My guest this week is luxury fashion designer Ricardo Bernardino. I'm speaking to Ricardo mere weeks before his debut at Paris Fashion Week, where he will unveil his new “Sea to Silk Collection.” This bright and bold luxury collection features the artwork of Michel Deville, who was inspired by the coral reefs of the Indian Ocean. Michel has been painting for 70 years, but has refused to sell any of his paintings because he considers them all as his children. So, how did one chance jogging encounter transform Michel's art into a collection by first-time designer Ricardo? Welcome back to the Season Seven Premiere of Storytime in Paris! My first guest is Cynthia Newberry Martin and the moment I read her latest novel “The Art of Her Life,” I knew I needed to introduce you, dear listeners, to her work. Cynthia won the Gold Medal in Literary Fiction at the 2020 Independent Publisher Book Awards and the 14th Annual National Indie Excellence Award for Fiction for her first novel “Tidal Flats.” In “The Art of Her Life,” our main character Emily fell in love with the painting Breakfast by Henri Matisse as a young child, and her love of this painting has shaped, guided, and organized the way she views the world ever since. Through Emily's eyes, we learn the magic of art, the influence of color, and the power of connection. This novel nestled into my heart, wrapped itself around, and has stayed there like a gentle swaddle. https://www.cynthianewberrymartin.comhttps://www.instagram.com/cynthianewberrymartin/?hl=en https://www.facebook.com/cynthianewberrymartinwriter/https://howwespendourdays.substack.com/ Find Us OnlineWebsite: https://www.parisundergroundradio.com/storytimeinparisFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/parisundergroundradioInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/parisundergroundradio/ CreditsHost and Producer: Jennifer Geraghty. Every episode will feature five questions, asked by you, our authors' biggest fans, and answered live on air. Then, our authors will treat us to a reading of an excerpt from their book. Who knows? Maybe you'll even be inspired to write your own Great French Novel. Happy listening!

This week, my guest is Victor Schegin, a native Parisian whose first foray into the art world was as a 15-year-old street artist. As a painter, Victor explores vulnerability through his portraiture, often blending emotive, introspective models with bright, bold colors and abstract elements. Victor is generous with his time and talent, offering tips and tricks to his followers online. He is also an art teacher and has created a Facebook group of artists helping and supporting other artists numbering over 120,000. In our conversation, Victor shares how he fell in love with painting and what it took to finally get him to pursue it full-time. He tackles some of the biggest ideas in the art world today: where is the line between street art and vandalism, what does it take to be great, and how does that corrolate to a career where you've “made it.” https://www.instagram.com/seehundart/?hl=enhttps://seehundart.com/ https://twitter.com/seehundart Join us on Patreon: patreon.com/parisundergroundradio Find Us OnlineWebsite: https://parisundergroundradio.com/cityofmusesFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/parisundergroundradioInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/parisundergroundradio/ CreditsHost and Producer: Jennifer Geraghty. https://parisundergroundradio.com/jenniferfoxgeraghty @jennyphoria; Website: http://jennyphoria.comMusic CreditsBeyond Inspiration juqboxmusic License: 1F36635C-8CE84C39-98B2531B-FEAA8727 About UsWho will be the world's next Salvador Dali, Thierry Mugler, or Josephine Baker, launching a new wave of the avant-garde? This week, I had the pleasure of speaking with Melanie Furtado. Melanie is a Canadian sculptor and art educator who won this year's prestigious Médaille Bronze at the Salon des Artistes Français. She first grabbed my attention with her fantastic “Women: States of Being” series, in which she showcases naked women of diverse ages, races, and body types in states of quiet contemplation. She creates her sculptures by adding pieces, little by little, one at a time, leaving the textures of these pieces of clay and her fingerprints as part of the final piece of art. While the focus may start on the body, its the depth of emotion she captures in the faces that really draws you in.In our conversation, Melanie shares what draws her to scultpure and the human form, which body part is her favorite to sculpt, how the best things about Paris are also the worst, and so much more.https://www.melaniefurtado.comhttps://www.instagram.com/melanie.furtado/Join us on Patreon: patreon.com/parisundergroundradio Find Us OnlineWebsite: https://parisundergroundradio.com/cityofmusesFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/parisundergroundradioInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/parisundergroundradio/ CreditsHost and Producer: Jennifer Geraghty. https://parisundergroundradio.com/jenniferfoxgeraghty @jennyphoria; Website: http://jennyphoria.comMusic CreditsBeyond Inspirationjuqboxmusic License: 1F36635C-8CE84C39-98B2531B-FEAA8727 About UsWho will be the world's next Salvador Dali, Thierry Mugler, or Josephine Baker, launching a new wave of the avant-garde? My guest this week is best-selling, award-winning author Jennifer Cody Epstein. Jennifer's latest novel "The Madwomen of Paris" is a work of historical fiction set in Paris's 19th-century Salpêtrière, a notorious women's asylum. Here, women are treated for hysteria by world famous Doctor Jean-Martine Charcot, often publicly, on stage and under hypnosis. When Josephine is admitted to the hospital in a fit of rage and amnesia, she is placed under the care of Laure, a former-resident-turned-attendant. They quickly form a strong connection that forces them to separate truth from fiction in all facets of their lives… which may include murder. In our conversation, Jennifer shares what drew her to this particular place, period and story. She discusses the power of hysteria, hypnosis, and of beauty, how she played with perception, and why there are no heroes in her book. LPX is a Swiss army knife of art, wild color, and enthusiastic, deeply-refreshing conversations. If you could bottle up some of what she's got, you'd have the secret formula to creating joy. As for the nuts and bolts, this shenius co-founded the hypercool record label Neon Gold with her friend Derek Davies and has starred in (at least) two bands I love, MS MR and now as LPX. In this chat we talk about the time Christine and the Queens opened for her, what being an “aggressive colorist” vintage junkie is, the power of language, and then she coins the phrase "global charm bracelet” in relationship to her wardrobe. My guest this week is award-winning author and screenwriter Stef Penney, whose novel "The Tenderness of Wolves" won Costa Book of the Year, Theakston's Crime Novel of the Year, and has been translated into 30 languages. Her latest novel, "The Beasts of Paris,” takes us to Paris in 1870 at the onset of the Franco-Prussian War and its subsequent revolution. We visit Paris, not through the eyes of political or military strategists, but through some of her more marginalized characters: gay men, people of color, neuro-divergents, women, and those questioning their gender identity. As we drift between the zoo animals of the Jardin des Plantes to the women's asylum to the homes of the bourgeoisie and makeshift hospitals, we discover who the true beasts are. In our conversation, Stef shares who inspired her main characters and why they were so important to her, what it meant to her to focus on those often overlooked in wartime retellings, love stories and more. Then, she treats us to a reading from her book. stefpenney.com Join our Book Club: patreon.com/parisundergroundradioFind Us OnlineWebsite: https://www.parisundergroundradio.com/storytimeinparisFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/parisundergroundradioInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/parisundergroundradio/ CreditsHost and Producer: Jennifer Geraghty.
