Business owners across Ireland are deeply concerned over the swathe of upcoming legislative changes in 2024. That's according to HRLocker, a leading provider of global HR compliance solutions for mid-sized, scaling and international businesses, which surveyed 500 Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in December. The survey highlights growing concern over the financial strain and administrative challenges posed by the new laws. Red tape and rising costs According to the survey, Irish SMEs are facing a challenging environment, with half (50%) reporting that the impending legislative changes will negatively impact their growth and recruitment plans. Additionally, 40% of businesses anticipate a significant rise in administrative costs due to the introduction of new compliance requirements. The survey also reveals that 62% of SMEs expect their operational efficiency to be compromised, as resources are increasingly diverted towards managing regulatory demands, while 46% anticipate it will lead to a substantial increase in operational costs. This shift in focus from core business activities to compliance and administration is a major concern for 33% of surveyed businesses, who believe it will hinder their ability to innovate and adapt in a competitive market. With such a landscape, SMEs are bracing for an environment where navigating legislative complexities could become as critical as managing their day-to-day operations, potentially impacting their long-term growth and competitiveness. This surge in red tape is particularly burdensome for smaller enterprises, where efficient resource allocation is crucial. Of those employing less than 20 people, one in eight (12.2%) expressed that the new legislation threatened the viability of their business. The necessity to navigate a complex web of new regulations and compliance measures is looming large, threatening to divert critical resources from core business activities to procedural adherence. This shift poses a substantial risk to the sector's agility and growth, leading many SMEs to adopt a more cautious stance on expansion and recruitment, potentially slowing down the overall momentum of business development in the Irish market. When asked about an increase in the Cost of Business Grant, 64% of respondents stated they do not believe it will offset their rising operational costs. Exposed industries The legislative changes slated for 2024 are poised to impact various industries differently, with some facing more acute challenges. In the Hospitality Sector, 68% of respondents expressed some sense of apprehension regarding the Minimum Wage Increase and the upcoming Living Wage Implementation. This concern stems from the sector's heavy reliance on minimum wage workers. Meanwhile, 54% of those in the Retail Industry expressed significant concern over the increased administrative load, particularly in managing enhanced leave benefits and adapting to changes in wage structures. In contrast, 28% of SMEs in the IT Sector are anticipating substantial challenges associated with the Auto-Enrollment Pension Scheme. "While we welcome these legislative updates and the improvements they will bring to employee welfare, it's crucial to address the considerable pressure they place on SMEs, the backbone of our economy," says Crystel Rynne, COO at HRLocker. "Greater support for these businesses is essential. See more stories here.

On this episode, we sit down with Taylor Mazdra, Senior Project Manager with Federal Initiatives, to discuss the upcoming Small Business Grant Program. This $10 million program is funded through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) and is intended to help Missouri small businesses recover from the financial struggles of the COVID-19 pandemic.
After graduating from business school, I started a job at Charles Schwab. I had a great time working alongside some wonderful and smart people. As I progressed into leadership roles, I found that to keep progressing I would have to make several lateral moves. That was a bit of a turn-off for me with my entrepreneurial spirit. What I also noticed was a lot of the financial advisors, financial managers, and wealth managers out there, didn't run their businesses in a way that I felt was the most advantageous for small business owners. Thus, with a particular focus on helping small business owners with their money management needs, in 2014 I resigned from my job and started Three Oaks Wealth. Our firm works with a lot of small business owners and our core strength is to assist them during periods of transition. When an owner is considering exiting their business, there are a few paths they can take but the most important question we help them answer is how to maximize their exit and reduce their tax liability. No matter what stage your business is in, good exit planning is simply good business planning in general. The core two areas to start with are to get personal expenses out of the business and then to establish processes that remove the owner from the daily business operations as much as possible. The reason we exist as a firm is to help clients get to the best place financially for their circumstances. Being an entrepreneurial person myself, I get fired up working with entrepreneurs who came up with an idea and took the risk of launching something new to the market. This is why we are passionate about helping people with their financial planning -- so that they can live their best life. Today we don't cross over much into general business consulting because that's not our area of expertise. We get some of those questions during our interactions, but our primary focus is to get clients in the best financial place we can. Resources Shared: Three Oaks WealthGrow Money Business PodcastThryv

If you are a small business hoping for a grant from California to stay alive during the COVID-19 lockdown, you need to listen to this podcast. The state has chosen to work with third-party financial institutions to transfer the funds to banks, but those organizations are asking applicants to violate basic good practices for maintaining security. Moreover, some business banks have internal security mechanisms that prevent the connections being made between the state and the banks. You can do this safely, but you need to take precautions. The Governor announces the launch of the Back to Business Grant program website. And, a look how the pandemic has changed the way we grieve. Then, part two of our conversation on the history of racial injustice.Plus, in today's book club – Civil war soldiers included some women disguised as male soldiers as we learn in Shelby Harriel's “Behind the rifle.”Segment 1:Small businesses in Mississippi that suffered losses from the Coronavirus can begin applyingtoday for a new grant. The Back to Business Mississippi Grant Program will be open to small businesses with 50 employees or less using funds from the CARES Act. Businesses can apply for up to 25 thousand dollars for expenses related to COVID-19. Governor Tate Reeves announced the Back to Business website during his daily press briefing yesterday, noting that the pandemic has been an economic emergency for the state. The COVID-19 death total is nearing 900 as the state enters its fourth month of the active cases and deaths. All throughout Mississippi, those who have lost loved ones, whether by COVID or otherwise, are having to adapt the way they grieve. Steve Holland, owner of Holland Funeral Directors in Tupelo, tells our Ashley Norwood things have changed since the arrival of the coronavirus. In his almost 50 years in the funeral business, the former state representative says he never imagined a time like this.Segment 2:On June 1st, President Donald Trump addressed the nation from the Rose Garden before proceeding through Lafayette Park to St. John's Episcopal Church. In the moments prior, protesters were forced to retreat the ground surrounding the park they had occupied while demonstrating most of the day. In the days that followed, two distinct narratives emerged about the events of that evening - the one seen through images and videos on newcasts and through social media platforms; and the one promoted by the White House. We return to our conversation with Jackson State University professor of History Dr. Robby Luckett to look closer at how this practice of manipulating the narrative traces back to the Civil Rights Era.Segment 3:More than two and a half million men fought in the civil war … And so did some women disguised as male soldiers. Why were they there and how did they pull it off? Shelby Harriel is the author of Behind the Rifle: Women Soldiers in Civil War Mississippi. My first question to her? How many women soldiers were there? See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
