The union that represents about 65,000 IRS employees is teaming up with the agency to help attract new talent amid a hiring spree. The Democrats' tax-and-climate law gave the IRS tens of billions to dollars to modernize and go after taxpayers who haven't been paying what they owe. To do that, the IRS needs to build up its workforce, but it is competing with the more-lucrative private sector. That's where the National Treasury Employees Union is stepping in. Bloomberg Tax reporter Erin Slowey spoke with NTEU National President Doreen Greenwald about what the union is doing to negotiate benefits and flexibilities that make it more attractive to come work at the IRS, and why it's important to have a fully funded agency. She also warned about what a possible shutdown in early 2024 would do to the current and prospective workforce. Do you have feedback on this episode of Talking Tax? The Talking Heads are talking again. Forty years after the release of their classic concert film “Stop Making Sense,” the movie and the band are back on the big stage—same as it ever was, or maybe even better. A remastered, 4k version of the movie was released in September, and the band is back on tour burning down the house. On this episode, host Jon Small revisits his interview with the band's co-founder and drummer, Chris Frantz, who wrote a memoir about his once-in-a lifetime experience with the band in 2020. Frantz didn't have the nicest things to say about the band's lead singer David Byrne, but apparently they're back on talking terms — and that's great news because they're one of the best bands of the 1980s.

JPMorgan regional head talks supporting racial equity through affordable housing

Cécile Chalifour wants to see a big wave of advocacy for affordable housing. As Head of the West Region for Community Development Banking at JPMorgan Chase & Co., she works with partners across the spectrum to support the bank's racial equity commitment by helping to build additional affordable housing units in the Western United States. Here she joins Women on the Move host Sam Saperstein to discuss her passion for the mission and her hope of seeing see more innovation in the housing sector.   Finding her place in affordable housing Growing up in France, Cécile attended law school and planned to practice law in her home country. But when her father suddenly passed away at the age of 50, she changed course. Deciding that she didn't want her life to be “the same,” she headed to the United States for what she thought would be a brief but exciting experience. Although she spoke French, German, and Russian, she knew no English. She rectified that via a book on how to learn English in 90 days. “And then because I was going for a job interview in affordable housing, I learned about low-income housing tax credits—I read a whole book about low-income housing tax,” she recalls. “My funny story is always that at the beginning, I was only able to talk about law and finance . . . and I could say nothing about everyday life.”   With a family background in political activism and a personal belief in the common good, Cécile says the policy area of affordable housing was a natural fit for her. “Affordable housing is not just about brick and mortar . . . it's about potentially changing somebody's life trajectory,” she tells Sam. “That means more opportunity, more ability to be healthy. Think about what it means for our communities. It means the better economy. It means all of us doing much better. Fundamentally, I believe that when you invest in affordable housing in our communities, we invest in ourselves—and that drives everything I do.”   In her job in Community Development Banking, Cécile manages the company's affordable housing platform for the Western U.S. region, including construction and permanent financing for large multifamily apartment buildings. They provide the conventional debt in a public and private partnership. Her focus is on deeply targeted housing which is rent restricted and income restricted. Technically that means housing that is below 60 percent of an area's median income.   “So there is an actual threshold,” she adds. “It can be homeless people. It can be people with a job. It happens to be a job that doesn't pay very well. A home for single mom, maybe her first home, a senior on fixed income who's been living in car, a low income family . . . people with special needs or veterans. So that's what we do. We finance those projects.”   Maintaining a focus on diversity and advocacy Coming from a racially diverse family, being a woman in the male-dominated field of commercial real estate, and as a mother to a neurodiverse child, Cécile says she strongly believes that diversity is imperative. She says that especially in the aftermath of George Floyd's murder, she worked hard to focus on her own understanding of privilege and bias. “One of the hardest things I did as a leader was to have a conversation with my team, make myself vulnerable, having a very open conversation about race, what it meant to all of us,” she shares.   As far as advocacy goes, she says she tries to encourage everyone to realize they can make a difference. “A lot of people react to affordable housing from a place of fear,” she says. “So please try to be an advocate when you can: don't be afraid to take risks, be willing to be uncomfortable.”   Overall, she's proud of the work the bank is doing to help people and communities thrive. “The bank is doing quite a lot,” she tells Sam. “And I'm very, very proud to work for a firm that's committing so much to my passion in many ways. Building on our investments, we are helping drive inclusive growth by committing 30 billion, by the end of 2025, to a variety of programs that are meant to encourage economy growth and opportunities for Black, Latino, and Hispanic populations.”   “And that's the impact I'm hoping to have is to not just have been part of the status quo and deliver more projects,” Cécile concludes. “But to be part of the creative thinking on innovation to bring new tools.”   Full Transcript here

Electrek sat down with Gregor Hembrough, the head of Polestar North America, to discuss the electric automaker's latest developments, including the upcoming lower-priced 2022 version of the Polestar 2, SPAC deal speculation, and more. Gregor Hembrough spent two decades in various positions at Volvo before being made head of the Polestar in the US as the automaker relaunched its performance brand as a new all-electric brand under its Geely ownership. While the company had a good start with the Polestar 2, things are just starting to get more interesting for the company in North America. The company is expanding its retail and service footprint and recently announced the upcoming Polestar 3 electric SUV to be produced in the US. Polestar's announcement confirmed that the vehicle would be produced at Volvo's existing factory in South Carolina, but it wasn't clear what degree of production will happen there. It could be just the final assembly or more. When asked about the situation, Hembrough said: "We are finalizing that right now whether we are going to have final assembly or full production. We are working out the details. We have a lot of discussions with suppliers and we are going to share the factory with our sibling brand Volvo." The executive did add that the Polestar 3 will first start production in China, where the automaker is already producing the Polestar 2, and the first Polestar 3 to make it to the US next year will also come from China. However, he did note that US production should follow shortly after. Hembrough also discussed the upcoming 2022 Polestar 2, which is going to feature a few updates: "There are a couple of enhancements to what we offer as well to the hard product itself. We will be offering a longer EPA-rated range of the vehicle. The option of having a heat pump with the car and I believe everyone understands the benefits that the heat pump can bring in variable climates." The head of Polestar North America also confirmed that more options will be available — allowing for more configuration and lower prices. A single motor version will also be made available — again resulting in a lower price. One could even speculate that they could be aiming for prices that will hit the rebate threshold in Quebec or BC in Canada. The Polestar 2 currently starts at $60,000 in the US. Here's our full interview on the Electrek Youtube channel: https://youtu.be/LBbT114j-iM var postYoutubePlayer;function onYouTubeIframeAPIReady() { postYoutubePlayer = new YT.Player( "post-youtube-video" ); } We also asked Hembrough about the recent rumors that Geely was looking to bring Polestar public through a SPAC. While the executive didn't want to comment on that, he did say that they are open to new sources of funding as they expand.

The coronavirus has slammed the retail sector and caused many companies to go out of business. But the pandemic has been a catalyst for growth at Walmart Inc., one of the world's largest retailers. The company's e-commerce sales jumped 97% in the second quarter as consumers hibernated at home and relied increasingly on online shopping. That growth also means an expanding carbon footprint. In this special Climate Week episode of ESG Insider, an S&P Global podcast, we talk to Walmart’s chief sustainability officer, Kathleen McLaughlin. She says the company is making significant strides toward the goals of Project Gigaton, its initiative to eliminate 1 billion metric tons of greenhouse gases by 2030. Walmart has enlisted more than 2,300 of its suppliers, including Unilever, Johnson & Johnson and Fruit of the Loom, to cut greenhouse gas emissions. "Our goal is to rewire the way that supply chains function so that the production of the products that all of use every day is actually sustainable," McLaughlin tells ESG Insider. Oliver’s story about how he came to found Head Talks (www.headtalks.com) (@headtalksnews) is an incredible one. One where he was taken to his inner most sanctum and resilience stretched until it almost snapped. But it didn’t. And to explain this you really need to listen to Oliver’s story in his own words. ‘I was young, I was 27. I was fearless, I was ready to conquer the world. I just got hit by these waves of anxiety, and I just didn't know what it was. Anyway, that led to a spiralling of drugs and alcohol. I call it my year on the run. I basically was running from the problem, and I actually ended up in Australia and being picked off a pavement and flown back to a treatment centre in London’.Oliver is so honest, so open and shares a lot of gems around the importance of mental health, how we can nurture it and to take heed when it is telling us it needs r and r. Our chocolate sojourn is with a rather chewy sweet with a chocolate centre … so you can imagine the challenges we face to continue chewing and chatting! Oliver shares where he has had to have hope and remember patience and what he thinks the next wellbeing trend will be. My book recommendation for this episode: ‘Creative Visualisation’ Shakti Gawain. As Oprah says ‘I do believe, and I have seen in my own life, that creative visualisation works’.I would love your feedback on the show, what you would like to hear more of, less of, and importantly, none of. The best place to do this is on www.hopeandpatience.co.uk. If you enjoy what you listen do it would be fantastic if you could rate and review on Apple. Surprise double episode drop!  My friend Shane Mauss and I have a zany conversation about "the biz" (aka show business). The impetus to release this episode along with Sophia Rokhlin's (EP 08) is because they are on tour together RIGHT NOW doing a cool show called "Head Talks". All the info on that will be clear once you listen to these episodes and or go to Shane's website .  Topics touched : leaving gear in venues, living on the road, being single, Shane's prog comedy shows Stand Up Science & Head Talks, regular jobs vs the never ending uncertainty of art life, my first con job, Magic Mushroom retreats, Life feeling meaningless, what Late Night spots feel like for a comedian these days, thinking in tweets and grams, running out of pink himalayan sea salt, DIY ethics, why an assistant is probably better than a manager or agent, why Sophia Rocks-lin and Shane puts a case of psilocybin into the Cosmic Time Capsule!        Originally from Wisconsin, Shane moved to Boston in 2014 to pursue his childhood dreams of being a comedian.  He is now an award-winning stand-up comedian who has done many TV sets including five appearances on Conan, multiple appearances on Comedy Central and a variety of other shows.  You may know him best from his recent appearances on podcasts like Pete Holmes ‘You Made It Weird', Duncan Trussell's Family Hour, The Joe Rogan Experience, and Marc Maron's WTF.         Midway through his career, this former factory worker who skipped college for comedy followed his natural curiosities and started the science podcast ‘Here We Are' where each week he travels to interview a different scientist about their work and the meanings of life.  In 2019 he started touring with his live show ‘Stand Up Science' which combines two comedians and two scientists on the same stage for a night that is equal parts aha and haha.  Due to the success of this tour, he has decided to add a psychedelic version of the show and ‘Head Talks' was born.        He is a psychedelic advocate and explorer whose 111-city comedy tour about psychedelics ‘A Good Trip' was the inspiration for the documentary ‘Psychonautics: A Comic's Exploration of Psychedelics'.  Available now on Amazon Prime & iTunes, the documentary combines perspectives of some of the top researchers with Shane's personal journey in a fun, enlightening, and somewhat turbulent adventure. He has even been a guest facilitator at several legal psilocybin retreats run by MycoMeditations in Jamaica.  follow Shane www.shanemauss.com @shanecomedy ( twitter) @shanemausscomedy ( instagram )

Debtwire talks with 20+ year Asian banking veteran Rahul Chawla, currently Deutsche Bank’s head of global markets and credit trading in India, about the opportunities and challenges in investing in distressed assets there, particularly ahead of Supreme Court's ruling on the sanctity of the seniority waterfall. India for past few years has been the leading Asia Pacific market for distresses asset investing, following the introduction in late 2016 of the rigorous time-bound Insolvency & Bankruptcy Code. Like all major new legal regimes, the code has had it teething pains—the most painful being the two-year old ongoing Essar Steel India process. That case is awaiting a final ruling from the Supreme Court on whether the financial creditor-approved plan need to be revised to share more of the recovery proceeds with junior, largely operational creditors.

Litigation finance is a phenomenon growing at a monumental pace. Five years ago, capital committed to commercial litigation financing in the US totaled approximately USD 500m. Today, that capital commitment sits at approximately USD 10bn, according to Marc Carmel, co-head of McDonald Hopkins’ litigation finance group. Yet notwithstanding this growth, many questions remain about the industry’s demand, investment mechanics and funding arrangements, especially when they relate to distressed and restructuring litigation financings. To help unravel some of this mystery, Marc recently joined Debtwire’s Richard Goldman for the latest episode of Debtwire Radio. During their conversation, Marc and Richard explain the increased demand for commercial litigation finance in the US, examine how law firm portfolio funding has helped to spur this demand, and analyze the terms and structure of funding agreements that often govern litigation finance investments.
