Why does the British establishment seem so addicted to cover up? In 2024 alone we have seen the Post Office, Mohammed al Fayed, NHS and the blood scandal, Justin Welby and the Church involved in cover-ups. Why do we cover up so much in the UK? Today I explore some of the historical cover ups in British history from the Boer War to the Mau Mau rebellion in Kenya and the British cover up in India during partition. I also talk about the psychology of why we cover up. And I link it to power and money. I draw upon the work of Caroline Elkins and the Legacy of Violence, Prof Joy Schaverien and Boarding School Syndrome, CG Jung and Oliver Bullough's Butler to The World. Top British lawyer David Hooper has made a career out of standing up to the powerful and the wealthy, and so when Vanity Fair magazine needed someone to defend its groundbreaking 1995 expose of Mohamed Al Fayed - the first time sexual allegations about him were ever published - David was the natural choice. What happened next was extraordinary, as revealed by David to Phil in this special and exclusive interview. For two years Hooper faced a small army of private detectives, ex police, spin doctors and various other suspicious characters, all working for Fayed. There was an attempted entrapment, the suggestion of bribes being paid to serving police officers and endless pressure on witnesses. And then, after the tragedy in Paris, both sides withdrew from the case and Fayed was able to carry on - it is alleged - predating on women with little scrutiny for another quarter of a century. You can buy David's book, and all the books we feature on the podcast here, along with thousands of others...https://uk.bookshop.org/p/books/buying-silence-how-oligarchs-corporations-and-plutocrats-use-the-law-to-gag-their-critics-david-hooper/7539510?aid=12054&ean=9781785908316&***We now have a Thank You button (next to the 'three dots') for small donations that help support our work***Looking for the perfect gift for a special scandalous someone - or someone you'd like to get scandalous with? Media Watch 2024 Episode 34: Supermarket rip-offs; Some Help from Tony; Al Fayed exposed; Deadly clickbait.
The revelation of many sexual allegations against Mohamed Al-Fayed has shocked the UK. The former owner of Harrods, confidante of Princess Diana and friend of British high society has been accused of a litany of crimes and a decades-long career of harassment and abuse. Given that Princess Diana died whilst under the care of the Fayed family, many have asked if she knew about this aspect of his personality, whether anyone tried to warn her and if her life could have taken a better and safer direction after her divorce from (then) Prince Charles. Phil delves back into his own biography of Diana and looks for clues. Then the brilliant sports writer Leo McKinstry joins Phil to talk about the world of cricket in the 1930s-50s. Many consider this to be one of the most sedate and civilised of sports, but it was dominated during this time by some truly larger than life characters - none more so that England's Bill Edrich: war hero, notorious boozer, committed womaniser and life-long scourge of 'the establishment'. Around 200 women have come forward with accusations against the former boss of Harrods

He was the father of Dodi, who was killed alongside Princess Diana in 1997. Fayed died last year and this month the BBC has released a new investigation that portrays him in a very different light. Erica Gornall, director of “Al-Fayed: Predator at Harrods”, and Henry Porter, former UK editor of Vanity Fair, discuss the story. The US election is now just week away and the competition for viewers among the TV networks is ferocious. CNN – led by its British boss Mark Thompson - thinks they may have a secret weapon for Saturday nights; a US version of “Have I Got News For You”. Jimmy Mulville of Hat Trick Productions, is the brains behind it. Nayeema Raza, co-host of Semafor's Mixed Signals podcast, gives her verdict. Saad Mohseni co-founded the Moby Group, Afghanistan's largest media company. Despite the Taliban being back in power, his TV channel, TOLO, still broadcasts news and educational programmes - and uses female anchors. In a recent episode of HJ Talks About Abuse, Kathleen Hallisey and Hannah Hodgson delved into the serious allegations against Mohamed Al Fayed, the former owner of Harrods. The discussion was timely, coinciding with news reports and a BBC documentary shedding light on the accusations of rape and sexual assault by Al Fayed against over 20 female ex-employees of Harrods. Key points from the discussion include: Allegations: The allegations against Al Fayed are grave, involving more than 20 female ex-employees of Harrods who have come forward to pursue claims for compensation. Abuse of Power: The case exemplifies the abuse of power, with witnesses suggesting that Al Fayed's actions were an open secret within Harrods, pointing to a culture of fear and silence that allowed such abuses to continue unchecked. Institutional Response: The discussion touched on the response by Harrods' current owners, who expressed being appalled by the allegations and offered apologies to the victims, highlighting the complexities of addressing historical abuses within institutions. Legal and Social Implications: Kathleen and Hannah emphasised the importance of survivors coming forward, despite the challenges, and discussed the legal avenues available for seeking justice, including the discretion courts have in allowing cases to proceed despite time limits. The conversation underscored the broader issue of sexual assault and abuse of power in the workplace, encouraging survivors to seek help and advice, and stressing the importance of institutional accountability in preventing and addressing such abuses. #AbuseofPower Who we are: We are a leading, full-service UK law firm.

After the news breaks of Diana and Dodi's fatal car accident, Charles and Fayed fly separately to Paris to supervise arrangements. The tragedy generates a vast outpouring of public grief, which catches the Queen off-guard. While she remains at Balmoral, popular anger builds about her absence from London and the perceived callousness of the Royal Family. Charles, recognising the precariousness of their position, urges the Queen to depart from rigid protocol and make herself visible to the public. At the same time as Diana's death sends shockwaves through the Palace, Fayed processes the loss of his cherished son. Hoping that the news will bring him and the Royal Family together in shared grief, he instead finds himself increasingly shunned.
