The guest host for today's show is Brad Bannon. Brad runs Bannon Communications Research, a polling, message development and media firm which helps labor unions, progressive issue groups and Democratic candidates win public affairs and political campaigns. His show, 'Deadline D.C. with Brad Bannon,' airs every Monday from 3-4pm ET. Brad is first joined by Tara Devlin, the host of the podcast, 'TARABUSTER.' The two talk about the presidential abuse of power by Donald Trump, along with his unelected sidekick, Elon Musk. They also discuss Trump's undemocratic portrayal of himself as a King on social media. Finally, they explore how Democrats can find their backbone and fight back against Trump's attacks on the country. Then, Brad is joined by award-winning journalist, author, and Podcast host, Brian J. Karem. The pair discusses Brian's experience as a White House correspondent during both the first and second Trump administrations, his observations on what has changed, and the Associated Press' battle with Trump over access to the White House. It's my final episode as your host (but not of the show!) and I recorded this interview with Karem way back in Spring but, as I was recording it, knew I wanted to sign out with this podcast, so have held it back all this time. It was a tour de force of patience! Karem and I discuss the importance of raising politically and philosophically engaged children and how home education is the perfect environment for these subjects. We talk about the who, what, how, why and when of incorporating Politics and Philosophy, and then more widely about home education as an act of love, freedom and defiance. It's a wonderful episode for me to end my time as your host and do stay listening out for next week's episode where I'll be introducing your new host and we'll share her vision for the future of the podcast!

Many of the hundreds of thousands of Syrians who immigrated to the US beginning in the 1870s worked as peddlers. Men were able to transgress Syrian norms related to marriage practices while they were traveling, while Syrian women accessed more economic autonomy though their participation in peddling networks. In Possible Histories: Arab Americans and the Queer Ecology of Peddling (U California Press, 2023), Charlotte Karem Albrecht explores this peddling economy of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as a site for revealing how dominant ideas about sexuality are imbricated in Arab American racial histories. Karem Albrecht marshals a queer affective approach to community and family history to show how Syrian immigrant peddlers and their interdependent networks of labor and care appeared in interconnected discourses of modernity, sexuality, gender, class, and race. Possible Histories conceptualizes this profession, and its place in narratives of Arab American history, as a "queer ecology" of laboring practices, intimacies, and knowledge production. This book ultimately proposes a new understanding of the long arm of Arab American history that puts sexuality and gender at the heart of ways of navigating US racial systems. Charlotte Karem Albrecht is Associate Professor of American Culture and Women's and Gender Studies at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, where she is also a core faculty member for the Arab and Muslim American Studies program. The PAC-12 imploded over the weekend with 8 of the 12 teams opting to walk away from the conference. As a former PAC 12 player, Ryan dives into the conferences struggles. The suspension of RB Alvin Kamara have the Saints looking for help to start the season. On Monday, they brought in Karem Hunt and it looks like they will be signing the veteran running back. The Bears sign DE Yannick Ngakoue to a one year deal to help get pressure on the QB. Adding to an already productive offseason by the Bears front office. Ryan continues to evaluate each teams offseason around the league, focusing today on the Seahawks and 49ers.

Uncertain as to whether he'd ever play PSA squash again, Karem Abdel Gawad let it be known via his Optasia Championship victory that he's well on his way back to the form that saw him win the World Championship and reach world #1 in 2017. Karem talks about his Optasia success, and the brutal heel injury and the complicated journey back to playing squash again. Great chat with the baby-faced assassin. Starting in the late 1800s, a group of Syrian immigrants settled in America. Many of them took up peddling as a career. When American newspapers described these peddlers, it was often in derogatory ways—and through terms of queerness. This week, Dr. Charlotte Karem Albrecht joins Jonathan to explore this moment in Arab American history, how it's been remembered, and what it reveals about “the sexual, racial, and gender machinery of American society.” A note from Team JVN: In this episode, Dr. Karem Albrecht and Jonathan discuss how Arabs and Arab Americans were understood by white Americans. As part of that discussion, we reference various historical documents that include anti-Arab and anti-Semitic language. If you'd like to pre-screen those moments, you can find them in the transcript at jonathanvanness.com. Charlotte Karem Albrecht is an Assistant Professor of American Culture and Women's and Gender Studies at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, where she is also a core faculty member in the Arab and Muslim American Studies program. She is also an avid lover of plants and mushrooms and her five fur babies. You can follow Charlotte on Twitter and Instagram @CKaremAlbrecht. You can learn more about her work at www.charlotteka.com. We talk with Kevin (Karem's husband from episode 5). He talks in depth about male infertility and their journey with IVF. He gives us insight into the stigma of infertility as well as how he handled the journey with his wife's help. We also have him tell us the story of the birth of their daughter. He also talks about how postpartum and adjusting to fatherhood was for him! Feel free to contact Kevin through his Instagram if you have any questions about his journey: @kevlambo
Most of us learned of Brian Karem through his tough questions from the White House Press Briefing Room during the former administration. His willingness to stand up to the authoritarian regime and ask important questions prompted me to invite him on this program a few times. Now he's become one of my favorite guests. He was here last month to talk about his new book, "Free the Press," and he told us he was headed to Ukraine. Now he's back, and I want to hear all about it. But before I had the chance to invite him, I saw him promoting a new film-- HIS new film, "Six Feet Apart" that's just premiering on Amazon's Prime Video. I just finished watching it and it was everything I expected from Mr. Karem- insightful while at the same time very personal, funny and charming. So we've got lots to talk about today...

As we approach the weekend, the breaking news stories keep coming. They really started yesterday, with news about the COVID booster shot. Then the leaks of the Arizona election fraudit draft report which is set for release about an hour before showtime today. What we do know is that Joe Biden, indeed, won Arizona, and it only cost the state 6 MILLION DOLLARS for that result. And Trump is still lying. Then there are the House votes on everything from codifying Roe v Wade to the National Defense Authorization Act and sending Israel another billion dollars for their iron dome missile defense system and more. Oh, and the run up to Monday's scheduled vote on the BIF or hard infrastructure bill, while the reconciliation package-which is supposed to go hand-in-hand with the BIF- is nowhere ready for a vote. There's more, and we'll review some of it. We'll wrap up the week with another visit from White House correspondent Brian Karem. He was the WH correspondent for Playboy, but Playboy is gone. Who knew? He's now penning a weekly column for Salon. com, and continues hosting his own podcast, "Just Ask the Question" at justaskthequestion.com. Yesterday marked one year since the former guy took a question from Brian in the WH briefing room. Karem asked "Regardless of the outcome, will you guarantee a peaceful transition of power?" The rest, as they say, is history.
