A movie review podcast hosted by Jonathan Roberts. An SPH production

A film that was able to silence a group of chatty teens and get them to stop checking their phones? Yes, we are dealing with powerful stuff here. But which of this week's films has that level of power. Two films that return to familiar territory. First up is Guy Ritchie's return to London crime capers, The Gentlemen. The other is the genius new take on an old classic, Leigh Whannell's The Invisible Man. Hugh Grant expands his repertoire with some lengthy tales, while Elizabeth Moss thinks that something is there in the corner of the room. Back with a blast! Double Feature returns with the glittery violence of Birds of Prey and grimy tension of Uncut Gems. Jonathan Roberts reviews Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn as we get into one of the best superhero films seen for some time. Certainly the best Joker-related film for some time (Since The Dark Knight, we're saying). And for those who want to stay in, as many do these days, there's the Safdie Brothers' Netflix film Uncut Gems, starring the Independent Spirit Award-winning Adam Sandler. Not Oscar-winning. That one goes to The Joker. Well done, Joaquin. As always, thanks for listening. A quick one this week. A solo report on Bad Boys For Life, a film that has done far better than expected and has already had its sequel green lit. Will Smith and Martin Lawrence re-teaming as Mike and Marcus appears to have hit that magic formula (some might say not having Michael Bay direct helps). Jonathan Roberts, seemingly in the throws of cabin fever gives his review – free of Joker rants (for once). Thanks for listening. What are the Oscars thinking? We need answers. Aside from railing against the Academy Awards' glaring omissions, the Double Feature team of Jonathan Roberts, Cheow Sue-Ann and Joanne Soh review Greta Gerwig's astounding take on Little Women and want to know how a film that good does not warrant for a Best Director nod at the Academy Awards. This will also prompt another anti-Joker rant from Mr Roberts. He's cheerleading team #anyonebutJoker And then Joanne Soh explains why Robert Downey Jr's post-Marvel career has got off to a flying thud with Dolittle. 00.35: Little Women reviewed, Greta Gerwig defies the odds with the eighth version of the Louisa Mae Alcott classic. Saoirse Ronan wows us, we finally get why Timothee Chalamet sends the girls swooning – and all without the use of Shawn Mendes. 07.50: What's wrong with the Oscars 2020 nominations plus wishlists and predictions and a rant about why Lorene Scafaria's Hustlers is more deserving of Best Director than Todd Phillips' Joker. 22.10: Last and least, it's the Dolittle review. Are there any good awards shows? Are we reaching the tipping point for today's gong-giving productions? Me-OW! It's the end of the year and just as we were preparing our Best & Worst of 2019 list, we had a couple of late entrants into both categories. Before we get into what elevated and sank the mood in 2019 (they're not necessarily the worst films, we're just very disappointed), Jonathan Roberts and Cheow Sue-Ann delve into some current releases – Tom Hooper's take on Cats and Taika Waititi's boy-with-Hitler-as-a-best-friend war movie, Jojo Rabbit. Skip to theses times for the different segments. 01.00: Everything wrong with Tom Hooper's Cats – a film that has gone so wrong that it deserves to be seen. 10.40: Taika Waititi's Jojo Rabbit – a film so good it's effectively the best film of 2019 (according to Jonathan) 15.00: Best & Worst of 2019. Joker theories and a fight between two Fresh Princes. In this Double feature, Jonathan Roberts and Joanne Soh discuss Mr & Mr Smith – Will Smith now versus Will Smith then in Ang Lee's Gemini Man. Is the film any good and just as important, does it work in Ang Lee's chosen medium of High-Frame Rate? Does shooting in 120 frames per second instead of the regular 24 – take to audience into the action or does it look more like a test film for hi-def TVs in Courts? Before they get there, Todd Phillip's Joker is still haunting out minds with a mass of conspiracy theories regarding events in the film. Did we actually see Arthur Fleck's father in the film?
