POPULARITY
Known for her dramatic intensity and often-dark, broodingly romantic compositions, Tori Amos has perhaps unfairly gotten a reputation for being very, very serious. To be fair, sometimes she is (and we love it!). However, contrary to popular belief, when you take a closer look, Tori also has an extremely funny side. Her particular tongue-in-cheek brand of wit often translates directly into key songs that provide moments of oppositional levity and sweet relief amidst some of her most emotionally-searing sonic landscapes. Tori Amos' “Silly Songs” have always been a part of the fabric of her musical worlds and are well-documented, but they were officially named in 1996 with the release of several b-sides that directly contradicted the more bleak album tracks from the legendary Boys For Pele. Songs like “Graveyard”, “Toodles Mr. Jim”, and “That's What I Like Mick (The Sandwich Song”) gave listeners a warm, welcomed glimpse of Tori's slightly left of center sense of humor, while still fully highlighting her musical chops. Whether she's almost running over an angel, smacking down George Bush Jr with a sassy “who's your daddy?” or chatting up God to confess her foodie sins, it is important to remember Tori is not afraid to be a ‘lil silly (as beautifully evidenced in her most recent release: the whimsical new music for her New York Time best-selling children's book Tori and the Muses). So keep your hoochie, program your sodas and join Kristen, Matt and Joey in the Faerie Workshop to explore the magical, playful world of Tori Amos' Silly Songs, where laughter and joy are an inevitability, and where a wide variety of artisanal baked goods are essential to the narrative.MM playlistKK playlist JV playlist

Dear subscribers of The Page 1 Challenge:This week, instead of hearing the first page of a book, you're going to hear this year's annual Silly Christmas song that I make for my grandchildren. It seems that posting it here is the easiest way to make it easy for them to listen to on a suitable device (since CDs are not a thing any more). In case you're curious, this is just the latest in a long line of goofy songs, such as:"I'm Dreaming Of A Green Pickle" (to the tune of I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas)"Old Banana" (to the tune of Copa Cabana)"Some Honey in His Oatmeal Bowl" (to the tune of Somebody That I used to Know)"When I Snore" (to the tune of When I Go - the Anna Kendricks cup song)"I Want Some Brand New Underwear for Christmas" (to the tune of I want a Hippopotamus for Christmas)You get the idea. Sorry for the deviation from the usual show. Our guest today, Fred McNaughton (known as Phredd), has been with one of our local Christian radio stations since 1984! Early in his career, Phredd discovered that kids didn't really know how to worship, because they were never taught! Knowing that the “joy of the Lord is our strength” and raising 8 children of his own, Phredd set out to change this using the talents God entrusted to him. Phredd will tell you that laughter brings down walls and helps us to connect - and today he will share with you some of the songs that have helped him do this, and in turn have helped the next generation know how to worship with their whole being. Ready to hear how laughter and fun teaches our children to worship? Let's go… FRED MCNAUGHTON is the morning show host and station manager of Central PA's Christian Radio Station WJTL. Fred is also the Children's Performer, “Phredd”. For the past 25+ years Phredd has been writing, producing and performing joyful, happy music for kids and families. His songs “Awooga”, “Don't Take Your Dog To Church”, “Floating Zoo”, “The Coffee Song” and “My Mom is a Pirate” are favorites on the Kids Cookie Break (Saturday mornings on WJTL with host Lisa Landis) and staples of the 50+ Phredd shows performed every year at schools, churches, libraries, camps & other events. In addition to performing his own shows, Phredd is also a member of Steven Courtney and the Suitcase Musicians. Steven Courtney and Phredd are songwriting partners that have created many family favorites over the years including “42 Monkeys”, “Elmer's Electric Tricycle” and “Jump For Jesus”. Fred's current performance incarnation is PHREDD UKULELE ONE MAN BAND - Ukulele Flailing, Harmonica Wailing, Suitcase Drumming, Kazoo Hum-Humming, Ukulele Bundle of Joy! In their debut episode, Ben and Andrew travel back to 1993 (amazingly, considering they were both born years after) to the release of the first VeggieTales release: "Where's God When I'm S-Scared?". They traverse the two stories Tales from the Crisper and Daniel and the Lion's Den, as well as the first ever Silly Song, "The Water Buffalo Song", of which Andrew attempts to re-enact. During their exploration, they also answer pressing questions such as "Can God shoot slime out of his ears?", "Do vegetables need to shower?", and "Is pizza biblical canon?". ||Connect with us on Instagram @ThePodcastersWhoDontDoAnything | podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/tpwdda
Animal crackers now acquired, Ben and Andrew watch "God Wants Me To Forgive Them?!?" including The Grapes of Wrath, Larry's Lagoon, and one-off skit The Forgive-O-Matic from VeggieTales' second episode released in 1994. In this episode we discuss everyone’s favourite Christian vegetables. Of course we're talking Bob, Larry, Junior, that gourd with the gold tooth, and all the other healthy funny snacks. We talk about the creators Phil Vischer and Mike Nawrocki and how they went from a church puppet ministry to one of the most successful animation studios of the nineties. We talk about the ups and downs of the series, its effect on popular culture, and reminisce about our favourite moments. We also play a Silly Songs quiz. As always we are not experts, we just google this stuff.
