How Men Can Help Women

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 18, 2021 49:48

In this episode, we host an honest discussion about the responsibility on men when it comes to the unacceptable abuse suffered by women. Earlier this year, the horrific murder of Sarah Everard led to a huge outcry from women who have understandably had enough of the abuse they've suffered at the hands of men. This has also given rise to an unprecedented number of women bravely coming forward to talk about their experiences of abuse from men, from the everyday catcalling that goes on in the streets, to physical and sexual attacks. A line has been drawn in the sand, so we wanted to understand what men can do to help make sure that abuse against women becomes a thing of the past. To help us work all that out, we're joined by three excellent guests: Social psychologist Professor Russell Luyt, head of Human Sciences at the University of Greenwich, and co-author of Masculine Power and Gender Equality: Masculinities as Change Agents (Springer, £87.50) Deniz Ugur, deputy director of the End Violence Against Women Coalition endviolenceagainstwomen.org.uk Emma Kay – the founder of the WalkSafe app, https://www.walksafe.io To find out more about this subject, you can read Healthy For Men in the latest issue of healthy magazine, on sale from June 19 at Holland and Barrett stores, and online at hollandandbarrett.com

The Power of Ketogenic Diets

The ketogenic diet has increasingly become a popular choice for athletes and weight loss, Keto is a very low carbohydrate and high-fat diet which changes the metabolism in the body from burning glucose for energy to burning fat for energy. It’s currently a recognised treatment for intractable (drug-resistant) epilepsy, Glut 1 Deficiency and Pyruvate Dehydrogenase Deficiency. Increasingly the diet is being looked at in other neuro-metabolic conditions as well as Brain Cancer. We speak to Emma Williams MBE – Founder/Trustee and CEO of Matthews Friends, a charity specialising in growing the awareness and growth of a medical ketogenic diet. Emma’s son Matthew started having seizures at the age of 9 months. When Matthew was just 2 years old Emma found out about the Ketogenic Diet but when she asked Matthew’s neurologist to try the diet she was told that it didn’t work, it was disgusting and medication was the best option. Only when Matthew was 7 years old did she finally get the chance to get Matthew onto the diet thanks to the trial that Professor Helen Cross was carrying out at Great Ormond Street Hospital. Within 2 weeks of starting the diet Matthew’s seizures had reduced by 90% and within 8 months he was off all medication. Emma founded the charity Matthew’s Friends in 2004 to share her experiences with others, provide support and promote the use of the ketogenic diet for those suffering from intractable epilepsy. 2013 saw her awarded an MBE from Her Majesty the Queen for her services to Children with Epilepsy. Top Five Tips for Overcoming Anxiety - with hypnotherapist Tim Grimwade.

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 31, 2018 16:38

In this special bonus episode, we’ve dug through our archives and recalled this chat we had with, Tim Grimwade back in March this year.  You may remember Tim back from episode one of our podumentry series What is Anxiety? If you’re a new listener and are working your way through our back catalogue... Tim is a cognitive behavioural hypnotherapist. Now, I’m sure the first thing that comes to mind when you think hypnotist is stage hypnotism and an audience member fallen to the spell of a swinging pocket watch. I can assure you, however, what Tim does in his practice is not the case. Cognitive behavioural hypnotherapy is very much as it sounds, a variation of Cognitive behavioural therapy or you may know as CBT, a technique used by counsellors and psychologists. If you’re not too sure what cognitive behavioural therapy is, it is a way of approaching a patient's way of thinking, to help lead to changes in their emotions and behaviour. It's most commonly used to treat anxiety and depression, but can be useful for other mental and physical health problems such as phobias or addiction. Which is all very similar to how Tim uses his hypnotherapy techniques. In this special episode, Tim gives us a taster of some of the common obstacles he’s had to face when treating patients who suffer from anxiety and compiled 5 simple points which everyone can use to ground themselves during anxious moments. These include: Have you been doing negative self-hypnosis for years? What are your current coping strategies and could they be better? Engage with what drives you. Find your sense of purpose. Aim to be constantly aware of your changing feelings, thoughts and physical sensations. Begin on the path to positive hypnosis.   This episode is in partnership with Bounce Foods Host Tom RowleyAudio engineered and edited by Andy GreeningDirected by Andy Greening and Tom RowleySpecial thanks to Tim GrimwadePodcast artwork by Matt Ford and Andy GreeningHealthy For Men theme song by Premium BeatsOther music by Artlist Healthy For Men Podumentary is by Healthy For Men magazine which is published by River Group Content Limited 2018

We speak to our regular Healthy For Men contributor Joel Snape about his feature The Library of Action which is out now in the July/August 2018 issue of Healthy For Men magazine. In this bonus episode, Joel speaks of his top 5 health and fitness books to boost brain power and lead you to sporting success.  Five books mentioned in this episode: Iron War by Matt Fitzgerald If you don’t know how the 1989 Ironman World Championship ended, buy this(and avoid spoilers), then sprint through it. It’s a brilliant take on training theory, racing science and opposing mental approaches, shot through with the narrative of the greatest race ever run. Exemplary. Never Let Go by Dan John Renowned strength coach Dan John made his name as an all-American discus thrower. Here, he makes hard lifting simple – but not easy – with dozens of workouts, anecdotes and things that you’ll try once, weep, then try again. Front squat Tabatas? No thanks. Assault On Lake Casitas by Brad Alan Lewis A book about rowing in the 1980s doesn’t sound all that fascinating, but the way Lewis made his attack on the Olympics – by being kicked off the ‘official’ team and coming back to beat them – is astonishing. You’ll be back on the Concept2 in no time. Grit by Angela DuckworthTalent? Pfft. What you really need to get ahead is grit, according to author Duckworth. She now insists that her whole family are always doing one ‘hard thing’ to build success’s most important quality, after studying everyone from Navy SEALs to CEOs. Faster by Michael Hutchinson Written by a man who did (almost) everything in the pursuit of speed, this cyclist’s memoir deals with everything from the lactate system to laminar airflow in its discussion of how to improve one skill – and it’s full of motivation for anyone wanting gains in their own life. If you are a UK listener, you can read the full list of the 30 books in the latest issue of Healthy For Men magazine in your local Holland and Barrett or subscribe here.
