Building and managing a remote team is very different than doing it in the office. How can you successfully lead your people virtually? How do you create trust and allow for a proper and ongoing communication stream? Richard Phu, the Head of Operations at Outsourcing Angel, is going to walk us through that and much more today. Richard is an expert on successfully creating and leading remote teams, and he's got a lot to divulge about this topic. He'll share with us exactly how much and how often you should be communicating if you have a remote team, and how to best establish rapport with each and every member while supporting them along their individual career journey. Most of all, we'll be discussing the importance of having moments of reflection. Richard makes sure his team sets time and space to keep looking for new things instead of falling into the ‘busyness' trap of running from fire to fire. There's definitely no one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to leading your folks virtually, but the strategies Richard will share today are tried and tested, and can definitely be applied to better the performance of any virtual team. As Richard says so himself, it is harder to manage remote teams, but harder means different. This week's guest is Lucy McCarraher, co-founder of the Hybrid publishing house Rethink Press & author of 12 books including A Book of One's Own – a manifesto for women to share their expertise and make a difference. She helps you write & publish a book that will transform your business whilst creating a realisable work/life integration. Book publishing has done well during the pandemic; perhaps because people were more focused, or had more time on their hands, or at least time to reflect on what they have become experts in and now wanted to share. Lucy was always passionate about books and after a winding career in performance, TV and magazines in Australia, having two sons, going through a divorce, she returned to the UK.Writing several books herself, she eventually teamed up with Joe Gregory to create Rethink Press, a hybrid publisher that positions people as experts and their books as their calling cards. As well as setting up a coaching and mentoring side to the business Lucy also established the Business Book Awards, which, over time she and her team have ensured have become fully representative across all categories.Thank you so much Lucy for championing women and helping them bring their expertise, experience, positive impact and influence to the world so that we start to read more nuanced and diverse books that reflect the lives we live and the businesses we run. Thanks also for showing us that even in our busy lives we can carve out space to write and share our books for the benefit of others. Every business has a story to tell. Don't be afraid to tell it. This week, I'm delighted to be interviewing Lucy McCarraher, who is the founder of Rethink Press and the Business Book Awards, and also the author of 13 books -– three novels, four self-help books and six books on writing, including A Book of One's Own – a manifesto for women to share their experience and make a difference, and Bookbuilder (with Joe Gregory). When you've got your name on the front of a good book or a well-produced book, it says, "I'm the expert here." It's not an overt sales tool, but when you send out your book to your prospects and clients, it tells them what you do. {4:07} There's a thing what I call ‘book magic', for every author something really amazing and unexpected will happen because their book has got into the hands of somebody. {5:20} On how you can repurpose your book manuscript. {10:05} Lucy explains what her Book Builder program is. Putting yourself out there is one of the scariest parts about becoming an entrepreneur. Especially when your business is built around you. This fear is no stranger to me...or to Nkiru. In this episode we sift through the head trash that kept us in the shadows and we're throwing it all in the dumpster so you don't have to. Note: in this episode we talk about things from the perspective of being women in business. Regardless of how you feel about the societal buzzword/shitstorm surrounding the concept of “feminism”, I think these topics impact us all. So I challenge you to listen with an open mind - do that and you're going to get some gold nuggets. Can't-Miss Moments From This Episode:One entrepreneurial myth I'd like to see busted, smashed, and set on fire: if your work is good, if you're talented, eventually you'll get noticed (BZZT! Wrong! Here's why...) What's really going on with all those successful people you admire who “have it all together” (hint: are you really comparing apples to oranges?) There's one thing business coaches do that drives me NUTS. If you get one who promises this, run screaming into the night as fast as you can Two tricks Nkiru and I regularly use to get shit done in our businesses, even when the fear is so intense it threatens to derail everything When you're the brand for your business, are you also the “thing for sale”? We dig into the idea of persona as a product, and how it impacts your successThis one is jam-packed full of advice. People often talk about reading a book that changed their life, but the book that will really change your life is the one you write. Every business founder and entrepreneur should write and publish their own book. I'm here to tell you why, and how it's not as hard as you think it might be to become the author of a really good book. Lucy McCarraher started her first publishing company while she was still at university and has worked in publishing and the media ever since. She is the author of 12 books – three novels, four self-help books and five books on writing, including the most recent, A Room of One’s Own – a manifesto for women to share their experience and make a difference – and Managing Editor of Rethink Press, which has published over 400 niche business and self-development books. Lucy is the Founder of the Business Book Awards, and Global Publish Mentor of the Key Person of Influence programme. She has mentored hundreds of entrepreneurs and business owners to plan, write and publish their books. Lucy is a speaker and trainer, and has a post-grad diploma in teaching Creative Writing and Literacy. She was nominated for the NatWest EveryWoman Awards for female entrepreneurs in 2017.
Lucy McCarraher is the Co-Founder of Rethink Press, a publishing company with a 40+ strong team that has published 75 books last year. She is a work/life balance expert, book mentor, and the author of thirteen books, including A Book of One's Own and The Real Secret. She started in publishing at the age of 21 while she was finishing her degree in Australia by creating an Australian theatre magazine. The magazine led offers of journalistic work with big newspapers and magazines and a TV presenter position with her own TV show on arts and entertainment. Lucy is the Founder of the Business Book Awards and runs the BookBuilder program. Lucy joins me today to share how aspiring women authors can plan and publish their business books. Lucy shares the different types of book deals available to entrepreneurs and small businesses. She discusses women's recognition in business and as experts and why more women need to become authors. Lucy also shares her story and experience with sexism, fighting for recognition, saying no, and the value of finding support from ‘the sisterhood.' “If you are not very keen on going out and selling yourself, a book will go out and do that for you.” - Lucy McCarraher This week on The Unwritten Rules Podcast: The inspiration behind Rethink Press The standard book deal versus an intellectual property deal Sexism and working in the television industry in the 90s Saying no and fighting for the recognition you deserve How business books help small businesses in the non-corporate world Why it is important to encourage more women to write business books The six 'C's that hinder women from publishing books Sharing your problems and finding sisterhood support How Lucy is getting more people to write books through the BookBuilder program How to tell stories, demonstrate your value, and be the expert Resources Mentioned: The Real Secret by Lucy McCarraher TUR011 - A White Guy on the Podcast? ‘A book helps you to have a voice and for that voice to be heard. It’s a business tool like no other, nothing impresses people like a book’ Lucy McCarraher is the Co-founder and Managing Editor of Re-Think Press, a hybrid press publishing the books of entrepreneurs. She is also the publish mentor of the ‘key person of influence program’ an accelerator program for entrepreneurs and founded the Business Book Awards which is now in its third successful year. Traci and Lucy discuss why writing a book is so important and how it is a powerful business tool for anyone wanting to move forward in their business. If you have ever wondered about the process then this is the episode for you providing great detail about how and why you should be writing and publishing the book you have inside you. KEY TAKEAWAYS I grew up wanting to be a writer. My first book was a non-fiction book about work-life balance. As a business person, an entrepreneur your book is there as a business tool. It’s there to position you as an expert, be a lead generator for your business, to position you as an authority. Getting a book out there is a way of saying here I am and is a way of selling yourself which is something women can find difficult to do. I have developed a mentoring program exclusively for women who are writing their own book. A book can seem like a huge undertaking but with a business book, most of it is already in your head. Your experience, perspective and journey are unique you need to show people where you’ve done your learning, it’s about being honest and authentic. Your book is valuable and if only one person benefits it is worth doing. It is also beneficial to you bringing clarity to your work and is there as a resource that can be revisited and reused. If you have put together 30,000 plus words on your area then you are an influential person and have credibility. You have to breakdown the process and dismantle the fear. Position and plan your book creating a detailed blueprint before you begin writing. A book is a gender-neutral way to show your authority. It can seem like a daunting task but it’s a process and can be broken down. BEST MOMENTS ‘Your book when positioned right has a kind of magic to it’ ‘In the first year of the business book awards, we had 11 lovely white male winners’ ‘If you have a reasonably successful business you have a book to write and it will help to grow your business, visibility and credibility’ VALUABLE RESOURCES Women Rockin Business Podcast Next Step Aim High Community Facebook A Book of One’s Own website Lucy McCarraher LinkedIn A Book of One's Own book by Lucy McCarraher Lucy McCarraher ABOO Facebook How to Write Your Book Without The Fuss book by Lucy McCarraher Joe Gregory & Daniel Priestley ABOUT THE GUEST Lucy McCarraher started her first publishing business while she was a student.
