Wind is hard to do sound design for.... really hard.  What can sound like a huge powerful gust, when you are out in the world with a microphone, is often a major let down when you get back to the studio to listen. So I jumped at the chance to talk with the Twisters sound team to learn how they tackled the winds in this tornado focused film. Supervising sound editors Bjorn Schroeder & Al Nelson are joined by re-recording mixers Chris Boyes & Pete Horner, as well as assistant supervising sound editor Sarah Shaw, to break down how they designed the swirling wind (and lots more!) in this blockbuster adventure film. The Health Advocates

In this special Halloween episode of The Health Advocates, we're diving into some spine-chilling experiences in the health care system. Our guests open up about their scariest moments — from misdiagnoses and panic attacks in MRI machines to doctors dismissing their pain. But it's not all fright! They share how these tough experiences helped them become stronger self-advocates, turning fear into resilience. Among the highlights in this episode: 01:34: Shelley Fritz, Patient-Centered Engagement and Insights Manager at GHLF, describes her experience on Easter weekend in 2017, when she started experiencing severe chest pain and difficulty breathing 06:47: Shelley shares that she was diagnosed with bilateral pulmonary embolisms (blood clots in both lungs) — a potentially fatal condition and recalls how a nurse, unaware of her diagnosis, carelessly lifted her, worsening her pain. Shelley had to advocate for different pain management, eventually receiving proper treatment after several hours 11:26: Sarah Shaw, Associate Director of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Community Outreach at GHLF, shares how her doctor's frustration with her lack of progress led to a shocking comment, labeling her a “problem patient.” Sarah felt blamed for not responding to treatments but decided to find a new doctor who would advocate for her and work collaboratively on her treatment plan 15:23: Sarah reflects on her positive experience with her new doctor, who reassures her that “the treatment failed you, not the other way around,” a supportive approach that transformed her journey, emphasizing the importance of finding a doctor who listens and treats patients as partners in their care 18:53: Zoe Rothblatt, Director of Community Outreach at GHLF, shares her own story of feeling dismissed by a dermatologist who kept her waiting for over two hours, only to rush through the appointment and offer unsolicited advice on her autoimmune treatment, making her feel uncomfortable and disregarded 21:59: Zoe reflects on the lessons learned: the importance of trusting her instincts, finding providers who respect her time, and ensuring she feels comfortable speaking up during appointments 26:44: JP Summers, Senior Patient Advocate and Community Outreach Manager at GHLF, describes the panic attack she experienced while in the MRI machine due to severe claustrophobia. This led her to advocate for an open MRI despite initial insurance denials, highlighting how crucial it is to speak up for her needs in challenging health care situations 32:54: Zoe thanks JP for sharing her story, acknowledging the anxiety diagnostic tests can trigger for chronic illness patients, and underscores the importance of knowing there are often alternatives available 36:19: What our hosts learned from this episode Contact Our Hosts Steven Newmark, Chief of Policy at GHLF: snewmark@ghlf.org Zoe Rothblatt, Director of Community Outreach at GHLF: zrothblatt@ghlf.org A podcast episode produced by Ben Blanc, Associate Director, Digital Production and Engagement at GHLF. Today, we celebrate Group: Halloween! Brian: Coming up is the song that we've been covering called ,The Monster Mash, and it's a graveyard smash and its groooooovy!  *Cover of The Monster Mash plays* Nancy: Next, we have a spooky sound reel by San Diego. Listen in as we hear Zombies and Ghosts. Hit it, San Diego!  *growling and moaning heard with footsteps. A door creaks open. Chains are heard, followed by ghostly moans and zombie noises* Eric: Up next, we present a special guest named, Jack. This man knows a lot about bats and he's going to tell us all about it. Take it away, Jack! Jack: Boo! *laughter* Got you, didn't I? I know that Halloween is coming soon, but there's a classic Halloween animal that's probably one of the most misunderstood. Today, I'm going to tell you all about bats, but remember, don't listen to the scary myths about them but before we can get started let me tell you something here. It's our job- no, our duty to dispel the popular notion about them. How's that going to help? Well, let's get started here.  Bats have good eyesight. There's never a bat that's blind. Bats aren't really scary. The reality is they're shy and gentle creatures. They're harmless! Bats do hang by their feet. How do they do that? Bats feet hook backwards. Their toe claws are hooked so they can hang upside down while they sleep! All bats have an amazing technique called echolocation. Come on, say it with me! Echo...lo... cation! Well, let me show you how it works. When he makes a sound, like a high-pitched squeak, the sound bounces off an object and the sound comes back to the ear. To let them sense their surroundings it in fact they can detect objects as thin as a human hair in total darkness.  A little brown bat can eat over 600 mosquitos in an hour! Which makes it a less itchy place here. Goodbye bug spray, hello bats! Did you know that some bats fly South for the winter? and speaking of which- from Mexico all the way to South America- The Vampire Bat! The most misunderstood bad in the world. But don't worry, vampire bats don't get blood from people. *buzzer sound* It's just not true. Vampire bats don't get blood from people at all. See, they prefer mammals and birds native to their environments. Did you know there are about 1,100 different kinds of bats in the world! And they're all so different! but the biggest ones are the great Indian Flying Fox and the Gold Crown Fruit bat. It's not how you look, it's who you are. Bats are the good guys! They're our friends. *Outro music by Artbeat Radio staff*  We hope you enjoyed this episode of Artbeat Radio. For more information, please go to our website. Ableartswork.org. You're listening to Artbeat Radio, a program of Able ARTS Work. *Music plays  (Matthew) Alright! Do it!  (Jonathon) Hello everyone and welcome to Art Beat Radio.  (Stephanie) This week's episode will be featuring students from the Music Literacy and Music Studio classes at Able Arts Work San Diego.  (Start background music)  (Liam) You may be asking yourself, ‘what is music literacy?'  (Liam) Basically, music literacy is how to read, write, and understand music.  (Claire) We start class with music appreciation.  (Santiago) We listen to a song carefully and explore the emotions it makes us feel.  (Liam) Doing music appreciation teaches us how to explore our emotions because songs can have more than one emotion.  (Jonathon) Mixing major and minor chords can give us a complex feeling like bittersweet.  (Stephanie) If you want to be literate in music, first you need to learn the musical alphabet. The musical alphabet has 7 letters.   (Sam) A, B, C, D, E, F, and G.  (Jonathon) Sometimes a note can be sharp.  (Claire) That means the note goes up.  (Stephanie) Sometimes a note can be flat.  (Santiago) That means the note goes down.  (Liam) You can take notes and put them together to make chords.  (Stephanie) Every basic chord is a triad – three notes played together.  (Stephanie) We have learned that in any key, you can make major chords, minor chords, and diminished chords.  (Santiago) Major chords can make us feel happy, calm, good, or bright.  (Claire) Minor chords can make us feel tense, dark, down, or sad.  (Jonathon) Diminished chords are even more tense than minor chords.  (Liam) After a few weeks, we used all of this knowledge to start writing our own song together.  (Stephanie) To come up with a chord progression, we started with the I chord, then experimented with other chord numbers until we came up with something that sounded good.  (Jonathon) For the verse, we wrote a chord progression that goes I to iii to vii to I.  (Liam) For the chorus we wrote a chord progression that goes V to vi to vii to ii. When the chorus repeats, we replace the ii chord with a IV chord.  (Stephanie) Next, we experimented using notes from the chord triads to write a melody. Once we had our chord progression and melody, we listened to it carefully to figure out how the music made us feel.  (Santiago) We chose one emotion to focus on with our lyrics.  (Liam) We chose to focus on heartbreak because we agreed that the music sounded bittersweet.  (Claire) Now we were ready to start writing the lyrics.   (Jonathon) We used a rhyming dictionary and a thesaurus to help us craft the lyrics.  (Santiago) To capture the bittersweet emotion of the music, we focused on the bitter in the verses, and on the sweet in the chorus.  (Stephanie) Once we had the lyrics, we started choosing the instruments we wanted for our backing track and writing those parts in Logic.  (Jonathon) Do you want to hear a preview of our song right now?  (Stephanie) Hi, my name is Stephanie J. Monis. My favorite artist is Taylor Swift because I love her music and she is a songwriter. What I want to learn in this class is I want to put my songs and projects together so I can have some finished songs.  (Sarah) Hi, my name is Sarah Shaw. My favorite recording is Demi Lovato. The thing I'm most excited about in Music Studio class is recording the song I wrote. The song I want to record from my song book is called “All Eyes On Me”.  (Kaitlyn) My name is Kaitlyn Johanson. My favorite song artists are Harry Styles “As It Was” and David Bowie “Star Man”. My favorite recording artists are Kelly Clarkson and Bentley Brown. I'm most excited to learn from studio class this semester recording my voice, reading, and singing.  (Claire Feth) My name is Claire Feth. My favorite recording artists is Celine Dion and Julie Andrews. I'm most excited to play my drums.  (Josh) (Singing and playing piano) Oh, check it out. Hug-a hug-a. Hug-a please, promise. Craig coming. Where's coming coming? Say, Craig!  (Max) Hi, my name is Max Lecanu-Fayet. My favorite recording artists are Matchbox 20 and Enrique Iglesias. The thing I am most excited to learn about in Music Studio is how to make music using the computer.    *Outro music by Artbeat Radio staff*  We hope you enjoyed this episode of Artbeat Radio. Description:This week's installment features the musical and poetic talents of Able Arts Work, San Diego's Service Users in their Collaborative Episode Who I Am Inside, A Tale as Old as Time.  The first piece Musical Poetry Collage was created in Music Therapy Community.  The students explored components of songs that sooth them and bring a sense of comfort.  Then, they each shared a favorite soothing song with their peers, processed verbally and selected two favorite lines that were synthesized into an original poem.  Finally, the students created an original meditative backing track using loops in Logic and recorded instruments.  If you listen carefully, you may hear familiar quotes from some of your favorite songs as well as Chinese instruments like a Dizi and Guzheng, electric and bass guitars, and an ocean disk.  The second piece is an original poem written by Service User, Sarah Shaw titled, Inside Wins.  Sarah is excited to share words that inspire others to see their full potential and embrace who they are inside.  We hope you enjoy listening and find inspiration of your own!

A few days before the eminent scholar Lance Cousins passed away in 2015, he revealed to one of his students, Sarah Shaw, that he had been working on a book on Buddhist meditation. After his death, with the permission of his family, Shaw found the manuscript on his desktop and prepared it for publication. The book, "Meditations of the Pali Tradition," is the first comprehensive exploration of meditation systems in Theravada Buddhism, and it offers an in-depth analysis of the ritual, somatic, and devotional aspects of Theravada practice that are often overlooked. In today's episode of Tricycle Talks, Tricycle's editor-in-chief, James Shaheen, sits down with Shaw to discuss a system of Buddhist meditation known as the jhanas, a strain of Buddhist mysticism called Tantric Theravada, and the underappreciated role of joy in meditative practice.

Diseases don't discriminate; anyone can get one or suffer from a chronic illness. But they do disproportionately affect BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ communities. In this episode, Sarah Shaw, BIPOC Outreach Manager at Global Healthy Living Foundation, describes what it's like being a Queer, Black woman living with chronic migraine, endometriosis, and anxiety and how health care providers must improve interaction with these communities. “Maybe if there have been more representation showing that Queer people get migraine. Black, Indigenous, and People of Color get migraine. Men, Women, Trans, and Non-Binary folks get migraine. If that representation had been there, maybe they would have jumped to a migraine conclusion diagnosis first, instead of what I was pushed on, which was, 'Oh, it's just anxiety or stress,' when I was seeking answers,” says Sarah. A timely essay collection on the development and influence of secular expressions of Buddhism in the West and beyond. How do secular values impact Buddhism in the modern world? What versions of Buddhism are being transmitted to the West? Is it possible to know whether an interpretation of the Buddha's words is correct? In this new essay collection, opposing ideas that often define Buddhist communities—secular versus religious, modern versus traditional, Western versus Eastern—are unpacked and critically examined. These reflections by contemporary scholars and practitioners reveal the dynamic process of reinterpreting and reimagining Buddhism in secular contexts, from the mindfulness movement to Buddhist shrine displays in museums, to whether rebirth is an essential belief. Richard Payne's edited collection Secularizing Buddhism: New Perspectives on a Dynamic Tradition (Shambhala, 2021) explores a wide range of modern understandings of Buddhism—whether it is considered a religion, philosophy, or lifestyle choice—and questions if secular Buddhism is purely a Western invention, offering a timely contribution to an ever-evolving discussion. Podcast: This week on the show we feature a pre-recorded conversation with Richard Payne, editor and contributor to the 2021 Shambhala publication, Secularizing Buddhism: New Perspectives on a Dynamic Tradition. This collection of essays explores how secular values impact Buddhism in the modern world, what versions of Buddhism are actually being transmitted to the West, whether it is possible to know if a given interpretation of the Buddha's words is correct, and whether "Secular Buddhism" is purely a Western invention. Contributors to this volume include Bhikkhu Bodhi, Kate Crosby, Gil Fronsdal, Kathleen Gregory, Funie Hsu, Roger R. Jackson, Charles B. Jones, David L. McMahan, Richard K. Payne, Ron Purser, Sarah Shaw, Philippe Turenne, and Pamela D. Winfield. Richard K. Payne is the Yehan Numata Professor of Japanese Buddhist Studies at the Institute of Buddhist Studies in Berkeley, California. During his dissertation research into tantric fire ritual (Homa) on Mt. Koya in Japan, he also completed training as a Shingon priest (ajari). Clustering around his core research program on tantric ritual are broader theoretical concerns about the conduct of such research. This includes the study of ritual across cultural boundaries and over long durations, and the use of language in tantric Buddhist ritual. Sarah Shaw is the CEO of Sarah Shaw Consulting. She started her career as a costume designer for Hollywood movies, went on to build several businesses and sold millions of dollars' worth of products including the Sarah Shaw Handbag which got a lot of press, TV and movie placements. The bag is sold in over 1,200 stores and over 70 of the world's most famous celebrities have worn or carried her products. Within a year Sarah Shaw Handbags could be found on the pages of InStyle, Oprah, People, Lucky and Marie Claire magazines.  Sarah provides private one-on-one coaching packages that give entrepreneurs the overall know-how to create and launch a product as well strategies she used to grow her own million-dollar company. One of her special areas of coaching is teaching clients how to get their products into the hands of celebrities and then leveraging their celebrity clientele for press and sales. He experience in production and entertainment has lent itself to unique approaches to packaging, marketing, distribution and public relations.  Sarah also founded Entreprenette, a company through which she coaches female entrepreneurs through the process of taking their fashion, home, lifestyle or accessory product ideas from concept to reality.  Period in full-time business  Sarah started her first company in 1994 but has been in full-time self-employment since 1998.  Core revenue streams  Sarah's current business is Sarah Shaw Consulting through which she works with entrepreneurs to help them launch their product-based companies. She works with them for 6+ months in building their businesses.  Starting the consulting business  Sarah started Sarah Shaw Consulting in 2009.  Starting out in business  After college, Sarah started working in the film business doing costumes for movies. She never thought of entrepreneurship back then. In 1994, she started a clothing company that made clothes for movies. She partnered with a fashion designer and manufacturer who produced the clothes for her.  Her second business was buying wardrobe trailers and renting them to the film business. She later got the idea for a handbag in 1997. She made the bags, sold them, and they took off very well in the market. The handbag was taken up by 20 to 30 stores, and in 1998 she got a big order from Anthropologie, which drove her to quit her job as a costume designer.  Role of a costume designer in Hollywood  Sarah says costumes are the visual aspect of a movie and are therefore very critical in developing a character in the audience's eye. She was a costume supervisor working under costume designers and some of her roles included managing the budgets and making sure all the costumes were on set when needed. She also performed a lot of other tasks and worked a minimum of 12 hours a day.  Take away from the costume supervisor job  The costume supervisor job enabled her to discover her tenacity and willingness to succeed. She learnt how to manage budgets, how not to take no for an answer, and how to put her vision to paper in the best way possible. All that helped her as she started her entrepreneurial journey.  Starting the handbag company and growing it  When she was first creating the handbags, she used to create rough designs and create samples. She consulted her former business partner in the previous clothing company she had, and he connected her to the people who eventually helped her get the first order from Anthropologie.  She had initially contracted a family that sewed the bags for her but she later started using a factory she knew to do the sewing in mass. At that point, she had a small office where she managed all the operations from. She eventually got orders from Nordstrom stores and other boutiques across the US.   Sarah did a lot of cold calling and sometimes mailed out her printed catalogue to get new buyers. Later on, she started sending out the handbag to celebrities. When the celebrities were photographed...
