One manifesto pledge of the incoming Labour government was to provide over 3000 new nurseries in empty school classrooms in England. The first 300 of these will open by September and offer an average of 20 places each. Nuala McGovern speaks to Bridget Phillipson, Secretary of State for Education, about this announcement and also about the current state of provision and funding for children with special education needs. The family of a woman who is dangerously ill with anorexia is challenging a previous court decision which ruled she cannot be force fed. The family want the Court of Protection judge to make a new decision which would allow a hospital to act so that her life can be saved. We speak to the woman's aunt, and also hear from MIchelle Wright, who says she was in a similar position, on an end of life programme in a hospice, but who has now been recovered for 15 years and is speaking out for the first time. Plus we hear from law and philosophy academic Dr Camillia Kong who explains what will be considered as the Court makes its decisions in the patient's ‘best interests'.Over the last few weeks Woman's Hour has been talking to some of the writers who have been longlisted in the Women's Prize for Fiction and Non-fiction this year. Well this morning, the shortlist for the fiction prize has just been announced. Nuala is joined by the author and Chair of Judges Kit de Waal.Echo vom Eierstock is Switzerland's first feminist yodelling choir. Elena Kaiser is their founder and joins Nuala to discuss where her love of yodelling came from, and why she is challenging the make-up of traditional yodelling choirs and songs.

When he was 7 years old, a friend's father was in the entertainment business. Hanging out at rehearsals and on the tour buses sold Matt on the idea of being a musician, or at the very least, a drummer. All this lead to spending his high school years at Fort Hayes vocational school for music and Capital University Conservatory of Music for college studying under drum instructor Bob Breithaupt. The musical diversity in Columbus gave Matt the chance to play with many great players and learning many different styles – from Big Band (Vaughn Weister's Famous Jazz Orchestra) and Brazilian to Afro-Cuban and Fusion. All the while, he was doing his share of gigs with original rock bands and top 40 bands. Matt moved to Nashville in the summer of 1999. Working as a freelance drummer based in Nashville has taken him to all 50 states in the U.S. and most of Canada, as well as overseas to Europe, Asia, The Middle East and The Caribbean. As well as the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Matt has performed in great local venues like the Ryman Auditorium, Mercy Lounge, 3rd and Lindsley, The 5 Spot, The Sutler, The Basement, The Wildhorse Saloon, and many clubs on lower Broadway.  Matt has toured both regionally and nationally, with the Adam and Shannon Wright, Mark Selby, Eddy Raven, Billy Dean, Stephen Simmons, Three Lane, Whiskey Cash & Roses, Michelle Wright - (throughout Canada), Julie Roberts, and The Frontmen of Country which is Larry Stewart of Restless Heart, Richie McDonald of Lonestar, Tim Rushlow of Little Texas. From 2009 to 2017 Matt was the full time drummer for the band Savannah Jack. He played percussion on their first studio record in 2010 opposite Steve Ferrone on drums. For their second studio record in 2015, Matt was the drumset and percussion player in the studio. In the studio, Matt has had the pleasure of working with talented producers including Eric Fritsch, Teddy Morgan, Jim Reilley and Brent Maher. Artist he's recorded with in the studio have included Sheryl Crow, legendary songwriter Buzz Cason and actor Kevin Costner. In 2015, Matt started a podcast for drummers called "Working Drummer", an interview based podcast that maintains a focus on the drummer that makes a living at his or her craft. Along with the help of co-host Zack Albetta, the podcast has a growing audience throughout the world with more listeners every week. www.workingdrummer.net   *******SUBSCRIBE/RATE/REVIEW!!! www.richredmond.com/listen     The Rich Redmond Show is about all things music, motivation and success. May 2024 marks the 50th anniversary of Andy Kim's “Rock Me Gently,” a song absolutely nobody wanted to sign, produce, or play on the radio in the beginning, but here we are, being in top-rated shows, millions of spins around the world, and no stopping all these years later. The record was a massive hit in 1974, going all the way to Number 1 in the U.S. and Number 2 in the U.K. as part of its staggering four-month run on the charts. Even if you weren't alive back then to experience the song's inexorable pop pull, you've probably heard it since, on shows like Ray Donovan and Sex Education or commercials for the Jeep Liberty. And that's not even mentioning the 1989 cover by country artist Michelle Wright, nor the sample of “Rock Me Gently” that showed up in Mint Royale's “Take It Easy” 10 years later. Given its enduring appeal, one can easily forget that, at the time of “Rock Me Gently's” original release, Kim was already considered washed up in the music business. He was no longer the kid who had driven from his native Montreal to New York on a wing and a prayer to find work at the famous Brill building. The success that had followed included co-writing and singing on the Number 1 song of 1969, “Sugar Sugar” by The Archies, and shifting more than 1.5 million copies of his own take on the Phil Spector/Ronettes classic “Baby I Love You” the very same year. But by 1974, nobody wanted to know. Kim had to release “Rock Me Gently” on his own label, after turndowns from absolutely every producer and established record company he approached. In fact, it was a tough go at radio at first, but the writer who became his own producer of the song never believed in the word ‘no' to mean anything but another opportunity to create his own destiny. A variety of forces—including ever-shifting cultural currents and the death of his father—ensured that his career continued to have more than its share of ups and downs. And truth be told, it's never been in his nature to prioritize the spotlight of personal glory over the work anyway. But when you've touched so many people with your songs—your song in particular, the one with your name on it, that you put so much on the line to record and release—your fans won't let you fade into obscurity. At age 77, Kim finds himself in the enviable position of being hailed as an elder statesman of pop while enjoying a newfound relevance to contemporary audiences. “I Forgot To Mention,” his 2004 collaboration with one of those aforementioned fans, Ed Robertson of the Barenaked Ladies, got him named the Best Solo Indie Artist of the Year during Canadian Music Week. That paved the way for “comeback albums” like 2010's Happen Again and 2015's It's Decided, the latter of which put Kim on the Arts & Crafts label with hip latter-day artists like Feist, Chilly Gonzales, The Stills and Stars, thanks to Kevin Drew, founder of Arts & Crafts, showcasing his admiration for the iconic artist's timeless music. This collaboration brings together two generations of Canadian music talent, bridging the gap between past and present in the indie music scene. Drew's decision reflects not only his business acumen but also his deep appreciation for Kim's enduring musical legacy. And every year, his Andy Kim Christmas Show raises big money – over $2.5 million so far - for Toronto charities, thanks in part to support from a roster of talents that's included Broken Social Scene, Metric, Maestro Fresh Wes, Sarah Harmer, Sam Roberts, Lights, Rush's Alex Lifeson, Finger Eleven and Ron Sexsmith. Kim's name now hangs in a veritable mansion's worth of hallowed halls, including the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, the Songwriters Hall of Fame and Billboard's Hit Parade Hall of Fame. He also has his own spot of Canada's Walk of Fame. And last year, he received the ultimate honor by being made an officer of the Order of Canada, for his irreplaceable contributions to the cultural landscape of his country. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/east-coast-dna/message

His doctoral research included a project examining the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident of March 2011, one of the worst ever nuclear accidents. During this multidimensional work, Peter used unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV's) equipped with novel radiation detection systems to explore the meter-scale contamination trends as well as cutting-edge materials science methodologies to examine the microscopic fallout material that was released into the surrounding environment. Following a stint working in the nuclear industry and after having gained expertise in radiation detection systems and materials science, Peter obtained a highly prestigious Royal Academy of Engineering (RAEng) Research Fellowship in 2020. In this research, he works alongside other international experts in the field to develop novel sensory platforms for deployment across multiple applications. Dr Martin has established himself as an international expert in nuclear materials, radiation detection, reactor accident scenarios, and radiological release incidents arising from nuclear facilities. He is frequently invited to give talks on his areas of expertise around the world, and he has worked extensively with global media outlets to give expert commentary on topical issues across the nuclear sphere.

In this episode of InspectTech, guest host Michelle Wright talks with Todd Houlahan, Director of International Mining at Evident. In this discussion, Todd shares his expertise on X-ray fluorescence (XRF) testing and its applications in the mining NDT industry. Listen in as Todd shares about challenges and opportunities he's faced in the industry and his views on how XRF has evolved in the mining industry, from mineral exploration to the laboratory. Todd Houlahan graduated from the University of Newcastle, Australia in 1993 with a bachelor's degree in applied science (environmental) with a major in soils and hydrology. He then worked for 7 years as a contaminated land consultant in Australia and the UK with various companies before being introduced to handheld XRF in 2000 while remediating a Pb contaminated site in Sydney. From 2000–2004, he worked for a distributor of XRF analyzers in Australia and used handheld XRF as a consultant, a contractor, and in sales capacities on numerous geochem projects. From 2004–2008, Todd worked directly for a major XRF technology manufacturer and was integral in the mass introduction of modern X-ray tube-based units to the exploration and mining sector, supporting distributors and customers in the EMEA region. Since 2008, Todd has been the Director of International Mining at Evident and is now based out of Hertfordshire in the UK. For the past 22 years, he has dedicated his career to portable XRF (pXRF) applications in the minerals industry. His passion is best practice application of the technology, customer training, and unique and innovative pXRF applications.

Michelle Wright and I talk about how you can dive into your 40s, which is exactly what she did. We discuss the fit by 40s program she created for herself (and it's not what you think it is!), about how to be more than a mother, how depression caused her to learn what she needed, and why laughter is so important to our well-being.    This is the third in a 4-part finale for the show, and I'm so grateful to Michelle for letting me share it with you since we recorded it right after the Covid lockdowns began. It is the perfect final interview, and I know you will love our conversation as much as I did! Next week I'll share the 10 things I learned in my 40s.     Michelle Wright is a wife and a mother of two--a native Californian who now resides in Nevada. She is passionate about homemaking, homeschooling, and the power of self-care. Recently, she created a "she space" for herself--which is a space just for her that brings her joy, calm, and inspiration because she believes that with all that she is and that she does that she is worthy of being her #1 priority. A believer and follower of Jesus, Michelle believes we are here to live like we're alive so she created a community around the concept of Life-Giving Joy.    Michelle will be reviving her YouTube channel and starting a podcast later this year focused on emotional intelligence wellness, self-care, generational cycle breaking and motherhood. To connect with Michelle and get future updates, she asked that you email her at: michellenorelle7 AT gmail.com.    Please stay subscribed for any future updates.I'm planning another podcast for later this year that will continue to be focused on midlife women, so please connect with me on social media, or sign up for my newsletter at www.christymaguire.com to get further updates.

I'm popping in for an update about where I've been these last few years, and for a mini-episode on the art of quitting. I recently turned 50 and have created the show's finale. Tune in tomorrow for a new interview with Skye Pillsbury and next week with Michelle Wright. After that I'll do a final episode on what I learned in my 40s.   So often we reach our 40s and have the desire to quit things, but Annie Duke, the author of the book “Quit” says because quitting isn't celebrated we don't have role models for it. I've been thinking about this a lot, since I stopped posting episodes after the pandemic started. I hope it gives you something to think about in your own life.   I'm really excited to be doing this, but I'd be lying if I didn't add that I'm also feeling a bit wistful. I am planning another podcast for later this year that will continue to be focused on midlife women, so please connect with me on social media, or sign up for my newsletter at www.christymaguire.com to get further updates. On this week's special episode of The Georgia Politics Podcast, we examine the life and legacy of the late Barbara Walters with WSB's Michelle Wright. Barbara Walters blazed a trail for female journalists in the industry and inspired the likes of Jane Pauley, Katie Couric and Diane Sawyer. Walters big break came when she joined The Today Show in 1961 and was named co-host of the show in 1974, becoming the first female co-host of a U.S. news program. She would go on to sign a five-year, $5 million contract with ABS, making her the highest paid news anchor – male or female – in the United States. Throughout her career, Walters would interview every sitting U.S. President and first lady from Richard and Pat Nixon to Barack and Michelle Obama. Some of her most famous, and sometime notorious, interviews include Fidel Castro, Anwar Sadat, Katharine Hepburn, Sean Connery, Monica Lewinsky, Hugo Chávez, Vladimir Putin, and Bashar al-Assad. Perhaps her most noteworthy accomplishment was creating the talk show “The View” in 1997, which is still on air with ABC today. The all-female hosted program brings together women from different generations, political views and upbringing to dive into cultural and political events of the day. WSB's Michelle Wright joins the show to talk specifically about Walters's signature pull-no-punches style, “scoop” journalism, and impact on women in her profession. Walters passed away in December of 2022 and The Georgia Politics Podcast is proud to honor her legacy and contributions to political commentary and journalism with this special episode.
