLAVAILABLE): https://yinzylvania.com/GOODSEATSSTILLAVAILABLE BUY THE BOOK (AND SUPPORT THE SHOW!): "Soccer Fever: A Year With the San Jose Earthquakes" (1977): https://amzn.to/3BTrNy1 FIND AND FOLLOW: Website: https://goodseatsstillavailable.com/ Blue Sky: https://bsky.app/profile/goodseatsstillavailable.com Threads: https://www.threads.net/@goodseatsstillavailable X/Twitter: https://twitter.com/GoodSeatsStill Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/goodseatsstillavailable/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GoodSeatsStillAvailable/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@goodseatsstillavailable

This spring I'm releasing bonus episodes of The Take Home. No new lectures on leadership, instead I'm sharing the amazing podcasts created by the students in my Leadership for Sport Professionals class. Today's bonus episode features "Until Next Time" produced and created by Dabney Moore, Alan McGuire, and Peyton Wagner. In the podcast, they interview Michael Lahoud who is an Analyst for CBS Sports Golazo Network, a color analyst for Austin FC, and on-air talent for ESPN soccer. And in a previous life, he was an assistant soccer coach for Trinity University, which is where our paths crossed, and he first meet Alan. During the interview they discuss the Behavioral Approach to leadership and the Path-Goal Theory. Michael was a standout student-athlete at Wake Forest and the stories he shares about lessons learned, starting in the recruiting process, are outstanding. "Do you want to make history?" What an amazing question and by answering yes, Michael did indeed make history by winning a National Championship at Wake and influencing so many other indivudals in the years afterwards. With a lengthy professional soccer career at Chivas USA, Miami FC, SAFC, FC Cincinnati, among others, Michael also played in FIFA World Cup Qualifiers and AFCON Qualifiers and numerous other matches with the Sierra Leone National Team. I love how Michael talks about the need to take risks, to say YES, and to keep showing up. Great leaders know that, "closed mouths don't get feed" and Michael certainly personifies that mantra. This is a fast-paced, delightful conversation. Enjoy! The music for the episode, The Gentleman, was created by DivKid.

American followers of the "beautiful game" undoubtedly know the name Thomas Rongen - but can easily be forgiven for not remembering just exactly how. Of course, there's his current color commentary work for today's Major League Soccer Inter Miami CF - but fans of a certain age will recall the Dutch-born, mop-topped midfielder from his on-field (and in-arena) antics during the halcyon days of the old North American Soccer League alongside international greats like Johan Cruyff, George Best and Alan Willey on clubs like the Los Angeles Aztecs, Washington Diplomats, and two flavors of Strikers - Fort Lauderdale and Minnesota. Younger aficionados might place their earliest recollections of a fiery presence on the sidelines coaching a wide array of pro clubs ranging from successor ASL/APSL versions of the Strikers in the late 80s/early 90s, to early MLS sides like the 1996 Tampa Bay Mutiny, 1997-98 New England Revolution, 1999-2001 DC United, or even 2005's version of Chivas USA - not to mention his two stints helming the US Men's U-20 National team before and after. However, most will undoubtedly know Rongen from his memorable turn as the head coach of the American Samoa national team during FIFA World Cup qualifying in 2011 - forever immortalized in the epically joyous 2014 documentary "Next Goal Wins", and soon to be refashioned as a major motion picture drama of the same name this fall - in which he wills one of the world's perennial soccer minnows into surprising respectability. We cover all of it - and more - with one of the country's most endearing soccer personalities! Episode 12 is one that we enjoyed very much, largely thanks to our special guest, Stephen Brandt who brings knowledge and passion to the Forgotten Football Club Podcast from the USA. It starts off with us talking about the former MLS club Chivas USA, a club franchise, within a club franchise, within a club franchise (yes, you read that right). They existed for 10 years and are the last club to drop out of the MLS at the time of recording. We go even further and talk about the pros and cons of the MLS, while Stephen gives us his perception of how the league is doing. He also shares with us how he feels the World Cup 2026 will go as it's co-hosted in the United States, while he shares his views on some of the European clubs he follows and some of the clubs he doesn't like (Rory was impressed). So, sit back and enjoy one of the most colorful episodes we have had to date on the Forgotten Football Clubs Podcast, as we go Stateside!
Our sincerest apologies for Troy being sick last week, but we were able to squeak this recording together under the wire for our battle against Chivas USA. Plenty of questions, ample amounts of whining about MLS Fantasy and far too much discussion about both Schmetzer's job and Jonathon's living room.
Hello Colorado Rapids fans! Happy Opening Day! Red had a bunch of interviews he was sitting on throughout preseason, so here's a bunch of them to get you hyped for the season opener. The Athletic Major League Soccer staff writer Pablo Maurer steps into our vortex of what-used-to-be in professional sports this week, with a look back at some of the more confounding and overlooked stories of the not-so-distant past of US pro soccer. It's our deepest dives yet into memorable North American Soccer League gems like 1977's one-year wonder Team Hawaii; 1983's divisive US Men's National Team-as-pro-franchise Team America; the curious Stateside detours of world greats like Bayern Munich superstar Gerd Müeller, Dutch legend Johan Cruyff and Manchester United icon George Best - plus, of course, the NASL's inventive ahead-of-its-time 35-yard-line Shootout tie-breaker. We also tackle some of the already forgotten early days of Major League Soccer - including its own version of the Shootout; LA's ill-fated "first" second franchise Chivas USA; and impossible-to-forget franchise monikers like Wiz, Burn, Clash, and MetroStars. PLUS: the unheralded pre-MLS rules experiments of the mid-90s USISL minor league pyramid. AND: the incomparable (if not incomprehensible) Socker Slam!

Happy Thanksgiving from the Hot Cast! Ruben and RJ are back sooner than expected to talk about the recent coaching news for both top flight teams in the city. They discuss Ezra Hendrickson's background and examine his resume, talk about how he'll affect the transfer moves during the offseason, and what kind of football to expect out of the club next season. Score another point for Ruben's theory that mid-2000's Chivas USA is secretly the most important MLS club in league history. Then they discuss the accusations from the Washington Post against former Red Stars head coach Rory Dames. They address the allegations and discuss how we all need to do better to identify and prevent this from happening in the future. Note: This was recorded Monday 11/22 and some of the things discussed in the podcast may not reflect on moments that came after.
In this special edition episode, Greg, Sean and Kris are able to interview New England Revolution midfielder, Tommy McNamara. The Work in Sports Podcast - Insider Advice for Sports Careers
Hey everybody, I'm Brian Clapp, VP of Content and Engaged Learning at WorkInSports.com and this is the Work In Sports podcast… What would you do if someone asked you to build a new pro sports brand from the ground up, AND build a new stadium in LA? Your budget is 350 million -- go! Me? I'd probably roll up in the fetal position and cry myself to sleep. This is a massive undertaking. Wrong steps have enormous ramifications. And I am known for my wrong steps, it's part of my charm. You can't do over a brand, it is a living breathing thing that gets established then takes on a life of its own through the local community and sports ecosystem. You can't wing it on a stadium build, there are layers and layers of decisions that will have an impact felt for decades. Benny Tran, EVP of Corporate Strategy and Operations for LAFC is the mind behind these monumentally important aspects I've outlined for you. When you hear Benny explain it, as you are about to, it seems like a calm walk in the park. He is so even-keeled -- methodical, pragmatic -- but also gives off this vibe like he has his arms around everything just fine. Me I feel like I'm constantly sticking my fingers in holes, Benny just has a different air about him. Can you tell I admire this guy? Maybe it's because in his life prior to sports, he worked on global initiatives like HIV/AIDS treatment in Southeast Asia, national health strategies and climate action. When you have your hands in issues of this magnitude, what's getting a stadium built? There is a lot in this conversation -- from business intelligence, facility management, brand identity, community involvement, the importance oof daily workers and more. Here's Benny Tran, buckle up. Watch Benny Tran on the Work In Sports Podcast https://youtu.be/JyYpreggcd4 Questions for Benny Tran, EVP Corporate Strategy and Operations LAFC 1: Undergrad at Emory majoring in Middle Eastern Studies and Arabic, MPA in public policy from Princeton, over a decade with the Clinton Foundation working on climate initiatives and Clinton Health Access Initiative – anything was in reach for you at any moment, so why sports? Why was being a part of the LAFC story the right move for you? 2: October 30th 2014, MLS awards a new expansion club to Los Angeles after Chivas USA dissolved. You were hired a month later in December 2014 to be the SVP of Corporate Strategy and Development – early on, with so much to do, does it feel like trying to boil the ocean? How do you even start to prioritize and focus? 3: Much of your background, prior to sports, was in international development. As you set forth to build a cutting-edge stadium in Los Angeles that would not only represent the city and the LAFC brand, but also employ thousands of people and open up the community – which proved harder your work in building public health infrastructure to treat people living with HIV/AIDS in SE Asia or getting a stadium built in LA? 4: I was reading through the stats of Banc of California stadium and I found myself saying “that's cool” or “what a cool idea!” a lot. Every seat is within 135 ft of the pitch, it is an LEED silver certified stadium, over 1,800 full-time jobs created… As you consider all you and the LAFC team accomplished with this new organization and stadium in LA – what are you proudest of? 5: As you've watched this team develop from the beginning to what it is now, how much of an impact has it had on the local community? And is that something that doesn't get talked about enough in sports, the positive local impact? 6: Peter Guber owner and executive chairman of LAFC told the LA Times a few years back “When you build an organization, you build a culture, culture is your business plan.” What does that mean to you, “culture is your business plan?” 7: The pandemic has affected sports in a myriad of ways, but one issue we don't talk about enough are the...

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THIS WEEK’S SHOW. This week we’re joined by Ken Hoetker, Brad Weigel, former FC Cincinnati midfielder Michael Lahoud as we look ahead to the 2021 MLS SuperDraft. We started off the show by discussing the rumor that broke right before we went live that the New York Red Bulls are shopping center back Tim Parker (reported by Ives Galarcep of sbisoccer.com) and according to Will Forbes on Twitter (he nailed the Matarrita deal), Parker’s headed to Cincinnati. This has yet to be confirmed and is still just a rumor. Stay tuned to CST for further updates. Joining us as a special guest this week is Travis Clark, the Director of Content over at TopDrawerSoccer.com. Anytime you need information about the collegiate game and the top prospects coming into MLS, you should check out the fine work that Travis does over there. Really glad he joined us this week on the show. We had a spirited discussion about which way FC Cincinnati should go in the draft. Draft the attacking goal scorer in Calvin Harris? Draft a center back to solidify your defense in Ethan Bartlow. What do you think? We also announced today at CST that former FC Cincinnati and Arsenal defender Justin Hoyte will be joining CST as an analyst for the 2021 MLS season! We’re excited to have him and can’t wait to get started. We wrapped up this week’s show with a listener question from Jim Gegner, he asked Michael what were his emotions leading up to the 2009 MLS SuperDraft when Michael was selected 9th overall by Chivas USA. Michael shared his experience both leading up to the draft and beyond. SUPPORT CST! Want to help support Cincinnati Soccer Talk? Want to become an episode captain? Become a supporter today! After the triumph in the US Open Cup Final against the Union, things have gone a bit sour for the Seattle Sounders with two straight league losses against the New York Red Bulls and FC Dallas. Jeremiah, Aaron and Zach return to look back at the past week's results, try to figure out what's going on and generally be grumpy. Zach also shares his observations from the Dallas match, which he was in attendance for, spending a lot of time complaining about a lack of width. We're also joined by Alicia Rodriguez from The Goat Parade to preview this weekend's match against Chivas USA. There's also listener questions to be answered as well.
Nos Audietis returns with episode 153 of our fabulous program. Since we last spoke with you the Seattle Sounders have won two games, defeating the Colorado Rapids and Chivas USA to wrestle back a slight advantage in the Supporters Shield race. We discuss both matches and look ahead at how the stretch run of the season could play out. In the MLS Wrap we talk about expansion news as several cities are making noise about wanting an MLS team, while another city that had a team gifted to them appears unable to take advantage. We also touch on the USMNT friendly, Jordan Morris and Carlos Bocanegra's impending retirements. There's also listener questions and some disappointed talk about the Seattle Reign.
