In a recently published report, “Criminalisation and Repression of Climate and Environmental Protests”, Dr. Oscar Berglund and his colleagues identified four key mechanisms through which climate and environmental protests are repressed: the introduction of new anti-protest laws, the broadening use of existing legislation, excessive policing and killings and disappearances of activists. Alasdair and Oscar discuss the findings of the report and the ways in which the clampdown on climate protest represents a threat to both democracy and net zero targets. Oscar Berglund is Senior Lecturer in International Public and Social Policy in the School for Policy Studies at the University of Bristol. He is an expert on climate change activism and civil disobedience.Audio engineering by Vasko Kostovski.Further reading:Criminalisation and Repression of Climate and Environmental Protests, University of Bristol, 2024Civic Activism in an Intensifying Climate Crisis, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, 2024 Saving Ourselves: From Climate Shocks to Climate Action, Columbia University Press, 2024Click here to read our investigation into the UK biomass supply chain, or watch a clip from the BBC Newsnight documentary.

Extinction Rebellion's co-founder Clare Farrell and conservation scientist Dr Charlie Gardner team up once more to discuss issues and stories they feel are not getting enough airtime. They want to make sure that the latest news in science and important reports that are relevant to the climate and ecological crisis are flagged and explained in ways that are easy to understand.EPISODE 20: Doom loops, missing clouds, and activist repressionThis time, Clare and Charlie explore the 'doom loops' of climate change and geopolitical instability as coined by Laurie Laybourn and James Dyke, the connection between clouds and the recent pulse in global heating, and another report into the state of activist repression around the world.References:Doom Loopshttps://theconversation.com/a-doom-loop-of-climate-change-and-geopolitical-instability-is-beginning-244705Activist repressionhttps://bpb-eu-w2.wpmucdn.com/blogs.bristol.ac.uk/dist/f/1182/files/2024/12/Criminalisation-and-Repression-of-Climate-and-Environmental-Protests.pdf Please, share, comment, subscribe, like, mobilise, and donate! https://chuffed.org/xr/uk

Acknowledgement of Country// Headlines// Researcher and urbanist Guadalupe Granero Realini joined us to discuss the recent launch of the Global Observatory on Short-Term Rentals, an initiative led by a coalition of Latin American organisations working on housing and urban issues to track governance patterns, private sector pushes and activist action on short-term rentals and their impact on housing markets worldwide. Guadalupe works on territorial justice, and her research is currently focused on extractivist processes in Latin America which dispossess communities in cities as well as in rural and wild environments. Whenever she can, she teaches, collaborates with social organisations and participates in the media. She developed part of her research in Rio de Janeiro, as well as at Ryerson University and the University of Montreal as an ELAP fellow. In 2017 she published Territories of Inequality. Urban Policy and Spatial Justice (Territorios de la Desigualdad. Política Urbana y Justicia Espacial).// Sanmati Verma, Legal Director at Human Rights Law Centre, spoke about some recent updates in the legal landscape governing so-called Australia's carceral border regime, including in relation to the imposition of punitive visa conditions onto asylum seekers released from detention centres into the community, and the question of 'voluntary' cooperation with deportation orders. The former issue relates to the case of YBFZ v Minister for Immigration, Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs [2024], where last week the High Court determined by majority that the Albanese Government's imposition of curfew and ankle bracelet monitoring conditions are contrary to Chapter III of the Constitution and invalid - a decision that the Minister, Tony Burke, has immediately sought to overturn by introducing new legislation into Parliament. The latter issue of cooperation with deportation orders relates to whether indefinite detention was unlawful in circumstances where a person - in this case, an asylum seeker referred to by the pseudonym ASF17 - is not cooperating with their deportation because they fear harm in their home country. You can read HRLC's explainers on the cases of YBFZ here, ASF17 here, and NZYQ from November 2023 here.// We listen back to a conversation from last month between Wednesday Breakfast's Nita Okoko and artist Niki Koutouzi. Niki is an exhibiting artist at Incinerator Gallery's 2024 annual award show, ‘Art for Social Change'. This award provides recognition for artists addressing critical topics shaping our social-cultural worlds today, such as first nations justice, climate crisis, disability justice, queer histories and more. This year, Niki is one of 27 shortlisted artists showing alongside highly acclaimed artist and winner of this year's award, Sam Peterson. The exhibition is open until Saturday the 24th of November.// Chris Christoforou, CEO of VAADA, the peak body for Victoria's alcohol and other drug treatment services, joined us to talk about the long awaited news of Victoria's pill testing/drug checking trial, as well as the latest 2024 overdose statistics. Victoria's pill testing trial aims to reduce harm and save lives, and a mobile service will begin during this summer's music festival season, attending up to 10 festivals and events throughout the trial. A fixed site, due to open in mid-2025 will be co-located at a health service and operate from inner Melbourne, close to nightlife and transport.//

Les médecins qui pratiquent l'IVG risquent la prison et les Texanes en sont réduites à avorter chez elles illégalement ou à se rendre d'autres États, conduisant à une hausse de la mortalité maternelle de 56 %. Women's Fightback 31, Spring/Summer 2024. The thread running through this edition of Women's Fightback is the state, and its capacity to coerce, oppress and harm. The prison system is a rough place at the best of times. But for pregnant women it is a living nightmare, and for newborns it can be deadly. Criminalisation is threatening our reproductive rights like never before. In Israel, state repression is unleashed on opponents of atrocities being committed in Gaza and teenagers refusing to serve in the military. In response to these attacks, we discuss abolitionism, and explore the debate over how the left engages with public sector workers who are, willingly or not, a part of the state machine. We also bring you reports of the fight against sexism in the trade union movement; a story of anti-racist organising in the 1980s; reviews of feminist films and art exhibitions; and plenty of international reports and analysis from Belarus, Sudan, Ireland, Iran and more. Beyond that, you will find a wealth of cultural criticism; an exhibition on feminist revolt; tales of Unwell Women and Genoa's trans outcasts of the 1960s; dispatches from Mexico's struggle for abortion rights and the fight for democracy in Hong Kong; feminist dissidents in Belarus, and much more. We hope you enjoy it! Article list: No Births Behind Bars The socialist case for abolition Soft cops or class fighters? #meTU Sexism in the unions Who's afraid of gender?
--- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/yplusglobal/message

Chronic pain is a silent pandemic affecting somewhere between 8 and 28 million people in the UK alone. Recent headlines (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-65596283) reveal it's contributing to 2.5 million Brits leaving work. But more alarming still, is our response. The UK prescribes more opioid pain killers per capita than any other country in the world. This is in spite of NHS guidelines warning against its use for chronic pain. It is also in spite of a US opioid crisis that has plagued the nation with half a million fatal overdoses. But opioids are not the only option. Medical cannabis has been legal in the UK for almost five years, yet fewer than five people have ever been prescribed it on the NHS for chronic pain. Private clinics, by contrast, have issued over 89,000 prescriptions for unlicensed cannabis medicines not available on the NHS.Those who cannot afford private healthcare are left with a difficult choice: legal opioids, or illegal cannabinoids. And over a million are choosing the latter. Join us as we explore the UK's thriving black medical market, meeting patients, police officers, doctors and dealers. We also hear from those driving the UK's legal market in the face of many barriers, such as Arthur Wakeley, Managing Director of Celadon Pharmaceuticals Plc, and patients on their breakthrough clinical trial, who are fighting to spread awareness and acceptance of a plant that has been medically celebrated around the world for centuries, but painted as the world's worst drug in our own.Mathilda and Helena are joined in the studio by football pro and chronic pain warrior Stevo (@stevothemadman: also known for his unhinged comedy stunts storming social media!). They examine the mainstream media's approach to medical cannabis, asking questions of accuracy, balance and blatant mistruths. The Catholic Herald Podcast: Merely Catholic with Gavin Ashenden
Isabel Vaughan-Spruce is the guest on this week's episode of Merely Catholic, the podcast series for the Catholic Herald. The pro-life counsellor was arrested and charged by police in December after she admitted to them that she “might be” praying silently in her head outside a closed abortion facility in Birmingham. The Crown Prosecution Services have since dropped the charges but Miss Vaughan-Spruce intends to apply for a court verdict on whether she was breaking any laws. She talks to Dr Gavin Ashenden about her experience and about the chilling implications for such human rights as freedom of speech, expression, conscience, association and religion under new regulations which brook no public dissent from the culture of death.

In May 2022, the Delhi High Court delivered a verdict on several petitions seeking to remove the marital rape exception in the rape law. Section 375 of the Indian Penal Code excludes sexual intercourse between a married couple. The verdict was split with Justice Rajiv Shakder ruling in favour of removing the exception, and Justice C Hari Shankar dismissing the petition. In this episode, we try to discuss our opinion on the judgement, especially the dissenting verdict which seeks to keep the marital law exception in the rape law. Many states have repealed tough laws that put sex workers at risk of prosecution. But so far, Queensland hasn't followed suit. Now, the state government is looking at introducing new safeguards to protect those in the industry. Reporter Mahmood Fazal investigates.
Media Storm presented by Mathilda Mallinson and Helena Wadia. Warning: Some strong language and references to sexOnline or offline, the stigma that comes with being a sex worker is pervasive. But sex work is not just stigmatised - it's criminalised. Laws that ban certain aspects of sex work force workers into unsafe, unregulated environments, where they become even more vulnerable. This week, Media Storm heads to Bristol, where strip clubs face being outlawed by the council - in similar scenes to Chester, Swansea, and Blackpool. Critics of strip clubs seem to blame sex workers for the systematic problems of gender-based violence, yet our data research showed otherwise. Media Storm meets workers in the sexual entertainment industry who feel unheard and stuck in a limbo, following them to the Sex/Work Strike in London's Leicester Square on International Women's Day. Niki Adams from the English Collective of Prostitutes joins us in the studio to talk about decades advocating for full decriminalisation, and the common conflation of sex trafficking and sex work, with headline talk from Ukraine and around the world. The episode is hosted by Mathilda Mallinson (@mathildamall) and Helena Wadia (@helenawadia), with Helena Da Silva Merron and Priyanka Raval as researchers. The FIRs filed to regulate the sale and consumption of alcohol follow a curious template in Madhya Pradesh, our guests from today's episode found. An FIR is likely to begin with a tip from an anonymous informant. Police officers would then reach the “crime site” and find that the accused does not have the appropriate licence to sell liquor. On paper, the section they are charged under is about regulating the sale of alcohol. In practice, however, our guests for today's episode identify how this type of FIRs and subsequent legal proceedings reveal how power and control operate in India. Nikita Sonavane and Srujana Bej join us in this episode of Research Radio. We will be discussing their article titled Construction(s) of Female Criminality: Gender, Caste and State Violence. We recommend reading the two articles “The Anxious State” and “Death by Excise Policing: The Widening Web of Carcerality in India.” Their article was a part of a specially commissioned series of seven articles published in EPW Engage on the state of NT-DNT communities in India. Both researchers refer to the CPA Project's report "Drunk on Power: A Study of Excise Policing in Madhya Pradesh," which offers rich details and insights. Nikita Sonavane is the co-founder of the Criminal Justice And Police Accountability Project (CPA Project) focused on building accountability against criminalisation of marginalised communities by the police and the criminal justice system. Srujana Bej is a lawyer and researcher with interests in spatial justice, the rights to food and education, and critical legal studies.
In this interview with French political scientist Laure Neumayer, we discuss how a particular form of anti-communist memory politics were mobilized and utilized by "memory entrepreneurs" in Europe following the Cold War. A particular interpretation of the socialist past was put up against official European memory of the 20th century as the EU enlarged into Eastern Europe. A mixture of anti-communist nationalists, former dissidents and liberals wanted a pan-European identity to be rewritten in a way that criminalized communism as it had after World War II criminalized Nazism. Here's a description of Laure Neumayer's 2019 book The Criminalisation of Communism in the European Political Space After The Cold War: Memory has taken centre stage in European-level policies after the Cold War, as the Western historical narrative based on the uniqueness of the Holocaust was being challenged by calls for an equal condemnation of Communism and Nazism. This book retraces the anti-communist mobilisations carried out by Central European representatives in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and in the European Parliament since the early 1990s. Based on archive consultation, interviews and ethnographic observation, it analyses the memory entrepreneurs' requests for collective remembrance and legal accountability of Communist crimes in European institutions, Pan-European political parties and transnational advocacy networks. The book argues that these newcomers managed to strengthen their positions and impose a totalitarian interpretation of Communism in the European assemblies, which directly shaped the EU's remembrance policy. However, the rules of the European political game and recurring ideological conflicts with left-wing opponents reduced the legal and judicial implications of this anti-communist grammar at the European level.
Who was the war on drugs really targeting, and where does justice start for these communities? Jacquie is a powerful voice within the cannabis world and is recognised as a pioneer in the East Coast industry. Jacquie is the founder and CEO of CannabizMD, an organisation that focuses on achieving meaningful policy change through education, industry best standards and and quality patient care. Jacquie is also the founder of Tea Pad, a social enterprise on the forefront of changing cannabis' narrative by recognising the disparity in justice for black and brown communities and driving progressive change through empowering opportunities. In today's episode, Jacquie and I dive into the roots of cannabis stigma, and how a combination of racism, social exclusion and inordinate criminalisation shaped the perspectives of generations. We discuss what it takes to see meaningful policy change, the wonderful careers one can forge within the industry, and a whole lot more.
