Wait -- the same guy who made 1995's "Sense and Sensibility" also made "Hulk" ('03), "Brokeback Mountain" ('04), "Life of Pi" ('12) and "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon" ('00)?! Director Ang Lee's career has been a series of surprises and experiments but, through it all, he's maintained a focus on philosophy over genre: exploring our place in the world through a perspective shaped by both Eastern and Western ideas. In this episode, Mike and Brian talk transcendence and the art of swordplay, as well as decide whether or not to keep or kick "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" from the year's top five. Crooked Table Podcast - The world of film from a fresh angle
In Episode 97 of the Crooked Table Podcast, Robert Yaniz Jr. brings Kerri Jones onto the show to discuss Wong Kar-wai's acclaimed 2013 action drama The Grandmaster. Based on the life legendary martial arts master Ip Man, the film stars Tony Leung as the man who would ultimately change the course of history by training a young Bruce Lee. The Grandmaster explores the events that led Ip Man to this destiny as well as his complicated relationship with Gong Er (Zhang Ziyi of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon fame). Brimming with sumptuous visuals and heartbreaking themes, The Grandmaster is indicative of Wong Kar-wai's filmography as whole. This week's guest has particularly been interested in discussing her love for his work, and this selection certainly serves as a good starting point for both Rob and listeners who have a severe lack of Wong Kar-wai in their lives. Listen in as we dissect his most recent film. Along the way, we'll touch on how Wong Kar-wai's work — especially 2000's In the Mood for Love — has affected our guest and explore the ties that bind Wong Kar-wai to recent Oscar winner Barry Jenkins (Moonlight). So find some time to sit back, relax and wade into the complex cinematic tapestry that is the hallmark of director Wong Kar-wai. SHOW NOTES Buy Kai's book, Becoming Version 2.0, on Amazon! Actual Anarchy Podcast - AnCap Movie Reviews from a Rothbardian Perspective
We get into "Hero" a mythical retelling of the historical story of the first emperor of China who used military conquest in a bid to unite the country and implement peace. Not to be confused with the Mariah Carey movie of the same name, Hero starring martial arts legend Jet Li in a visually stunning martial arts epic where a fearless warrior rises up to defy an empire and unite a nation! With supernatural skill ... and no fear ... a nameless soldier embarks on a mission of revenge against the fearsome army that massacred his people. Let's just say that we find the means dubious to attempt to achieve a noble goal. Show notes: http://www.ActualAnarchy.com/71 Robert and I analyze popular movies from a Rothbardian/Anarcho-Capitalist perspective. We use movies as a starting point for people who may not be familiar with this way of thinking. Discussion of the plot and decisions that characters make in relation to morality and violations of the non-aggression principle are our bread and butter. We also will highlight and discuss any themes or lessons from Austrian Economics that we can glean from the film. The point is to show what anarchy actually is with instances that are presented in film. We publish at least once per week; and occasionally will do specials surrounding holidays or events (elections/olympics) and have guests. SUBSCRIBE, RATE AND REVIEW ON APPLE PODCASTS (or iTUNES)
The Filmlosophers, Eddie Villanueva, Chad Riley and Spencer Williams, screw up time and space with this week's review of The Cloverfield Paradox (2018). The surprise third installment of JJ Abrams' Cloverfield-verse, which dropped on Super Bowl Sunday on Netflix, is a cautionary tale that somewhat ties together the previous films in the series, Cloverfield (2008) and 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016). Even against a backdrop that includes a global energy crisis and tinkering with the multiverse with an out-of-this-world particle accelerator, the film's strength lies in its impressive cast and diverse characters. The Cloverfield Paradox stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Daniel Brühl, Zhang Ziyi, David Oyelowo, Elizabeth Debicki and more.
Crooked Table Podcast - The world of film from a fresh angle
In Episode 74 of the Crooked Table Podcast, Robert Yaniz Jr. and Freddy Yaniz pop into the world of Netflix for a discussion of what they've been watching on the ubiquitous streaming service, including principally an in-depth review of surprise sequel The Cloverfield Paradox. Ten years after the franchise started with a found-footage monster movie, the J.J. Abrams-produced space horror show makes it way into subscribers' homes immediately following the conclusion of the Big Game. But is the marketing gimmick worth the gamble, or is Clover herself due for a cinematic fall from grace? Here we answer that question and look toward the future of the Cloverfield franchise, including this fall's fourth entry. We’re excited to hear your feedback as the Crooked Table Podcast continues to evolve. As usual, the show does feature explicit language and, as such, is best considered NSFW. Thanks for listening!
