How Anybody Can Make a Million the Smart Way Most entrepreneurs believe the path to wealth is through growing their business and increasing their income. But often, the more they earn, the more they spend. In reality, the key to wealth isn't about earning more—it's about keeping more of what you make. In this episode, I'm joined by personal finance expert, financial coach, multi-million-pound investor, and YouTube sensation, Mr. Huw Davies. Hugh became financially independent in 2016 by living frugally, spending well below his means, and focusing on saving, rather than simply growing income. We'll take you behind the scenes to talk about smart money management, saving, and the strategies that helped Huw create a seven-figure net worth. Tune in for high-value lessons on how to build wealth the smart way. Enjoy the episode!

⚡ NEW EPISODE ALERT
Woke: Laurie Taylor talks to Susan Neiman, philosopher and director of the Einstein Forum about her analysis of the concept of ‘woke'. Contrary to popular assumption, she argues, it is not a set of attitudes which belong on the left of the political spectrum, but is rather an attack on progressive, universal values and the Enlightenment. They're joined by Huw Davies, lecturer in digital education at the University of Edinburgh, who offers a dissection of the British ‘war on woke', suggesting that it is an intensive ideological campaign that is mobilising reactionary tropes within mainstream British political discourse. Producer: Jayne Egerton

Historically Thinking: Conversations about historical knowledge and how we achieve it
On May 11th, 1745, the British Army went into battle against the army of France near the village of Fontenoy, in what is now Belgium. 15,000 British soldiers marched forward bearing not only their muskets, but the reputation that they had gained in the continental campaigns of John Churchill, the first Duke of Marlborough. But Marlborough had by then been dead for nearly 25 years, and the British Army had not adapted or altered. The result was a humiliating defeat, with 6,000 of those 15,000 British either killed or wounded. Another result was a long process of reform, the creation of new forms of knowledge, new approaches that had to be conceived, innovated upon, and then deployed “in the face of organizational tradition, institutional resistance and personal suspicion of change.” My guest Huw Davies describes this long process of reform, and the always speedier process of forgetting, in his new book The Wandering Army: The Campaigns That Transformed the British Way of War. It is not only a book about the British Army, the “Second 100 Years War”, the Enlightenment, and the long 18th century, but also one about creating new institutional cultures, change management, and the reform of complex organizations in difficult circumstances. Huw J. Davies is reader in early modern military history at King's College, London. His previous books include Wellington's Wars: The Making of a Military Genius and Spying for Wellington: British Military Intelligence in the Peninsular War. For Further Investigation Kutuzov and the military enlightenment in Russia was the subject of my conversation with Alex Mikaberidze Cathal Nolan described the enduring and nearly always futile quest for a decisive, war-determining victory in battle in Episode 79 The experience of an army learning, and then forgetting; and learning, and then forgetting, was also a focus of Episode 215, on the book The Other Face of Battle I discussed the Howe family with Julie Flavell when we talked about her book The Howe Dynasty: The Untold Story of a Military Family and the Women Behind Britain's Wars for America
Got something a little different for you today. Instead of physical fitness, we're going to dive deep into financial fitness! A friend of mine, Huw Davies, loves helping people solve money problems, so they can get on with the more important things in life. His aim is to make you financially free whilst putting a smile on your face. The beauty of this episode is it's one for everyone, no matter your income bracket. And Huw explains some strategic shifts you can make in your expenses, savings and investing to maximise your income, and most of all, set yourself up for life. Huw's own story starts from being up to his eyeballs in debt. Until he decided enough is enough. So he became financially independent in 2016, whereby he built a stocks and shares portfolio he could live off, coupled with a £1m property portfolio, all in the space of 18 months. Disclaimer - This is not financial advice. Huw is not a qualified financial advisor. He shares his experience with money and his content is for entertainment purposes only. Huw Davies tried many different traditional jobs and while he gained experience with each one he never found the work he wanted to do for life. This was especially clear when the manager he aspired to be like told him that he will end up stuck doing work he would rather not do if he kept on that path. Huw literally searched ‘how to make money online' and came across a ton of different side hustle ideas. He tried selling on EBay, investing, flipping, and eventually found some success with selling digital books. Huw created a crazy and inspiring schedule to help him keep his day job and build security on the side. He was getting up at 5 Am, putting in work on e-books until he had to head to work and spent every break and evening he could writing. In the first year he managed to create over sixty books. Between these products and his investing he had financial promise. At this point his day job started getting in the way.As he discovered the FIRE (financial independence retire early) community and knew he was making some reasonable solo income he decided to go all in as an entrepreneur. The important thing Huw did was ensure he had some financial success starting to scale, reduced expenses and stayed productive when it came to creating money making opportunities that allowed him to increase his investments over time.We got into talking about death and how powerful its reminders can be. There is a certain part of society that focuses so much on pension, retirement and future living. But what happens if we don't make it there? At the same time we need to be able to pay bills, and fulfill certain duties, so how do we strike a balance and live our best life now?Huw shared quite a bit about his path to early retirement. We heard about stock selection compared to index funds, building passive income and the wisdom that anyone can apply to become financially free. Most of it is common sense, but really clear and quite possible for the majority of people. One of the most interesting conversations was about minimalism. Both mental and physical clutter can bring about so much more stress and anxiety than necessary. Huw shared his resources for learning how to be more minimalist and how he applies it. The real truth is taking things away actually adds to our life if we do it right. Clear evidence of growth mindset was a big part of this episode. I really appreciated how Huw shared the fact that he never saw himself as creative. He did an exercise at work where he ranked not only lowest of everyone at his company in terms of creative ability, but he actually scored a negative. Yet, he now creates content for a living and has really developed many creative strengths. Lost in all of this potentially is how many incredible tips Huw gives when it comes to being a content creator. He told us how little experience he had. He told us how he was introverted and struggled with comfort on camera. He shared the fact that as his platforms grew he received more and more hate. What is very clear though is that he is good at growing a following, so his ideas were very helpful. So much edutainment. How to build creative confidence and become a content creator. How to retire early with financial freedom and how to be a successful entrepreneur. How to use grief, death and the challenges of life to make us better, not worse.9 Tips For Financial FreedomIn any endeavor, you can find people who have accomplished what you want to accomplish and model your efforts after them. Learn from them. Read books, take course, and network with them if you can. Try side hustles. There are hundred of great ideas. But pick one, or pick a few and narrow it down to one. Once you pick one, go all in as much as you can in your spare time.If you can, focus on some of your passions that could be monetizable. Look at the insight of Ikigai and combine your interests with something the world needs.Realize it's ok if you are bad with money. I was terrible with money. But that's when it's really important to start learning about how to grow true wealth. Be open to learning and improving your money mindset, whether it's making more, saving more effectively, or investing.Learn from the FIRE (Financial Independence Retire Early) community about how to grow your wealth and find financial freedom. Being part of a community of people making this effort can be really motivating.Learn to love delayed gratification. Nothing worthwhile will be accomplished overnight. So you might as well enjoy the process of really hard work and figuring it out while the results are still far away. But, remember that it is going to pay off. When it comes to investing focus on index funds, something that combines a bunch of steady and stable, yet growing companies. Not specific, single stock selection. Investing in markets should be a very long term play. Build a budget based off of your needs, not your wants. Continue to find ways that you can reduce spending and increase income.Appreciate that if you succeed in retiring early you are not just one of the lucky ones, but it will be because you did not give up. The majority of people just give up because it becomes too much work. So expect to feel like giving up, but be ready to build habits to help you push on. Memorable Quotes“Death is shit. But, it's one of life's most powerful teachers. It gives you the power to remember to live for the moment and do that thing you want to do.”“I'll work my tits off and be very uncomfortable from delayed gratification, because I know how great I will feel afterwards and I realize now, that I am the weird one.”“The goal of life is to try to close the gap between who you are and what your potential is, and you'll never, ever reach it, but the pursuit of it will give you true fulfillment in life.”“When you start to chase luxuries, there is no end.” “I die, or I get to a million subscribers. So only two things could happen there.” Guest BioHuw Davies became financially independent in 2016. Since then he has built an impressive investing portfolio, both in traditional stocks and real estate. Huw is an entrepreneur who is currently growing his social audience. He uploads weekly videos about life topics such as business, wealth, and personal development.Huw struggled with his weight, health and money. But life turned around when he focused on his finances. From budgeting, to growing income and re-investing with a FIRE (Financial Independence Retire Early) mindset he was able to get out of his 9-5 mentality and technically retire within ten years of setting that goal.FOLLOW HuwYoutube HuwDaviesChannelInstagram @huwsview Twitter @huwsview TikTok @huwsviewFOLLOW JUSTIN (JustTries)Website - JustTriesHOMEInstagram - @JustTriesYouTube - Just TriesTwitter - @JustTries_Tiktok - @justtriesPinterest - JustTriesFacebook - Just TriesCONNECT WITH JUST KEEP LEARNINGWebsite - JKLHOMEInstagram - @JustKeepLearning.CaTiktok - @justkeeplearning.caFacebook - Just Keep LearningFree Group - JKL Goal Setting CommunityWe appreciate you being here! It's not that Dundas was opposed to the use of light infantry he thought it was, the pejorative term was, 'it's very American' A BETTER PEACE welcomes Dr. Huw Davies of King's College London. Huw joins WAR ROOM Editor-In-Chief Jacqueline Whitt to trace the development of Great Britain's Light Infantry. It's easy to call yourself a learning organization, but to do so there must be a serious examination of history. Specifically, one must study their own organization's history examining the greatest failures in great detail and be willing to make changes. War stories over dinner, journal entries and some of the first organized staff rides led to the development of Rangers, the use of local forces and a dedicated light infantry that was confronted with a great deal of resistance. The conversation ties past development to modern day failures to actually learn from previous lessons. Dr. Huw J. Davies is a Reader in Early modern Military History, and has been a member of the Defence Studies Department at the School of Security Studies, King's College London since March 2005. Jacqueline E. Whitt is an Associate Professor of Strategy at the U.S. Army War College and the Editor-in-Chief of WAR ROOM. IT’S BEEN A WHILE since Josh and Jeremy have heard from the loveable scamp Huw Davies but he is back now and ready to rumble! Fresh off his three month trip to Canada and America, the Talkie Boys rediscover the worst qualities of Mr. Davies as his vacation recap is utterly shambolic, from true Canadian summer love, stumbling into the worst scene from Star Wars and four hour drum circles. Then Jeremy poses a question that challenges the way humans interact forevermore. These Talkie Boys are grossly desperate for admiration and acknowledgement so if you would like to help these sad, sad boys out, you can find them here: Facebook: @deapodcast https://www.facebook.com/deapodcast/ Instagram: @deapodcast https://www.instagram.com/deapodcast/ Jeremy: @slippin_on_peels Josh: @j__sh._ Huw: @huwperfluous Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/dont-expect-anything YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCIlEVJAU7gIirt6xgaG3g4g
Date of Recording: 19 Feb 2019 Description: Book Launch 'Spying for Wellington: British Military Intelligence in the Peninsular War' - Dr Huw Davies Intelligence is often a critical factor in a successful military campaign. This was certainly the case for Arthur Wellesley, the Duke of Wellington, in the Peninsular War. In this book, author Huw J. Davies offers the first full account of the scope, complexity, and importance of Wellington's intelligence department, describing a highly organized, multifaceted series of networks of agents and spies throughout Spain and Portugal--an organization that is at once a microcosm of British intelligence at the time and a sophisticated forebear to intelligence developments in the twentieth century. Spying for Wellington shows us an organization that was, in effect, two parallel networks: one made up of Foreign Office agents "run" by British ambassadors in Spain and Portugal, the other comprising military spies controlled by Wellington himself. The network of agents supplied strategic intelligence, giving the British army advance warning of the arrival, destinations, and likely intentions of French reinforcements. The military network supplied operational intelligence, which confirmed the accuracy of the strategic intelligence and provided greater detail on the strengths, arms, and morale of the French forces. Davies reveals how, by integrating these two forms of intelligence, Wellington was able to develop an extremely accurate and reliable estimate of French movements and intentions not only in his own theater of operations but also in other theaters across the Iberian Peninsula. The reliability and accuracy of this intelligence, as Davies demonstrates, was central to Wellington's decision-making and, ultimately, to his overall success against the French. Correcting past, incomplete accounts, this is the definitive book on Wellington's use of intelligence. As such, it contributes to a clearer, more comprehensive understanding of Wellington at war and of his place in the history of British military intelligence. Speaker bio: Dr Huw J Davies is a Senior Lecturer in Defence Studies, and has been a member of the department since March 2005. He is currently Deputy Dean of Academic Studies (Education) and the Academic Course Director for the Advanced Command and Staff Course. His area of research focuses on the activities of the British Army between 1750 and 1850. As a result, he has conducted research in the United States, India, Pakistan and Australia, as well as in archives in Europe. In this episode of the Digital Sociology Podcast I am talking to Huw Davies who is a researcher at the Oxford Internet Institute at the University of Oxford. Huw tells me about his research into young peoples' use of technology (and particularly the internet). His research has shown that there are significant social class differences between how young people of different social class backgrounds tend to use technologies. However, this doesn't always follow the patterns we might expect. He has found from his detailed research with young people that many might not be engaging with the school curriculum on digital literacy (for instance) but nevertheless have sophisticated skills and are quite entrepreneurial with online and creative activities. The two papers of Huw's we discussed were: Davies HC and Eynon R (2018) Is digital upskilling the next generation our ‘pipeline to prosperity’? New Media and Society. DOI: 10.1177/1461444818783102. https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1177/1461444818783102 Davies HC (2018) Learning to Google: Understanding classed and gendered practices when young people use the Internet for research. New Media & Society 20(8): 2764–2780. On a very special investigative episode, Jeremy and Josh are extremely sober, not snacking and on the case of their weird co-host Huw Davies. After meeting Huw’s anonymous green troll baby last week, the two Talkie Boys decided to take a week off from their own lives and research this modern enigma. They recount the oddest week of their lives as they followed Huw to underground play-fights, fruit markets and esoteric pen pranks. Will they uncover the truth, or will the truth unravel them? In this episode Mick asks previous guest Dr Huw Davies to return to the show to discuss the personal library of the 1st of Duke of Wellington. Huw highlights how the exploration of the Iron Duke's library can hint at what military officers in the 18th and 19th centuries were reading before Clausewitz's famous work was published. Maurice, Comte de Saxe and Henry Lloyd are highlighted as two influential authors of the time. It is a fascinating subject and the discussion covers battlefields across Britain, France, Spain and India. Mick also makes one of his funnier jokes before confirming Huw's previous definition of "War is..."
