Keir Starmer's migration speech has sparked a backlash – from across the political spectrum and for various reasons. Do we have a “problem” with migration – and what does the PM actually think he's solving? Gavin Esler speaks with migration policy expert and campaigner Zoe Gardner to unpack what's really going on, what circumstances are impacting the numbers, how we can be more honest about the situation – and what you really need to know about it. Recent elections in Europe have seen wins for parties with harsh stances on migration. That mirrors Donald Trump's success in the US. Inflammatory claims shape political debate, while statistics deny a link between rising crime and migration. So why is this happening? In this Episode: Suzanne Lynch, Associate Editor and author of the Global Playbook newsletter at POLITICO. Zoe Gardner, Independent migration policy researcher and advocate of rights-based policies. Meghan Benton, Director of the International Program at the Migration Policy Institute, an independent research organisation. Alex Andreou, Naomi Smith with special guest migration, policy one-woman army, Zoe Gardner ask what happened to the sunlit uplands, the magical cake, the oven ready pie - and all the other things we were promised in 2016. Also, a frank discussion about Britain's true immigration problem: that numbers are dropping off a cliff. Plus 'Wokey Dokey' and a Dramatic Reading of Daniel Hannan. ***SPONSOR US AT KO-FI.COM/QUIETRIOTPOD*** “The arguments for Brexit were masking something much more sinister and deeper in the ideology of those who were advocating for it.” “The same people are now saying let's leave the ECHR. It will never be enough. There will always be another thing, another right that we as citizens can give up, to pursue this agenda of wiping out the diversity of our country.” “PEM is the right direction but it's not a game-changer. We have a rare opportunity for a limited conversation about what we need from the EU and we need to prioritise full beneficial alignment.” “People who are secure about their identity don't tend to worry about foreigners. Brexit triggered an identity crisis. English nationalists had to redefine theirs, to cohere. For decades, being against the EU had acted as a proxy. The moment that was removed, their identity fell apart.” “There is a massive performative element [to Trump's deportations]. So much of our politics is done in the media that image is everything. Those deportations were taking place under the Biden administration, but it is Trump who has released the imagery.” “There is no reasonable Right, any more. It doesn't exist. Don't kid yourselves. We should not be compromising. Keir Starmer promised a Labour government would “turn the page” on scandal - but he's already under fire after a late declaration of thousands of pounds of gifts. As the Tories clamour for an investigation, Nish and Coco take to the PSUK couch to weigh in on the row.Later, they're joined by independent researcher on migration policy Zoe Gardner to discuss why Starmer is seeking immigration lessons from Italy's prime minister Giorgia Meloni. Zoe tells us about Italy's controversial migration deals with North African countries and Albania, as well as what a migration system with a degree of humanity might look like.Next we open the mailbag to hear your unpopular policy suggestions - ranging from taxes on second homes to a maximum wage cap.Useful Links: Tickets for Nish Kumar: “Nish, don't kill my vibe” https://www.nishkumar.co.uk/Guests: Zoe Gardner https://www.tiktok.com/@zoejardiniereAudio credits:The TelegraphTimes RadioX / Ed MilibandPod Save the UK is a Reduced Listening production for Crooked Media.Contact us via email: PSUK@reducedlistening.co.ukWhatsApp: 07494 933 444 (UK) or + 44 7494 933 444 (internationally)Insta: https://instagram.com/podsavetheukTwitter: https://twitter.com/podsavetheukTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@podsavetheukFacebook: https://facebook.com/podsavetheukYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/podsavetheworld

The UK Supreme Court has upheld a ruling by the Court of Appeal that found that a scheme to send asylum seekers to Rwanda is unlawful. In a unanimous decision, the country's most powerful court rejected arguments from the Conservative government that Rwanda had given them clear and trustworthy diplomatic assurances about the safety of migrants sent to the central African nation. Refoulement, in this context, is the process of genuine refugees being sent back to the countries from which they'd fled. The ruling is a damning indictment on the some of the hard-line immigration policies pushed by the Tories, but Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is not backing down. Immigration policy expert and the rights of migrants and refugees Zoe Gardner spoke to Corin Dann.

This episode we are talking to the brand new editorial team for the Last Straw Journal - Alex Henderson, Gavin Fraser, Kenny Fallon & Zoe Gardner! The Last Straw JournalTHE ALTERNATIVE JOURNAL OF DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION - for dirtbags and dreamers - since 1992The Last Straw is a platform to share and explore ideas of a better world through the lens of building methods and materials. In the face of climate crisis and increasing alienation from each other and the Earth, we believe another world is possible. Our goals are to bring a critical perspective to conventional practice, imagine alternatives, and connect designers, builders, and dreamers. We offer both an uncomplicated introduction to alternative building, and a rigorous review of the latest developments. We learn from the past and present to help each other build a more autonomous future. For over 25 years, The Last Straw was the only international journal dedicated to natural building and ecological design. It was startedas a collective effort by straw bale builders Matts Myhrman and Judy Knox in Tucson, Arizona in 1992. Since then twenty four editors, three publishers, and countless contributors have continued the long conversation about alternative ways of building and living. The magazine began during the natural building revival of the 90's, but a publication like this is needed now more than ever. In the fall of 2020 a group of friends got together to bring new life to The Last Straw. Last week 27 people tragically drowned trying to cross the Channel from France, and 2021 has seen a record number of migrants attempt to the treacherous journey. Why is this? And how can we prevent more lives needlessly being lost? Zoe Gardner, policy and advocacy manager at the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants, talks to Justin Quirk about why more people than ever are trying to cross the Channel, and how we can make our asylum system work for everyone. “We knew this disaster was coming, and we could have prevented it.” “The UK will never have a fair and decent asylum system in isolation. We need this to be an international effort.” “There is currently a bill in Parliament which will throw refugee protection out the window.” “We need to change the narrative that the UK is happy with having deadly borders.” Presented by Justin Quirk. Does June 2016 seem like only yesterday? Or does it seem like an eternity? Fives years on from the referendum hosts Luke Cooper and Zoe Williams meet up with Laura Parker from the Another Europe National Committee to reflect on a period of dramatic change in UK politics. They uncover some small shoots of hope, despite all the problems we face, and lay out a strategy for the movement going forward from here. We also hear from some other members of the Another Europe National Committee with Zoe Gardner, Alex Fernandes, Julie Ward, and Shaista Aziz, offering their thoughts on five years of pain but also tremendous resistance. How can one institution be so universally criticized, not just by the immigrants and citizens who at one point or another must use its services, but by all those who encounter it, whether lawyers, judges, activists, journalists, or even those who work there. Daniel Trilling, a journalist who has been covering immigration for a decade, spent six months investigating for The Guardian the organizational culture and history of the Home Office to answer this simple question: wtf is going on there? He talked to me about what he found. Sources & further reading
Have you heard that black cohosh is “for menopause”? Or that red clover is a “natural estrogen replacement”? Or that saw palmetto (Serenoa repens) is “for men” or “for BPH”?Herbs are not gendered, and they’re not “for” conditions. They have qualities and actions, and they act in context – the context of each individual body. Herbs act on particular types of tissue, and it turns out that in the reproductive system, the various forms and functions mask a deeper similarity, a more fundamental identity. Saw palmetto doesn’t check your chromosomes or your estrogen/testosterone ratio before it goes to work in your system: it acts on the pelvic floor organs, regardless of their shape. In this episode we deconstruct saw palmetto’s famous ability to help out with BPH, widening our scope to consider other patterns of pelvic stagnation and atrophy this herb can help us correct. We even look outside the reproductive system entirely, noting historical precedent for this herb as a digestive tonic and respiratory expectorant. Historical traditions, contemporary science, and our own direct experiences with the herb all provide helpful points of contact which help us draw a much fuller picture of the herb than “good for BPH”.Saw palmetto is a complex herb, with actions that can seem – at first glance – contradictory. Taking this in-the-round view of the herb helps us see it more clearly and resolve some confusion. This lesson goes beyond this one herb, though – we always need to be aware of our culture’s tendency for reductionism and putting herbs in neat boxes.Mentioned in this episode:Sabal in The History of the Vegetable Drugs of the U.S.P. by John Uri Lloyd (1911)Serenoa – Saw Palmetto in King’s American Dispensatory by Harvey Wickes Felter & John Uri Lloyd (1898)Serenoa in The Eclectic Materia Medica, Pharmacology and Therapeutics by Harvey Wickes Felter (1922)Serenoa: Eclectic materia medica for Saw Palmetto – this includes text from Willam Bloyer (writing in the Eclectic Medical Journal, 1896), with commentary from Paul Bergner at the North American Institute of Medical Herbalism (1997)Saw Palmetto in A Modern Herbal by M. Britain's migrant workers are living through a huge moment of change. The country's immigration system has now fundamentally changed after the exit from the European Union and vast numbers of migrants have left Britain during the Coronavirus pandemic. Thousands of the most vulnerable EU nationals risk falling through the cracks and losing their right to remain as the settled status deadline looms. Meanwhile, despite a historic new level of immigration control, the Tory government appear desperate to find a new scapegoat with threats to clampdown on asylum seekers and activist lawyers. To take stock of these changes, and shed light on the quiet struggles underway for human dignity, hosts Zoe Williams and Luke Cooper are joined by Zoe Gardner, from the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants and Alena Ivanova, from the Another Europe office and Right to Stay campaign.
The end of June marked the anniversary of the arrival of the Windrush Generation in the UK, and sparked renewed conversations about the Hostile Environment. It’s been reported that UK immigration policies have stopped migrants from getting healthcare during the Covid-19 pandemic, despite a government exemption from immigration checks and fees. Just this week, MPs passed a new immigration bill which ends freedom of movement and introduces a point-based system instead. So, how has the Hostile Environment affected people, particularly during the pandemic? Have migrants been hit harder by Covid-19? And what does the new immigration bill mean for migrant communities in the UK?
