As Australian Film month winds down we take a decided turn away from Crocodile Dundee and head south to Melbourne. Animal Kingdom is a cautionary tale about a family bonded together by crime until someone from the inside turns their film upside down. The first feature film of Director David Michod, who also wrote the screenplay, this is Australian filmmaking at its finest, albeit grittiest. Whilst it didn't do very well at the box office it was received in glowing terms by the critics and has since spawned an American Tv Series of the same name that lasted six seasons. An all-star Australian cast led by Joel Edgerton, Ben Mendelson and Jackie Weaver show what experts in their craft can do with a quality script and a Director that has complete faith in his actors. This was the movie that started Ben Mendelson's climb back into Hollywood and after this he would find himself in some of the biggest movies of the next decade.Jackie Weaver who plays the Matriarch of the family “Smurf” gets a very well-earned Oscar nomination and if it wasn't for such a stacked year she may have taken the top gong. This is a movie that lives within the realm of subtlety and there isn't a scene in the film that should be replaced. Haunting performances will ensure that Animal Kingdom will be forever known as one of the very best pieces of Australian cinema for all time. Please follow the Podcast and join our community at https://linktr.ee/borntowatchpodcast If you are looking to start a podcast and want a host or get guests to pipe in remotely, look no further than Riverside.fmClick the link below https://riverside.fm/?utm_campaign=campaign_1&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_source=rewardful&via=matthew-white

Career Q&A with Topher Grace. Moderated by Bruce Fretts, Closer Weekly. Acclaimed actor Topher Grace first caught the attention of audiences as one of the stars of the iconic television series, That ‘70s Show, before going on to make his mark on the big screen in numerous films. Topher currently appears in the Sony Pictures Classics drama, Truth, opposite Robert Redford, Cate Blanchett, Dennis Quaid and Elisabeth Moss. The film tells the true story of a group of journalists – with Topher portraying rebellious researcher, ‘Mike Smith’ – who uncover a conspiracy that would bring down President George W. Bush’s presidency. The film will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. Topher is currently in production starring alongside Brad Pitt in the upcoming Netflix black comedy, War Machine, in which he plays a civilian media adviser to Pitt’s four-star U.S. military general trying to win the war in Afghanistan. Based on Michael Hastings’ book, “The Operators: The Wild and Terrifying Inside Story of America’s War in Afghanistan,” and directed by David Michod, the film is scheduled to debut in 2016. Topher has also made the move behind the camera and recently completed production as producer and star of the romantic musical comedy, One Shot, directed by Isaac Rentz. The film features Anne Heche and Taye Diggs and follows a failed Broadway singer who now works as a production manager who must save opening night by wrangling his eccentric cast and crew. On screen he’s also wrapped on the supernatural thriller, Home, expected for release by Universal in 2016. On the big screen, Topher won the National Board of Review award for Breakthrough Performance by an Actor, as well as a New York Film Critics award, for his roles in In Good Company and P.S. in 2004. As a member of the ensemble cast in Steven Soderbergh’s Traffic, he also won a Screen Actors Guild Award in 2001. Additional film credits include Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar; Gary Marshall’s ensemble, Valentine’s Day, opposite Anne Hathaway, Bradley Cooper, Jamie Foxx and others; Sam Raimi’s Spiderman 3; Robert Luketic’s Win a Date With Tad Hamilton; Mike Newell’s Mona Lisa Smile, opposite Julia Roberts; and Soderbergh’s Ocean’s Eleven and Ocean’s Twelve among many other memorable roles including, most recently, American Ultra, opposite Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart. On the small screen, along with That ‘70s Show, he has also appeared in Curtis Hanson’s Golden Globe winning TV film, Too Big to Fail, for HBO. He also appeared in The Beauty Inside, a 2012 social film developed by Intel and Toshiba. Directed by Drake Doremus and co-starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead, the film is broken up into six filmed episodes interspersed with interactive storytelling that all takes place on the main character's Facebook timeline. Topher won a Daytime Emmy in the category of Outstanding New Approaches - Original Daytime Program or Series. In 2014, Topher made his Off-Broadway debut in Paul Weitz’ acclaimed Lonely, I’m Not, opposite Olivia Thirlby, for Second Stage. Topher grew up in Darien, Connecticut and currently resides in Los Angeles, California.

Emmy Award-winning composer, Nicholas Britell, is enjoying a moment right now. The Oscar-nominated talent behind the scores of films like “Moonlight,” “If Beale Street Could Talk” and “Vice” and television series like “Succession” is as in-demand as they come, an artist who approaches film music composition in incredibly original ways, with some of our greatest contemporary filmmakers lining up to collaborate with him.For Netflix, Britell is behind the haunting, eerily timeless melodies of David Michod’s “The King,” a story taken in part from William Shakespeare’s “Henriad” series of plays and focused on the rise of King Henry V. Like all of Britell’s work, the score is a piece of its own within the film, the music seemingly sprouting from the very tones and atmospheres rendered by Michod and his team behind the camera. In this week’s episode of “The Call Sheet,” Britell dives into his love of hip hop, his use of unconventional instruments for the score of “The King," and the importance of trusting your instincts.

After winning four Oscars last year, Netflix is betting even bigger this year with special theatrical runs and awards handling for a whopping 10 films. Martin Scorsese's pricey mob picture, The Irishman, might be the most expensive bet, but there are plenty of other contenders in the Netflix portfolio, including films from Steven Soderbergh, David Michod, Fernando Meirelles, and Noah Baumbach, featuring a large truckload of Oscar-winning actors. Netflix is giving all these prominent films a longer exclusive run in theaters (usually, films just appear on Netflix, like everything else). But this year, with more competition coming and stalled-out subscriber numbers, the stakes are bigger than ever for Netflix this Oscar season. We'll have plenty to watch for beyond just a batch of extremely promising movies. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/davidlbloom/support

Welcome back from your Memorial Day weekend, everyone: We return with a piping hot show, and man, do we ever have a lot to fit in. Grierson just got back from Cannes, so we talk about the major takeaways from the festival. Then we dig into the Netflix original film "War Machine," directed by "Animal Kingdom"'s David Michod and starring Brad Pitt, based off a book by the late journalist Michael Hastings. But that's just getting warmed up. We also have to wrap our minds around "Baywatch," and then Will has to explain what exactly a FIFTH "Pirates of the Caribbean" sequel might have to offer. It's smoother sailing, so to speak, in our Reboot section, in which we discuss David Gordon Green's 2000 debut film "George Washington." With Francine Stock Francine talks to director David Michod about War Machine, his big budget satire on the U.S. military starring Brad Pitt, which is having its premiere on-line. He tells Francine why he really doesn't mind that it's only playing in a handful of cinemas. The debate about big screen versus small screen raged this year at the Cannes film festival when the logo of an on-line film and TV company was booed at a premiere. Film buyer Clare Binns and critic Tim Robey tell Francine if they joined in the booing. Rungano Nyoni was born in Zambia and raised in Wales. Her debut feature, I Am Not A Witch, premiered at Cannes, and she reveals what it was like to get the red carpet treatment. Heavy drinking, existential malaise and deadpan humour characterise the films of director Aki Kaurismaki. Critic Larushka Ivan-Zadeh tells us five things we should know about the Finnish auteur.
