Season 4: Susan Gibson Still Loves Her Wide Open Spaces

Singer-songwriter Susan Gibson was born in Minnesota but spent most of her formative years in Amarillo, Texas. Growing up, she and her family would often drive between Amarillo and Missoula, Montana, where she drew comfort and inspiration from the wide open spaces along their route.  Ultimately, Gibson took to music and the continuum of movement through those scenic vistas would become an essential muse that, in the early 1990s, would end up on a cassette tape of her early songs. “I didn't start writing songs to become a professional songwriter at all,” Gibson recently told me on the latest episode of The Load Out music podcast.  Recorded way back in 1992, that cassette tape had a gem that, not-so-ironically, was called “Wide Open Spaces.” The song ended up on a demo tape for Gibson's former Amarillo-based band, The Groobees, which they sent to legendary music producer Lloyd Maines in hopes he would produce a record for them. Maines connected with the lyrics of “Wide Open Spaces,” a tale of a daughter leaving home. But he thought it would be an ideal match for the voice of his daughter Natalie, who had just joined a little country outfit called The Dixie Chicks (now The Chicks). And the rest, as they say, is history. The Chicks released the album Wide Open Spaces in 1998 and the title track went on to become a smash hit around the world and one of the most impactful country songs of the past 50 years. But Gibson has no remorse about one of her songs turning into a hit for another artist. She not only adores The Chicks as a band, but is grateful that her inspiration remains so appreciated. “I'm proud that I captured something at 24-years-old that still feels true to me today,” she said. “That idea of being a tumbleweed is really attractive to me. I lean into that part of the job…I love kind of a gypsy-ish lifestyle.” Gibson is realistic about the song, playfully calling it her “lightning strike lottery ticket,” but it's important to understand the context of just how big “Wide Open Spaces” became. Not only was it named the Country Music Association Single of the Year in 1999, but it won Gibson the American Songwriter Professional Country Songwriter of the Year award in early 2000, along with a BMI award the previous year. Despite the acclaim, however, Gibson has remained grounded and committed to her craft—writing, playing, singing. She is highly respected across the industry as a songwriter which is on display throughout her catalogue of seven albums and a variety of singles.  Her last full-length record—2019's The Hard Stuff—dug deep into her personal journey. It examined Gibson's battle with alcoholism (she's been sober since 2010), and we spoke at length about the signals she received that led her to finally giving up the bottle.  “I had all of the stuff that you are imaging happened when you have a drinking problem,” she said. “The lying, cheating, stealing, blaming other people for your own mistakes. It makes good relationships incredibly hard when you are an alcoholic.” A hand injury suffered in a 2010 car accident turned the light on, leading her to realize that—without her physical talents—she had no music.  “It's the best thing that's ever happened to me,” she said. “Getting sober has changed my life profoundly.” Thus, today Gibson is clear-eyed, loving the craft of playing music every single day; being thankful for moments in time like writing “Wide Open Spaces,” and the experiences that drove her to follow an artist's path.  Enjoy an amazing conversation with a terrific songwriter and wonderful person, Susan Gibson, on the latest Load Out music podcast.

The Business Side of Music

It's been a solid 12 years, packed with earned life experiences and songwriting since Chad Harvey has released a new studio album. 2008 saw the release of his Get Lit album which provided a platform to tour through 2011. Initially to Harvey, that was a good thing. “The live shows to me are what it's all about. That is where you connect with your fans and I lay it all out there on the line and don't hold anything back—whether we are playing for five people or 500 people.” The relentless schedule started to show its weight and while being nudged by the label (Indie 500 Records) to start tracking the follow-up album, Harvey admits: “I was getting to the point of burn out; playing several nights a week while having to still maintain a day job to survive in Nashville.” He knew some rejuvenation was needed and took a two-week trip to Australia. On his flight back to the States he met his future wife and now they share two children with a full life. . . Except for one thing, Harvey exclaims: “Music!”  With his creative cannon loaded and idea book bursting with new song titles, Harvey tracked Run From the Sound in 2015 alongside his longtime GRAMMY®-nominated producer Marc Johnson.  Every once in awhile a singer-songwriter comes along that moves people to action—not necessarily a message to politicians for peace in wartime but instead a holler to the wallflowers to grab a cold beer and cut the rug at the local honky-tonk, sometimes a call to an estranged lover to come home—Chad Harvey is a songwriter whose songs do all of these things and more.   Chad Harvey is a true American original born in Evansville, and raised in nearby Lynnville—that's Southern Indiana to the uninformed—just down the highway from Indiana's most famous musical export, John Mellencamp. . . an artist to whom Harvey has been compared. However, Harvey is far from a knock-off, Harvey delivers his self-penned emotive stories with an inimitable whiskey-stained voice. “Heyburn,” inspired by the small town of Heyburn, Idaho, spotlights Harvey's ability to capture the voice of the many living in small towns across America and it's because he was one of them. “This song idea came from a friend of mine, Craig Smith. He was traveling through Idaho and stopped for the night in Heyburn. He called me that night and told me about the place and how there was not much going on in the town, and how he imagined that if he lived there, he would want to get out. This struck a chord with me as it reminded me exactly of my hometown of Lynnville, Indiana. A small town of about 500 people in Southwestern Indiana that was built in the middle of the coal mines. Growing up there, all I wanted to do is get out and see what else was out there in the world.”     A gifted writer and performer equipped with a six-string Gibson and a Midwestern drawl, Harvey also sports rough and tumble good looks reminiscent of a young Elvis Presley and a cool swagger that calls to mind another Hoosier native named James Dean. Through his songs, he says what he means and means what he says.  With aspirations greater than what Indiana had to offer, Chad fled to Nashville, TN where he enrolled at Belmont University to “learn about the record business;” however, he found himself learning more about the music business by meeting people, listening to classic records, and watching bands perform live in local clubs.   On one cold winter night, a pivotal moment happened, Chad tuned in to Austin City Limits to watch John Prine perform; and on the same show, he discovered an artist who would help guide his musical direction: Todd Snider. Considering this a sign, Harvey picked up and moved to Austin to walk the same Texas soil as his heroes and to develop his own songwriting chops and performing skills.    Through Snider, Harvey was introduced to the Texas music scene that included Jerry Jeff Walker, Jack Ingram, Guy Clark, Chris Knight, Billy Joe Shaver, Charlie Robison, Bruce Robison to name a few. Chad proceeded to play every honky-tonk, voodoo haunt, and BBQ joint with a makeshift stage on the same trail blazed by Steve Earle and Townes Van Zandt years earlier including being a regular at the prestigious Kent Finlay's open mic night at Cheatham Street Warehouse in San Marcos, TX.  Chad Harvey eventually moved back to Indiana to record his first full-length effort, Get Lit, backed by an amazing cast of supporting musicians including Mellencamp-alum Dane Clark on drums, GRAMMY®-winner Lloyd Maines on steel, and three-time GRAMMY®-winner Larry Franklin on fiddle. The end result was an astonishingly cool slice of Americana. ‘Get Lit' was released in 2008 and broke into the Americana top 100 and Chad toured extensively throughout the southeast and Midwest supporting the release.  “Run From The Sound,” the title track off the new album, brings an introspective Tom Petty lyrical approach with a Mike Campbell-style approach to the guitar tracks. “This song was somewhat of a surprise to me,” notes Harvey.  “When I arrived at the Pop Machine Studio to start tracking the record, Marc Johnson (Producer) said that he wanted me to hear something. He played me the song and I was immediately drawn to it. After listening to it a few times, I realized what the song was about. He wrote it about a relationship I had been in several years before. The song captured everything about it. I added a few of my touches to the song and we cut it.”   The vitality of Chad's live shows is captured in Run From the Sound standouts such as “Heyburn,” “Rescue Me,” “Run From The Sound” and “Nashville Intermezzo.” Get in your pick-up truck, turn up the speakers as loud as they can go, and listen to Chad Harvey tell the truth…or at least something close to it. The opening number, "I Am Not Broken" is a necessary reminder that you're allowed forgiveness--especially from yourself. The past can be a tool and not a burden. The late night spacy hymnal "Orion" is prime McClure while "Holiday Blown" is a heartaching character sketch about addiction, family strife & dynamics, military PTSD, and depression.During this interview, we talk about recording Looking Up in early 2020, how yoga & gardening have helped his songwriting process, his early days with The Great Divide, running from their legacy, Lloyd Maines, producing albums, and how becoming a mentor for young singer-songwriters has been rewarding and necessary. This episode's presenting partner is Desert Door Texas Sotol. Jarrod released his promising debut album West of East a year ago this past March. Produced by Texas legend Lloyd Maines, West of East sprawls with bluegrass-tinged numbers like the infectious "Red Bandana," the soaring picturesque soundscapes of "Panoramic View," and the bustling dive-bar hustler "Coyote."Be sure to check out the Blue Light compilation, Monday Night Lights. "Come Back Down", es una invitación a volver a casa tras estar demasiado tiempo fuera. What is it about Texas and it's reputation for gunslingin' killer guitar players? You know the old cliche' "something in the water?", well, this certainly applies to the Lone Star State...think of the guitarists that have emerged from here- Stevie Ray and Jimmie Vaughn, Eric Johnson, Billy Gibbons, David Holt, Charlie Sexton, and newer cats like Carter Arrington- etc..but way up at the top of that list is my guest today- Mr. David Grissom. A veteran of the John Mellencamp band, Joe Ely, Storyville and the Dixie Chicks, he's also appeared on many records as a session player and songwriter. I've known David for a long time as you'll hear- we toured together for a few months in the late 90's with BB King when I was in the Neville Brothers and he was in Storyville. In this interview we talk early days in Austin, string bending, influences, gear, Mellencamp, Lloyd Maines and steel guitar as an influence, Norman Blake, Ringo Starr, solo records etc...and much more. Couple of great little jams in here too! On a nice day in Austin I got in an Uber from the hotel and headed over to David's studio where we did this interview. Music Makers and Soul Shakers Podcast with Steve Dawson

My guest this week is the great Texas musician and icon of the recording world, Lloyd Maines. Best known as a pedal steel player, Maines is a multi-instrumentalist who has also performed and/or recorded playing dobro, electric and acoustic guitar, mandolin, lap steel guitar, and banjo. He toured and recorded as a member of the Joe Ely Band and has also played with Jerry Jeff Walker, Guy Clark, Butch Hancock, Terry Allen, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, and other Texas musicians. As the father of Natalie Maines, lead singer of the Dixie Chicks, he was instrumental in bringing the current lineup of bandmates together in 1995, which jump-started their sudden popularity and change in sound. Maines won a Grammy Award for Best Country Album in 2003 as producer of the Dixie Chicks' album, "Home". In this interview I speak with Dwight Adair, writer/director/producer at Seadra Productions. We talk about film and the color-grading experience of West Texas Muse, a film about Tommy Hancock. This documentary is 64 minutes long and was shot over a period of 10 years on SD video. There were quite a few special challenges in getting the movie finished. It was originally edited on a FCP3 system, and the movie included many old family movies and stills, all needing special color correction. Dwight did an amazing job of editing the story and building up the initial sound track. As you know, the devil is in the details with audio, so I want to give a special shout-out to Reed Hart for his dedication to reworking the soundtrack from start to finish to make it perfect. He truly has a intuitive feel for what sounsd right in a mix between words and music. The movie is being submitted to film festivals this year, but I believe there are plans to create DVDs so check back later on this if you are interested. I post and update when that occurs. Synopsis: West Texas Muse is a documentary about the Texas fiddler and songwriter Tommy Hancock, originally based in Lubbock as the house band/owner of the Cotton Club. The Cotton Club became well known as a premiere West Texas dance hall, holding as many as 1600 people, and provided an opportunity for famous musicians touring the Southwest and the West Coast to take a much-needed respite from their long bus rides. These famous performers included Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Bush, Don Walser, Merle Haggard, Hank Thompson, Ray Price, Freddy Fender, and many others. As Hancock became interested in hippies and LSD, he began a spiritual quest that not only changed his life and music, but influenced many well-known Texas musicians, some now based in Austin, such as Joe Ely, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Lloyd Maines, Jesse Taylor, and many others. It also changed the Cotton Club from being a dance hall for country music into something that more closely resembled the Armadillo World Headquarters in Austin, where cowboys, hippies, bikers, and persons of all descriptions learned to get along and enjoy various types of music. Hancock formed the Supernatural Family Band, and later, when he could no longer perform due to arthritis, he supported the Texana Dames with his songwriting and dancing. Musician, bandleader, songwriter, author, and father, Tommy Hancock now lives in Austin and is the subject of this 64-minute exploratory documentary about a wise, spiritual man who has much to say about life.

As a member of Austin's legendary Lost Gonzo Band, performing and recording with such musical visionaries as Jerry Jeff Walker, Michael Martin Murphey and Ray Wylie Hubbard, Livingston played an integral role in creating the music that first earned Austin the designation of 'Live Music Capital of the World'. Achieving recognition in their own right, the Gonzos' self-titled debut record was named by 'Rolling Stone', "one of the best albums ever to come out of Austin ".Livingston has seen a lot of the world since growing up in musically fertile West Texas. Hailing originally from Lubbock, his interests were more 'Cosmic' than 'Cowboy' and have prompted him to delve into the music and mysteries of many cultures. Traveling since the 80's as a Music Ambassador for the US State Department, Livingston has taken Texas music as far afield as India, Africa, Southeast Asia and the Middle East , demonstrating again and again the unique power that music has to build bridges between peoples of the world. As Livingston says, 'When all else fails, music prevails'. This philosophy earned him the honor of being appointed,' Austin's International Music Ambassador', in November of 2009 by the City Council. This world traveled view was reflected in his album, 'Mahatma Gandhi and Sitting Bull', released in 2004 and named by the Austin American-Statesman as one of the year's Top 10 CDs. Working with producer, Lloyd Maines, Livingston only half jokingly calls his new project, 'The Flesh and Blood Sessions'.
