The very next year, Stephen Evans & the True Grits released their first LP "Something to Bleed". Inspired to release more music, they followed two years later with their EP "Under the Bridge." Both records have received local and regional praise for their passion and creativity. Stephen's strong melodic songwriting style is a blend of vivid imagery, darkness, and hopeful optimism. There's no denying the feeling that shines through with his evocative vocals and lyrics. Songs like ‘Ghost Among the Trees', 'The Garden', 'Cherokee Hills', 'Shining Star', and '1000 Roses' are beacons of his folk rock song craft. With radio play on Western North Carolina radio stations, as well as shows around the region, Stephen Evans & the True Grits are becoming a local favorite. "Buzz of Bees" is their latest album, released in December of 2022, of folk rock with some songs dipping their toes into other styles like Americana, Latin Folk, and Vaudeville. Singles from the LP, ‘Ghost Among the Trees', ‘Winning the Day', and ‘Estefania', are already receiving radio play on local stations as well as national online radio and music podcasts. Look for Stephen Evans & the True Grits playing fun live shows all around the area to support this beautiful album. Emerging Manchester indie up and comer Jack Hyphen returns with the vibrant, breezy new single ‘Not Medicinal' (June 28th). Having made a name for himself as one to watch with live shows in and around Manchester, Jack Hyphen continues to showcase the intricate songwriting and radiant musicianship which has seen him build a fanbase. Emerging from the breakup of Herefordshire Indie/Rock band Point Zero, where he served as the frontman, Jack returned with acoustic singles that showcased his vocal and lyrical prowess. His evolution into a 4-piece alternative pop/rock outfit in mid-2019 brought a punchy, atmospheric edge to his music. The new single ‘Not Medicinal' continues this approach with intricate interweaving guitar lines, smothered in atmospheric modulation and reverb which glides over the punching drums and driving bass. Topped with Jack's emotive, understated vocal delivery, the track blends its energetic undercurrent with an ethereal edge to create a unique, accessible yet thoughtful and delicate soundscape. Having already gained widespread press support and radio play from the likes of Amazing Radio and XS Manchester, Jack has opened for a number of breakout bands including Crystal Tides, Jeremiah Ferrari, and James Walsh (Starsailor), even gaining acclaim from BBC Radio 6 Music's Chris Hawkins for the quality of his live performance. Jack continues to grow, showcasing some of his finest work yet on the new single ‘Not Medicinal'.
On this episode of the XS Long Player we welcome the gravel voiced Ben Ottewell onto the podcast to talk about Gomez's 1998 debut 'Bring It On'. This conversation with Ben about the making of the album is a great reminder what a brilliant collection of songs the album is, how original and different it felt at the time of release and how meteoric the rise of the band was in the late 90s - not least winning the Mercury Music Prize over The Verve and Massive Attack. Plus, as a bonus, Saul also answers some questions about the bands brand new album ‘Yummy' as submitted by XS Manchester listeners. Alex O'aiza is a Mexican-American indie artist from Dallas, Texas with a sound that mixes snappy pop hooks with gritty rock riffs and the rolling beats of Alternative RnB, and songs that are led by poetic lyrics exploring the Gen Z experience in a fast-changing world. Releasing a string of buzzy singles in 2019 led to press acclaim, local and college radio support and a label deal with Saint In The City Records at the start of 2020. Armed with a batch of hook-driven and genre-blurring new songs recorded with producers Caleb Turman and Austin Bello from celebrated pop-punk band Forever The Sickest Kids, O'aiza released new singles throughout the year and dropped his debut EP, Out Of My Mind, in August. The EP garnered widespread independent playlist support and radio airplay. In specific the title track was soon playlisted on KXT Texas, Idobi Radio, Alt 103.7 FM and XS Manchester radio. Out Of My Mind was also featured by tastemakers at Alt Press, XS Noize, Central Track and Stereoboard, who all praised O'aiza's combo of super-catchy pop hooks and indie-electro beats. O'aiza returned on 2021 with two stellar singles Runnin' 2 Death and How Your Love Feels where he showcased a more confident rock sound that was immediately featured on Spotify's All New Rock playlist. Alex is set to come back with bigger and bolder records than ever before, as he further pushes the boundaries of his artistry. https://lnk.bio/alexoaizamusic/?fbclid=PAAaaBgIZWXPmLyUcbTsrwYwJXoXg099FMqQXgarhbxDeQcHwX7_99htKzWAY www.alexoaiza.com --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/grayson-mask/support
modernlove release their highly anticipated third EP Nightlife on March 24th. The EP features their recent singles ‘until my heart stops beating', ‘Ruin Your Night', ‘Take Me Far Away' and ‘Only Ever Only You' as well as two previously unreleased songs in the shape of the title track ‘Nightlife' and ‘Solipsis'. Previous single ‘Only Ever Only You' received airplay support from Radio 1's Jack Saunders and Gemma Bradley, XS Manchester (evening show / RotW), BBC Radio Ulster (ATL show) and Q Radio group in N. Ireland amongst others. The band is currently finishing their debut North American tour (which also included SXSW) and saw sold out venues in New York, Chicago, LA and Philadelphia, showing the band's recent releases have made a global impact. Inspired by the band's own experiences, the ‘NIGHTLIFE' EP paints a picture of young people's lives: the highs and the lows, the triumphs and insecurities that come with partying, drinking too much and falling in-and-out of love. All six songs were written by modernlove. - Barry Lally (vocalist/guitar), Graham Fagen (guitar), Daniel Rooney (bass), and Cian McCluskey (drums) and were co-produced by the band alongside Tom Leach (Lewis Capaldi, Years & Years) and Adam Redmond. The EP follows the recent release of the band's first ever vinyl, the limited edition compilation ‘So Far'. Their debut UK headline tour late last year sold-out months in advance, while very limited tickets remain for next month's UK tour, which will see them play their biggest headline show to date at London's Lafayette.

What’s life without music? Clint Boon has been keeping the spirit of Mancunian music alive for years, and the self proclaimed “creative hurricane” is showing no signs of slowing down. See Clint Boon's We Built This City Playlist here: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0YW3lVDOWrE0QZlV6XjEtF?si=Fc0V4R3WS7exqvNdEkGZkg We Built This City is a series of incredible conversations with the incredible Mancunians - born, bred or adopted – who put the heart into Modern Manchester. We recorded this episode before the Corona Virus outbreak, which has for the time-being, not only taken the swagger out of Manchester, but brought us to our knees. Not for long. We had always planned to launch in March and wondered if that was still the right thing to do now. On reflection, we decided to go ahead, because the love and the family and the community that comes out of these conversations, will hopefully provide some strength and conviction that we did build this city - and we will do it again. _ _ _ _ _ Clint’s life-long dream was to be in a band, playing music for his fans – ever since he first saw Elvis Presley on the TV. And whilst he achieved his goal, he knew that it couldn’t last forever. When the Inspiral Carpets went their separate ways, Clint needed to find a new way to bring that ‘buzz’ back into his life. Lisa hears how Clint’s love of entertaining manifested in many ways throughout his life – as a DJ in Manchester’s South nightclub, a radio presenter on XS Manchester, and a public speaker, inspiring our City’s future great musicians. A story of celebration and reinvention, Clint helps us to remember the importance of familial love and most importantly, staying unique. _ _ _ _ _ Your host, Lisa Morton, started PR company Roland Dransfield in 1996, one month after the fateful IRA bomb that tore apart the city centre. From that point, the business, and its team members, have been involved in helping to support the creation of Modern Manchester – across regeneration, business, charity, leisure and hospitality, sport and culture. To celebrate the 24 years that Roland Dransfield has spent creating these bonds, Lisa is gathering together some of her Mancunian ‘family’ and will be exploring how they have created their own purposeful relationships with the best city in the world.
