Hey, have you heard that this AI thing is a big deal? That companies are slapping AI labels on every product they sell? That our benevolent robot overlords will favor those humans who speak highly of them now before they take over?  There was a lot of talk about that at Automate in Detroit this week, the annual trade show for industrial automation in which we imperfect biological organisms really do sit in awe of our technological superiors. Really, this is love, not fear. Sharing their observations on how much they look forward to this utopian future in which we'll be sure the keep the machines oiled and the software patched were: Mike Bacidore, Editor-in-Chief of Control Design Rehana Begg, Editor-in-Chief of Machine Design Robert Schoenberger, Editor-in-Chief of IndustryWeek and Editorial Director of Endeavor Business Media's Manufacturing Group Sharon Spielman, Technical Editor for Machine Design Linda Wilson, Editor-in-Chief of Vision Systems Design

In Season 2, Episode 2, Mark Graban and Jamie Flinchbaugh begin with Mark sharing about his Australia and New Zealand workshop tour with the Association for Manufacturing Excellence. Even koalas find their way into the conversation. Episode page with videos and more We then shift to our coffee selection of the day - pour overs. This old school method has found a resurgence not for being inexpensive but for giving you more control over the extraction process making it the best method for the best coffees. Jamie explains and demonstrates the process with enough details to get you going.  We then get to our main topics, beginning with some interesting statistics. 80% of Americans believe we'd be better off with more people working in manufacturing, but 25% of them believe that they would be better off if they worked in manufacturing. Whether skilled trades or engineers, we discuss why jobs in manufacturing are still getting a bad wrap. Continuing with manufacturing, we discuss the possible defunding and impact of the Manufacturing Extension Partnerships, a nationwide network of support centers for small- and medium-sized manufacturing businesses, which gets a significant amount of their funding from the National Institute of Standards and Technology.  Boeing is announcing a new, or refreshed, culture in an effort to turn the company around from a seemingly never-ending parade of crisis issues over several years. Are declarations of values enough? Do they need to be better defined? How do you back them up? We discuss all of this, including a mention of Jamie's video course on culture change. While discussing blue chip names, this is the 40th anniversary of New Coke, an introduction that was likely never needed. Was it a mistake, and how do you recover when the product and the brand is this iconic? We do not include a taste test of New Coke or Coke Classic. The size and scope of upcoming and existing tariffs on imported goods and components is changing rapidly as President Donald Trump's administration makes bold announcements followed by pauses and policy changes as it negotiates with targeted countries. While administration officials say the rapid changes should benefit manufacturers in the long term by making it cheaper to produce things internally instead of importing them from overseas, the constant upheavals make planning difficult for manufacturers in the U.S. that rely on materials and components from foreign suppliers. Discussing how companies can manage their supply chains during the back-and-forth of changing policies from Washington and abroad are: Darrell Edwards, a University of Tennessee System supply chain professor and a former chief supply chain officer and chief operating officer at La-Z-Boy Incorporated Ji Li, a supply chain advisor for J&J Investment and Consulting and a former supply chain director for Boeing Laura Putre, IndustryWeek's senior editor for leadership topics

ProMat 2025 continues this week, bringing tens of thousands and supply chain and material handling professionals to Chicago to see what's new and innovative. Several major themes were apparent in talking to exhibitors and show attendees: Labor reduction. Most distribution center operators say they're struggling to find enough people to do the daily work, and finding seasonal help when they want twice as many people. Exhibitors presented dozens of technologies that minimize training, simplify work or automate functions. Going up. Vertical systems are everywhere at the show. New facilities are building higher and higher roofs to be able to stack material vertically and minimize real estate costs. OEM-backed startups. IndustryWeek's Dennis Scimeca has been writing about this trend for a few years—major companies starting in-house incubators or venture capital operations to capture new ideas and product innovations. At ProMat, I talked to companies backed by Toyota, Nokia, Piaggio and several others.  Cool technology. Well, not exactly a trend, but something I definitely noticed. Whether it was robots that charge themselves while moving through a facility, AI-driven picking systems that automatically re-sorted misplaced goods or drones running inspection, there were just a bunch of cool, nifty ideas on display.

In this first installment, Mark and Jamie each have an espresso. Mark from an automated home machine and Jamie's from a more manual process. In future episodes, we'll likely get more into the process.  In this episode, we begin exploring the challenges of supply chain risk and dealing with the disruptions of tariffs. Uncertainty is having a huge impact on the economy. We discuss the impact on coffee from Columbia, the Risk Index from the Center for Supply Chain Research at Lehigh, and even Ferris Bueller's Day Off. We move on to discuss the changes being made at Starbucks. What allowed them to grow may not allow them to stay strong, but then again, there may be some subtle magic in those changes from free refills in store to having your name on your cup.  We explore the deliberate breakup of Honeywell, following in the footsteps of GE. This helps make an organization more focused on customers, value delivery, and the needed operations to make it all work. Is this a trend? If so, there are several reasons we believe it's a favorable one. We close out the topics with Mark's Toyota experience during a recent tour seeing examples of "raku", or devices that provide comfort or ease for team members. America is hungry for electricity. Between the rising number of data centers that power AI chatbots and cloud computing systems to electric vehicles to new home construction to trends in manufacturing, we need more electricity going into the system and upgrades to the distribution grid to safely deliver that power to users. Early Thursday, electronics manufacturing Flex announced plans to build a new facility near Dallas, Texas, to make switchgear and other components necessary to support data centers. The so-called power pods include all of the major components needed to add adequate power for electric-hungry data processing facilities.  And the Flex news follows recent announcements from Eaton Corp. and Schneider Electric on similar investments in grid-supporting components. ArcelorMittal recently announced a $1.2 billion plant in Alabama to make speciality steel for electrical applications as well. Major electrical equipment manufacturers are boosting production of transformers and switches to make that happen. Our editors roundtable from Endeavor Business Media (owner of IndustryWeek) include: Chris Butler, president of Embedded and Critical Power at Flex Nikki Chandler, group editorial director for T&D World, EnergyTech and Microgrid Knowledge Sara Jensen, executive editor of Power & Motion Robert Schoenberger, editor-in-chief of IndustryWeek Matt Vincent, editor-in-chief of Data Center Frontier

Many modern manufacturing plants generate some amount of electricity, either from solar panels on the roof or diesel generators or natural gas turbines. Some are trying to meet sustainability goals, others are working to ensure they'll have the power they need to run production. Great power not only comes with great responsibility (my apologies to Stan Lee), it comes with managment challenges. Making use of on-site power typically demands a microgrid to cycle betwen power from utilities and the electricity generated by other resources. As part of IndustryWeek's regular Production Pulse livestream series, we invited several experts to discuss what microgrids are, why they're growing and what to expect in the near term. Speakers were: Jana Gerber, president of Schneider Electric's North American microgrid business Rod Walton, managing editor of Microgrid Knowledge, part of IndustryWeek's parent company Endeavor Business Media  David Paganie, content director for the upcoming Microgrid Knowledge Conference

With last week's election of Donald J. Trump to a second term in the White House, the big question for the manufacturing community is what to expect in trade policy. On the campaign trail, Trump made higher tariffs, especially in Chinese imports, a centerpiece of his agenda. Supply chain and legal experts say companies should prepare for a different trade environment, but don't try to be clever or overreact. Back in 2018, some companies tried to avoid the first round of Trump tariffs by trying to hide the country of origin of their goods. It didn't go well for them. So, be skeptical about vendor claims that they can insulate you from trade changes. But, at the same time, don't expect things to change too quickly or spend wildly to build up inventory in expectations of higher prices. That strategy often leads to higher costs and rarely saves much in the long run. Sharing these insights and others, as part of IndustryWeek's regular Production Pulse livestream were: Jeremy Tancredi, partner in West Monroe's supply chain practice Dan Swartz, international tax services principal, Crowe Gregory Husisian, partner at Foley & Lardner LLP Jill Jusko, IndustryWeek's executive editor

Even if you're listening to this after Halloween, please enjoy this special treat of a group discussion around all things candy. Where does our candy come from? What are people eating these days? Why do kids like gummy candy instead of recognizing that chocolate is the only thing worth eating?  Most importantly, what's coming up from food manufacturers in the future? What great product will add inches to our waistlines in 2025? The ask and answer some of these questions are: Linda Becker, editor-in-chief of Automatic Merchandizer and Vending Market Watch, titles that send her to vending machine and convenience store trade shows every year, candy-centric events at which companies share what's coming up in the world of sugar Andy Hanacek, senior editor of Food Processing, a title that covers food manufacturers Robert Schoenberger, editor-in-chief of IndustryWeek who does consider peanut M&Ms to be a salad

In advance of MFG Day on Friday, Oct. 4, 2024, a panel of manufacturing publication editors and a representative of The Manufacturing Institute discussed how the industry is doing in its attempt to win over a new generation of young people. Attracting skilled and unskilled workers to factories remains difficult, despite a growing number of people saying technical fields provide young people with a great alternative to college. Discussing these issues were: Jen White, director of student engagement at The Manufacturing Institute, who spoke about the history of MFG Day and what businesses are doing this year Traci Purdum, editor-in-chief of Chemical Processing, who discussed on ongoing series of stories her staff is writing about preparing the workforce for the future in the process industries Andrea Corona, senior editor at Pharma Manufacturing, who discussed how high-tech producers are facing challenges Geert De Lombaerde, editor-at-large for IndustryWeek parent company Endeavor Business Media, who discussed the Perceptions of the Trades research study that shows parents and young people more interested in skilled trades, but not as much in manufacturing skilled trades Rehana Begg, editor-in-chief of Machine Design, who discussed how equipment producers are rethinking controls and machine interfaces to make their easier to use and more familiar to younger workers (touchscreens replacing dials, for example) Moderator Robert Schoenberger, editor-in-chief of IndustryWeek

Politics, whether we like them or not, weigh heavy on manufacturing's future. In case you haven't heard, it is an election year! Which means, global trade, regulations, immigration, national security and taxation will all be part of the national discourse, and all of those topics touch on manufacturing in one way or another. During this podcast, we will share a discussion courtesy of our sister brand, IndustryWeek, as part of their livestream program, Production Pulse. The broadcast features insights from Pharma Manufacturing's chief content director Karen Langhauser as well as from editors on Machine Design and Food Processing.

“You can never have too much education.” - Per SjofersPer Sjofors, aka “The Price Whisperer”, is the Founder of Sjofors & Partners.Pricing has always been an interest area for Per. As a serial entrepreneur, running companies in Europe and the US, he did pricing experiences. Some of these worked spectacularly well, some did not work at all. As a result, Per founded his company out of his frustration that what business schools teach about pricing is too abstract, and too academic for a business executive to act on. Likewise with books about pricing. Consequently, he set out to make pricing practical and actionable, and this stems from a deep understanding of how the 4 Ps of Marketing interact and how changes in one of the Ps affect Price. Since then, he has been at the forefront as a pricing thought leader, taking a very different view on everything pricing. Per is an author of “The Price Whisperer - A Holist Approach to Pricing Power” and is a sought-after speaker for a variety of conferences and business circuits.Per is a member of the Forbes Magazine Business Council, a member of the C-Suite Network, appears regularly on podcasts and business radio shows, and gets quoted regularly in the financial press, including Inc Magazine, The Street, Fortune Magazine, Industry Week, Business Insider and the Financial Times. His new book “The Price Whisperer - A Holistic Approach to Pricing Power” is available on Amazon here: https://amzn.to/3nX1BJmPrior to founding his own company, Sjofors & Partners, Per had more than 25 years of CEO experience, driving companies to rapid, profitable growth, where he gained an appreciation for the importance of optimal pricing. In this episode, Galen talks with Tetsuya Nakagawa, CEO and Co-Founder of Castagra Products, who discusses his entrepreneurial journey and how Castagra Products came to be. They initially won a competition by Dragon's Den, and though the product wasn't initially meant for roofing, they eventually moved in that direction after winning a stadium project contract over 42 other companies. Tats emphasizes the importance of problem-solving and evaluating situations to determine the best course of action for customers. He believes that innovation is always temporary and continues to look for ways to improve their products and make things slightly better for everyone. When it comes to scaling a business, Tats suggests addressing three key areas: Demand generation, operations, and mitigating weaknesses. The key to success is to constantly learn, adapt, and evolve. Who's The Guest? Co-Founder and CEO of Castagra Products, a manufacturer of sustainable roof coatings, is Tatsuya Nakagawa. Numerous renowned businesses like General Mills, Tyson Foods, the NFL, MLB, and McDonald's, use the Ecodur roof coating from Castagra. The reality television program Dragons' Den selected Ecodur as the best "Greenvention." Tats has launched hundreds of goods and services over the past 20 years, co-authored a book titled Overcoming Inventoritis: The Silent Killer of Innovation (forward by Steve Wozniak, Co-Founder of Apple), and delivered speeches to a range of professional organizations, including the Canadian Bar Association, the American Chamber of Commerce, and the International Internet Marketing Association. He's also written articles for Fast Company, Construction Today, and Industry Week, and has been quoted on CBS News, Global TV, The Globe and Mail, and BC Business. Highlights Castagra's sustainable roof coating was born from a previous invention by Peter, who worked with Tats in the past. They saw the potential and decided to relaunch the product Castagra targeted tough customers, such as multinational corporations, to prove their product's worth. The strategy worked, and they were able to win contracts against 42 other competing companies Tats believes that in order to lead in the construction materials industry, one must be fearless in introducing new products and ideas The biggest competition for innovation is often the resistance to change or the cost of switching from current practices Incremental innovation is easier to implement, but major innovations require understanding and quantifying the value for customers To be successful in business, it's important to understand the customer's problems and their customers' dynamics Failure is inevitable, but it's important to learn from it and not be too arrogant Successful entrepreneurs know themselves well and understand the trade-offs at each phase of business To scale a business, it's important to address demand generation, operations, and weaknesses Entrepreneurship exposes weaknesses, but it's a great way to figure out what you need to work on and explore your potential The goal of leveling up is to explore the edges of what you're capable of and make a positive impact Episode Resources Connect with Galen M. Whether we like it or not, data rules our world today—you know it and your customers want it. Haven't you noticed that some customers are more informed on what they want when they make a tire purchase? That's because they're collecting data—any bits of information—that will ensure they are making a good investment. One way tire dealers are grasping their hands on more and more vehicle data is through digital vehicle inspections. While digital vehicle inspection can take on many different forms with a variety of equipment, one company that is leading the way in giving tire dealers data literally at their fingertips is Hunter Engineering. You've probably seen or heard of Hunter's Quick Check inspection equipment that takes tread depth and alignment measurements in seconds. To dig into the type of data Hunter's inspection equipment collects, new features it debuted this year and how it integrates with other equipment at the shop, we sat down with Pete Liebetreu, vice president of marketing at Hunter Engineering, during Industry Week in Las Vegas this year.
