She earned a Bachelor's in Arts in psychology from Wells College and completed her Master's in social work from Florida State University.  During her career, Ms. Bennett has demonstrated a passion in sharing her personal and professional experiences with others to serve marginalized individuals and prevent re-traumatization.  She has experience in directing child & youth service programs for the Department of the Navy with a history of providing program oversight and accountability in accordance with the Department of Defense, COA, & BGCA Requirements.  Additionally, she has consulted with schools on policy development and has managed residential treatment facilities and foster care programs.  Ms. Bennett is a lifelong learner and has provided education and support to foster families, facilitated psychoeducation programs for youth, responded to crisis hotline calls for the Department of Veterans Affairs, and trained behavioral healthcare professionals in the areas of human trafficking, suicide prevention, child trauma/maltreatment, motivational interviewing, racial trauma, cultural competency, and serving LGBT youth.     Trauma Informed Care In First Responders With Wendy Hummel

    Wendy is a seasoned law enforcement officer with over 24 years of experience. She started her career in 1996 as a Special Agent with the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS). She retired at the rank of Detective after 21 years of service from the Wichita Police Department where she spent a majority of her career working Persons Crimes Investigations. Wendy is currently the Health and Wellness Coordinator for the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office. Wendy is passionate about and committed to helping her fellow First Responders learn the tools of mindfulness, resiliency, as well as the importance of relationships, exercise, sleep, and nutrition to enhance their well-being and job performance. Wendy speaks to these topics from the perspective of direct experience and through the lens of a law enforcement spouse. Wendy’s belief is that all law enforcement agencies should provide resources to their employees so they can not only survive a career in law enforcement, but thrive well into retirement. Wendy holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice. She is a certified yoga instructor and Yoga for First Responders (YFFR) Ambassador. Wendy has taught hundreds of first responders YFFR classes, resiliency, and mindfulness classes. Wendy is also a trainer for the Pause First Academy. Wendy is an adjunct faculty member with the Criminal Justice Department at Wichita State University. She has been teaching collegiate level CJ classes since 1996. Wendy was awarded the 2018 Wichita Metro Crime Commission Law Enforcement Officer of the Year Award, the 2018 Crime Stoppers USA Coordinator of the Year Award, and was a 2019 Wichitalk presenter. Wendy has several articles published with PoliceOne on the topics of trauma, wellness, and female resiliency. Wendy enjoys doing anything outdoors, yoga, and spending time with her two daughters and husband.

    Reframing Mental Health: from mental illness to mental wellness with Sheri Hall

    Join us for this great conversation with Sheri Hall as she shares her expertise from years of experience as a certified peer specialist. Sheri Purpose Hall also shared with us one of her poems that gave Janell chills and left Heather speechless. Sheri Hall is a goal-oriented manager, a certified peer specialist in Kansas and Missouri, and an artistic creative with over ten years of experience in non-profit operations, arts administration, advocacy, community organizing, and team development. She has extensive experience with Fortune 500 and international companies in user acceptance testing (UAT), vendor management, and business analytics. She is the Interim CEO of Poetry for Personal Power. Sheri started with P3 as a Sponsored Artist in 2012. During her time with the agency, she has worked to solidify relationships with community partners, developed a peer support program for the organization with an agency certification curriculum; developed agency processes; and assisted in writing grants that have yielded over $750,000 in agency funds. Artistically, Sheri Purpose Hall is a highly decorated writer and performance artist and founder of East of Red ArtHouse. She has four books: “Mélange du Femme Noir” (2019), "Black Girl Shattered" (2017); “Chosen for Both” (2015); and a workbook "Writing Wrongs: Writing to Heal" (2016) which won an award from Bike for the Brain. She is the 2020 National Spoken Word Awards Female Artist of the Year, 2019 Charlotte Street Generative Performing Artist Awardee and previous 2-year Studios Resident, and an Arts KC Inspiration Grant recipient (2017/2019).     Breathing into the belly - one of the easiest protective factors

    Join us in this great conversation with Terra Scott from Terra Sol Healing Arts. Terra is an integrative healing artist, which means she uses techniques and tools she has gathered along her journey to meet the needs of clients and to truly get to and address the root cause of disease. “I am an artist and I am a healer, but the true message is that healing is an art and we are never healed or unhealed but in a constant state of healing. I create safe sacred spaces for pain to be felt, processed and transmuted. When we quit suppressing and instead feel and practice breath work, we come down from the panic of the mind and back into the body, and our spirit wakes as well.” Terra shares some easy techniques to implement as protective factors as well as a little surprise at the end of the episode!     We had the opportunity to have a conversation with Dawn Robinson, Licensed Specialist Clinical Social Worker(LSCSW). This is an excellent resource on how to recognize signs of PTSD and how to learn body regulation skills to help with symptoms of PTSD. Join us to hear why Michelle's brain gets angry and all sorts of other great information. During her undergraduate education Dawn worked within hospice care and with a dropout prevention program. After obtaining her graduate degree she worked at a community health center with families involved in the foster care, adoption, and juvenile justice systems. In 2005 she opened her private practice where she now sees a variety of clients including mental health professionals, first responders, and military personnel. Throughout her career she has specialized in the treatment of trauma and continues to do so in her current practice.     We talked with Juan Baez and Misty Powers they are Problem Gambling Specialist for the Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services. regarding Problem Gambling Awareness Month. Juan previously worked in the gaming industry as a Training Specialist and was responsible for the training of all casino employees in the responsible gaming program. Prior to that, Juan worked as a Targeted Case Manager for a behavioral health agency. Juan is currently working on his addictions counseling credential at Fort Hays State University. He also serves on several committees for the National Council on Problem Gambling and the Midwest Consortium on Problem Gambling. Misty has a range of experiences that include Executive Director of a Nursing Home for Mental health serving the SPMI population. She also has worked in law enforcement as a Detention Officer. Misty holds her B.G.S in Criminal Justice and Sociology as well as an M.S in counseling from Fort Hays State University with an emphasis on family as well as drug and alcohol therapy.
