In this episode we talk to Aneta Idczak, an experienced Yoga, Mindfulness and Embodiment Teacher about how yoga teachers need to become aware of the levels of trauma people in their classes may be experiencing and to understand ways to hold a class that does not retraumatise the students and the power of a therapeutic yoga practise a tool for healing and support. We discussed "what is safety", we looked at what consent means within a class structure and the importance of staying curious and open both as a teacher and a student. We also spoke about the importance of working through our own trauma and wellbeing - "If your practice has become your teaching you are out of balance." Aneta also spoke about being Polish and how wonderful the Polish people have been opening their arms to the Ukrainian refugees - a true sign of compassion. Aneta, Daniel and Dawn were deeply moved by the importance of community as a healing tool and model for our world going forward. Gone are the days of the GURU's and the commercialisation of yoga, a new world is emerging post covid. In a world that feels volatile and unstable community and kindness, a deeper understanding of the need for trauma sensitive work within our communities that include people who do not practise yoga, therapists, body workers, and others who can support creates a world that is open to the possibility of change and greater love and wisdom. We loved our chat with Aneta and felt we had so much more to talk about. Aneta Idczak is an experienced Yoga, Mindfulness and Embodiment Teacher, Yoga Teacher Trainer and Yoga Business Mentor, as well as Somatic Coach, BSE and Focusing Practitioner and Bodyworker; She is a Founder of Golden Mandala Yoga-Soma Institute providing accredited Trauma-informed Yoga and Embodied Resilience Teacher Training and Mentoring (TREY), and various CPDs on Somatics and Trauma-informed Yoga. Aneta works with needs-led integrative approach drawing on three decades of studying various psychological, therapeutic and body-focused modalities, and her approach is further influenced by over two decades of working in Social Care and in community with Trauma, Mental Health, Addiction, DV and child protection issues, and training and supervising front line workers. In our first episode of Season 3 we talk to Anna Ashby, a senior teacher and trainer in the UK. Anna specialises in Restorative Yoga where diving deep into embodied experience with a focus on nervous system health enables a profound shift of perception and state that supports well-being and integration. Restorative practice is mostly passive and breath oriented where the body is supported on bolsters and blankets and held for longer periods of time than in an active class. The interiority and stillness embodied by this type of yoga practice shifts the nervous system out of ‘fight or flight' into a deeply felt relaxation response. In this episode we talk about her new book, Restorative Yoga: Power Presence Practice for Teachers and Trainees which elucidates and celebrates this powerful style of practice so important in maintaining balance and the state of equilibrium. It serves as an in depth guide for those interested in going deeper into Restorative Yoga. About Anna Ashby Anna has been studying and practicing yoga for over 30 years and teaching for over 20. She holds the highest level of certification with Yoga Alliance E-RYT-500. She also holds a B.A. (hons) in Modern Dance which she gained from Mills College in California in 1991. Anna's teaching style has evolved from her study of dance, in-depth training within styles of modern postural yoga focussing on alignment and precision, and immersion in a wide variety of yoga practices and teachings while living for 12 years in a yoga ashram in upstate New York in the 1990's. Anna weaves together flowing and artful movement, healthy alignment and stillness - all of which express the essence of yoga as awareness. She curates a purposeful sequence at a slow and measured pace which enables a process that can result in deep connection and joyful presence. Chloe Jane Prince is a Food Freedom Coach, helping people heal from disordered eating, low body confidence and so much more. Chloe herself struggled with anorexia, disordered eating and body dysmorphia after suffering sexual abuse aged 11. In this episode we talk about intuitive eating, the obsession surrounding diet culture and BMI as well as Chloe's personal journey, experiences and her approach to her recovery. After years of struggling through inpatient stays, dietetic support and endless counselling, Chloe began to wonder whether recovery was actually possible. Until she found coaching, yoga and meditation and with it a new approach to recovery, one where you are taught to come back to your body and yourself and has never looked back. She then went on to certify as a Nutritionist, Life Coach specialising in Disordered Eating and Eating Disorder Recovery Coach so that she could help others heal too. And that is exactly what she now does within her coaching and online courses. Instead of 'fixing the food' she works to help people re-learn how to feel, to listen to their body, eat intuitively and heal trauma so they can live a life they love. She believes that diet culture and fat phobia are so engrained in the world we live in, and it has led us to be increasingly disconnected from ourselves and our bodies. What we eat, what we do and how we move is so often influenced by the shoulds and shame of diet culture and fat phobia rather than listening to the wisdom that exists within our bodies. If you want to lean in to doing the inner work to help you heal from disordered eating, then Chloe has a four-week online Food Freedom Breakthrough Programme to help you learn to come back to your body, heal your limiting beliefs, find your identity and be your own medicine: https://chloejaneprince.com/food-freedom-breakthrough-programme/ Chloe also has a free private Facebook group she serves called The Food Freedom Tribe: https://www.facebook.com/groups/thefoodfreedomtribe You can also find Chloe on Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/chloejaneprince/ Further reading recommendation: Shuggie Bain by Douglas Stewart. ******* From The Heart is a podcast about Yoga, Mindfulness, healing and wellbeing from Dawn Lister and Daniel Groom, founders of Anahata Yoga Centre, Leigh-on-Sea, Essex, UK. In this From The Heart episode, we speak to Jess Glenny, a movement teacher, facilitator, therapist, and writer. In our conversation with Jess we talk about hypermobility, what it is and how we can support ourselves or our hypermobile students. Jess has written an amazing book on this subject, Hypermobility on the Yoga Mat: A Guide to Hypermobility-Aware Teaching and Practice. Jess believes moving body practices are ways of putting all of ourselves into motion. Through moving and witnessing, we create opportunities for what our body knows (but our mind may not yet be conscious of) to surface into awareness. By being present with ourselves in this fluid way, we are able to become gradually more aligned with our experience in each moment, and so live with increasing spontaneity, fullness and meaning. Ellen Lee has been exploring Yoga for some 45 years and has been teaching for the last 28 years. Ellen trained with The Yoga For Health Foundation in general and remedial Yoga. The Foundations' ethos was "Yoga for all". Ellen has been The Chair of The Independent Yoga Network for several years now, an organisation that she is very passionate about, and we were delighted to be in conversation with her to discuss how the pandemic has created change for the yoga world and how the Independent Yoga Network are continuously looking at ways to help the industry come away from incorrect or stereotypical offerings, bringing a more positive change to how the practise is portrayed and taught. It's been a challenging time for yoga teachers and students during the pandemic, having to practise online. We discuss how Yoga metaphorically unravels knots, allowing us to create space for new energy and growth. Holding energy from unresolved trauma, both physical and emotional gets in the way of living our life to the fullest. Ellen discusses how yoga isn't just a physical practise, it's not about being fit or lean, rather it holds space for everyone of all abilities to nurture themselves from inside out, to connect with themselves from an emotional place and to practise a form of self care that is unparalleled. Ellen is passionate about the future of yoga teaching around the world and is interested to see what emerges from this year's pandemic and what changes may arise from the time we have had to pause and reflect. We are thrilled to have discussed the ethos behind the Independent Yoga Network and her relationship with her yoga practise. This episode provides reassurance, emotion and a perspective that will provide comfort to anyone, regardless of where they are on their yoga journey. *** From The Heart is a podcast about Yoga, Mindfulness, healing and wellbeing from Dawn Lister and Daniel Groom, founders of Anahata Yoga Centre, Leigh-on-Sea, Essex, UK. In conversation with Suzanne Alderson, in this bonus podcast episode we discuss how Suzanne's traumatic ordeal with her suicidal daughter led her to launching a community, now a registered charity, called Parenting Mental Health. When her 14 year old daughter became suicidal in 2015, following a period of sustained bullying, Suzanne found herself in a desperate place, facing an uncertain future with little support and even less understanding. While her daughter was immediately wrapped in professional care, Suzanne found that there was no support available to help her or her husband make sense of the situation and give their child the best kind of care. One night on suicide watch, she decided if she ever got through this time, she would ensure no other family had to go through this alone. In 2016, as her daughter improved, she set up a Facebook group to try and help other families facing their child's mental illness. The community, called Parenting Mental Health, is now a registered charity with a mission to end generational mental illness and help 1m parents by 2025. It currently supports over 25,000 parents from around the world who have a child with poor mental health. The charity offers a range of interventions such as Listening Circles and In Person Meet ups, training, Q&As with experts, social events and peer mentorship and community support and aims to support parents through their experience so they can support their child through theirs. Partnering not Parenting is the approach that Suzanne conceived when her daughter became ill to deal with the challenging situations they faced as a family. Ignoring standard parenting wisdom, she took an alternative view of what was required to ensure her daughter stayed alive and then recovered. Going against the ‘common sense', her approach successfully saw her and her daughter through a debilitating 3 years. This approach has helped many of the parents in the community to adjust their own behaviour by using the 3 step approach of Step Down, Stand Beside, and Travel Together, and connect with their child through very difficult circumstances. While mental health services often look for the part parents play in the creation of the illness, Suzanne recognises the essential role parents play in supporting, shielding, and strengthening a child as they progress towards recovery, and she offers a range of training and mentoring to help educate and empower families to come through this time in the best shape they can. Her first book, Never Let Go - How to Parent Your Child through Mental illness - was published in 2020 by Vermilion, an imprint of Penguin RandomHouse, and she is currently writing her second. In 2018, Suzanne was recognised as one of Facebook's 115 most meaningful global community leaders and awarded a Fellowship to the inaugural Facebook Community Leadership Program. In 2020, Facebook recognised Parenting Mental Health as one of 16 of the most meaningful communities in the world. Suzanne is a regular speaker on mental health, her lived experiences and parenting through adversity, as well as digital community building and how community can impact on health outcomes. Suzanne is qualified in Mental Health First Aid and was awarded the title Digital Mother of the year in 2020. In this very special yet poignant bonus episode, in conversation with Jane Wake, one of Dawn's early influences in the wellbeing world, we discuss the topical events surrounding women in the fitness and wellness industries, body image and perceptions surrounding women within fitness. We discuss why female fitness and wellness professionals should receive greater respect for the important work they do, ask why yoga studios are being treated differently to gyms, what it has been like to adapt during the pandemic and how we have used our skillset to support our community, all the while being jeered at by Boris Johnson and his fellow parliamentarians. Our conversation includes the dialogue arising around women's safety, in light of the murder of Sarah Everard, our right to protest and the importance of being heard, personally and as a community. We hope this episode encourages more awareness and stimulates the conversations needed for real change to occur. Top fitness professional Jane Wake is one of the most highly qualified, inspirational and respected talents in the fitness arena. In this episode we speak to Louise Hunt, a lover of wild food, sustainability and nature. Foraging for wild food has increased in popularity over recent years, perhaps as a result of the rising awareness of eating local, fresh and organic ingredients. Foraging generally refers to searching, identifying and collecting food resources in the wild, including herbs, plants, fruit, nuts and mushrooms. It's all about cooking, preserving and eating healthy and nutritious food while understanding how to maintain the balance of our natural environment. Louise began foraging for wild food a little over two years ago, foraging helped her to find peace and a connection to the outdoors. Louise has always loved the outdoors, and began growing her own vegetables in Spring 2020. Foraging has solidified her love of being around plants and nature. Louise is currently a caseworker for young people at risk of exploitation in Southend-on-Sea, prior to that she was a 999 operator for the Metropolitan Police and a youth worker for many years. She is now embracing a career transition during the current pandemic and is exploring taking her career in a new direction with self-care at the forefront, whilst using foraging as a way to relax and find balance in what can sometimes be a chaotic world. In this episode we speak to Zahra Khan, a medical degree student and an keen advocate of Women's Health, discrimination and social acceptance. Social acceptance can be defined as tolerating the differences and diversity in others because most people attempt to look and act like others do in order to fit in. Zahra is passionate about understanding the way women's health is delivered in a society shaped by gender, race, culture, sexuality, religion, class, disability and citizenship status. People are often pigeon holed into 'neat' categories, which are based on old patriarchal systems designed to create dominance and control over CIS and Trans women. This system of oppressive hierarchy erases the multifaceted individuality of each individual, their emotional, physical, psychological, sexual and spiritual needs. Ultimately making the world a smaller and less interesting place for us all. In our conversation we discuss discrimination in healthcare based on gender and race and how our society is changing to accommodate better inclusivity and awareness. We also discuss the difference between 'women' and 'female' from a biological perspective and from a socially constructed viewpoint, aka the choice of how we identify ourselves and explore the research and dialogue which is needed to rectify the imbalance, perception and assumption that continues to surround us. Join us in conversation with Diana Herve, a Registered Nutritional Therapist (BSc(Hons), DTLLS, Dip.NCFED, Cert.EFT, mBANT), where we discuss eating to support your health, eating disorders, EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) and Diana's passion for taking advantage of what's on your doorstep. Diana qualified as a Registered Nutritional Therapist 19 years ago, a career path she took after being a professional cook & caterer, for 22 years, and in that time she set up and ran a cookery school from home, whilst her 3 children were very young. She found it manic and incredibly stressful, trying to juggle a family and working long hours. And just like she sees in so many of my clients nowadays, the chronic stress eventually undermined her own health. She ate herself back to wellness, following the recommendations of a very forward-thinking doctor and became fascinated by how practicing functional medicine and nutritional rehabilitation was so effective in rebalancing the body's various Systems, to bring about good health and wellbeing. Diana now runs a private nutritional therapy practice (Diana Hervé Nutrition), addressing various health issues (gut/digestive, weight management, hormone imbalance/autoimmune, cholesterol, Eating Disorders/emotional eating). She holds a Diploma – Practitioner in Eating Disorders from the National Centre for Eating Disorders, (Accr. British Psychological Soc.), and a Diploma in Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT). In this episode Dawn Lister and Daniel Groom are joined by special guest Uma Dinsmore Tuli to discuss Yoga Nidra for community support, social justice and planetary healing. It's a great listen and designed to inspire us all. Uma was first introduced to yoga at the age of four by her mother and began meditating at nine on a pilgrimage with her maternal grandmother. Yoga and meditation have been part of her daily life ever since. As a naturally curious and enquiring yogini, she has engaged passionately and critically with a variety of quite different schools of yoga, most especially Satyananda Yoga and Iyengar Yoga. After completing the Yoga Biomedical Trust Diploma in Yoga Therapy in 1999, Uma has continued to find the fully integrated approach of yoga therapy to be the most practical route to the healing power of yoga. She further trained in Structural Yoga Therapy and Ayurvedic Yoga Therapy with Mukunda Stiles, and works as a yoga therapist with special expertise in women's health. Uma has a PhD in Communications and is a recognised teacher of the British Wheel of Yoga. She has been a training tutor in Yoga Therapy since 2001 and also teaches British Wheel of Yoga In-service training days. As a mother of three, she has been both personally and professionally engaged with the development of pregnancy yoga, yoga for birth and postnatal recovery, and family yoga, and has been training teachers in this field since 2002, when she first tutored for the Birthlight Trust. Since then she has delighted in creating her own courses to promote excellence of teaching in this field, including Well Woman Yoga and a uniquely responsive Integrated Mother and Baby yoga teacher training. With the intention of widening access to pregnancy and postnatal yoga, she founded Sitaram Yoga with her husband in 1998, and it continues to offer pregnancy and postantal yoga classes in London, including at King's College and St Thomas's hopsitals. The heart of Uma's daily personal and therapeutic practice is yoga nidra, which she believes to be the most powerfully transformative of all yoga techniques. She first encountered the technique at the Satyananda Yoga Centre in 1995, and has been exploring all aspects of it with fascination ever since. She has studied a variety of different approaches to the practice both in India and the UK, with nationally renowned exponents including Swami Muktidharma (Satyananda Acharya, New Zealand), Mukunda Stiles, and Richard Miller. She has refined a range of particularly feminine therapeutic applications of yoga nidra, including its use for the promotion of fertility, positive birthing, postnatal recovery and conscious menstrual health a source of spiritual empowerment. She has taught yoga nidra to hundreds of people, in every conceivable environment, from nursery schools, hospitals and airports, to giant geodesic domes filled with yogis sheltering from wild storms at yoga festivals and gatherings. She has been sharing the technique with teachers from all lineages on Yoga Therapy training courses and retreats since 1999. Uma leads retreats and courses worldwide, sharing the approach to yoga therapy set out in her CDs, DVDs and books: Mother's Breath, Teach Yourself Yoga for Pregnancy and Birth, and Feel Confident: Yoga for Living. Her latest book Yoni Shakti is about the evolution of feminine spiritual authority through yoga and tantra. Uma is currently refining Womb Yoga through a series of international workshops and retreats. https://yonishakti.co/ https://www.yoganidranetwork.org/ https://www.instagram.com/umadinsmoretuli/ *** From The Heart is a podcast about Yoga, Mindfulness, healing and wellbeing from Dawn Lister and Daniel Groom, founders of Anahata Yoga Centre, Leigh-on-Sea, Essex, UK. We are delighted to hold conversation with Simon Low, Vikki Stevenson and Ruth McNeil to talk about the Yoga Garden Party, a yoga festival that raises funds for The Hope Foundation (www.thehopefoundation.org.uk) which supports street-connected children and vulnerable communities in Kolkata, India. The event has been running for 10 years and has now raised in excess of £100,000 for the charity. In June last year, due to the devastating effects of both the Covid-19 pandemic and a super-cyclone which hit Kolkata in May, the event went virtual with classes running online via Zoom. Simon, Ruth and Vikki were due to be taking their second yoga trip to Kolkata this January, raising further much needed funds for HOPE. Due to the ongoing pandemic this trip has had to be postponed, but they have decided instead to again bring some of the UK's best loved yoga teachers directly to your homes as part of Yoga for HOPE offering yoga classes throughout January. Forest bathing is the practice of spending time in the forest for better health, happiness and a sense of calm. It literally means to bathe in the atmosphere of the forest, immersing your senses in your surroundings. Discovery, curiosity, awareness, openness, awe and joy. It's a slow sensory walk through the forest using mindfulness, meditation, breathing and walking exercises. Join us in conversation with Ruth Mortimer, a Forest Bathing Practitioner, to discuss the practice as a way to reconnect with nature and to calm those feelings of stress. Research has proven that spending time around trees can reduce blood pressure, lower stress, boost energy and boost the immune system. We have all experienced grief in our life, the loss of a loved one, a pet, a job, a relationship. And then there is collective grief, the grief we are feeling right now around how our whole world is changing due the unique circumstances we are living in with Covid-19 and how that affects us as a community, a society. Join us in conversation with Dipti Solanki, a grief coach, to discuss why the grieving process is important, how we can support ourselves and each other as we walk through the challenges that grief presents. Dipti Solanki is a rare breed: she isn't afraid to sit with her own or other people's discomfort. As a homeopath, life and grief coach, she walks alongside women who are no longer willing to live lives of resentment, tense relationships, deep sorrow, frustrated ambition and hollow friendships. Instead, Dipti guides them through a deep healing process that clears out the stagnant grief that keeps them stuck, and shows them the amazing potential that each day holds. Dipti was devastated by grief early in her own life. Like many people, she thought she was “fine” until persistent depression and severe anxiety took over. The process that Dipti takes her clients through mirrors what she experienced, which is why she's so committed to spreading the message that positive change and healing ARE possible. When Dipti learned that her unresolved grief was keeping her from meaningful relationships, living her truth and feeling true happiness, she dedicated her life to helping women clear out the sludge of old emotional wounds and live life beyond their wildest imaginings. Her clients have never looked back, and neither has she. Dipti Solanki is a qualified Grief & Life Coach, registered Homeopath and lectures at the College of Integrated Nutrition and Homeopathy.'
