Rachel Drew grew up the daughter of folk-musician-sweethearts, who met in 1972.  They played the old venues such as No Exit in Chicago's Roger's Park neighborhood.  As a kid, she knew she had the music within her, her mind spinning melodies of her making and lyrics to boot.  Finally, Drew took that step into the world of singer-songwriting, taking up where her parents left off.   One-on-one, Drew and her guitar create an image of a great singer-songwriter.  Her lyrics thoughtful, wistful and full of imagery.   Her voice is pure and emotive.  The guitar, simple and supportive.   But this is only one side of her.  Backed by some well-known Chicago musicians, the Rachel Drew Band reveals that other side, one in which Drew can hold her own with such contemporaries as Anna Fermin and Neko Case.   There's that certain Chicago-Americana sound in the band.  Where pop sensibility meets the edgy Americana established by such bands and artists as Wilco and Langford.   The razzle-dazzle as straightforward as a no-nonsense Chicago red hot from Super Dawg.Drew is the ringmaster of this band, and her interview reveals her thoughtfulness on lyrics, motherhood, the music business and making soup.   www.RachelDrew.com for video of Summer's Over and more!Support the showWe are always grateful to have you listening to STRUNG OUT. Nicholas pours his heart into his abstract paintings and his passion for his craft resonates with many loyal fans.  He is thoughtful, introspective and honest in what he feels is his pitfalls and triumphs.   A wonderful interview indeed. Support the showWe are always grateful to have you listening to STRUNG OUT. It is no secret that the Rogers Park neighborhood of Chicago is home to a lot of artists.  Musicians, painters, sculptors, theater companies and the people who make them happen.  So it is not surprising that Nicholas Barron has an art studio just this side south of the Evanston border.  In this 2 part series, we meet Barron the musician.  His unique fingerpicking style, accompanied by percussive hits on the guitar and even the beat-box style of early rap artists creates a textured, full sound.  This is rounded out by an extremely versatile voice--warm at times and full throated New Orleans shout at other times.  Watching him perform his well crafted lyrics is a show.   No small wonder that James Taylor tapped him in the New York Times as a musician to watch.  For all his talent, he has the artist passion that goes with it.  He started a campaign back in the '80's to protect the rights of street performers in Chicago.  The fact that many artists can make a living performing legally on Chicago streets can be traced back to Barron's efforts.   He is a complex, humble and engaging musician.   Part 2 will take us into the visual art world of Nicholas Barron, one that he inherited from his parents, both successful artists themselves. Support the showWe are always grateful to have you listening to STRUNG OUT. Roy L Hales/ Cortes Currents - David Ellingsen will be giving the residents of Cortes Island two presentations of his latest fine art photography series this year. “I'm going to be speaking at the Cortes Island Museum and Archives AGM on the 27th. It's a fairly short talk, probably about 45 minutes, and then some time for Q and A. So it's not a huge amount of time. I'm going to be speaking a little bit about the ‘Falling Boundaries' series. I also am planning on exhibiting this series, the actual prints, in the summer time,” he explained. The second exhibit will be at the Old Schoolhouse Gallery on the weekends of July 29 - 31 and August 5th-7th. “Falling Boundaries” is an emotional response to the decline of British Columbia's first growth forests. Ellingsen's original inspiration for the series came from the stumps near his childhood home at Reef Point Farm on Cortes Island. The Cortes Island Museum gave him access to its' ‘Von Donop Shed,' allowing Ellingsen to take the old logging tools into the forest to be photographed. The current project came into being after a biologist invited him to take ‘before' and ‘after' pictures of an old growth forest, north of Campbell River, that was about to be cut. “It took me a while to figure out what I wanted to say with these images and that's why I wanted to inject the historical, archival photos into these to speak to a span of time here. So then I worked with the Royal BC Museum here in Victoria, and almost all of the photographs are from Vancouver Island as well. I wanted to try and keep those close to the same area where I made my original photographs, and then installed those images into my original photographs. The result is as you see with the ‘Falling Boundaries' series,” explained Ellingsen. “I think most of us feel an incredible sense of loss just over the last couple of years, with the realization that we are down to less than 3% of the big tree old growth, as they call it.” He described the recent logging protests at Fairy Creek as “an emotional response to the predicament that we find ourselves in.” “I was really interested in looking at this from the perspective of what has happened since the arrival of the colonists, the settlers. Which of course is exactly my family history, and so my story to tell because that's the history of my family. We've been working in the forest, basically, since we got here.” Ellingsen's ancestors were among the first settlers to arrive on Cortes Island. The Mike Manson whose name persists in Mansons Landing was among them. Generations of the Ellingsen family were born on Cortes Island and remain there to this day. “I live in Victoria, but still consider Cortes my home base. I probably will my whole life just because of being born and raised down on Reef Point Farm on the south tip. It's such an incredible place to grow up as a child and as a youth with the forest,” he said.

Below the surface of Shantell Martin's signature black and white drawings is an artists' inquiry into the role of artist and viewer, where a work of art is more than an object of admiration disconnected from its inception. With a meditative process defined by an uninhibited flow, her compositions embody her internal state and the impermanence of the world around her. Exploring themes such as intersectionality, identity, and play, Martin is a cultural facilitator, forging new connections between fine art, education, design, philosophy, and technology. In addition to prestigious solo shows at some of the most renowned art institutions including the 92Y Gallery in New York City, the iconic Albright Knox Gallery, and the MoCADA Museum, Martin has carved a path for herself that is as much intellectual as a producer and visual artist. During her two year tenure as an MIT Media Lab Visiting Scholar, Martin collaborated with the social computing group to use drawing as a medium to explore the interaction of social processes with physical spaces. At the Brown Institute for Media Innovation, Martin created a large-scale wall installation and worked with the Institute's research group to explore how visual and computerized storytelling might influence media and technology innovation. A fashion and design icon in her own right, Martin has collaborated with iconic brands such as Nike, Vitra, Max Mara, Tiffany & Co., and in 2018, Puma launched a global capsule collection featuring her drawings. Martin has collaborated with legendary artists such as Pulitzer Prize-winning performance artist Kendrick Lamar and acclaimed designer Kelly Wearstler. In late 2018, she was asked to collaborate with the prestigious New York City Ballet, where she created large-scale drawings in the performance hall and foyer of the Lincoln Center for the company's celebrated Art Series. She continues to teach as an adjunct professor at NYU Tisch ITP (Interactive Telecommunications Program), where she works with her students to push the boundaries of storytelling, visual art, and technology. [3:46-7:14] She orignially was an oil painter in traditional art and wanted to paint realism, but when she got into NFTs, realised that she had to switch to digital techniques, so started learning how to use Procreate on an iPAD. She became part of a artist community on Telegram that became the $TRSH Art group. She gets bored easily, so resisted having a "signature" style for a while in her career, but eventually she did develop a recognisable signature style. [7:43-9:28] Yuna doesn't consider her Art "$TRSH art" anymore, sees it as a distinct time period in CryptoArt history. Was a reaction against people disparaging the artists, and sees a lot of the pieces as an inside joke that was remixed and shared amongst artists. [9:57 - 13:37]Yuna along with https://twitter.com/stina_jones (Stina Jones), https://twitter.com/theAngieTaylor (Angie Taylor) and https://twitter.com/blackboxdotart (Sparrow) started https://womenofcrypto.art/ (WOCA) organised the first female NFT art show CryptoVoxels called https://peakd.com/hive-156509/@jilt/she-art-exibition-my-nft-on-cryptovoxels (She ART). Episode interview with Max Osiris. Find his twitterhttp://twitter.com/maxosirisart ( Max Osiris Art) and his blog athttps://maxosiris.com/ ( Max Osiris). Time Stamps [00:37 - 01:30] Max was bitten by the NFT crypto art bug in 2018 when, during his research on blockchain, he stumbled acrosshttps://superrare.com/ ( SuperRare) and the concept of art as NFTs on the blockchain. “It [NFT crypto art] seemed naturally like the evolution of art. I had the intuitive sense that this is going to be big.”   [01:31 - 02:53] Max then started submitting artwork to SuperRare, describing it as a digital and modern fine art gallery.  “They [SuperRare] looked likehttps://www.sothebys.com/en/ ( Sotheby's).”     [02:54 - 04:19] Describes himself as a transdimensional artist. Has been called a digital shaman, which he understands he might have earned through his interests in psychedelics and visionary states.    [04:20 - 04:59] Some of Max's favorite art is art that speaks to something (be it political issues or philosophical issues). Feels crypto art is a good vehicle for capturing the zeitgeist.    [05:03 - 07:20] Feels that the democratization of art is one of the most exciting aspects of NFT crypto art. Resents the idea that there is an exclusive group of people likehttps://www.kennyschachter.art/ ( Kenny Schachter) who have “great taste in art” and who, thus, dictate what great art is.    [07:25 - 08:50] Loves that crypto art has disintermediated the art world, making traditional art galleries and curators less important than they used to be. Notes that individuals can now show off their NFT crypto art collections (likehttp://twitter.com/robnessofficial ( Robness),https://www.twitter.com/XCOPYART ( X Copy), etc) on sites likehttp://oncyber.io/ ( Cyber).   [08:51 - 12:14] Has had to mint art on different platforms likehttps://knownorigin.io/ ( KnownOrigin),https://rarible.com/ ( Rarible), andhttps://opensea.io/ ( OpenSea) because, at some point, he was kicked off another platform. Was kicked off SuperRare because he used portions of Hackatao in his “https://superrare.com/artwork-v2/i1o-i1o-i1o-[edit]-love-13170 (I1O I1O I1O [EDIT] LOVE)” piece withouthttps://twitter.com/Hackatao ( Hackatao)'s permission. Was kicked off KnownOrigin because he got doxxed.    [12:15 - 13:27] When an Institut Gallery show in London demanded that Max's submission be bound by the DMCA (Digital Millenium Copyright Act), Max refused and, instead, submitted a piece titled https://knownorigin.io/gallery/586100-dmca-rejected-institut-submission (DMCA) which was mostly whitespace with a paragraph talking about the absurdity of the DMCA.   [13:38 - 14:28] Displeased that https://twitter.com/KimDotcom (Kim Dotcom) was harassed over copyright issues and has been fighting extradition for about 10 years. Largely blames industries that pay lawmakers to control individual artists through digital rights management and, invariably, stifle creativity.    [14:29 - 16:38] http://twitter.com/robnessofficial (Robness) digitized the https://opensea.io/assets/0xb932a70a57673d89f4acffbe830e8ed7f75fb9e0/7323 (64 GALLON TOTER) as a protest to copyright issues and Max being banned.  “That was like the resistance piece to me getting banned, amongst other things.”  This was to be the beginning of the Trash Art movement, with more artists joining in to stand up for each other against the gatekeeping on platforms. Following the clamour by artists that the ban on Max and Robness be lifted, the platform eventually caved, agreeing to let Max and Robness back on with hopes that they would not “cause any more trouble”.  [16:39 - 19:28] Max believes the platforms are simply trying to avoid hosting content that violates copyright laws. Resents that DMCA is used to stifle creativity, control, and extort money from artists....

Episode interview with Eric Paul Rhodes, find his twitter http://twitter.com/secondrealm (Second Realm) and his blog at https://www.theouterrealm.io/about (The Outer Realm) Time Stamps [1:03 - 1:53] Eric fell down the NFT crypto art rabbit hole on twitter and was introduced to artists such as https://www.twitter.com/XCOPYART (X Copy) , http://www.twitter.com/NotColdy (Coldy), http://twitter.com/robnessofficial (Robness), http://twitter.com/maxosirisart (maxosiris), http://twitter.com/Jay_Delay (Jay Delay). [2:10 - 4:12] Wanted to become a TRSH art historian because he saw the narrative was being shifted after the fact, he wanted to give an unbiased 5000 foot overview of the movement https://www.theouterrealm.io/blog/a-short-history-of-nft-trash-art (https://www.theouterrealm.io/blog/a-short-history-of-nft-trash-art)  https://www.theouterrealm.io/blog/the-origins-of-trash-art (https://www.theouterrealm.io/blog/the-origins-of-trash-art)  Darren Kleine first wrote about it. https://cointelegraph.com/magazine/2020/03/24/immutable-trash-crypto-art-censorship-meaning (https://cointelegraph.com/magazine/2020/03/24/immutable-trash-crypto-art-censorship-meaning)  [4:26 - 9:31] TRSH art movement came about because the whales of https://superrare.com/ (SuperRare) specifically led by https://twitter.com/WhaleShark_Pro (Whaleshark) were determining what was eligible to be on the platform. A lot of artists that didn't meet a certain aesthetic criteria was pushed off the platform. Eric felt that Superrare sided with the whales and not the artists. https://twitter.com/j1mmyeth (j1mmyeth) was the one who coined the term $TRSH Art. Eric led a mass exodus of artists to the https://rarible.com/ (Rarible) platform, having it gain in popularity. [10:08 - 13:04] Trash art is a decentralised movement which has evolved and shaped the current NFT space. The idea of limited or no gatekeeping on platforms today is heavily because of trash artists pushed back and meme'd their way to victory. Comprises 3 main areas today, the idea of openness and onboarding as many people as possible into the NFT space, the meme of the trash can, and the aesthetics of glitchy appropriation art. [13:19 - 16:43] Trash art movement's fight against gatekeeping will go into the history books alongside the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Impressionism (impressionists movement) and the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dada (dadaists movement). The similarities are that the terms Trash artist and Impressionist were both derogatory terms that were reclaimed. Even though the artists were only together for a short time, their impact were felt long after they had gone their separate ways. Case in point, today, SuperRare is full of trash art. [17:17 - 19:51] Eric started out as an anon but chose to doxx himself as an artist because he didn't want to pretend to be a persona. The NFT space has opened to him a lot more since he became doxxed. [20:11 - 23:56] Eric thinks artists always reveal what they want about themselves and that anonymity that is common in NFTs allows a certain performance aspect of the artist persona that is somewhat unique. he thinks https://twitter.com/muratpak (Pak) is a team of people, and doesn't respect them as an artist in the NFT space. Xcopy is an example of the anonymity as adding a performance quality to the art. Thinks in some ways that this has always been the case, cites https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leonardo_da_Vinci (Leonardo Da Vinci) as someone who has been credited with a lot of inventions that might not be invented by him but merely documented. [24:28 - 23:38] Loves the attention that profile picture NFT projects bring to the NFT space. Didn't see the big deal about https://www.larvalabs.com/cryptopunks (cryptopunks), had many chances to collect them but didn't see it blowing up. Didn't see that cryptopunks turning into clout chasing decentralised social media. Thinks that art is being pushed

He moves with a serious pace and with his work with the Deague Group, creating the incredible, iconic, Art Series Hotel shows the level of accomplishment and achievement that Matthew brings to the table. But with Matthew it is not all a one way street. His ongoing work with the Irvine Club and now WellAware shows he is always supporting his community and putting back what he takes out. He has inspired many people and he has positively impacted many peoples lives. But, it's not all wine and roses. It never is. As you will hear, Matthew had his own moment of self-reflection which was forced upon him by his own drive and relentlessness. In this imposed hiatus and change of career path, Matthew may not have changed his work ethic, but he now knows when to take the foot off the pedal. Please enjoy our conversation.

In recognition of Women's History Month, our series of ArtsTalk shows will be about Prof. Chandler's long history of depicting the realities of women's lives in his artwork. From the 1960s and 70s with his Black on Black for Blacks and Urban Weaponry works, Chandler has expressed value and concern for Black women in his art. As a professor of Art and Art History for 33 years at Simmons in Boston, a women's college, Chandler taught about and began to take an interest in his art in creating works that portrayed other women's experiences. So, on this episode, we will discuss the intent of the content in his KKKrimes Against Womanity reprographic collage series that he began creating in the early 90s to depict the effects of atrocities of human holocausts like Native American eradication, African slavery and the Jewish Holocaust had on women's lives. Called "controversial", a "Black Power Artist", "activist artist" and "Outsider Artist", Chandler, 70, was born in 1941 in Lynn, MA. He is best known for the edgy, colorful, controversial and hotly-debated artistic statements of his 1960’s-1980’s works. Because he continues to evolve, his messages change to reflect his personal evolution, he is still an interesting, provocative speaker who can speak and/or lecture brilliantly about the historical relevance of his art and his activism to the worldwide struggle for race and gender equality as well as bridge the generation gap that is confounding this country’s leadership and confronting America as we move into the “internationalist” phase of our own evolution. The show is co-hosted and produced by Chandler's daughter and artist agent, Dahna M. Chandler, an award-winning journalist. (c) 2012. The Outsider Artist, LLC and BAPsody in Blue, Inc.
