Laura Hirch is a filmmaker, writer, artist and a scholar of matriarchal studies.  Her six-part documentary, From The Goddess, explores the concept of the Great Goddess and how matriarchal societies, centered around Goddess worship, thrived in peaceful coexistence for millennia until the emergence of Patriarchy 6,000 years ago.  We discuss her series and other aspects of matriarchal herstory along with our own matriarchal scholar and inspiration, Vicki Noble. Sean Marlon Newcombe and Dawn "Sam" Alden co-host.Support the MMGA podcast on Patreon here: https://www.patreon.com/34Circe

In this episode, I was both privileged to sit with, and deeply inspired by, my guest, Uma Dinsmore-Tuli, PhD. Uma is the author of Yoni Shakti, as well as many other books, and her work, along with Vicki Noble's, set something alight in me. As I read her book, I saw written in plain and clear language what my body-heart-mind had always known: there is a feminine source-point for yoga that is the key or code to understanding the truth of the practice. Uma helps me to unpack this awareness, and she and I cover many topics that are challenging but, hopefully, ultimately liberating. We do touch on some sensitive subjects, so be prepared for a big conversation. In this episode, we talk about: How yoga has changed since Uma met (and fell in love with!) yoga in the 60s The abuse of power within largely patriarchal, commercially-driven yoga lineages The "yoga industrial complex" Why Uma no longer refers to herself as a yoga teacher How women can meet yoga as cyclical beings (menstruation, pregnancy, postpartum, menopause), and how we can all get more out of our yoga practice (hint: it involves more rest!) The natural siddhis and altered states of the feminine experience and how yoga seeks to emulate them The exploitation of yoga teachers in the current, unsustainable studio-based business model Yoga Nidra beyond its commercial trademarks - as a practice that is perhaps as old as humanity and found (in some form) across multiple indigenous cultures Uma's new book, Nidra Shakti, and her process of writing and researching How Uma's Celtic roots manifest in her yoga practice How Uma developed Womb Yoga The importance of education and community (sangha) in breaking through the barriers to collective healing and empowerment And so much more...!! Throughout this episode, Uma advocates for a holistic, inclusive, therapeutic approach to yoga that honours the body's natural cycles and supports collective healing. This podcast provides an in-depth exploration of yoga's commercialisation, the importance of reclaiming indigenous and feminine cyclical wisdom, and the empowerment of women through respectful and individualised yoga practices (and a lot more rest!). I cannot wait to share Uma's body of wisdom with you!   About Uma Dinsmore-Tuli: Uma Dinsmore-Tuli inspires tired humans to restore rhythmic cycles of health through rest. She shares simple tools and yoga therapeutic techniques to recover health and reconnect to embodied wisdom. Uma met yoga in 1969, at the age of four, and fell in love. She's been practising ever since, and teaching yoga since 1994. A yoga therapist with special expertise in yoga therapy for women's health, Uma identifies her teachings as “post-lineage” yoga, rooted in yoga tantra and drawing on a variety of yogic traditions to share deeply nourishing and enlivening practices appropriate for contemporary life. Uma works internationally, sharing yoga retreats, trainings, and empowerments that support the natural arising of prana shakti: the power of life. She trains specialist teachers in Total Yoga Nidra and Yoni Shakti Well Woman Yoga Therapy for menstrual and menopausal health, pregnancy, birth, and postnatal recovery. Uma is also the author of six books: Nidra Shakti: The Power of Rest: An Illustrated Encyclopaedia of Yoga Nidra (due for release July 2023) Yoni Shakti: A Woman's Guide to Power and Freedom through Yoga and Tantra (2014/2020) Yoga Nidra Made Easy (2022) The Celtic School of Yoga (2016) Yoga for Pregnancy and Birth (2010) Mother's Breath (2005) Uma is also Co-Founder of Yoga Nidra Network (2011) and the mother of three children. Her practice and teaching respect the cyclical powers of the living earth and honour human life cycles as spiritual initiations (including menarche, conscious menstruation, menopause, birth, and postnatal recovery). On the latest episode I'm joined by Dr. Annalisa Derr, a goddess educator, Sacred Feminine embodiment teacher, and ritual theatre creatrix. Annalisa completed her doctorate in Mythological Studies with Emphasis in Depth Psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute. She also holds a BA in Theater with specialized training in masked and physical theater from international master teachers in Italy, India, and NYC. Annalisa's work explores the impact that negative cultural menstrual “myths” have on women, which her forthcoming book will explore in more detail. Annalisa offers an affirming alternative in the form of an ancient myth, “The Descent of Inanna,” which she re-visions as a sacred menstrual narrative and ritual rite-of-passage.During this episode we discuss: Annalisa's experience growing up in a Lutheran church, including the connection she made later between devotional Christian hymns and the Bhakti yoga traditionThe near total erasure of the Sacred Feminine in Protestantism, and why discovering Her can feel like such a revelation for many of usHow discovering Mary Magdalene sparked Annalisa's ongoing journey to the Goddess and led her to her current researchWhat Annalisa refers to as the menstrual mysteries, and how the Inanna myth teaches us about them and the nature of the Goddess Herself - as a gateway through the lessons of birth, death, and rebirthAnnalisa's pending move to Greece and her vision for supporting the reemergence of the Sacred Feminine in patriarchal strongholds And a bonus - Annalisa becomes the third guest in the history of the show to bring me to tears (in a really good way)! The first installment in our series on the birth of the historical women called "Amazons." Who were their ancestors? Where did they come from? We talk about the destruction of the Old Europe matriarchy by the warrior men from the Eurasian steppes and how it was the spark that produced the matriarchal resistance movement of the Amazons. The concept of an "Amazon" begins to develop as the millennia pass and the descendants of the Old Europe matriarchies are forced to take up arms to protect their people and culture. Vicki Noble leads the way and shares her extensive knowledge of the era. Join us as we celebrate the history and relevance of International Women's Day (IWD).  From it's inception as an outgrowth of socialist labor movements in the early 20th Century to it's modern incarnation as a global day of awareness of the struggles of women, International Women's Day has provided an annual opportunity to focus on female empowerment.  We will touch upon the United States Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) and whether this could be the year that American women will have their equal rights enshrined in the US Constitution.  Also, we will talk about this year's UN theme for IWD: "DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality."  Women have made many historical contributions to technological development in culture and we will focus on a few of them including those of Ada Lovelace, the mother of modern computing. Vicki Noble, Dawn "Sam" Alden and Sean Marlon Newcombe discuss.

After a series of psychic and spontaneous healing events in the late 1970s, Noble co-created, with Karen Vogel, the round feminist Motherpeace tarot cards revising both divination and world history to include women and people of color. In 2017, the fashion company Christian Dior licensed the Motherpeace images for a special clothing line, sending their matriarchal values out to all the urban centers of the world. In the late 1980s, Vicki Noble founded and directed the Motherpeace Institute in California, and published an award-winning quarterly journal, SnakePower: A Journal of Ancient and Contemporary Female Shamanism. For decades she has traveled and taught internationally, and leading pilgrimage groups to sacred Goddess sites around the world; her books are translated and published in numerous languages. Her intensive teaching in Italy for more than a decade has led to a dedicated group of Italian feminist women practicing and passing on her teachings. She is retired from teaching as a graduate professor in the Women's Spirituality Masters Programs at CIIS, New College in San Francisco, and finally at Sofia University in Palo Alto (formerly called ITP). She has been a professional astrologer and healer, and for two decades has adapted Tibetan Buddhist Dakini practices for her Goddess students. Currently she holds private intensives and Motherpeace Certifications in Santa Cruz, where she lives near her family and close to the Pacific Ocean, gardening, walking, and watching whales. In this episode, you'll discover:Reflections on the overarching respect of celebrity and youth culture in the U.S. and subsequent lack of valuing our elders in our culture, and how that differs from indigenous cultures throughout history and today.  Plus, ideas on how that greatly impacts women, and especially older women, going through menopause and beyond. The origins of Vicki's work and co-creations of the Motherpeace tarot deck and her book Shakti Woman, how the tarot community reacted to the deck at the time of its creation, and how the work holds up and is still relevant today.Reflections on our move into patriarchy as a society, and how that took us away from living as sacred, living collectively, living sustainably, and experiencing life from a female-centered, peaceful way of living.Ideas around separating the patriarchy from masculinity, and the complexities and process of this journey as women living within the patriarchy interested in healing with the masculine in our own lives.Reclaiming women's spirituality in our culture, and how it is also a call for structured practices and commitment. And so much more… Follow along with Vicki on IG @vickinobleone here.Explore Vicki's books, the Motherpeace tarot deck, and other offerings here.Join Creative Woman Set Free, Alexandra's new 6-week masterclass and group portal here.

Often, the development of agriculture is seen as the "end of eden" for human existence-- but is this the case? Join us as we discuss how matriarchy and agriculture went hand-in-hand and how these same cultures also developed touching ancestor rituals around the preservation of skulls.

In what is sure to be a classic set of recordings, Vicki Noble joins Sean Marlon Newcombe and Dawn "Sam" Alden to discuss the matriarchal roots of Western Civilization. "Old Europe" is the term given to a set of advanced cultures that lasted for thousands of years west of the Black Sea. The topic so controversial, mainstream scholarship often refuses to address it. Vicki's knowledge and detail of this history (or "herstory") is not to be missed.

What was the culture like of the Old Europe matriarchies? Exquisite artwork and beautiful textiles, these were advanced civilizations-- belying the old tropes of "primitive" matriarchies. Yes, it is possible to have peace and advancement. We've had it before, but forgotten it. These civilizations provide a model of hope for what our culture can become again.

Scholars often throw roses at the feet of the Indo-European conquerors known as "Yamnaya." Even questioning their brutality is considered deceitful and offensive by some. Still these men destroyed the beautiful matriarchies of Old Europe and did so unsparingly: crushing the men and abducting the women. Was this invasion the beginning of war or are the Yamnaya unfairly blamed for behavior that was already common and normal? Join us as we explore the end of matriarchy and the conquest of the patriarchs.

Welcome to this seventh episode of Dior Talks. This podcast series will explore the connections between Creative Director of Women’s collections Maria Grazia Chiuri and contemporary women artists and curators.  In this episode, series host Katy Hessel, a London-based curator, writer and art historian, speaks to Vicki Noble, the iconic and trailblazing proponent of shamanic feminism, the Goddess Movement and the second-wave feminism of the 1970s. For the Dior Cruise 2018 collection, Maria Grazia Chiuri was inspired to collaborate with Noble on an exquisite and mystical series of clothing, accessories and jewelry based on the groundbreaking Motherpeace Tarot cards which she created with Karen Vogel in Berkeley, California in the 1970s. The captivating results were subsequently debuted in a selection of dedicated pop-up stores around the world that had been specially decorated with paintings and hangings featuring arcana from the deck such as ‘The Wheel of Fortune’, ‘The High Priestess’ and ‘The Sun’. Vicki Noble was born in Iowa in 1947 but moved to Berkeley, then the epicenter of the hippy and feminist movements, in 1976, where she met her future collaborator Vogel. Together they created the Motherpeace Tarot deck of cards after being inspired by the contemporary Goddess Movement and the vibrant, radical feminism of the era. In this critical period of feminist development, visual art was extremely important and Noble was a crucial figure in the drive to weave links between the new progressive politics, the occult, mysticism and creativity. In this new episode of Dior Talks we speak to Noble about her extraordinary, surprising and avant-garde career, and about the famous deck of cards which has never been out of production since it was created over four decades ago and which has inspired generations of feminists worldwide. Is there any truth to claim that the mother daughter relationship is more fraught than any other dynamic? Psychologist Professor Terri Apter explains how conflict can help mothers and daughters renew their bond. Mother and daughter team Sally and Sarah Kettle advocate shared experience as a way to strengthen family ties, something they found while rowing across the Atlantic together for four months, and comedian Sindhu Vee talks about the unique features of a mother's expectations. We also hear how, despite the best of intentions, many mothers can disempower their daughters in order to thrive in a patriarchy. Author and women's rights activist Elif Shafak warns about the ways daughters are taught to blend in, especially in cultures which are more gendered. Dr Leyla Hussein has had first-hand experience of female genital mutilation, and explains how women have become the foot soldiers of a patriarchal system that promotes such practises. Writer and matriarchy scholar Vicki Noble describes how the mother daughter dynamic is different in societies where women wield power, and life coach Kasia Urbaniak, who teaches women the foundations of power and influence, explains what a mother can do to empower her daughter. Learn how love and curiosity can be more powerful teachers than fear, how essence is about embracing all of life (shadows and the light), and how we can learn to love and respect ourselves by making the choice to no longer abandon ourselves in this interview with HeatherAsh Amara. How do you introduce a teacher who taught you to love and respect yourself? HeatherAsh Amara would say that you name the feeling you're experiencing so you can claim it in awareness. What I feel is love and gratitude for my teacher HeatherAsh. As I'm writing this (as is often the case when I tell others about her) I have crocodile tears welling up in my eyes. You should know, however, that she's not the kind of teacher that stays on a pedestal. Nope. If you put her there, she'll jump off it so she can be on the ground looking you squarely in the eyes. Her first name is a combination of her birth name, Heather, and her nickname for many years, Ash. Ash came along when she first starting facilitating fire walks, and reminds her of the energy of the phoenix rising from the ashes, and the power all of us have to transform from the inside out. She began her training with female spiritual teachers Vicki Noble, Cerridwen Fallingstar, and Peggy Dylan who taught her about the ancestral wisdom of women's intuition, healing, intimacy, vulnerability among women, aligning with the cycles of the seasons, ritual, and the infinite possibility inherent in all of us. A powerful life-long mentor then appeared to her in a dream…Don Miguel Ruiz of The Four Agreements, and she started down the path that would lead to becoming a powerful agent of transformation for thousands of women with her Warrior Goddess Training book and teachings. If you want to see us talking, you can watch the interview on Vimeo. More About HeatherAsh A leader in mindfulness and empowerment, HeatherAsh Amara is the author of the bestselling book Warrior Goddess Training, Become the Woman You are Meant to be and the new-release Warrior Goddess Way, Claiming the Woman you are Destined to be. The heart of Amara's teachings stems from her long Toltec apprenticeship and teaching partnership with Don Miguel Ruiz, author of The Four Agreements. After studying under Ruiz, in 2001 Amara founded Toci – The Toltec Center of Creative Intent, a non-denominational religious organization based in the wisdom of the Toltec and The Four Agreements. Over the past fifteen years she has taught workshops and apprenticeships and trained teachers. She now travels the world working with women to integrate the feminine wisdom of the ancients into their modern lives. Since the publication of Warrior Goddess Training in September of 2014, sales of this series have exceeded 100,000 copies and the books have been translated into 15 different languages. The worldwide movement for Warrior Goddess Training has grown to include a robust, highly-engaged Facebook page with over 460,000 fans, an email list nearing 100,000, and numerous book discussion groups around the country.
