As many of you will know, Uma Dinsmore Tuli has been a powerful force for good in many fields for decades, including Yoga, Menstruality, and women's health. She describes herself as a writer, an educator, a Hyperactive Yoginī, a mother of three and a devotee to the Dark Mother. Today we chat about the cycles that guide Uma's life, from the planets, to the moon, to her early relationship with her cycle and how it led her to develop Womb Yoga and write the best known of her six books, Yoni Shakti, a feminist retelling of yoga. All the way to Uma's menopause process, which happened during the crucible of Covid and being silenced due to a legal battle, and the unstoppable flow of creativity power it awakened within her. The golden thread we track throughout the conversation is how we can experience our blood, our orgasms, our pregnancy and pregnancy losses, our lactation, and our menopause as extraordinary portals to power, but only if we're conscious of them, and if we respect them. We explore:What happened when Uma showed up to her yoga sessions, as a new mother, with a postpartum body, how the practices - as they were being taught - didn't meet the needs of her bleeding, lactating and how this inspired her to write the book that she needed: Yoni Shakti. The healing power of circling as women as a radical act of resistance to patriarchal and colonial oppression, and as a pathway to recultivating our trust in each other. Why we need to decolonise our sleep - as a way to recover our menstrual and menopause health - which is one of the reasons why Uma wrote her new book, Nidra Shakti: the Power of Rest - an illustrated, decolonial encyclopedia of Yoga Nidra. ---Receive Red School's free video training: Love Your Cycle, Discover the Power of Menstrual Cycle Awareness to Revolutionise Your Life - www.redschool.net/love---The Menstruality Podcast is hosted by Red School. In this episode, I was both privileged to sit with, and deeply inspired by, my guest, Uma Dinsmore-Tuli, PhD. Uma is the author of Yoni Shakti, as well as many other books, and her work, along with Vicki Noble's, set something alight in me. As I read her book, I saw written in plain and clear language what my body-heart-mind had always known: there is a feminine source-point for yoga that is the key or code to understanding the truth of the practice. Uma helps me to unpack this awareness, and she and I cover many topics that are challenging but, hopefully, ultimately liberating. We do touch on some sensitive subjects, so be prepared for a big conversation. In this episode, we talk about: How yoga has changed since Uma met (and fell in love with!) yoga in the 60s The abuse of power within largely patriarchal, commercially-driven yoga lineages The "yoga industrial complex" Why Uma no longer refers to herself as a yoga teacher How women can meet yoga as cyclical beings (menstruation, pregnancy, postpartum, menopause), and how we can all get more out of our yoga practice (hint: it involves more rest!) The natural siddhis and altered states of the feminine experience and how yoga seeks to emulate them The exploitation of yoga teachers in the current, unsustainable studio-based business model Yoga Nidra beyond its commercial trademarks - as a practice that is perhaps as old as humanity and found (in some form) across multiple indigenous cultures Uma's new book, Nidra Shakti, and her process of writing and researching How Uma's Celtic roots manifest in her yoga practice How Uma developed Womb Yoga The importance of education and community (sangha) in breaking through the barriers to collective healing and empowerment And so much more...!! Throughout this episode, Uma advocates for a holistic, inclusive, therapeutic approach to yoga that honours the body's natural cycles and supports collective healing. This podcast provides an in-depth exploration of yoga's commercialisation, the importance of reclaiming indigenous and feminine cyclical wisdom, and the empowerment of women through respectful and individualised yoga practices (and a lot more rest!). I cannot wait to share Uma's body of wisdom with you!   About Uma Dinsmore-Tuli: Uma Dinsmore-Tuli inspires tired humans to restore rhythmic cycles of health through rest. She shares simple tools and yoga therapeutic techniques to recover health and reconnect to embodied wisdom. Uma met yoga in 1969, at the age of four, and fell in love. She's been practising ever since, and teaching yoga since 1994. A yoga therapist with special expertise in yoga therapy for women's health, Uma identifies her teachings as “post-lineage” yoga, rooted in yoga tantra and drawing on a variety of yogic traditions to share deeply nourishing and enlivening practices appropriate for contemporary life. Uma works internationally, sharing yoga retreats, trainings, and empowerments that support the natural arising of prana shakti: the power of life. She trains specialist teachers in Total Yoga Nidra and Yoni Shakti Well Woman Yoga Therapy for menstrual and menopausal health, pregnancy, birth, and postnatal recovery. Uma is also the author of six books: Nidra Shakti: The Power of Rest: An Illustrated Encyclopaedia of Yoga Nidra (due for release July 2023) Yoni Shakti: A Woman's Guide to Power and Freedom through Yoga and Tantra (2014/2020) Yoga Nidra Made Easy (2022) The Celtic School of Yoga (2016) Yoga for Pregnancy and Birth (2010) Mother's Breath (2005) Uma is also Co-Founder of Yoga Nidra Network (2011) and the mother of three children. Her practice and teaching respect the cyclical powers of the living earth and honour human life cycles as spiritual initiations (including menarche, conscious menstruation, menopause, birth, and postnatal recovery). This week on the podcast I share my experience of teaching to private groups, most recently teaching yoga to a group here on the coast last week. I don't do these often but when I do I am always met with a push-pull sensation - The tug of tension between sharing all of what and who I am and yet measuring it, drip-feeding it and tailoring it to the group. And truthfully, I never quite know what to expect. How will they feel when I start with unusual breath work practices, or talk to them about their womb centre, or have them working with energy, or doing bizarre practices to unscramble their brain? And yet, every single time I'm shown that I should question such things. When a women is invited home into her body an inner spark is lit, a curiosity awakened, a remembering even… By the end of these sessions someone always asks: “Claire, do you know where I can find someone who teaches like you do…” Which is usually met with me sucking in air, deeply, before sighing and saying - “I'm sorry, I don't know…” Here's the thing… I do know where to send you for Kundalini. I do know who can hold you through Womb Yoga. I know precisely who can teach you yin. Or the many breath work teachers I've had. But I can't show you someone who weaves it together, who intuitively blends it and who offers it from her heart (and from 15 years of self exploration) in my signature. We all have our own signature. We all have our own unique essence. My essence - in a nutshell - a co-creation of many learnings, lessons and elements unique to my soul. If you've been here a while (if you're new, Hi, welcome!) you'll know I've grappled with the way I learn, co-create, tailor, mash-up and blend, rewrite and make teachings, practices, guidance all my own. Thinking it should be just ONE thing I offer and become an expert at. I'm now at a place where I can own that when you work with me, you actually get ME. Not THAT tool. Or THAT modality. Or THAT piece of wisdom. You get me… and yes, my bag is fully of magic tricks. But it's me and the way I hold space, midwife and teach (and how interpret and use those bags of tricks). You get ME - the one who intuits the room, reads the energy of each individual and tailors the experience to create cohesion. Coherence. Medicine. … Now here is where I want to bring you into this. Because none of this is possible without your participation. We dance together… It's one thing for me to highlight how far I've come in owning my incredibly unique, layered and medicinal ways (and I do so as an invitation so stay tuned). But none of that matters without factoring in YOU, who you are, what you bring to the space (that includes your energy, your story, your history, your wounds, your life, your trauma). So let me start here by saying… One of the most important aspects of being in service to women is SAFETY. My beautiful friend Tara Bliss, who I had the absolute pleasure of hosting a ceremony for her Heartbeat container says “There is a sense of comfort, safety and belonging that Claire creates for everyone that sits in circle with her. That is known and felt that it's possible because of the circles that Claire herself has sat in, received in, participated in and welcomed into her whole being. “ Join me in this episode as I unpack safety, the way it has unfolded on my own journey, and invite you in to question how important safety is for your growth, learning, healing but also simply for your daily embodied experience within life. Listen to Episode 096: It's been ONE year since we moved into our beautiful little home here on the CC. I can't actually quite believe we are celebrating this anniversary already. If you haven't already please listen to the back story - the manifesting and calling in of this home and relocation.  This has been a year of so much abundance, ease, flow and joy. Integrating, recalibrating and attuning especially to this home, the land and the nature we are surrounded by. Cycling through the seasons and rooting in. A year of expansion and growth in my business, through my own awakening of spiritual gifts and talents, in community and connection and so much more. In this year I have launched three programs, coached countless women, hosted multiple in-person and live workshops, co-facilitated a retreat for the divine Lorraine Murphy. Travelled twice (pre lockdown!). Learnt to garden and grow veggies. For those of you interested in knowing what I've studied/explored over the last 18 months see below. Some of this I've been immersed in for longer (and in fact the list is longer than this!) There has also been quite regular Kinesiology, Acupuncture and other forms of self-care.  But I just wanted to honour these people for their contribution to my mind-body-soul growth and healing.  I'm studied Reiki with Jason McGrice, Queen School with Julie Tenner, Deepened my training in Magdalene Frequency, Womb Yoga and Energetics with Ana Otero. Worked with hypnotherapist Rachel Crethar and my own secret weapon Julia Byrne from Soul Mastery. Business Energetics with Brittany Eastman. Marriage Counselling with Sarah Tolmie. Parenting course with Big Little Feelings. Gardening with The Healthy Patch. Tune in to the rest of the episode to help me celebrate this incredible year.  Subscribe: Itunes | Soundcloud Beautiful one, thank you for being here and listening. In this episode Dawn Lister and Daniel Groom are joined by special guest Uma Dinsmore Tuli to discuss Yoga Nidra for community support, social justice and planetary healing. It's a great listen and designed to inspire us all. Uma was first introduced to yoga at the age of four by her mother and began meditating at nine on a pilgrimage with her maternal grandmother. Yoga and meditation have been part of her daily life ever since. As a naturally curious and enquiring yogini, she has engaged passionately and critically with a variety of quite different schools of yoga, most especially Satyananda Yoga and Iyengar Yoga. After completing the Yoga Biomedical Trust Diploma in Yoga Therapy in 1999, Uma has continued to find the fully integrated approach of yoga therapy to be the most practical route to the healing power of yoga. She further trained in Structural Yoga Therapy and Ayurvedic Yoga Therapy with Mukunda Stiles, and works as a yoga therapist with special expertise in women's health. Uma has a PhD in Communications and is a recognised teacher of the British Wheel of Yoga. She has been a training tutor in Yoga Therapy since 2001 and also teaches British Wheel of Yoga In-service training days. As a mother of three, she has been both personally and professionally engaged with the development of pregnancy yoga, yoga for birth and postnatal recovery, and family yoga, and has been training teachers in this field since 2002, when she first tutored for the Birthlight Trust. Since then she has delighted in creating her own courses to promote excellence of teaching in this field, including Well Woman Yoga and a uniquely responsive Integrated Mother and Baby yoga teacher training. With the intention of widening access to pregnancy and postnatal yoga, she founded Sitaram Yoga with her husband in 1998, and it continues to offer pregnancy and postantal yoga classes in London, including at King's College and St Thomas's hopsitals. The heart of Uma's daily personal and therapeutic practice is yoga nidra, which she believes to be the most powerfully transformative of all yoga techniques. She first encountered the technique at the Satyananda Yoga Centre in 1995, and has been exploring all aspects of it with fascination ever since. She has studied a variety of different approaches to the practice both in India and the UK, with nationally renowned exponents including Swami Muktidharma (Satyananda Acharya, New Zealand), Mukunda Stiles, and Richard Miller. She has refined a range of particularly feminine therapeutic applications of yoga nidra, including its use for the promotion of fertility, positive birthing, postnatal recovery and conscious menstrual health a source of spiritual empowerment. She has taught yoga nidra to hundreds of people, in every conceivable environment, from nursery schools, hospitals and airports, to giant geodesic domes filled with yogis sheltering from wild storms at yoga festivals and gatherings. She has been sharing the technique with teachers from all lineages on Yoga Therapy training courses and retreats since 1999. Uma leads retreats and courses worldwide, sharing the approach to yoga therapy set out in her CDs, DVDs and books: Mother's Breath, Teach Yourself Yoga for Pregnancy and Birth, and Feel Confident: Yoga for Living. Her latest book Yoni Shakti is about the evolution of feminine spiritual authority through yoga and tantra. Uma is currently refining Womb Yoga through a series of international workshops and retreats. https://yonishakti.co/  https://www.yoganidranetwork.org/   https://www.instagram.com/umadinsmoretuli/   ***   From The Heart is a podcast about Yoga, Mindfulness, healing and wellbeing from Dawn Lister and Daniel Groom, founders of Anahata Yoga Centre, Leigh-on-Sea, Essex, UK. Conversations in this light hearted, kind and honest podcast series brings together people who have found ways to practise self-care in their lives, by sharing their knowledge, experiences and insights. Anahata is a heart centred and nurturing Wellbeing Studio in Leigh on Sea, Essex. In this episode of Unravelling, I got to speak to Rebecca Wilson, a wonderful WOMBan who is on a quest to hold space for women to heal their connection to their womb space and menstrual cycle. Rebecca Wilson facilitates Womb Yoga, Womb Connection- Healing- Awakening, Embodied Free and is a Womens Wellness coach. She supports women through all stages of their menstrual health and the years beyond menstruation. Rebecca’s offerings are drawn from various lineages of teachings, womb awakening, womb connection, energy healing & the shamanic womb medicine wheel. She has been called a spiritual midwife for women’s womb awakening. In this episode we discuss... Rebecca’s journey with contraceptive methods and synthetic hormones, including the pill and the implant. Her own womb awakening journey during yoga teacher training in Bali a few years ago. The shame that has been built up about menstruation and our shared passion for bringing more conversation to everyday life around our cycles. Some simple practices to begin the journey of awakening to the wisdom that the womb offers. And much, much more! Connect with Rebecca at www.rebecca-wilson.com Follow Rebecca on Instagram here. Connect with Rebecca on Facebook here. Rebecca and I met on the wonderful Uma Dinsmore-Tuli’s Womb Yoga Teacher Training course earlier in 2018. I want to express such gratitude towards Uma for delivering this work and teaching us her wisdom - it was a truly awakening experience for all who came together in circle.
