We're back with another AFTN Soccer Show packed full of Vancouver Whitecaps, Major League Soccer, and general soccer chat, in what's been another eventful week in the world of Canadian football. It's D & D time in North American soccer, but instead of rolling the dice for some fantasy fun, it's clubs doing so in terms of a multitude of Drafts and Draws. Last week saw an insufferable draw for the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, that doesn't bode well for what the one for the 2026 World Cup will look like, and there's a plethora of draws and drafts coming up over the next fortnight. Seattle will be hosting six matches in the Club World Cup. Will there even be one or will the players revolt? And what lessons, good and bad, might we glean for 2026 from the tournament's format and kick off times? MLS Commissioner Don Garber gave his annual State of the League address last week. We pick over the bones of the main takeaways and talking points around the future schedule, how MLS will approach the various cup competitions next year, Apple TV metrics, and more. Our feature interview this episode is with the Whitecaps Canadian Championship hero, goalkeeper Isaac Boehmer. It's been quite the 2024 for Isaac and we recap it here, as he battles for the number one jersey with the 'Caps next year. Could he also earn his first Canadian call-up in Jesse Marsch's Camp Poutine? And how is Muffin getting on? We get all the important answers! All of this plus Ryan Gauld muses about Scotland's Nations League campaign and looks ahead to this Friday's UEFA World Cup qualifying draw, Forge FC head coach Bobby Smyrniotis talks to us about the upcoming CONCACAF Champions Cup draw and next year's Canadian Championship, and music-wise we kick off our 2024 Festive 15 with the songs that came in at the numbers 10 to 12 positions. Here's the rundown for the main segments from the episode: 01.24: Intro - advent calendars, a day with Dick, Spotify wrapped 15.21: Seattle host six matches after insufferable Club World Cup draw 39.40: Whitecaps, Cavalry, and Forge will soon learn Champions Cup fate 43.23: Bobby Smyrniotis on Champions Cup and Canadian Championship 52.37: AFTN's 2024 Festive 15 - #12 Lambrini Girls - Company Culture 57.05: Garber's MLS State of the League - the main talking points 93.07: LA Galaxy win 6th MLS Cup 105.06: AFTN's 2024 Festive 15 - #11 Sputn1k - Boys Never Cry 108.15: Isaac Boehmer interview 132.36: AFTN's 2024 Festive 15 - #10 Mogwai - Lion Rumpus 137.25: Ryan Gauld talks Scotland, Nations League, and World Cup qualification 145.25: Wavelength - Halftime Oranges - Yesterday's Hero

We're back with another packed show of Canadian soccer chat. As the feast of footballing action continues across the country, we'll be talking MLS, CPL, and the Canadian Championship in this episode. Vancouver Whitecaps extended their unbeaten MLS run to eight games at the weekend with a crucial win over Minnesota United. We look back at the main talking points coming out of the match, talk attendances again, round-up the weekend's action in the MLS West, and Sporting Director Axel Schuster addresses the Diego Lainez transfer rumours with Har. Turning our attention to the CPL, we look at the historic match in Langley on Sunday as Vancouver FC played their first home game in their new stadium. We delve into the controversial game against Cavalry and give a first hand account of what the initial stadium and supporter experience was like. We also chat with VFC co-owner Rob Friend about the long journey to get this team off the ground, the difficulty in attracting more local players to the side, continuing to build upon a strong start off the pitch, the sustainability of the league, and more. It's also a week of Canadian Championship action. We preview the only two quarter-finals that matter and look ahead to the big one, the BC derby between Pacific FC and TSS Rovers. We hear the thoughts of Pacific head coach James Merriman and we chat with TSS head honcho Will Cromack. Is another cupset on the cards? Plus while we're loving cup football and the lower leagues, we chat about MLS Commissioner Don Garber seemingly dissing those things south of the border. Here's the rundown for the main segments from the episode: 01.29: Intro 06.50: Whitecaps extend unbeaten run to eight with win over Minnesota 25.35: MLS round-up 35.25: Whitecaps crowd woes 38.00: Axel Schuster addresses the Diego Lainez rumours 44.25: Vancouver FC's first home supporter and stadium experience 70.33: Vancouver v Cavalry game analysis 84.37: Rob Friend interview and discussion 111.10: Canadian Championship chat 124.15: Will Cromack interview 131.52: Don Garber disses lower leagues 138.25: Wavelength - Funky Red Pandas - KarlHeinz Rummenigge

In this episode of the Designated Players Podcast, we are back and this week we're talking about MLS Commissioner Don Garber's thoughts on the state of the US Open Cup and we're talking about MLS teams not releasing players for the U20 World Cup. Don Garber had some tough criticism for the state of the current US Open Cup, and we're here talking about if his criticism is just, or if he's being a bit hypocritical (hint, it's a bit of both). After that, we're talking about MLS teams, specifically the Chicago Fire, not releasing players for the U20 World Cup, and also Jim Curtain's thoughts on releasing players.Recorded on: 5/6/2023Let us know your thoughts and if we got it right or right!Send any emails with questions or comments to: thedppod@gmail.comFollow the Pod on Social Media!Website: https://thedppod.buzzsprout.com/Twitter: https://twitter.com/TheDPPod1Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/designated_players_podcast_/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheDPPodTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@thedppod

We're back with another packed episode of the AFTN Soccer Show as we chat Vancouver Whitecaps, Vancouver FC, Major League Soccer, and the Canadian Premier League. The Whitecaps are in Spain and getting set for the first of what is now going to be two preseason matches in Espana against European opposition. We look ahead to those games and chat about the new man in camp, Senegal international centre back, Salif Sane. Is there a real chance he could sign or is this just a win-win situation for both club and player? Would he need to be a DP if he did? And what about those injury concerns? We also look at some of the news coming out of Montreal as Kei Kamara looks to move on and they look to move on Kamal Miller. Could either or both end up in Vancouver? One man that was in Vancouver this past week was MLS Commissioner Don Garber. But why?! Turning our attention to the Canadian Premier league, we bring you a quick 2022 season in review, as we sum up each club's year in one to three words, look at the demise of FC Edmonton and ahead to some future expansion plans, including a third team here in BC. This year sees Vancouver FC take to the pitch for their inaugural season. We look at their slow offseason build, chat with head coach Afshin Ghotbi, and hear from their first ever signing, goalkeeper Callum Irving. All of this and Armchair Loyal are back in this episode's Wavelength and we continue paying tribute to the legend that was Terry Hall.
