Tom Rowley runs the Backstory bookshop in Balham in South London. He was previously a journalist for The Telegraph and The Economist, which he describes as his dream job, but when the pandemic knocked everything sideways he decided it was time to reassess and follow his other dream of running a bookshop. As he puts it, though, he felt the pull of ink in his veins, and started publishing Backstory magazine, which allows him to dig into the stories behind the stories in the books that he loves, reflecting on the experience of reading and writing.

The Power of Ketogenic Diets

The ketogenic diet has increasingly become a popular choice for athletes and weight loss, Keto is a very low carbohydrate and high-fat diet which changes the metabolism in the body from burning glucose for energy to burning fat for energy. It’s currently a recognised treatment for intractable (drug-resistant) epilepsy, Glut 1 Deficiency and Pyruvate Dehydrogenase Deficiency. Increasingly the diet is being looked at in other neuro-metabolic conditions as well as Brain Cancer. We speak to Emma Williams MBE – Founder/Trustee and CEO of Matthews Friends, a charity specialising in growing the awareness and growth of a medical ketogenic diet. Emma’s son Matthew started having seizures at the age of 9 months. When Matthew was just 2 years old Emma found out about the Ketogenic Diet but when she asked Matthew’s neurologist to try the diet she was told that it didn’t work, it was disgusting and medication was the best option. Only when Matthew was 7 years old did she finally get the chance to get Matthew onto the diet thanks to the trial that Professor Helen Cross was carrying out at Great Ormond Street Hospital. Within 2 weeks of starting the diet Matthew’s seizures had reduced by 90% and within 8 months he was off all medication. Emma founded the charity Matthew’s Friends in 2004 to share her experiences with others, provide support and promote the use of the ketogenic diet for those suffering from intractable epilepsy. 2013 saw her awarded an MBE from Her Majesty the Queen for her services to Children with Epilepsy. It’s a brilliant take on training theory, racing science and opposing mental approaches, shot through with the narrative of the greatest race ever run. Exemplary. Never Let Go by Dan John Renowned strength coach Dan John made his name as an all-American discus thrower. Here, he makes hard lifting simple – but not easy – with dozens of workouts, anecdotes and things that you’ll try once, weep, then try again. Front squat Tabatas? No thanks. Assault On Lake Casitas by Brad Alan Lewis A book about rowing in the 1980s doesn’t sound all that fascinating, but the way Lewis made his attack on the Olympics – by being kicked off the ‘official’ team and coming back to beat them – is astonishing. You’ll be back on the Concept2 in no time. Grit by Angela DuckworthTalent? Pfft. What you really need to get ahead is grit, according to author Duckworth. She now insists that her whole family are always doing one ‘hard thing’ to build success’s most important quality, after studying everyone from Navy SEALs to CEOs. Faster by Michael Hutchinson Written by a man who did (almost) everything in the pursuit of speed, this cyclist’s memoir deals with everything from the lactate system to laminar airflow in its discussion of how to improve one skill – and it’s full of motivation for anyone wanting gains in their own life. Whilst making his film Tawai, Bruce lived with a tribe in Borneo called the Penan, who are one of the last true egalitarian societies on the planet. Bruce shares what he learnt from this tribe about mental health, and how we can better our living conditions to accommodate positive mental wellbeing. In 2008, Jonny Benjamin arrived at Waterloo Bridge to take his own life. Incredibly, a passer-by was able to connect with Jonny, enabling him to continue his life today. Jonny shares the full story with HFM and we learn how important the dialogue about mental health can be. He expands on this and the work he is doing to promote a better understanding of mental health in his memoir The Stranger on the Bridge We speak with a psychiatrist, a hypnotist, a sophrologist, and a life coach to understand how to overcome anxiety, and how to use it as a tool. Special thanks to all the guest involved: Alex Cupid, Tim Grimwade, Professor George Fieldman, Nicola Oldcroft, Nat Hawley, Tom Sellick, Dominique Antiglio, Michael Serwa, Bruce Parry and Jonny Benjamin. Without any forethought or preparation, Christopher Knight walked into the Maine woods in 1986 and lived there in complete solitude for the next 27 years, subsisting on what he was able to steal from local cabins. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll tell the story of the North Pond hermit, one man's attempt to divorce himself completely from civilization. We'll also look for coded messages in crosswords and puzzle over an ineffective snake. Intro: Disneyland's Matterhorn contains a basketball goal. Two tombstones in the Netherlands "hold hands" across a cemetery wall.
