Despite being an often-overlooked topic in music, motherhood has come up in several of my interviews, & has served as inspiration for several albums. Though I'm not a mother myself, these women's diverse stories have been so inspiring to me - they challenge tropes of motherhood, & get honest about its high & lows. It's been a busy spring for Julien Baker: she just released a collaborative album with Torres, ‘Send A Prayer My Way', played Coachella with boygenius, & announced her relationship with bandmate Lucy Dacus. Given all that, it seemed like a great time to re-issue my conversation with her from back in 2021. We talked about her last solo record, ‘Little Oblivions', OCD, addiction & relapse, spirituality, & tons more. Her honesty throughout this conversation is why it remains one of my favourite interviews I've done, & one that has also resonated with a lot of you. The writing process of ‘Two Lives' began right as Kelly Zutrau, aka Wet, discovered that she was pregnant. As she processed the news, she let her subconscious to the talking, not filtering or polishing the words she found herself singing. Because of this, ‘Two Lives' is an incredibly cerebral, raw record that demands to be felt, not just heard. With her third album, 'A Complicated Woman', coming out next month, I wanted to revisit my first interview with Self Esteem from 2020. It was pretty clear from the get-go that she was going to bulldoze the rules of pop, & she has - her unfiltered lyrics about female pleasure, queerness, heartbreak & more have garnered her a large & loyal fanbase, both in the UK & internationally. She has also been nominated for a Mercury Prize, appeared as a guest judge on RuPaul's Drag Race UK, & has starred in the West End production of Cabaret. The very next year, Stephen Evans & the True Grits released their first LP "Something to Bleed". Inspired to release more music, they followed two years later with their EP "Under the Bridge." Both records have received local and regional praise for their passion and creativity. Stephen's strong melodic songwriting style is a blend of vivid imagery, darkness, and hopeful optimism. There's no denying the feeling that shines through with his evocative vocals and lyrics. Songs like ‘Ghost Among the Trees', 'The Garden', 'Cherokee Hills', 'Shining Star', and '1000 Roses' are beacons of his folk rock song craft. With radio play on Western North Carolina radio stations, as well as shows around the region, Stephen Evans & the True Grits are becoming a local favorite. "Buzz of Bees" is their latest album, released in December of 2022, of folk rock with some songs dipping their toes into other styles like Americana, Latin Folk, and Vaudeville. Singles from the LP, ‘Ghost Among the Trees', ‘Winning the Day', and ‘Estefania', are already receiving radio play on local stations as well as national online radio and music podcasts. Look for Stephen Evans & the True Grits playing fun live shows all around the area to support this beautiful album. Emerging Manchester indie up and comer Jack Hyphen returns with the vibrant, breezy new single ‘Not Medicinal' (June 28th). Having made a name for himself as one to watch with live shows in and around Manchester, Jack Hyphen continues to showcase the intricate songwriting and radiant musicianship which has seen him build a fanbase. Emerging from the breakup of Herefordshire Indie/Rock band Point Zero, where he served as the frontman, Jack returned with acoustic singles that showcased his vocal and lyrical prowess. His evolution into a 4-piece alternative pop/rock outfit in mid-2019 brought a punchy, atmospheric edge to his music. The new single ‘Not Medicinal' continues this approach with intricate interweaving guitar lines, smothered in atmospheric modulation and reverb which glides over the punching drums and driving bass. Topped with Jack's emotive, understated vocal delivery, the track blends its energetic undercurrent with an ethereal edge to create a unique, accessible yet thoughtful and delicate soundscape. Having already gained widespread press support and radio play from the likes of Amazing Radio and XS Manchester, Jack has opened for a number of breakout bands including Crystal Tides, Jeremiah Ferrari, and James Walsh (Starsailor), even gaining acclaim from BBC Radio 6 Music's Chris Hawkins for the quality of his live performance. Jack continues to grow, showcasing some of his finest work yet on the new single ‘Not Medicinal'.

This is a special one-off episode where I've invited revolutionary singing teachers Lisa Paglin and Marianna Brilla back on the show (listen to Episode 58 first), to give advice to singers with vocal problems. Emma and Ann try all year round to keep the guests diverse, interesting and brilliant, but Pride Month is always an extra special occasion - this June, we hear from vocalist, guitarist, bassist, songwriter and merch-packager Pamela Connolly of Choice Prize nominated Dublin band Pillow Queens. The trio cover in one jam-packed hour the importance of queer representation in mainstream music, the difficulties faced by musicians in balancing a public persona with the tough reality of trying to earn a living from music alone, and how listening to Jack Johnson can cause massive sexual awakenings if you're not careful. Pillow Queens are a four piece based in Dublin, Ireland. Formed in 2016, their State of the State EP caught the ear of Steve Lamacq who called the band's songs “deceptively infectious, with sharp hooks and sharp nails”. That EP's lead single, Favourite, with its accompanying dog-filled video, received airplay on BBC Radio 1, BBC Introducing, Radio X, and Amazing Radio as well as across Irish national radio stations. Two UK tours followed, along with a brace of sellout hometown shows in Dublin. January 2021 saw the four piece take on their US television debut, performing and interviewing on the CBS late night talk show The Late Late Show with James Corden. The band's debut album In Waiting has been praised by critics both home and abroad and was nominated for an RTE Choice Prize for Album of the Year. Hour 3 - Nick is live on location at Scramblers Diner for another Heroes Breakfast! Veterans eat free from 6-9 a.m. Here's what he covers this morning: Last week, USA Today published an op-ed from Mitchell about competing against transgender athletes and her decision to push forward with an appeal of the case. On May 25, editors at USA Today, without notice to Chelsea, changed the word "male" to "transgender" throughout her piece and condemned her use of "hurtful language." U.S. officials reportedly have a stash of data they have yet to examine that might shed new light on the true origin of the COVID-19 pandemic. Gwen Stefani has been repeatedly accused of “cultural appropriation” because of her love of Japanese street style, but the pop icon isn't caving in.

Dalmas are a Manchester based rock band made up of singing drummer George Farrar, Jacob Maguire (guitar) and Augustus Clark (bass). After forming in the summer of 2018 the group started writing hard hitting stadium rock anthems about life's struggles, influenced by bands such as Biffy Clyro, Nothing But Thieves and Foo Fighters. After releasing their latest single 'Jhm' in January 2021, the band have been championed by Tom Robinson's BBC 6 Music show, BBC Introducing, XS Manchester and Amazing Radio. Because of Lockdown in the U.K. none of the band members are in the same location at the moment. This episode is derived from a series of recordings we did. Dalmas's debut EP 'Stay' is set top be released in late March of 2021. You are going to love this! - In this episode we sit down with Katherine Aly Here's how it went down. She says write music that’s the soundtrack of our dancing with our shadows. Genre-agnostic so -headsup- my tunes don’t sound like each other or like their live versions… who cares, right? it’s good to expect the unexpected
Since then her music has alternated with film roles (Pulp Fiction, Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, Sherlock Holmes) plus theatre work (War Horse, The Street Of Crocodiles) and TV drama (Pramface, The Street, You Me And the Apocalypse). However she maintains a special place for singing, writing and performing music. Bronagh has recently released her 3rd album of new material called Gather Your Greatness and joins Mark Millar to talk all about it. This weeks featured track is ‘Lost And Found' from Birmingham's Glenn Smyth. The track is from his forthcoming EP ‘A Sense Of Freedom'. Mixed by Owen Morris (Oasis, The Verve) and produced by Dave McCabe, ‘Lost And Found' is the follow up to ‘Dead To The World' and ‘What Have I Done To Deserve This?', which received support from the likes of BBC Introducing, Amazing Radio, This Feeling and XS Noize. After a youth spent playing football for Derby County, a near career ending fractured fibula and tibia meant Glenn had time on his hands. This resulted in him picking up the guitar for the first time and his journey into music began. After a few brushes with the law as a misguided teenager, the guitar was picked up again, but this time a love of songwriting was born, specifically writing gritty songs that are somewhat lacking in today's world of beige. Two cult Birmingham bands in Escobar and Evil Alien followed which bought parallel levels of success in two very different worlds. Escobar – an up tempo rock n roll band in the mold of Oasis and The La's, and Evil Alien – soundscapes, beeps and synths influenced by the likes of Cabaret Voltaire and Depeche Mode, championed by Zane Lowe, BBC Radio 1 and Q Magazine.
