Maybe they'll even talk about the time Gwensanity swept the Rio Olympics, or one of the many amazing sprint finishes in tri history (which mostly seem to involve Lionel Sanders these days)   Here's what a lack of sleep does to your cycling performance - and how to improve the quality of yours Improving your sleep could provide the single biggest boost to your cycling performance it's possible to make by legal means. Though it was arguably made famous as a “marginal gain” when Team Sky (now Ineos Grenadiers) started carting their own mattresses with them at the Tour de France, sleep may in fact be a maximal gain – it really is that fundamental in building fitness and maintaining health. So how can you make sure you're getting the optimum dose of the most potent legal performance enhancer known to cycling humanity? Nick Littlehales, a sleep coach who has worked with British Cycling to help elite riders understand what happens when we sleep and why it's specifically important for cyclists. “The simple fact is, we should be allocating over 30 per cent of every 24 hours to a defined recovery process,” says Littlehales. “Everything gets repaired when we sleep, which means consistent sleep deprivation diminishes every pillar of human performance, not only muscular and respiratory recovery.”   It's while we sleep that most testosterone and human growth hormone is released, more than in any other phase in each 24-hour cycle. Furthermore, the stress hormone cortisol decreases, cells and muscles are repaired, and our heart and cardiovascular system get the chance to rest. There is a lack of hard evidence around sleep and sports performance, but preliminary studies have suggested that sleep deprivation may also be linked with accelerated muscle atrophy when in a calorie deficit.   “You need to listen to your body,” Littlehales adds. “Cyclists want to be continually pushing their boundaries and sometimes hours of sleep are perceived as a waste of time. But you need a balance, and you need consistent and sustainable levels of recovery.”   What are Continuous Glucose Monitors? "We feel that putting such powerful information into the hands of younger riders is taking away a skill - deciding when you need to eat and learning about your body [...] It shouldn't be a completely automated process where every decision is being taken by technology."   What's New in the 303: Nationwide E-Bike Tax Credit Bill Returns to Congress Leading bike industry advocate PeopleForBikes is asking supporters of the legislation to sign an online petition.   The Electric Bicycle Incentive Kickstart for the Environment Act first arrived in Congress in 2021. Like most bills that come to America's legislative chambers, it never passed into law. But five politicians and bike industry advocates hope that 2023 will be the year Americans get tax credits for buying electric bicycles, according to a statement from industry advocate PeopleForBikes.   For the bill's sponsors, getting more cars off the road is a clear win for reducing reliance on fossil fuels.   “Transitioning to a clean energy economy includes changing the way we get around. That means transit, rail, and electric buses, cars, and bikes. Our bill will make it more affordable for working people to buy an e-bike and help get cars off the road,” said Senator Brian Schatz, chairman of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation, Housing and Urban Development.   Other bill supporters include Representatives Jimmy Panetta (California), Earl Blumenauer (Oregon), Mike Thompson (California), and Adam Schiff (California).   E-bikes parked for a sharing program An office worker takes an e-bike from the bicycle sharing programs that have become common in many cities; (photo/Shutterstock) Bill: $1,500 Credit for E-Bike Purchase The E-BIKE Act hasn't really changed from its 2021 version, according to PeopleForBikes.   It proposes a refundable 30% tax credit for purchasing an electric bicycle — up to a $1,500 credit for new bicycles that cost less than $8,000. The credit would be allowed once per individual every three years or twice for a joint-return couple buying two electric bicycles.   There's one addition to the 2023 bill, however: income caps. These limits parallel the electric vehicle tax credit caps. That means no tax credit for those with an annual salary of $150,000 for single filers, $225,000 for heads of households, or $300,000 for those filing jointly. The bill also mandates a report from the IRS after two years to understand the distribution of the credit by income tax bracket and adjust for equity in the future, according to PeopleForBikes.   An electric bicycle tax credit was included in the House-approved Build Back Better Act in 2021. Maybe so Daytona Beach–It’s easy to want to compare the Professional Triathlon Organisation’s Championship (PTO) at Challenge Daytona with IRONMAN’s Kona. You really can’t though. If this were boxing, it’s like watching light and middle weight boxers fight versus heavy weights. The road is flat, the only foe is the athlete in front, and the voices in their heads telling them when to make a move or not. For the pros, with their race contained entirely inside the 2.5 mile oval that is one of the most famous racing venues in the world, it was all right in front of them. Lap after lap. 20 times on the bike, four times on the run, and even twice on the swim. Yes, there is a large lake inside the track along with an RV park, smaller tracks and plenty of open space. The whole thing was a made-for-television event. The race was about speed and making moves. In the men’s race, Coloradans Matt Hanson, Rudy Von Berg and Sam Long finished 2nd, 5th and 9th respectively.  Both Hanson and Long came from fairly far back after the swim to chase down the leaders and contend for the podium. Hanson had the fastest run of the day with a blistering 5:20/mile pace over the 18k run. While Long made up his deficit mostly on the bike with a fastest bike of the day riding the 80k course in 1:38:24 averaging 30.2 mph! He showed moments of speed on the run trying to catch up and at one point he held second place! Von Berg with a fast swim and bike, ran in contention all day. He and Long battled on the run for a couple of laps creating a buzz in the crowd watching on the jumbo tron—sort of a modern day “Iron War.” Von Berg pushed ahead of Long but slipped back on the last lap finishing just off the podium behind Britain’s George Goodwin, a middle distance specialist and long course veteran Lionel Sanders—who turned in the second fastest bike split and came from far back himself.  Other Observations Quote of the Day - Anne Haug - "It's like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're going to get". The Thursday morning crash happened on U.S. 95 south of Boulder City, according to Nevada Highway Patrol spokesman Jason Buratczuk.  Around 9:40 a.m., a box truck struck a group of about 20 bicyclists. Four men and one woman died at the scene, according to authorities.  The box truck remained at the scene for several hours after the collision, as authorities investigated what caused the crash.  "It doesn't appear to be impairment," Buratczuk said. "It appears to be a tragic accident." Of the four bicyclists injured, one of the riders was flown to a hospital in a helicopter in critical condition. It appeared the bicyclists were part of an organized ride, Buratczuk said. They had a chase vehicle with them with flashers. Maybe so Daytona Beach–It’s easy to want to compare the Professional Triathlon Organisation’s Championship (PTO) at Challenge Daytona with IRONMAN’s Kona. You really can’t though. If this were boxing, it’s like watching light and middle weight boxers fight versus heavy weights. One is full of action, flurries, speed and rapid fire punches, the other, a war of strength and stamina and seeing who can withstand the most for the longest. There is room in this world for both. There will be fans of both. But for the pros’ yesterday may have been a game changer. Kona is Kona. Dave Scott is a 6x Ironman World Champion and I thought this interview was going to be all about mindset and a winning mentality. What evolved was a completely unexpected conversation about depression. You'll hear: 20:40 "All the way through my 20s and when I was competing, I wrestled with depression and the depression that I had would consume me sometimes. Took me until today to get this show out.  Not because I don’t have time.  Not because I don’t have ideas and content. Not because I have technical issues.  No, just lacked basic motivation over the last couple days.  Been watching low quality TV, eating poorly, playing some my online zombie game…you know, super adult and productive! It’s ok to take a day or two off but don’t let these doldrums turn into patterns or new habits.  Now is a good time to start new habits.  An excellent way to kick out of a malaise is to do a fixed program – like a 10-day meditation challenge or a 20-day plank challenge.  Or a daily journaling challenge. I’ve kicked off a couple new projects this week.  First is I’m reading the Princess Bride into audio for 20-30 minutes every day and posting it on my web site.  I figured if I could read to my kids when they were young, I can read to everyone’s kids.  You can find the current nine reading sessions on my website under Story Time.  I also got asked by some folks to participate in a group story telling event for the Chicago Area Running Association.  That’ll be a live Zoom meeting Wednesday night of this week. My work is super busy.  My training stepped back to just some easy runs and one crazy HIT workout this week. These HIT – High Intensity Training workouts are something you can do from your house.  You can look them up online or just make them up.  The basic form is a short sprint followed by some high-intensity exercises.  For example; go out your front door and sprint 100M out and back, then do 10 fast pushups, 10 fast crunches, 5 pullups then sprint again, 3 more exercises, sprint – you will be gasping like a fish out of water.  Definitely a change in pace for me who’s been doing mostly easy trail runs.  The entire world is marching through my woods these days as well.  I know they’re bored, but I feel a bit violated.  Buddy and I cut those trails 20 years ago.  Now I’m shoulder to shoulder with the hoi polloi in my happy place.  I have to go out at dawn if I want some peace.  Today we have a great interview with old friend and running journalist Matt Fitzgerald who is publishing a new book this month called Running the Dream where he executes all of our adult fantasies and lives and trains as a professional with a professional team for a race.  It’s a great read and gets my thumbs up. In section I’ll give you a the results of a Q&A I did on Facebook which may or may not be useful.  And is section two a follow-up apocalypse story from the same universe I created last episode.  Having fun with this.  Maybe this is the book I was looking for?  … Had a nice outing with Ollie on Friday night.  Coach gave me a day off on Saturday and I was super sore from that HIT workout on Thursday so I figured I could go out late.  The day got away from me from the start.  The dog woke up early, like 5:30 and after I let him out to pee, I laid down on the couch.  Ollie climbed up on the back of the couch and fell asleep sort of sitting on me.  Next thing I know it’s 7:30. Missed my 7:00 AM call.  Took Ollie for a walk and went to work on the back to back calls and deadlines feeling unmotivated.  But, I dropped that 2-hour run on my calendar for 6:30 PM.  I didn’t even come close to completing everything that was due or catching up.  But, at 6:30 I grabbed my new headlamp and Ollie and headed into the woods. Technically the sun set at 7:00.  But, as a trail runner you start to understand the relationship between sunset, weather and having enough light to see.  It was a clear and beautiful day.  Without cloud cover you get another 30 minutes or so of residual light after the sun sets.  Ollie and I set out into the woods.  The melt is on now and there’s plenty of mud to deal with.  There’s a spot out on the trail about 3 miles out where we run along the edge of the pond.  There’s the remnants of a cottage and a break in the bushes where their beach used to be.  I set my sites on getting to this spot before the sun was totally gone to get a photo. I’ve taken to stopping here and taking the same photo from the same place to mark the passing of the days and seasons.  I stand on the same stone and frame the same tree and get the same photo.  I wasn’t sure this one would come out.  The sun had set 10-15 minutes before.  But it came out beautifully.  I arrived right at that point when you have to switch the headlamp on.  It’s a hauntingly beautiful shot.  It’s a shot in the moment.  That peaceful glow of a setting sun.  That slight ripple from the paddling of unseen ducks in the shadow. The water black and smooth.  The tree starkly silhouetted against it all.  That moment of peace and beauty was there whether or not the work got done.  That beauty was there whether or not the apocalypse raged.  That beauty and peace is still there.  I just wasn’t looking for it.  What are you focused on?  Your beauty and peace is still there.  Everything else is just made up.  Own your focus. Well, I’m still training.  My A race in June hasn’t gotten cancelled yet.  I was going to cobble this race trip together with a Vancouver vacation with my wife – but she is making noises like there’s no way she’s getting on an airplane with me in June.  I haven’t made my travel plans yet.  Maybe this will become one of those in-and-out guerilla marathon tries that my races always seem to devolve into. My friend running buddy Frank, yes the drummer for the Nays, is making noises like he might come.  He was training for Vermont and that got pushed.  It’s going to be a full fall with all the races moving.  It will be interesting. You’ll have twice as many races with the same number of runners. This may be the straw that breaks the camel’s back for a lot of races.  We’ll see some consolidation.  We’ll see that same consolidation and aggregation across industries.  The small and fragile will get washed out and the big and strong will invest and get bigger. It’s the cycle of life, I guess.  The thing is this type of forest clearing creates the next wave of growth.  When businesses see a contraction like this it creates thousands of entrepreneurs for the next cycle. Ollie is being Ollie.  He’s a nut.  He’s so strong.  We’re working it out.  He’s been good interacting with all the new people on the trails.  He doesn’t attack them. He immediately defaults to submissive with other dogs.  That’s good because I don’t’ think I have the upper body strength to run with him on leash all the time. Took me until today to get this show out.  Not because I don't have time.  Not because I don't have ideas and content. Not because I have technical issues.  No, just lacked basic motivation over the last couple days.  Been watching low quality TV, eating poorly, playing some my online zombie game…you know, super adult and productive! It's ok to take a day or two off but don't let these doldrums turn into patterns or new habits.  Now is a good time to start new habits.  An excellent way to kick out of a malaise is to do a fixed program – like a 10-day meditation challenge or a 20-day plank challenge.  Or a daily journaling challenge. I've kicked off a couple new projects this week.  First is I'm reading the Princess Bride into audio for 20-30 minutes every day and posting it on my web site.  I figured if I could read to my kids when they were young, I can read to everyone's kids.  You can find the current nine reading sessions on my website under Story Time.  I also got asked by some folks to participate in a group story telling event for the Chicago Area Running Association.  That'll be a live Zoom meeting Wednesday night of this week. The IRONMAN World Championship is really the cherry on top for me this year and I am considering it more of a "victory lap". I qualified for Kona at IM Boulder this year and then the following week proceeded to start the Leadman race series (5 trail events over 3 months ending with the 100 mile run in Leadville, Colorado back in August). Been a long and busy year so I am excited to just be there in Kona with family and friends supporting. What is your favorite career IRONMAN memory so far Drinking beers on State Street with family/friends the night before qualifying at Wisconsin back in 2013. That and running down Ali'I Drive. So much emotion and feelings in those last couple hundred yards. Is this your first time competing in Kona and if no how many other times have you done so? No. This will be my 2nd time back in Kona, hoping for some redemption this time around. If someone were watching that is new to the sport, what would you tell them is the coolest thing about being a triathlete and competing in this venue. I think there is something to be said about sharing this course (and the day) with the world's best athletes. Coolest thing about this venue...everything you see on TV, the magic and mystique of the island is so true. What do you think is the hardest thing about doing an IRONMAN? Like training for any endurance sport/event, knowing when to hold back to stave off injury and/or burnout. The hardest thing about actually executing the IRONMAN race is pulling everything together (pacing, nutrition, race strategy, etc.). For me, It's HOW you manage those variables and unknowns that are thrown at you on race day that separate you from having a great race to an okay race.   Niki Leo What are you most excited about in competing in Kona?  I am most excited to experience the legend course, to personally feel the heat, humidity, and winds that are so infamous.  I am also excited to see in person, at one time, many of my heroes in the sport.  Triathlon is genuinely one of the only sports in the world where you get to compete on the same field of play as the professionals...and do that with all of them is going to be amazing.  I am truly excited about just being able to have this opportunity. What is your favorite career Ironman so far?  That is a hard one...Louisville 2018 where I qualified will probably always be special because I realized a dream come true.  However, my first Ironman--Arizona in 2011--will probably always be my favorite because my love for the sport was all so pure then-- a lesson in ignorance is bliss. The celebratory feeling that I could actually do something like a full Ironman...there is always that doubt...and then you cross that finish line and you cannot believe it...the feeling is so indescribable unless you've done it.  It is also the only time I ever felt that way...after finishing the first, knowing you could do it, the others after that were amazing but I knew I could finish because I had before. Is this your first time competing in Kona?  Yes.  I have always wanted to qualify and came close a couple of times however, in 2018 after my first DNF (ever) in Ironman Boulder--which was supposed to be my 11th IM--I did IM Canada (which turned out to be #11). Destroyed about the DNF at Boulder, I registered for Louisville (12) to get onto the Legacy list.  Well...I finished second (missing first by 6 seconds) and qualified! If someone were new to the sport, what would I tell them is the best thing about being a triathlete and competing at this venue?  For sure, triathlon has saved me in so many ways...it has given me something to live for and something to always work towards.  It has given me the feeling few will ever experience in their lifetime--that feeling of wanting so badly to stop and yet, feeling the most alive I ever feel.  It has given me direction when I have been lost--depression, eating disorders, cancer.  It has given me determination and grit to endure--pain, injuries (which all have come as result of getting hit by cars...multiple times).  It has given me a family and friends that I would not otherwise have in CO since I moved here not knowing anyone.  It has given me perspective that I'm human--changing and adapting everyday is required to lead a balanced life.  The venue itself will cause you to doubt yourself, to face failure, to determine what your priorities in life are, and it will make you feel more alive than anything else in this world if you dare take yourself there. What do I think is the hardest part of Ironman?  The time it takes.  The energy it takes at times.  The fear you have to overcome to test yourself.  And to do it for YOU.  That first one is always about YOU...then you "drink the kool aid" and for some reason, it changes.  I have a love/hate relationship with Ironman because of this.  I think the family and culture it creates can be amazing but I have also seen it destroy people.  It can be so intimidating so I think the hardest thing is not to lose yourself and don't lose sight of what Ironman is in your life...that is, it is a hobby/sport you enjoy and unless you are a pro, it does not define you. Hey guys! Welcome to Episode 17 of The Daily Cordial   Today I’m talking to an inspirational friend of mine.. Matt Coulter.    Matt is the co-founder and executive director of The Young and Brave Foundation, which is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping today’s youth beat cancer. What an incredible intention, right? It’s an incredible foundation designed to support those, 40 and under, who are battling cancer. I also love that if you donate to a specific warrior 100% of the money goes to the family… it’s amazing.    One of the things that inspires me most about Matt is his journey to find meaning in his life.  He started his career in a high paying job, completely driven by money and status.   I think most of us can relate to the idea of chasing the wrong things…  whether it’s Money, Fame, status, (the list goes on and on) and thinking these things are going to bring us that deep fulfillment that we are longing for… “When I have this, or when this happens THEN I will be happy. “ But these things are usually ego driven and insatiable.. so no matter how much money, fame or status we get, it will never be enough.    And if you peel back yet another layer, I think ultimately we are just trying to prove to ourselves and others    1. that we’re enough  2. that we matter  3. that we’re special.    All of which is actually an inside job and will never be satiated from the external world. So either way we’re set up for failure chasing these things that our society places so much value on..      And this is not to say you can’t want these things but understand, that they will probably not fulfill you in the way that you think they will.    Some people go a lifetime unknowingly chasing these things only to reach their goal mystified as to why they don’t feel fulfilled.…and quite the opposite are greeted with empty dissatisfaction.    What’s cool about Matt is that he made this discovery about himself early on. In his early 30’s, feeling dissatisfied and unfulfilled he quit his high paying job and shifted his purpose to giving back to others - starting “The Young and Brave Foundation” with his best friend, professional surfer Nathanial Curran. In section one I'm going to report on my lessons learned from the Boston marathon this year.  (I must be a slow learner because I keep having to learn some lessons over and over!) Links are in the show notes and at RunRunLive.com … Well my friends we've made it to the summer solstice.  That time that is the official, astronomical beginning of summer.  The longest day up here in the northern hemisphere where the earth wobbles precariously, catches itself and begins the long, drunken careen back to winter.  If you're in the southern hemisphere you can just switch all the words with their opposites.  For all the pagan sun worshippers out there you need to build some stone circles and do a little dance.  Maybe sacrifice something – like a six pack of lager.  If you don't believe the earth is round, well there's no hope for you.  If you want to have some fun ask random people basic astronomy questions, like “Does the earth orbit the sun or does the sun orbit the earth?”  Or “Name the planets?”  Then sit back and be surprised with the answers. It is getting warm up in my neck of the woods.  The deer flies are out. I'm adjusting to it as always.  For everything there is a season – Turn, Turn, Turn.  Mostly I'm just trying to get all my runs in and trying to keep all the balls in the air. I'm doing a lot of trail running and some mountain biking.  It's all good.  Friday I hit the ski area next to my house and did some reps on my bike up the tubing hill.  It's just about right for me to get to max effort at the top without blowing up or falling over.  Sunday I did 2 hours in the trails before going to have a father's Day lunch with my Mom and brother. I'm a bit tired today.  We had one of those summer thunderstorm fronts role through at 3 in the morning.  Thunder and lightning cause Buddy the old wonder dog a lot of personal stress and he needs to share his unhappiness with me.  Sometimes he goes and hides in the bath tub.  Sometimes we'll open the basement door and let him hide down there.  But usually he just wanders the house being miserable like last night. It's summer.  What are you going to do?  I don't mind running in the heat as long as I'm acclimated and kitted out for it.  I love running in a warm summer rain.  … I was down in Atlanta last week all week.  It was a series of all-hands type meetings where the whole company comes in.  I was on stage for some of it.  It's a tiring week.  There's the travel, the preparation, getting up to get my workouts in, being engaged all day and then socializing at night.  I did manage to get enough sleep to execute.  I did manage to get some sort of workouts in in the morning.  It was super-hot in Atlanta.  High 90's with humidity.  Even in the morning I was soaked from running outside.  I told them the only thing keeping me from bursting into flames was the humidity.  We were down near Georgia Tech this time so I got to explore the tech campus on one run – which was fun.  I also got to go to a Braves game one night. Matt and I are going to talk a lot about mental training today in the interview.  Your mental engagement in the training and racing is as important as the physical engagement.  You can't be successful unless you have both.  It's that perfect combination of mental engagement and physical capabilities that makes you successful.  I think you can draw a parallel to your career.  If you hate what you're doing and are not mentally engaged it doesn't matter how good you are at it, you will still struggle.  The inverse is true as well.  If you are mentally engaged but don't know what you're doing it won't work either.  One of the telltale signs that you aren't mentally engaged in what you're doing is whether the doing of it saps your energy or energizes you.  If you are fully, mentally bought in to a job you will have inexhaustible energy to pour into it.  Doing the work will give you energy.  If you're in a position where doing the work exhausts you while you are doing the work then either the work or the people you're working with are not for you.  There is a disconnect there.  Pay attention and see which way your energy meter runs when you're doing the work. When I was jogging around the Tech campus I was listening to DirtDawg talk about the difference between a job, a career and a calling.  One of those differences is in the way your energy flows. Happy Father's Day.  Does everyone have their summer plans?  Are you ready?  Have you filled your kiddie pool in the backyard up with ice? 4th of July in the States is on a Monday this year.  I don't have any plans.  I guess I'll have to venture down and see if my Cape house is still standing.  Maybe I'll recreate Thoreau's walk up the outer Cape to Provincetown?  That might be epic.  We're coming into that time where the Europeans take the whole summer off.  Work tends to slow down as people head out to vacation.  I'll keep it short today because I don't have a lot to say.  Please consider becoming a member – It's how I justify the time and money it takes to pull off this podcast.  Also if you are looking at a Fall race you might want to check out my book MarathonBQ.  If you want to get faster, or want to try some speedwork, this is the book where I lay out my speedwork secrets that I used to take 40 minutes off my marathon time and qualify for Boston.  It's on Amazon Kindle and also in Audio on Audible.  Links in the show notes and on my website. … Coming into last week's trip to Atlanta I had a couple amusing challenges.  I was out trail running with Ryan, caught a toe and did the classic tuck and roll to keep from face planting.  But when I stopped rolling I was right in the middle of a giant poison ivy patch.  I'm super allergic to poison ivy.  It was a hot day.  We were miles from the trail head.  I had to get on a plane later in the day. When we were coming back we passed a garage where I guy was hosing out school buses with a high-pressure water hose.  So, we went over and got him to hose me down. It was very refreshing!  I scrubbed off as well as I could when I got home before heading for the airport.  Then I'm sitting in the airport and a crown comes loose on one of my molars.  So here I am, getting ready to go to Atlanta to be on stage and engaged.  I'm losing a tooth and there's a good chance I'm going to swell up into a giant, puss-y rash in front of the whole company! Thankfully the bus wash and quick shower were able to mitigate an uncontrolled dermatological explosion.  I got a couple itchy bits but nothing compared to what could have been.  Dodged a bullet there.  My tooth stayed put until Wednesday when I found it in a piece of pizza at lunch, but it didn't hurt and I was able to get it patched up when I got back.  See?  Things never turn out as bad as we imagine they will! Links are in the show notes and at RunRunLive.com … Well my friends we’ve made it to the summer solstice.  That time that is the official, astronomical beginning of summer.  The longest day up here in the northern hemisphere where the earth wobbles precariously, catches itself and begins the long, drunken careen back to winter.  If you’re in the southern hemisphere you can just switch all the words with their opposites.  For all the pagan sun worshippers out there you need to build some stone circles and do a little dance.  Maybe sacrifice something – like a six pack of lager.  If you don’t believe the earth is round, well there’s no hope for you.  If you want to have some fun ask random people basic astronomy questions, like “Does the earth orbit the sun or does the sun orbit the earth?”  Or “Name the planets?”  Then sit back and be surprised with the answers. It is getting warm up in my neck of the woods.  The deer flies are out. I’m adjusting to it as always.  For everything there is a season – Turn, Turn, Turn.  Mostly I’m just trying to get all my runs in and trying to keep all the balls in the air. I’m doing a lot of trail running and some mountain biking.  It’s all good.  Friday I hit the ski area next to my house and did some reps on my bike up the tubing hill.  It’s just about right for me to get to max effort at the top without blowing up or falling over.  Sunday I did 2 hours in the trails before going to have a father’s Day lunch with my Mom and brother. I’m a bit tired today.  We had one of those summer thunderstorm fronts role through at 3 in the morning.  Thunder and lightning cause Buddy the old wonder dog a lot of personal stress and he needs to share his unhappiness with me.  Sometimes he goes and hides in the bath tub.  Sometimes we’ll open the basement door and let him hide down there.  But usually he just wanders the house being miserable like last night. It’s summer.  What are you going to do?  I don’t mind running in the heat as long as I’m acclimated and kitted out for it.  I love running in a warm summer rain.  … I was down in Atlanta last week all week.  It was a series of all-hands type meetings where the whole company comes in.  I was on stage for some of it.  It’s a tiring week.  There’s the travel, the preparation, getting up to get my workouts in, being engaged all day and then socializing at night.  I did manage to get enough sleep to execute.  I did manage to get some sort of workouts in in the morning.  It was super-hot in Atlanta.  High 90’s with humidity.  Even in the morning I was soaked from running outside.  I told them the only thing keeping me from bursting into flames was the humidity.  We were down near Georgia Tech this time so I got to explore the tech campus on one run – which was fun.  I also got to go to a Braves game one night. Matt and I are going to talk a lot about mental training today in the interview.  Your mental engagement in the training and racing is as important as the physical engagement.  You can’t be successful unless you have both.  It’s that perfect combination of mental engagement and physical capabilities that makes you successful.  I think you can draw a parallel to your career.  If you hate what you’re doing and are not mentally engaged it doesn’t matter how good you are at it, you will still struggle.  The inverse is true as well.  If you are mentally engaged but don’t know what you’re doing it won’t work either.  One of the telltale signs that you aren’t mentally engaged in what you’re doing is whether the doing of it saps your energy or energizes you.  If you are fully, mentally bought in to a job you will have inexhaustible energy to pour into it.  Doing the work will give you energy.  If you’re in a position where doing the work exhausts you while you are doing the work then either the work or the people you’re working with are not for you.  There is a disconnect there.  Pay attention and see which way your energy meter runs when you’re doing the work. When I was jogging around the Tech campus I was listening to DirtDawg talk about the difference between a job, a career and a calling.  One of those differences is in the way your energy flows. Scott Zagarino is the mastermind behind the “1989TheStory.com” project, a historical account of the greatest triathlon race of all time. In the aftermath of the wonderful interview with protagonists Mark Allen and Dave Scott, I catch up with my old-time triathlon training partner, sponsor, and mentor to reflect not only on the significance of the Mark and Dave story, but how this athletic battle can translate into an assortment of life lessons and peak performance inspiration. Scott was a prominent figure in the triathlon scene for many years in the 80s and 90s. His entrepreneurial spirit ushered the sport into the modern era in many ways. He was the point man for huge sponsorship deals for the Hawaii Ironman, he dreamed up spectator-friendly competition formats and brought unique new events to life, and he was the first person to form a team of professional athletes under one sponsor and connected directly with his charity, Triathletes For Kids.
