Dave is joined once again by part-time co-host and WSL commentator Mitch Salazar to break down all the drama, triumph, and heartbreak from Stop No. 7 of the 2025 Championship Tour—the Western Australia Margaret River Pro. With Jordy Smith and Gabriela Bryan each securing their second wins of the season, both now sit atop the rankings and inch closer to their first World Titles. Dave and Mitch go deep on the event's biggest winners and most surprising losers—from Lakey Peterson's clutch performance to save her season, to the top 5 men faltering at a crucial stretch of the calendar, to a sobering mid-season cut for Channel Islands' stacked roster. Who should have won the Filipe v Julian Burleigh final? Well, 69% of @stab poll respondents believe the judges got it wrong — that Julian was the rightful winner of last week's Gold Coast Pro. However, when we polled a list of true surfing experts (Mick Fanning, Taj Burrow, Jake Paterson, Doug Silva, and Leo Fioravanti), they had a slightly different opinion. This week on The Drop, Stace G and Mikey C dissect everything that went down at the Gold Coast Pro, and eventually we're joined by Julian Wilson to hear his thoughts on a heroic return to Championship Tour surfing.

The WSL dropped a bomb on the surf world this week, and like Swedish captives, we all collectively cheered. On this episode of The Drop, Stab's co-founder Sam McIntosh is joined by the WSL's new CEO Ryan Crosby to discuss the League's major (and widely lauded) around for the 2026 CT season. Here's the TLDR version, ICYMI:
- The Final Five is dead.
- So is the mid-year cut
- So is the non-elimination opening round
- The 2026 Championship Tour will feature 12 events — with a late season ‘playoff'.
- It will start at Bells Beach in April and end at Pipeline in December, where points will be weighted at 150%.
- World Titles will once again be decided by cumulative points, not a single-day shootout. After that, Mikey and Buck hop on to discuss a few other stories from the week, including an incredible Greg Browning eulogy, a piece on lineup personalities, and an academic excuse for surfing more.

They talk about the region of Coolangatta as one of the most potent real world experiments as a World Champion breeding ground, with the location being a home to elite surfers like WSL's first World Champion, Peter Townend, Chelsea Hedges, Stephanie Gilmore, Mick Fanning, and world-renowned shapers like Darren Handley and Jason Stevenson. They discuss the area and history of the Tweed River Sand Bypass and how Australia is pushing for legislation to protect its surf zones and surf breaks. Dave and Rabbit dive even deeper by discussing Bugs' autobiography, Bustin' Down the Door, and the incredible documentary of the same name, and how the surfer's of his generation influenced the progression of our high-octane modern day competitive surfing. Dave and Bugs bring it all together by coming back to Snapper and its integration back into the Championship Tour in 2025, the mindset of battle-hardened surfers relegated to the CS vs the momentum of the up-and-coming regional qualifiers, and calling the World Champions heat between ‘99 World Champ Mark Occhilupo, 2012 World Champ Joel Parkinson, 3x World Champ Mick Fanning, 8x World Champ Stephanie Gilmore, and 11x World Champ Kelly Slater. In this episode, Ho and show host Jamie Brisick sit down to talk about her serendipitous thrust into competitive surfing, competing against her brother, friendship, winter on the North Shore, the inevitable overlap between passion and selfishness, functionality, confidence, and her biggest inspirations.
