We should all be watching and listing to Davy Jones. Davy came into this conversation with more nuggets about organizing, connecting, and taking a stand against organizations than almost any other guest I have had on this podcast.I can't wait for you to listen.KEY TAKEAWAYS *First, I would just really love to mention that the UK has a labor union for yoga pros. This is a thing that happens around the world, and I am excited to explore this conversation more in the coming months.*In spite of many objections by SO many (really SO SO many) people I have talked to in the yoga space, a union actually could help yoga professionals in North America. The union could do for us what it does for UK workers–provide advocacy, health insurance, support, and accountability for the profession of yoga. Collectively, we are better together. Unions can be part of our solution.*Ever since I started getting involved with advocacy work in regards to the IAYT (International Association of Yoga Therapists) people keep asking me some variation of the same question. “Are YOU starting an organization?” But this begs the question I asked Davy about the British Wheel of Yoga. What is the point of an organization? We have a lot of orgs that claim to be doing good work in the field, but very few can come to the table with receipts. The British Wheel of Yoga is just one of many in this regard.*Building community and service into our business models is SO crucial for aligning our businesses with yogic principles. It is inevitable that we will need to price our services in such a way that we make enough money to keep our doors open, but unpacking the question of how we give back is key to going forward in our industry with integrity and respect for the tradition and practice of yoga.*UK Community Outreach Network is the coolest idea I have heard in such a long time. Honestly, can I interview everyone who is involved in this so we can tell the world how it works? Please? Also, does anyone in the States want to work on this with me?*Let's chat about an organization that keeps our students safe. What does this look like? How can we support this sort of organization? *I don't know how many times I have referenced BREWED, a program I do at my studio for studentship, but please go ahead and steal my idea. Studentship courses can offer people a deeper understanding of yoga and yogic principles without actually needing to train people to be yoga teachers. *What do you feel about regulation in our industry? I do truly believe that we are doing good enough work to stand up overall regulation as an industry. Does that mean licensing? I don't know if that is the answer but we certainly can stand up to general oversight as an industry.*We ARE part of the solution of the crisis of public health. Davy could not have said that better. When you are feeling down, please remember that. RESOURCESWorking In Yoga WebsiteWorking In Yoga NewsletterDavy's Website Brighton Yoga Foundation

Carolin's extensive experience means that she is lucky enough to have met, interviewed and taught many amazing and fascinating people. Her passion for living well through yoga is sincere and her classes are filled with laughter. Carolin's first ever interaction with yoga was around 1973, in the USA, where she lived with her uncle and his family. Carolin watched ‘Lilias Yoga and You', a television show hosted by Lilias Folan, North America's ‘First Lady of Yoga'. Her simple yoga routines, which Carolin practised religiously day and night, gave her structure, stability and comfort. Her early yoga days back in Düsseldorf, Germany, came during Carolin's university years. Students had to meet in private houses as there were no yoga studios. Carolin's fellow yogis at the time were the musicians Ralf Hütter and Florian Schneider-Esleben, best known as the founding members of the electronic band Kraftwerk. Another yoga friend was one of the producers of Electric Music and Rheingold, Lothar Manteuffel. There seemed to be a special connection between music, yoga and Germans searching for a better life. Before Carolin became a British Wheel of Yoga teacher 20 years ago, she used to work as a TV presenter and producer for RTL in Luxemburg and Germany. Throughout her TV career, Carolin met and interviewed all kinds of famous and interesting people, but behind the glittery TV world she always craved for a family of her own and a life in London. When Carolin and her husband Jörg sold their London-based TV production company, they used some of the profits to found and run an award-winning charity, My Life Films, training young filmmakers to produce personalised films for people living with dementia. Today, they are still trustees of this charity and have since overseen the launch of the world's first streaming platform for people with cognitive needs, My Life TV – a kind of ‘Netflix for Dementia' – all non-profit. Carolin likes to keep busy and is lucky enough to live in leafy Richmond upon-Thames on the outskirts of London, enjoying the beauty of her neighbourhood with her husband, 3 grown-up daughters, 2 baby granddaughters and labradoodle, Bowie. Carolin's book is now available on Amazon. About the Guest Lucy Crisfield is a speaker at the World Yoga Festival, a plenary speaker at the British Wheel of Yoga Festival, and the founder of ‘Original Wisdom', through which she shares the inner teachings of mantra and yoga philosophy with sound, meditation, and scholarly precision. Lucy has just finished writing a book with the same title as her signature course, ‘The Sounds of Sanskrit ~ The Language of Yoga'. Taking seven years to write, the book is a direct expression of her own experience in response to the meditative inquiry and realizations that the Sanskrit sounds have brought forth. Lucy studied the violin and piano at the Royal College of Music from the age of eleven, and after receiving a first class honours degree in mathematics and Music, she left London to travel solo through twenty countries over five years in her quest for a deeper understanding of life. As well as immersing herself in yoga and finding herself at the feet of many revered teachers of the tradition, she also studied Arabic and the recitation of the Quran in Damascus, Yemen, and East London, and Hebrew at SOAS in London. Many years later, when back in London, Lucy eventually found the master of sound she had been looking for, Peter Harrison, who initiated her into the Advaita Vedanta tradition. Lucy now lives in the South West of England with her partner and two children, where she offers unique classes which share the teachings and sounds of the yoga tradition to illumine the intellect and connect us to the creative wisdom of the Self. In this episode, we discuss: How previous teachers have shaped the understanding of Sanskrit The difference between academic and vibratory approaches to Sanskrit The metaphysics of sound The difference between music and mantra The philosophy of sound in the modern yoga world The potential effects of mispronounced mantras The role of grammar in receiving Sanskrit's vibrational potency See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Ade Belcham used to think it was obvious that yoga was good for him – until he got a hip replacement in his early 50s. That made him ask some searching questions, which he explored in a recent article for Spectrum, the British Wheel of Yoga magazine. For the previous two decades, Ade was a devoted Ashtanga practitioner, studying regularly in Hawaii with Nancy Gilgoff. And although he's reappraised some of what he was doing, he's not out to bash yoga or Ashtanga. Instead, he's been exploring the patterns – both physical and mental – that shaped his approach and led to injury. As we discuss, there are broader implications to people's motivations for practising yoga. Ade identifies five – connection with others, exercise, well-being, identity and transformation – and reflects that “injuries helped me see that I was mixing up yoga as exercise with yoga for identity building”.This raises questions about how yoga gets conflated with postures, which the podcast explores. We also talk about a general resistance to critical thinking in yoga circles, as well as what it means to be authentic – and why asking “why” is a helpful tool, which can keep people grounded in what really matters. If you enjoy this conversation, and would like to fuel others, please consider subscribing or buy me a virtual drink. It was there that he obtained his teaching certificate and started teaching yoga. Since then, Dennis has taught yoga mainly in Port Moresby city around residential areas and public gyms, as he does not own a studio yet. He has been teaching Haha yoga, Vinyasa yoga, and yin yoga for almost five years since 2018. What's in the Yoga in Papua New Guinea episode? Yoga is blessings From the laboratory to the yoga studio What is the Active City Development Program? How do the people in Papua New Guinea respond to yoga? What to expect in the Yoga In Papua New Guinea episode of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast Teaching yoga in Papua New Guinea comes with challenges as many people perceive yoga as a religious practice conflicting with their Christian beliefs. However, Dennis perseveres and continues to teach, especially to foreigners and expatriates who are familiar with and interested in yoga. Despite the difficulties, he remains determined and carries out awareness campaigns. Yoga has had a profound impact on Dennis's life. It has not only improved his health, both physically and mentally, but it has also provided him with financial stability. As a yoga teacher, he earns enough to support his family and himself. Yoga has transformed his career path, shifting him from a laboratory analyst to a yoga teacher—a transition he is proud of and believes to be his true calling and purpose in life. Dennis describes Papua New Guinea as a beautiful country with diverse cultures, over 800 languages, and various traditions. While the country is still developing, its people are friendly, and rugby league is a popular sport. Overall, Dennis's story highlights the transformative power of yoga and his determination to overcome barriers to bring yoga to others in Papua New Guinea. Meditation is becoming more mainstream and an important component of healthy, mental life. In today's episode, Amy chats with Ranju Roy and David Charlton. Ranju has been practicing yoga since the mid-1980s. Ranju has taught many yoga classes, retreats, and workshops in the UK. He has taught at the British Wheel of Yoga (BWY) Congress, Association for Yoga Studies (aYs) Conventions, and many In-Service Trainings. David has been studying yoga since 1987. He also has an MA in Eastern Philosophy and a particular interest in Sanskrit, Vedic chanting, and yoga philosophy. Both Ranju and David train teachers through the organization Sādhana Mālā Yoga Training. Amy talks with Ranju Roy and Dave Charlton about yoga tradition, what is yoga vs. yoga therapy, Patanjali's Yoga Sutra, the nature of suffering in the mind and how we can move forward with our yoga communities/ sangha. Ranju and Dave have worked together in the UK for several decades creating workshops, teacher trainings and practicing as yoga therapists. They bring a refreshing viewpoint in that they have been committed to a tradition long-term, but they each remembered the goal of yoga was to become more authentically themselves. The path has lead each of them to understand with clarity what it means to be self-directed, to observe the patterns of their own minds and to continue to show up with an open heart and discriminating mind. They talk about the following:What does it mean to be in a yoga lineage or tradition? What are the benefits of being in the TK Tradition? What does it mean to take personal responsibility for your life? How can we spiritually mature and embody our own life? The difficulties in finding a teacherHow sangha can become our spiritual pathWhat is Yoga Therapy? Is Yoga different than Yoga Therapy? Was Patanjali a yoga therapist?Isn't all yoga therapeutic in nature? What was Desikachar's take on therapy? The guṇa and therapy If you would like to receive the free infographics and handouts that correspond to each episode on the Yoga Therapy Hour Podcast, please subscribe to our segmented email list. What if everything you've been told about how to look after your pelvic floor was wrong, and all those endless kegel exercises were actually doing you more harm that good? I'm joined today by Caroline Carty, lawyer turned somatic yoga teacher who very candidly shares her story of struggling with a pelvic prolapse. Despite spending many years teaching her class members all about the benefits of pelvic floor exercises the research suggests that this may actually not be the best solution. Caroline is an experienced yoga teacher who is passionate about the potential of yoga to heal bodies and minds and transform lives. Originally trained with The British Wheel of Yoga (BWY.Dip) with further qualifications in Meditation. Also a qualified Somatics Exercise Coach and a registered teacher of Yoga for Healthy Lower Backs (YHLB). Caroline sits on the UK Steering Group of YHLB, a social enterprise whose aim is to promote better back care throughout the UK. She also represents YHLB in the All Party Parliamentary Group on yoga in society. Caroline has an extensive knowledge of anatomy and physiology which informs her work with yoga as therapy particularly helping people with chronic back pain Caroline says "My interest in Women's health and gynaecology stems from my own experience of living with prolapse including many years of research, self-treatment and surgery. In sharing my experience with my students, I have discovered a huge silent majority of women dealing with the debilitating, humiliating and embarrassing effects of pelvic organ prolapse. My mission in this area is to shine a light on this topic, to support women to step out of shame and demand better treatment options. There is very exciting new research in this area and new treatment options are coming....." Caroline references the work of Anna Crowle, a physiotherapist who specialises in women's health using biotensegrity and myofascial release. I was really moved by my conversation with Emma, she emanated peace and kindness and her words stayed with me for a long time. She was born in Kent and had a highly successful international career in finance. She is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and worked as a Senior Analyst in London, New York and Hong Kong for HSBC working on an investment portfolio of $1bn. Following a life-changing visit to Jakarta, Indonesia, where she was held hostage at gun point, she discovered in herself a yearning to understand the deeper aspects of what it is to be a human being. Emma put her financial career on hold and began travelling and exploring yoga and meditation. She qualified as a British Wheel of Yoga instructor in 2003 and has since, for over 15 years, taught both yoga and meditation, simultaneously deepening her life-long interest in Buddhism. A chance meeting with a Buddhist Lama on her first visit to Bhutan in 2011 led to her studying Buddhism with this Lama and, eventually, becoming the first and only Western woman to be ordained in the Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan as a Buddhist nun.Emma founded the registered UK charity, ‘Opening Your Heart to Bhutan' in 2015. This has built medical and educational facilities to help special needs children in Bhutan. She was given a Tibetan name when she was ordained of Pema Deki which means blissfully happy lotus, which is perfect for herSome key points from our interview:· How when she was shown a photo of the man who held her hostage by the Police, she felt an overwhelming sense of compassion and sorrow for him· How she discovered she was very good at yoga and fell in love with it· How she had a pivotal moment on a visit to a temple in Bhutan and met a Lama (a spiritual teacher in Tibetan Buddhism), who would become her teacher· How she embraces parenthood as a huge spiritual teaching · How her practice has been about raising the value placed on kindness and compassion Find out more about Emma here https://www.emmaslade.com* * * *"Unbroken: Healing Through Storytelling" features individuals who have all triumphed after adversity and have not just bounced back in life, but forward and are now making a difference for others.Hosted by Madeleine Black, the show will share stories of all the amazing people Madeleine has met on her own journey as an author/speaker and these stories will heal, motivate, inspire and bring hope when they share their wisdom and knowledge with her.She really believes in the power that comes when we share our stories, that in fact we are not story tellers but story healers. From The Heart, a podcast about Yoga, Mindfulness, Healing and Wellbeing
In this episode Dawn Lister and Daniel Groom are joined by special guest Uma Dinsmore Tuli to discuss Yoga Nidra for community support, social justice and planetary healing. It's a great listen and designed to inspire us all. Uma was first introduced to yoga at the age of four by her mother and began meditating at nine on a pilgrimage with her maternal grandmother. Yoga and meditation have been part of her daily life ever since. As a naturally curious and enquiring yogini, she has engaged passionately and critically with a variety of quite different schools of yoga, most especially Satyananda Yoga and Iyengar Yoga. After completing the Yoga Biomedical Trust Diploma in Yoga Therapy in 1999, Uma has continued to find the fully integrated approach of yoga therapy to be the most practical route to the healing power of yoga. She further trained in Structural Yoga Therapy and Ayurvedic Yoga Therapy with Mukunda Stiles, and works as a yoga therapist with special expertise in women's health. Uma has a PhD in Communications and is a recognised teacher of the British Wheel of Yoga. She has been a training tutor in Yoga Therapy since 2001 and also teaches British Wheel of Yoga In-service training days. As a mother of three, she has been both personally and professionally engaged with the development of pregnancy yoga, yoga for birth and postnatal recovery, and family yoga, and has been training teachers in this field since 2002, when she first tutored for the Birthlight Trust. Since then she has delighted in creating her own courses to promote excellence of teaching in this field, including Well Woman Yoga and a uniquely responsive Integrated Mother and Baby yoga teacher training. With the intention of widening access to pregnancy and postnatal yoga, she founded Sitaram Yoga with her husband in 1998, and it continues to offer pregnancy and postantal yoga classes in London, including at King's College and St Thomas's hopsitals. The heart of Uma's daily personal and therapeutic practice is yoga nidra, which she believes to be the most powerfully transformative of all yoga techniques. She first encountered the technique at the Satyananda Yoga Centre in 1995, and has been exploring all aspects of it with fascination ever since. She has studied a variety of different approaches to the practice both in India and the UK, with nationally renowned exponents including Swami Muktidharma (Satyananda Acharya, New Zealand), Mukunda Stiles, and Richard Miller. She has refined a range of particularly feminine therapeutic applications of yoga nidra, including its use for the promotion of fertility, positive birthing, postnatal recovery and conscious menstrual health a source of spiritual empowerment. She has taught yoga nidra to hundreds of people, in every conceivable environment, from nursery schools, hospitals and airports, to giant geodesic domes filled with yogis sheltering from wild storms at yoga festivals and gatherings. She has been sharing the technique with teachers from all lineages on Yoga Therapy training courses and retreats since 1999. Uma leads retreats and courses worldwide, sharing the approach to yoga therapy set out in her CDs, DVDs and books: Mother's Breath, Teach Yourself Yoga for Pregnancy and Birth, and Feel Confident: Yoga for Living. Her latest book Yoni Shakti is about the evolution of feminine spiritual authority through yoga and tantra. Uma is currently refining Womb Yoga through a series of international workshops and retreats. https://yonishakti.co/ https://www.yoganidranetwork.org/ https://www.instagram.com/umadinsmoretuli/ *** From The Heart is a podcast about Yoga, Mindfulness, healing and wellbeing from Dawn Lister and Daniel Groom, founders of Anahata Yoga Centre, Leigh-on-Sea, Essex, UK. YOGA BUSINESS series Part 2 Clare- Jivamukti Yoga Bern.“Yoga business isn’t yoga”- David Life .We start our exploration with these wise words of my teacher and co founder of the Jivamukti Yoga method David Life. Yoga and business how do they go together and do they even go together? We live in a capitalist society, so in modern yoga, in this modern world we respond to that society in a capitalist way, but where is the bhakti in that? .This and a lot more is up for discussion with three amazing beings. Austin from Urban Sadhu in New Jersey, Clare from Jivamukti Yoga Bern and Nora from India. This second episode is with Clare, who is all BHAKTI, all HEART, all LOVE! We discuss YOGA as we see it, bhakti, the love for teaching and Clare’s view on yoga as a business and the relationship to money. Plus we discuss her journey in India and her book Mysore to the Mountains. LINK IN BIO! .“Sometimes when I am teaching I feel a deep love for the universe manifested in those practitioners I see before me. I am lucky that these “sometimes” are frequent. I love without judgement to evaluation. It feels like (here I am trying to describe the undescribable) a warm safe blanket, or the warm saline ocean. I feel held, and perfectly at peace.“ Clare Nicholls. About Clare: Since 2001 Clare has practiced asana and views the physical process as a way of undoing the habits we hold in our bodies and releasing the past to create space for the future. Clare began teaching in 2005 with a British Wheel of Yoga Diploma, in 2011 she qualified to teach Jivamukti Yoga, becoming advanced certified in 2017. In 2014 and 2015 Clare travelled around India, experiencing many sites of pilgrimage and integrating an understanding of the philosophies into her life, practice and teaching. She wrote a book about this experience called Mysore to the Mountains. From 2018 Clare was blessed to have the opportunity to move to Bern where she now teachers and mentors at Jivamukti Yoga Bern. .ENJOY! LISTEN! SHARE! LEAVE A REVIEW! Bijusi Rama Gopala indiešu dejas trupas dalībniece, aktīvi darbojusies starptautiskajā PEN klubā un Britu līgā Eiropas brīvībai (British League of European Freedom). Viena no organizācijas British Wheel of Yoga dibinātājām. 2004. gadā saņēmusi Pasaules Brīvo Latviešu apvienības Kultūras fonda balvu, 2007. gadā apbalvota ar Triju Zvaigžņu ordeni, pērn saņēmusi Latvijas Literatūras Mūža balvu.

Dr Rosy Daniel trained as a General Practitioner in Bristol. The illness of a close friend that was strongly influenced by the friend's emotional state led to her interest in the mind-body connection. In 1985 she joined the Bristol Cancer Help Centre where she studied complementary medicine and psychological and self-help approaches. Moved by the phenomenal self-healing journeys she witnessed at Bristol, she was inspired to write her first book Loving Medicine. Leading British physiotherapist Benoy Matthew warned yoga teachers against permanently damaging their hips because of intensive yoga practice. Recently, an increasing number of yoga teachers have been seeking treatment for serious hip problems. Most of them ask therapists for advice on how to modify yoga positions to avoid injuries. However, some have developed advanced hip problems that require treatment and surgery. According to Matthew, these problems happen when people frequently do yoga poses that are difficult for their body structure. Because people have different body types, not all yoga positions are suitable for everyone. Yoga teachers run the risk of developing hip problems as the demand for yoga classes increases. One instructor said that the high demands are causing some teachers to burden their bodies with heavy workloads. Some instructors even have to teach five times a day, while some hold classes even on weekends. Matthew said that because instructors do yoga quite often, they tend to disregard other forms of exercise like cardio or cross-training. He suggested adding a variety of exercises to lower their injury risk. In addition to this, Matthew also recommended that new yoga teachers undergo physical assessment. This will give them awareness of their body type and help them identify what types of yoga positions are appropriate for them. Pip White, another physiotherapist, emphasized the importance of understanding personal limitations to practice yoga safely and fully enjoy its benefits. UK yoga practitioners may seek help from the British Wheel of Yoga, which governs yoga groups in England. The organization offers programs that include anatomy lessons that can help students and teachers modify yoga positions.

About Juliet Juliet is a mother of 2 beautiful children and teaches alignment based Hatha Yoga from her home studio in South Norwood as well as working with other venues across London. Juliet trained under the highly acclaimed Triyoga teacher training programme with leading teachers Anna Ashby and Joey Miles, she is also a member of the British Wheel of Yoga and Yoga Alliance and has been practicing for over a decade. Juliet was first drawn to yoga amidst a challenging time in her life, magnified by a stressful city commute, long hours, and a demanding job all of which resulted in burnout. At that time she began a regular yoga practice and soon found herself experiencing its many therapeutic benefits, she slept better, could breathe better, moved better, and it created the space she needed to understand myself better. Yoga continues to be my anchor, especially since becoming a mother, and these feelings of space, freedom and clarity gained from my practice are qualities which I endeavour to facilitate for my students. Juliet is also a trained Pilates studio equipment teacher with the Polestar method and work from The Loft in Wandsworth. Episode highlights Juliet's yoga business where she teaches Hatha Yoga and Restorative Yoga What led Juliet to her yoga practice after corporate life in the City Juliet's journey into motherhood and her pre-motherhood expectations, as against the reality of motherhood Juliet's postpartum including lack of sleep as her baby didn't sleep well, Juliet was not eating well and she suffered postpartum anxiety Not identifying with who she was as a mother Shavasahna position - lying flat on her mat - was key to Juliet's recovery - we discuss why this was. Taking time to rest is not on anyone's list. There is always something to do. The dangerous self-talk of "shoulds* Juliet's work with a sleep trainer (Carol Mae consulting). Key was she nurtured Juliet as well as her baby. She told her she was doing an amazing job. The huge step of asking for help Second time round Juliet considered the support she needed but anxiety still there at times but finding ways to manage it. Changing expectations Juliet’s Yoga teacher said after this you will be stronger than you ever were. Meeting her self head on......and now stronger than ever before. Physically, mentally and emotionally stronger. Vulnerability in meeting herself. Strength has really come from inside. Juliet said: "I would never have been able to get there if I hadn't first let go and allowed myself those moments of rest and spaciousness and time to simply be with exactly who I was" Grounding and root chakra and drawing energy up. Parasympathetic nervous system. Rest as a necessity not a luxury. Allowing our bodies to process the birth to reflect on what has happened and is happening. Try to commit to rest. Even just 5 minutes. Benefits of conscious breath work. There will always be something we ought to be doing or think we should be doing. We are all doing best we can and forgiving ourselves Relevant links Julia’s website and Instagram Carol Mae’s website Disclaimer The information and reference guides in this podcast are intended solely for the general information for the reader/listener. This podcast is the fourth audio extract from a mindfulness and meditation workshop I delivered for a group of British Wheel of Yoga teachers in March 2019.Here are the highlights of what's covered:A quick recap of some mindfulness basics from the previous yoga workshop podcasts.Yoga teachers are taking responsibility for student's awareness - by guiding their awareness to the breath and bodily sensations. So yoga teachers help people to let go of being lost in thought! Yoga teachers are teaching mindfulness. The ego is related to being lost in thought. When we're lost in thought - the ego has taken over. The ego is the sum total of all our attachments. It's good to be aware of what we're attached to.Meditation is "training the mind to achieve higher states of consciousness".Meditation trains the mind to be less lost in thought - to be more aware and concentrated.Beyond this, meditation can help you connect spiritually.Meditation is setting the conditions up to train ourselves to be more mindful. In yoga, the meditation is there to get us into a state of union. Most people that I've worked with who have tried meditation have found it to be beneficial: more mindful, kinder, understanding, relaxed, calmer etc.A small percentage of people are not ready for meditation.A sitting meditation posture needs a balance of being both relaxed and alert...If we get too relaxed, we drift off into a dream. If we're overly alert we can become anxious.A relaxed and alert posture will also make the mind relaxed and alert.Having a straight posture/back is helpful. We're trying to find the sweet spot between being relaxed and alert. This also applies outside of meditation. It helps you stay mindful. The podcast contains advice on how to meditate sitting on a chair. If you're sat on the floor - give the knees some support with cushions if they're off the floor - or elevate the hips. It's good for the body to do a little work whilst we're meditating. For example, if the abdominals or back muscles are engaged a little.Relax the shoulders.Have the head balanced as though you imagine your chin is on a shelf. It helps to reflect on your meditation practice, keep a journal or discuss meditation with others.I had a good sharing discussion with the group members on their meditation experience - you'll hear this in the podcast. The five hindrancesUseful list for meditation and mindfulness1. Sensory desire/craving2. Ill will3. Sloth & torpor4. Restlessness & worry5. DoubtI discussed the antidotes to each of these hindrances in the podcastGood to investigate constant themes in meditation that are hindering your practice. E.g. talking to a friend, seeing a therapist. It can be helpful when there are minor disturbances in meditation e.g. a little background noise and a few distractions. The biggest disturbance is internal not external! It's our ego and being lost in thought!Integrating meditation into yoga classes tipsAsk yourself “why” you want to integrate meditation.Be considerate of people’s expectations.Meet people where they are.Teach from a place of confidence and personal practice.Guidance versus silence.Keep it simple.Option – Create a separate meditation class.Consider referencing meditation on any advertisements for classes - being transparent about your intentions.Consider using chairs for seated meditation.Consider integrating walking meditation as this is a better option for some people who are unable to sit still. Some people may not be ready for meditation, instead it may be better for them to start by slowing down or spending time relaxing first. And then moving onto meditation later. Music can be helpful to relax students ahead of meditation.5 to 10 minutes of meditation is enough for people who are starting out. Possibly using guided meditation on an app like Insight Timer.Having occasional breaks from meditation can be helpful. For most of us, we'll find that our life experience will degrade temporarily on the days when we aren't meditating - and this motivates us to have a continuous practice.Meditation and mindfulness practice is similar to exercise. If you stop, you tend to degrade. So it's good to keep going with it.Copyright © 2019 Darren Cockburn. This podcast is the third audio extract from a workshop I delivered for a group of British Wheel of Yoga teachers in March 2019. Here are the highlights of what's covered: The definition of Yoga as being in union with the divine, spirit or God. How being lost in thought separates us from this connection and union. And how mindfulness enables the union. We can only achieve Yoga when we're mindful. This union is available at any time. The challenge is being able to maintain it. Enlightenment or awakening means that the state of Yoga or connection with spirit is there permanently - you never get lost in thought. In the meantime, we're mindful sometimes and lost in thought at other times. This can happen many times during the day. At any point in time, we're lost in thought or present. If we're mindful and spiritually open or receptive, we can allow the transcendental love and wisdom to flow through us. Three levels of mindfulness Level 0 - Being lost in thought Level 1 - Mindfulness Level 2 - Mindfulness+ . Mindfulness with openness to spirit - allowing spirit to flow through you. We are always in one of these three states - and this goes for Yoga students too. Keeping some awareness on the breath (even just 10%) - keeps us mindful. We can be mindfully busy although it can be more challenging. If we lose our connection with mindfulness we can slow down as a tactic. Benefits of mindfulness Improved concentration and memory More positive Reduces stress and anxiety Quieter mind More acceptance of yourself, others and situations Helps relieve stress and depression Improves sleep quality Increase in resilience to health issues Enables kindness Useful for pain management Enhances happiness and wellbeing Can enjoy pleasure more when you're mindful Creativity Problem solving Creates better relationships Better listening Self control Access to the spiritual dimension Mindfulness+ or yoga is about bringing together the form with the formless. To work with our experience and what's external to us. Enjoying all of that and meeting our obligations, whilst integrating the spiritual dimension. Today I’m talking with Peter Blackaby who is the author of the book Intelligent Yoga which he is currently writing the 2nd edition for. Pete started practicing yoga in 1978 and began teaching in 1986. He then went on to become an osteopath. In 2002 he became involved in the British Wheel of Yoga (which is the governing body in England), and ran a two-year teacher training program for them. Since then, Pete has been running courses for teachers and teaches functional anatomy and biomechanics in the UK and internationally. His interest in the last 15 years has been to put some scientific underpinning to the practice of yoga, both in the biomechanical sense and in the mind/body relationship. In today’s conversation we’re talking about moving away from the Western reductionist view of anatomy, what a bottom up approach to yoga looks like vs. a top down approach, how the whole person’s lived experience is tied into how they move, and how yoga teachers can approach working with students who have chronic pain.
Stephen Sturgess is a London based yoga and meditation teacher, and the author of The Yoga Book, a recommended text of the British Wheel of Yoga. Since 1969 Stephen has studied and practised yoga and meditation in India and UK under the expertise of well- known gurus. Practised authentically, yoga provides us with a starting point for meditation, which awakens us to our oneness with true reality. This book demonstrates how to use a wide range of yoga postures, purification practices, breathing exercises and meditation practices as a portal to a higher consciousness – with all the everyday benefits implied in that phrase: an enhanced sense of peace, love, joy, happiness, harmony and personal fulfillment. Drawing upon the tradition of Kriya Yoga – the goal of which is to attune one’s individual consciousness with the Divine, or Universal, Consciousness – Stephen Sturgess shows us how to progress beyond the supple body to the vital, contented mind.
Prescriptions for yoga and harnessing the power of social interaction. This edition has been funded by a grant from the Scottish Government. We hear about two very different ways of giving people in pain the knowledge and power to help themselves. Will we soon be able to get a prescription of yoga on the NHS? Christine Johnson speaks to yoga teacher Anna Semlyen about a study that shows yoga can be an effective and cost-effective treatment for chronic low back pain. Semlyen, who helped design the programme used by the research trial, recalls how she has seen people get back into gardening or extreme sports after taking up yoga. The research study found a similar effect among the group of patients using yoga: reduced levels of disability and fewer days off work compared to the control group. Not only is this a low-tech and cheap treatment, but it’s also empowering, argues Semlyen, as it lets people ‘be their own healers’. ‘How are you?’ Three little words often dreaded by people in pain. Gareth Parsons explains to Paul Evans why these simple social rituals can be so difficult for people in pain and how social interactions can instead be made empowering. Parsons’ work on participatory action research gets people in pain together to recognise the negative attitudes or oppression experienced in daily life and find ways to help themselves. The real experts on pain are not the clinicians of researchers, but the people who live with it every day, he argues.
