Sophie has her own practice, City Dietitians, and is the London Chair of the British Dietetic Association. She thinks that stands you in good stead, should you wish to go it alone in future. Sophie specialises in gut health and says she was first drawn to it "because it's embarassing and taboo". "We often see patients who have never spoken about it. De-stigmatising that and giving people help when they need it is magic," she says. The ketogenic diet is everywhere you look, promoted as a quick way to lose weight. It seems to tap into something within many of us and comes with the added attraction of appearing to be based in some scientific theory. There is also the fact that there is evidence that, under proper medical supervision, the low-carb diet can be effective for children with drug-resistant epilepsy. But is it all it's cracked up to be when it comes to weight loss and could there be some damaging effects? Keto certainly has a number of high-profile supporters, but there are just as many people warning of the dangers. In this episode of the Table Talk podcast, Stefan Gates is joined by the London Chair of the British Dietetic Association, Sophie Medlin, to explore the science and bust the myths. She sets out what a typical keto diet meal plan might look like, how ketosis works, and why the diet is proving so popular. She also discusses potential risks to gut health, the impact the diet can have on our relationship to food, and concerns about the lack of evidence around its long-term effects. Sophie also offers some advice on how to establish a sustainably healthy diet. This week I was joined by Dietitian Sophie Medlin, we discussed all things Obesity. Covering what we believe are key drivers to the ever growing Obesity rates in the U.K. We also spoke about the latest 'Cancer Research' campaign, the health and every size movement (HAES), weight stigma and diet culture.
On this Episode of Fitness Unfiltered, in the wake of widespread internet commentary on Cancer Research UK's recent ad campaign linking Cancer to Obesity with imagery that appears to compare it to smoking as a risk factor, we are lucky to be joined by Director of City Dietitians, Sophie Medlin, who helps us dissect the adverts themselves, and the reasons that so many people have had such strong reactions to them. We talk about the reasons for people disagreeing with the campaign, and whether these reasons justify the intensity of some of the reactions to it. Both obesity and cancer are both particularly emotive topics, and it can be particularly difficult to put aside out biases and pre-formed opinions when discussing topics like these, but hopefully we have managed to do this in a sensitive and balanced way. Let us know what you think! We hope you enjoy this episode, and if you do please give us a review and rating and subscribe to the podcast, tell all your friends and tag us in your social media posts! Welcome to HOOVERING, the podcast about eating. Host, Jessica Fostekew (Guilty Feminist, Motherland) has a frank conversation with an interesting person about gobbling; guzzling; nibbling; scoffing; devouring and wolfing all up… or if you will, hoovering. This week I’m talking to an actual dietitian. Real life eating expert, Sophie Medlin. We have a picnic in a classroom at KCL, where she lectures. We eat loads, while I learn loads: this is a myth-buster-episode-extraordinaire. From the importance of breakfast to some ironically cruel behaviour from vegans. Honourable MentionsHere’s a link to the Kings College London Nutrition and Dietetics Department, seeing as Sophie waved the flag pretty hard for that as a potential career. And here’s the Guardian article by the magic Grace Dent about the perils of being veganish. Recipes I made Hugh Fernley-Whatsit’s carrots with almonds and cumin. I’ve found the recipe online here, but in the one I used (from the book: Three Good Things) there was a bonus tip if you’re eating this cold to add segments of orange flesh if you wanted. And I had one in, so I did. And the vegan potato salad I brought was from a wicked blog called The Veg Space. I didn’t have any cress to lob all over it and that was fine. Also - it lasted for AGES. OH, AndIf you’ve got any few cashish, I’m on a brilliant site called Patreon where I exchange for rewards including exclusive content for a monthly droplet of your hard earned wedge.
