After 7 Years and 344 Episodes it is time to say:  Thank you and goodnight Today - February 25th 2025 - marks the seventh anniversary since the first episode of this podcast went live to the world on February 25th 2018When I first launched the podcast I was advised that the vast majority of new podcast launches don't make it beyond episode seven. So to have reached 344 episodes in seven years of podcasting seems like a reasonable achievement. It also feels like the perfect time to draw halt to the Better Presentations More Sales podcastI started listening to podcasts around 2014 and I remember one of the shows I listened to was a social media marketing podcast hosted by Chris Marr up in Scotland. On one of his episodes the guest was a chap called Pete Matthew who revealed that he was from Penzance in Cornwall. Not too far from me in Truro and the first time I've heard anyone from Cornwall on a business podcast.Pete revealed on the episode that he'd been podcasting himself for quite a number of years.Knowing I needed some help to get started with podcasting I contacted Pete. He generously gave me his time back in the summer of 2016 and eventually after much procrastination I finally launched the podcast in February 2018. Ironically Chris Marr would end up being a guest on my show in 2024.The first 78 episodes were without guests before I worked out how to use Zoom and I interviewed Claire Boscq Scott from Jersey who I met sitting next to at a seminar at the London Business Show in 2019.Juanita Wheeler from Australia was my final and 130th guest.I do intend to return with a new podcast linked to presenting skills sometime maybe in the autumn but until then I'm very much focused on developing my on demand presentation and sales pitch training courses.I would like to say a few thank you's to all the people who made this podcast run for as long as it did.Firstly Pete Matthew who provided me with the knowledge and encouragement. My daughter Beth who edited most of the first year or two episodesHer friend Lauren who provided the voice introduction for the first batch of episodesMy son Jim who provided technical support when I first set up all the recording kit and his friend Robert who created the podcast logosThe 130 guests who have appeared on the showIt often felt like I was getting a one-to-one coaching masterclass so I'm very grateful for them sharing their insights, advice and expertise. And finally you the listeners of the showI can't believe it's been seven years - I've had a fantastic time and I will be back.So until then enjoy presenting and speaking and remember don't put too many words on your slides!I can help you transform your business presentations, create and convert sales opportunities and win more sales pitches. People who regard themselves as introverts often think that presenting and speaking isn't for them.So I'm delighted on this episode that founder of I-Factor Leadership Stacey Chazin talks about why introverts make great presentersStacey is a leadership coach who helps introverts embrace their strengths and step into leadership roles with confidenceIn her view introverts can be the most powerful and impactful speakers.Stacey herself is an introvert who believed she wasn't cut out for presenting and speaking. To answer why introverts make great presenters, Stacey talks about the innate strengths of introverts including thoughtful preparation, deep listening, as well as being good storytellers and being potentially more comfortable in front of an audience than having to engage in small talk with one or two people. Introverts by their very nature tend not to want to spotlight on themselves which means they are great at delivering presentations which focus on the audience and the audience needs rather than themselves and their own achievements This episode goes a long way to dis-spell the myth that you need to be an extrovert to be a great speaker or presenterStacey's two tips to help introverts start presenting:Start with a small audince - could be 3 or 4 colleaguesWeave in a story you are very familiar with Staceys mentions a conference survival guide for introverts: https://ifactorleadership.com/survivalguideAnd a Meeting Playbook for Introverts: 10 Strategies to Have Your voice Heard and Your Ideas Shine: https://ifactorleadership.com/meetingplaybook/You can find Stacey at https://ifactorleadership.comAnd on LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/in/chazinconsulting/If you think you might need some help with your next key presentation book a free 15 minute Zoom call with me and we can discuss your presentation and if I can help you.If I can then the next step would be a 40-50 minute Zoom call where I'll help ensure you don't waste this golden opportunity - we will go through your presentation and I will be your audience, your challenger and your coach. To find more about my full range of sales pitch and business presentation training and coaching offers please click on these links key presentation or Send us a textI can help you transform your business presentations, create and convert sales opportunities and win more sales pitches. You are not speaking to inform you are speaking to transform and remember how important it is to rehearse, rehearse and rehearse.Barbara Specter – don't show up and throw up! In other words if you are delivering a presentation think about how you can ask compelling questions and be curious and if you're doing a keynote at an event then before you present meet and greet some of the audience and use a couple of things from them when you start Emily Schneider – PowerPoint design – every slide needs to have a particular intention – how does that slide impact your audience? And make sure that you are utilising visuals to their best and that your slides are consistent and simpleConor Cunneen – humour is a great part of any presentation but don't try to be deliberately funny and unless you are very good don't tell jokes – allow the humour to develop naturallyNeil Gordon - transform your elevator pitch - here's a line that you could use to start your elevator pitch ‘ You know how hard it is… ‘ – use something like that and you will stand out from everybody else who will be saying things like my name is, I'm from and this is what we doIf you think you might need some help with your next key presentation book a free 15 minute Zoom call with me and we can discuss your presentation and if I can help you.If I can then the next step would be a 40-50 minute Zoom call where we will go through your presentation and I will be your audience, your challenger and your coach.I'll help ensure you don't waste the golden opportunity that your next key presentation is.To find more about my full range of sales pitch and business presentation training and coaching offers please click on these links key presentation or sales pitch If you are interested in trialling for free my online course ‘Transform your Business Presentations' then drop me an email to I can help you transform your business presentations and win more sales pitches. Delivering Confident and Impactful Presentations

Send us a textDelivering Confident and Impactful Presentations - something all presenters aspire to do. So how can you end up delivering confident and impactful presentations? Here's how: Confidence Boosters:Knowledge, Clothes and Notes - You are likely to be presenting on a subject you know well. You may even be an expert. Your audience are there for you. They want to learn from and he enthused by you. Look good, feel good. Choose clothes which you feel good in. Postcard size prompt cards give you something to hold. One or two words per slide can act as your prompt / safety net if you need it. Write big enough so you see the prompt at a glance. Preparation and Practice - Do thorough preparation - focus on what you know and what your audience are expecting. Don't go overboard on detail. Minimise slides and what's on them. Take practice seriously. Time it. Speak out-loud standing up if that is how you will be delivering your presentation. Distraction - The most nervous time is often the 10-15 minutes before you start. Use that time to meet & greet your audience, plan your evening, your next holiday - anything to take your mind off thinking about your presentation. Creating Impact:Start with Audience not you - Your audience want to be engaged, educated, enthused, even entertained by you. So from the get go talk about them, not about you. They are not interested in you, only how what you are sharing with them will benefit them. So no drum banging, awards, client logos or team pics at the start! Maximum of 3 Messages - Regardless of how long your presentation is focus on delivering for your audience no more than three key messages. They can remember and act upon three but they can't remember six or eight or 27. Use your Voice - Your voice is a key tool in your presentation armoury. Use it to maintain audience engagement, emphasise a key point, pick up or slow down the pace, pause for effect etc…Your voice can give you presence and boost your energy. Practice out-loud. Using your voice will stand you out. If you think you might need some help with your next key presentation book a free 15 minute Zoom call with me and we can discuss your presentation and if I can help you.If I can then the next step would be a 40-50 minute Zoom call where we will go through your pitch and I will be your audience, your challenger and your coach.I'll help ensure you don't waste the golden opportunity that your next key presentation is.To find more about my full range of sales pitch and business presentation training and coaching offers please click on these links I can help you transform your business presentations and win more sales pitches. Send us a textWhy is it that whenever we sit through a presentation whether that's an internal one or one at an event or one in a sales pitch format do we more often than not have to encounter slides that are largely packed with lots of words? And when I mean lots of words, I mean more than five or six words on a slide. In this episode of the Better Presentations More Sales podcast I want to talk about words on presentation slides.I believe that we should minimise the words on the slides. I ran a poll on LinkedIn recently asking the question ‘what was the purpose of having words on slides?'Almost half of the respondents said the words were there as a prompt for the presenter which suggested to me that most people think as a presenter the slides are there for you to read fromSo what does that say? If you're reading the slides I think it says one or both of these things:Firstly you've not done enough practice so you need the slides to tell you what to sayAnd secondly you might not know about the subject so you read the slides to sound as though you doEither way that's not great. So folks here's the challenge for you next time you deliver a presentationStart with one word and then add to it if you really need to.Please please please avoid slides with loads of bullet point sentences! So come on folks help me rid the world of presentation slides cluttered with loads of words!Find out more about my work with business presentersI've got two more autumn webinars coming up - 20 fast paced minutes and free - all you need to do is register by clicking on the title of the webinar:  Tues. Send us a textLots of business people either dislike or avoid presenting through a lack of confidence. In this episode I'm going to share with you some ideas for boosting your presentation confidence.Remember your audience are keen to hear from you because you are going to be sharing tips, ideas, advice and techniques etc.. based on your expertise, if you don't present they miss out.On that basis they want you to do well. Knowing that is a confidence booster. Spending time preparing well is a way of boosting your presentation confidence. Plan to start with something you are very familiar with which could be a big stat, a short story or maybe a prop – ensuring they are relevant to your presentation.Practice will also be way of boosting your presentation confidence. Speak your presentation out loud and take practice seriously. And then when it comes to the presentation day itself make sure you have something to eat, that you're wearing confident clothes, that your notes are postcard not A4 size and that you arrive early in a positive frame of mind.Ideal if you can do a room rehearsal of your first minute or two before anybody else arrives and then meet and greet the people that you're going to be presenting to. I hope you see these as ways of boosting your presentation confidence. If you like this episode then I've got three autumn webinars coming up - 20 fast paced minutes and free - all you need to do is register by clicking on the title of the webinar:Tues. Presenting and Pitching Tips for Sales People with Jonathan Gardner

Send us a textJonathan Gardner has a long career as a buyer with some of the world's biggest companies and he's now using the practical knowledge he acquired to help sales people pursue and close large accounts. In this episode we talk about the challenges that people currently face and the benefits that Jonathan brings to them from being on the other side of the presentation or sales pitch. Jonathan talks about what he calls the pitches that hit the mark and the ones that don't! These are usually the ones where the presenter or pitchers focuses on talking about their capabilities and the features of their product or service rather than the benefits it offers to the audience or prospective client. We also touch upon corporate slides and Jonathan suggests that if you have to use them then put most of them in the appendix and just leave one or two towards the beginning but tell a story around them because people love stories. As Jonathan states the sales people who do well when they pitch are the ones who share things with their audience that they don't already know and they demonstrate that they have clearly thought about what the audience need and come up with some ideas to help them.Jonathan's top tips are to have a storyline that fits in with your slide deck and to power map the room in other words know who is in your audience and then when you deliver the pitch be listening and watching all the time for signals that you can then utilise to your advantage.Jonathan believes that the characteristics of great sales people today are their ability to listen, their knowledge of analytics, and to have a well rounded approach that means they can pivot and be flexible depending on how the pitch or presentation is progressing. You could contact Jonathan via jonathan@thejgardnergroup our at JGarnergroup.comIf you need help from me click on these links if you want help with a key presentation or sales pitch - I'll help ensure you don't waste these golden opportunities. Check out my new online training platform OnlinePresentationCourses.com The main course is 'Transform your Business Presentations' To find out more Trevor's sales and presentation skills services visit trevorjlee.comBook a 15-20 minute informal no obligation no fee chat with Trevor Lee on Zoom. He wants us not to be people pleasers. As a coach Chris encourages his clients not to be people pleasers - instead to challenge those they are working with. The same applies to your presentation. Don't make it a people pleaser make it a people challenger. Your audience will get so much more from it if you take that approach. Chris's top tip: What is your first question going to be when you present? - one that will both engage and challenge your audience from the start. We talk about why it's a good idea to bring up early a potential resistance or objection, why as a presenter you need to be respected before you are liked and why you need to adapt your presentation for your audience. So many presenters use the same presentation for every audience. Chris has found that as a coach people want to be challenged and as a presenter you need to challenge your audience.Chris shares his four step approach to presentations and speaking to audiences: Question : Story : Result : ChallengeYou can find Chris at The Authoritative Coach and on Instagram under the same name. I have 3 copies of Chris's book ‘The Authoritative Coach' to give away. When it doesn't go to plan

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 12, 2024 10:02

Send us a Text Message. On Saturday August 3rd I took part in a coastal path running festival on the Roseland Peninsula in Cornwall. The festival offered several options all finishing at race HQ near St Austell. I was in for the 32 miler. A single stretch from St Anthony's Head.I dropped out after 21 miles at the Gorran Haven checkpoint. So what went wrong and what lessons can be learnt from that with regard to presenting and pitching? On reflection my preparation wasn't good enough.I simply hadn't done enough training. I'd been doing 60-70 miles a month but that wasn't enough and my long training runs weren't long enough.I also got my fuelling wrong. I carried loads of gels and food with me. I simply didn't eat enough of it, in the right order at the right times. My fault because I knew how to do this. My fuelling plan a]was too lax.I've reflected a lot of what happened. And I've listened to others. My big goal is the Arc of Attrition 50 miler at the end of January 2025. As I started to really struggle at around mile 16 my thoughts were that the Arc 50 was a ridiculous idea with no chance of me doing it.However I've changed my mind on that. But I do need a four month training plan and a better fuelling strategy. So how does this link to business presentations? Inevitably they don't always go to plan. Why do presentations go wrong?Very much like my run it's combination of preparation and practice. Generally speaking in my experience occasional business presenters underestimate how important to success preparation and practice are. When you're on a 32 mile run it's obvious when you've under preparedMaybe not so obvious when you deliver a business presentation Whenever you've delivered a business presentation take some time afterwards to reflect on what happened:Did you achieve your Purpose? In other words the outcome you were seeking? Were your audience engaged throughout? Did you have slides that weren't actually needed or contained too many words? How did you leave it with your audience - did you agree the next steps? If there was a Q&A how did that go?Did you run on time? If you didn't why was that? What would you do differently next time?Whether we are running 32 miles or delivering a business presentation we can always do better time - if that's what you want - and why wouldn't you want that? You can keep in touch with how I'm getting on via my Arc of Attrition Training Diary and the Running 44@60 podcast. I can help you transform your business presentations and win more sales pitches. Send us a Text Message. It's so easy when you're invited to deliver a presentation to forget to check in advance the venue that you are going to be speaking at in terms of the size of the room, the equipment available and the seating for the audience.I witnessed this firsthand recently at a business event. It was a big breakfast style event with 180 people squeezed into a rectangular space. There were a few sponsor type speakers who in return for sponsoring the event had been offered a 5 to 10 minute slot.I suspect none of them prior to the event checked the equipment that was going to be available to them, particularly in terms of the screen and the microphone. The screen was a big TV on wheels which was fine if you were sitting close to the where the speaker was standing but for the rest of audience (about 80%) the screen wasn't within their line of view.So when the speakers used either slides or videos the vast majority of their audience could not see what they were showing and for the videos the audio was just coming out through the screen. So check:Screen size, positioning, video audio and clickerMicrophoneSpeaking position in relation to audience. Transform your Sales Presentations with Will Barron

Send us a Text Message.Sales Presentations can often be long, dull and ineffective In this episode Will Barron founder of Salesman.com  and host of the ‘Selling Made Simple' podcast shares thoughts and advice to help you transform your sales presentations and pitches. Will reminds us that simplifying the sales process is a key to sales success and that applies to sales interactions, sales pitches and sales presentations. What a lot of sales people get wrong according to Will is that they don't focus on what the buyer needs to make a decision - this particularly applies to the content of sales pitches and presentations.   Will reminds us not to use slides that focus on things that make the seller look good rather than helping the buyer make the next step. What is it the buyer needs to see in the presentation? - finding that out pre-presentation will make such a difference to you achieving your desired outcome. If you deliver virtually Will says that you have to be a far superior communicator to have the same impact virtually that you would in-person.What does Will think about the future of sales?  You might have less salespeople doing poor cold outreach but when the deal gets to a certain size you'll want to speak to a human to conclude it.Will top tips for Presentations:Record your live presentation and watch it back - you can then check your body language and pacing and see if the audience actually care and are engaging with youTake more pauses and vary the tone of your voice  If you want to develop your presentation skills in your own time at your own pace checkout my newly launched online presentation courses website If you don't like the idea of learning how to transform your business presentations in a group environment then take my online course Transform your Business Presentations and learn at your own pace. Become a better business presenter

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 8, 2024 12:08

Send us a Text Message. In this episode I share 5 ways to help you become a better business presenterIf you become a better business presenter you will have more presentation success, which could well lead to more business revenues, and which in itself will increase your profile and maybe get you a bigger and better job!So what are those five ways to help you become better business presenter:Firstly prepare in advance – sounds obvious but so many people just don't give enough thought to the preparation particularly around the audience they are going to be presenting to.Secondly be prepared to practice and take it seriously when you do practice – if you do that you get a real feel for the content, flow and in particular the timing of your presentation. Next up don't let your slides dominate your presentation – a presentation is not about your slides it is about you the presenter – that's who the audience are buying into not your slides.Number four is learn from others – a great way to learn is to mimic people who do something better than you. So when you see a very good presenter in action next time mimic what they do when you next present. And finally believe in yourself, you can do this! Lots of people avoid delivering business presentations through a lack of self belief and confidence – get the steps above right and they will give you the confidence to present. Send us a Text Message. In this episode I share some tips on how to get your presentation off to a flying start. If you get your presentation to a flying start it will help you engage your audience and importantly make them think the rest of your presentation will be worth paying full attention to.There are  some things that won't help you get your presentation off to a flying start including:Telling jokes, talking about yourself and how great you are, rambling, putting an agenda on the screen, turning up with the lots of A4 notes.....So if you want to get your presentation off to a flying start here are four things you could do:Share a big stat - that is relevant to your audience Start with a headline statementTell a short story or anecdoteIntroduce a prop delivering in-person or a poll if delivering virtuallyIn all cases start slowly and use your voice to emphasis keywords and if you are using slides keep that first slide on the screen for the first minute or so to help the audience engage and focus on you rather than your slides. That will also help you when delivering in person focus on eye contact with the audience not with the screen! If you want to develop your presentation skills in your own time at your own pace checkout my newly launched online presentation courses website If you need any help with your presentations, either a key presentation or maybe some general presentation coaching or training then message me via LinkedIn. This is episode 313 of the Better Presentations More Sales podcastIf you don't like the idea of learning how to transform your business presentations in a group environment then take my online course Transform your Business Presentations and learn at your own pace. Don't Show up and Throw up when Sales Presenting with Barbara Spector

On this episode of the Better Presentations More Sales podcast I'm talking to sales force retention and development expert and speaker Barbara Spector about avoiding show up and throw up when sales presenting.Barbara is the founder of Smart Moves and a member of the National Speakers AssociationWe talk about why if salespeople simply Show up and Throw up when sales presenting they make it so hard for themselves when it comes to winning a sale for either a product or service.Barbara's sales training is based on a six-month blended learning program that aims to change the mindset of those who take part. There is a focus on body language and facial expression but one of the keys to sales success is to ask compelling questions and in so doing being curious. This will give the buyer an opportunity to share information in terms of the answers to the questions that given the right salesperson mindset will create sales opportunities. And that is why if you simply Show up and Throw up you will find it hard to engage your audience whether that's on a one-to-one or one to many basis. When it comes to speaking at an event, which according to Barbara is one of the best, if not the best, ways of attracting sales, Barbara suggests that you take time either the evening before or in the run-up to your speaking presentation to talk to the audience and the stakeholders and then use what you have heard from them as the first couple of minutes of your speaking presentation. That technique will help you engage your audience because you may well name check some of them and it will enable you to have a confident startYou can find Barbara at VIPchatwithBarb.comBarbara's two top tips for listeners to implement straightaway are:Make sure you have that connection with your audience before your presentation or speaking opportunityAnd think when you are having that sales conversation curiosity, curiosity, curiosity If you don't like the idea of learning how to transform your business presentations in a group environment then take Trevor's online course Transform your Business Presentations and learn at your own pace.
