Welcome to The Spark, your creative pick-me-up from The Creative Boom Podcast. Every Thursday, we bring you a shorter, snappier episode to give you that midweek boost of inspiration. We'll share creative news, practical tips, book recommendations, and even some emails from our listeners. Whether you're looking for a quick shot of creativity or need some insights to carry you into the weekend, The Spark has got you covered. In this episode, we looked back on Monday's interview with Brian Cannon and the incredible listener feedback we received about the golden days of designing for Oasis in the '90s. Plus, we teased our next guest, Seema Sharma, and the fascinating conversation we'll have about creativity and AI—exploring what it means for the industry, and whether AI is a friend or foe. In Creative News, we discussed Mozilla's new retro-inspired brand identity designed by JKR, and Meta's latest AI innovations, including celebrity-voiced chatbots and AR glasses. Closer to home, Factory International's creative skills training in Manchester is making waves in local venues. And we revealed the UK creative industries' impressive £124.6 billion contribution to the economy. In The Spotlight, we shone on Shaping Tomorrow, a groundbreaking new podcast series produced by Hear Art that amplifies the voices of deaf creatives in the industry. Our Book of the Week, The Third Gilmore Girl by Kelly Bishop, is a memoir that goes beyond acting to explore resilience, women's rights, and personal triumphs. For Tip of the Week, we had a mental health reminder from Liam Hopkins of Lazerian Studio on nurturing your mind and embracing rest as a creative tool. Finally, in Letters to the Editor, we shared thoughtful listener emails about balancing work, managing perfectionism, and why it's refreshing to have platforms that don't always focus on the bigger industry names. If you'd like to share your thoughts on this episode, or any from our show, send your thoughts to letters@creativeboom.com, and we'll do our best to read them out during next week's The Spark.

Episode Notes During the 2020 elections, Virginia voters passed a Redistricting Commission Amendment. The short version: it changes how Virginia draws its political district lines. In the past, whatever party held majorities in the Virginia General Assembly approved pretty much whatever district maps it wanted to. Parties have used district maps as a political weapon to maintain their power. It's a tool called gerrymandering. But now the map-drawing process is changing. Will Virginia's new redistricting commission help our flawed democracy? Does it go far enough? This week, we talk with Brian Cannon, former Exective Director of One Virginia 2021, the nonprofit that spear-headed the amendment. We also talk with Virginia Delegate Mark Levine, who has concerns about how this is unfolding and whether the amendment goes far enough.

Guest BioSondra Jones has spent her adult life researching, listening, writing and doing fieldwork regarding Native American in Utah, Colorado and New Mexico. With a secondary emphasis in anthropology, Jones's fieldwork projects include work within Utah's Uintah and Ouray Reservation. She has a PhD in U.S. History from the University of Utah (2013) and has taught American, Utah and Native American Studies at the U of U, BYU and Utah Valley University. Author of over a dozen articles on Native American history, as well as two other published works, Jones' book Being and Becoming Ute represents decades of careful research and writing. As Dr. Brian Cannon, former Director of the Charles Redd Center for Western Studies and now chairperson of the BYU History Department, stated: “…this sweeping narrative charts the history of the Ute people from prehistoric times into the twenty-first century, showcasing their pragmatic adaptive strategies and exploring their challenges. Jones helps readers to understand tensions and differences of opinion within Ute society between full-bloods and mixed-bloods, modernizers and traditionalists, and the difficulty of maintaining a Ute identity and cultural essence in the face of mainstreaming material and cultural forces.”SummaryJones describes how she came to her subject, how she and her husband transitioned from being English and mathematic majors, to pursing archeology and history. She shares a number of stories, early in her work with the Utes, including her Native American husband's involvement as a Ute Sun Dancer (performing in the most important spiritual ceremony of the Ute tradition). Jones also describes the Ute's ability at gradual adaption in technologies: hunting and gathering (from on foot to horseback), food ways, clothing; the Indian reservation system and its effects; the perils of seeking Native American “traditions;” the Spanish trails, caravan trading and the active slave trading, across Utah and the Southwest, prior to the mid-19th century; shortcomings in earlier historical approaches; stories of the Timpanogos Utes, their acquisition of the horse, and prior to this, their interest in creating an alliances with Spanish explorers, to aid in protecting against marauding Shoshoni from the north; various Ute leaders are named along with how they succeeded as leaders, and more. Do you have a question or comment, or a proposed guest for “Speak Your Piece?” Write us at “ask a historian” – askahistorian@utah.govURLs (book purchase links, associated exhibit, products, video links, etc.)To read about and purchase a copy of Being and Becoming Ute: The Story of an American Indian People (2019), go to the University of Utah Press (hard copy, soft and eBook) or gather up the ISBN number (9781607816577) and high tail-it to your local independent bookseller and order a copy there. **** URL Link to the above -- https://uofupress.lib.utah.edu/being-and-becoming-ute/

Reduce Driver Turnover to 25%. It’s a bit wild, extremely important, and our main goal at Nussbaum. And that makes it our Wildly Important Goal (WIG). Each departmental team at Nussbaum has its own tasks to complete to make it happen. Listen in as Jeni Wettstein and Michaela Mogged explain the accounting team’s actions and Brian Cannon gets serious (except for a few a lot of jokes) about the Load Planners goals. Accounting WIG We say farewell to Jeni as she leaves Nussbaum and prepares for married life. She’s passing the baton off to Michaela to lead the Accounting team. They talk money – the frustrations of incorrect driver settlements and how they’re working proactively to ensure correct settlements. Did you know you can review your settlement for errors before your pay hits the bank? Load Planner WIG Of course, there are jokes – it’s a conversation with Brian! But, he gets serious and tackles tough questions about what happens in operations. Like why you may wait too long for your next load and how they’re working on mitigating home time misses. Sit behind the keyboard of a load planner and see how they produce the routes to get you the miles. Quotes “Hey Brian, what’s your WIG?” “Well, I’ve got a few of them. I’ve got a little blonde bob I wear sometimes. And on the weekends, I want to let my hair down, I’ve got a longer wig with some curls at the top…” “Did you know that on I-39 a wig truck tipped over? They don’t even know what happened! But authorities are still combing the area.” “If I can get a guy home for 45 hours or 50 hours and still make the next load, that’s what we want to do.” “I always tell the drivers, ‘You’re the one that keeps the lights on in here. You pay the bills and put food on our table.” “You have to have patience because it’s a waiting game for us and we can’t always plan ahead. A lot of times, planning ahead will cause a lot of extra work [with variables happening in the mean time].” Links Episode 18 – The Wildly Important Gap: Les Kaschner

Quotes “Your eyes are sure to roll at some of the jokes your ears are about to be blessed with.” “We’ve got a room full of one-uppers right now. This is not going to end well.” “What makes a Dad Joke?” “It’s gotta be cheesy. Corny. A groaner, if you will.” “If you can finish the joke in front of the other dad, you win his cargo shorts.” “That’s why I can’t remember my daughter’s name half of the time because all of those dad jokes are in the brain.” Bonus Video Here’s a collection of Dad Jokes presented by some familiar faces from the Nussbaum office.

Tired of the polarized politics? If so, Brian Cannon is your guy. He runs an organization called OneVirginina2021, aimed at redistricting reform. He shares a bit about his personal story-- how he made the shift from high school football to student government, how he used music to teach high school history and about his tenure as Mark Warner's body man. We dive deep into the nuts and bolts of gerrymandering (27:50). Then Blaine challenges Brian to a mock debate (41:10). One Note: This episode was recorded before the election, but is still relevant after it. Democracy shall endure.
