Augusta Road in West Columbia, SC, isn't a storybook setting. Strip malls are lined up down the road, flanking a Wal-Mart and a sprawling old school U Haul campus. But just keep going and turn off the road at the Aldi and there's a  summer camp style building tucked in some trees and a modest BBQ sign. That's when you know you've reached the city limits, City Limits BBQ to be exact. Owner and pitmaster Robbie Robinson grew up in nearby Red Bank, SC eating his fill of SC Midlands BBQ. While living in Houston in the early 2000s, he acquired his first Texas-style offset wood smoker and began his journey to unlock the subtle mysteries of smoking meats. He's been serving the people of West Columbia for eight years, including the last year in this building on the edge of town, a town that he is representing this year as a James Beard Foundation finalist for Best Chef: Southeast. Every time we visit, we end up at the smokers, where we get down to the business of conversation. And I invariably mispronounce chicharrons, which you'll hear here. I'm working on it, I promise.

Another disappointing week to start the season as we have secured only 1 point out of a possible 15. Join Jay and Than as they discuss the Houston game and our complete lack of scoring. Hearing loss caused Ferrigno to be bullied by peers during his childhood: “They used to call me ‘deaf Louie, deaf-mute’, because of my hearing and because of the way I sounded.” Ferrigno started weight training at age 13, citing body builder and Hercules star Steve Reeves as one of his role models. Because he could not afford to buy weights, he made his own using a broomstick and pails which he partially filled with cement.  He was also a fan of the Hercules films that starred Reeves. Ferrigno’s other personal heroes as a child were Spider-Man and the Hulk. Ferrigno attended St. Athanasius Grammar School and Brooklyn Technical High School, where he learned metalworking. After graduating from high school in 1969, Ferrigno won his first major title, IFBB Mr. America. Four years later, he won the title IFBB Mr. Universe. Early in his career he lived in Columbus, Ohio and trained with Arnold Schwarzenegger. In 1974, he came in second on his first attempt at the Mr. Olympia competition. He came in third the following year, and his attempt to beat Arnold Schwarzenegger was the subject of the 1977 documentary Pumping Iron. The documentary made Ferrigno famous. These victories, however, did not provide enough income for him to earn a living. His first paying job was as a $10-an-hour sheet metal worker in a Brooklyn factory, where he worked for three years. He did not enjoy the dangerous work and left after a friend and co-worker accidentally cut off his own hand one day. Following this, Ferrigno left the competition circuit for many years, a period that included a brief stint as a defensive lineman for the Toronto Argonauts in the Canadian Football League. He had never played football and was cut after two games. Ferrigno left the world of Canadian football after he broke the legs of a fellow player during a scrimmage. During the competition, Ferrigno at 6 ft 5 in (1.96 m) weighed 268 lb (130 kg) in 1975, and 315 lb (142 kg) in 1992. Ferrigno competed in the first annual World’s Strongest Man competition in 1977, where he finished fourth in a field of eight competitors. In the early 1990s, Ferrigno returned to bodybuilding, competing for the 1992 and 1993 Mr. Olympia titles. Finishing 12th and 10th, respectively, he then turned to the 1994 Masters Olympia, where his attempt to beat Robbie Robinson and Boyer Coe was the subject of the 1996 documentary Stand Tall. After this, he retired from competition.

With no fans in the stands, Inter Miami was able to light up the night with a win in their first ever, home-game played at Inter Miami CF Stadium. With most players having their best game in uniform, Julián Carranza and Rodolfo Pizarro stood out and combined for three Inter Miami goals - Another first for the team! With Blaise Matuidi still working through visa documentation, another DP slot to fill and Robbie Robinson rejoining the club... Inter Miami is going to be a tough out for any MLS team. Inter Miami traveled up north to face DC United in their 2nd match of the season. Not even 2 minutes in, Rodolpho Pizzaro made history with our clubs 1st ever goal! On a beautiful assist from Robbie Robinson, Pizarro was able to put the ball behind the goalie to go up, 1-0. All things were going great… Until the 2nd half were things started to spire out of control. Lewis Morgan put the ball behind the DC United’s goalie thanks to a ricochet off a DC defender to score our 2nd ever goal. However… The call was quickly reversed due to a controversial DOGSO penalty against Roman Torres. Not only did we loose a point, we also lost Torres and had to play man-down for the remainder of the match. A few minutes later… more bad news, Ulloa was called for a high kick in the box, which results in Yamil Asad converting on a PK. BUT WAIT! There’s more…. Just a few minutes after that, Wil Trapp gets called on a slide tackle leading to an Edison Flores free kick. The kick did not go in! However… With the ball bouncing off the side-post, Brillant was able to connect on the rebound resulting in a score of, 2-1. Four-star cornerback Robbie Robinson committed to Arizona State in the summer of 2015 despite living on the other side of the country. By the time he arrived on campus, the coaches who recruited him were gone, and the life he envisioned for himself on and on the football field began to feel out of reach. Robinson left the team in 2017, and began a journey into a depression that nearly led to his suicide. In the months after, he says he experienced an "awakening" that led to a desire to use his near-suicide attempt as part of his story of flourishing moving forward. Instead, he referenced the event in the midst of a series of tweets that led to his arrest, and Robinson facing a terrorism charge with a mandatory minimum of 10 years in prison. The following podcast includes context of Robinson's journey, as well as interviews from the days before his arrest, as well as the past week, as he serves out the probationary period for his felony conviction on a lesser charge.

We all have a low point and we don't allow ourselves to honestly reflect on what it means, what should I be learning from this, what am I meant to do next. Don't live in your low point, learn from it. We also emphasize how Gratitude really is the key to us living a life of purpose. It is something that is always available to you no matter how bad any situation may be. It is also a PRACTICE. Bryan just got back from a trip to Venice Beach California where he ran into two bodybuilding legends. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Robbie Robinson. Obviously both Arnold and Robbie were blessed with some great genetics. And both of them made the most out the gifts they were given while having an absolute blast in the process. But looking at the two of them today, Arnold (69) and Robbie (70), you can see that lifestyle is an even bigger factor than genetics when it comes to building a ripped and muscular body. Bitten by the pirate radio bug in his youth, his first station was Radio Vanessa in the early 1970s.Arrested and charged with being a pirate in 1972, he worked for BigD and ARD as the stations came back on air, before moving to Sunshine and then to Radio Nova where he formed a great breakfast show partnership with Bob Gallico.Since then he's worked for Capital Radio in London, Century Radio, FM104 Radio Ireland and Today FM, and presents a morning talk show on East Coast FM every day between 10am and 12. We chat about those early pirate days, the raids, the coups, the characters, Chris Cary, Robbie Robinson, going to LA to study KISS FM (what a chore!), discover a share broadcasting history from the same Dublin, and loads more.
