In this episode of Everyday Health Stories, Anna and Dr. Reddy build on their previous discussion about sauna therapy's role in protecting the brain, expanding the conversation to reveal how the benefits of heat extend far beyond brain health. They explore how regular sauna use supports cardiovascular function, lowers blood pressure, boosts immune defenses, accelerates muscle recovery, enhances metabolic health, and may even slow cellular aging. Backed by compelling studies and clinical insights, the episode also highlights how heat activates heat shock proteins and beneficial hormones like growth hormone and norepinephrine—creating a cascade of healing responses throughout the body. Featuring the real-life experience of British adventurer Ben Fogle, who uses sauna sessions to reset and recover after extreme expeditions, this episode makes a powerful case for sauna therapy as a low-tech, deeply effective tool for resilience, longevity, and whole-body wellness. Whether you're an athlete, managing chronic conditions, or simply looking to feel better day to day, this episode offers practical guidance and inspiration to harness the healing power of heat.

Matt, Dawn and Gary board the TV Time Machine and enter a new Millennium. They review four new shows that began in January. Dom Jolly takes to the streets to terrorise and irritate the British public in Channel 4's hidden camera hit Trigger Happy TV. The BBC attempt the UK's first big reality series by sending groups of people to spend a year on a not so deserted island in Castaway. Though it's remembered as being the show that launched Ben Fogle, in practice, it was a mess. Poorly planned, and poorly executed with most of those who took part either leaving before the end or suing the production company. Next, At Home with The Braithwaites, the show that launched Sally Wainwright and the almost forgotten but still absolutely perfect, Clocking Off, with one of the best ensemble casts to ever grace our screens. Finally, Dawn and Gary go head to head in the first music quiz of the new era.
Episode 194 of The Adventure Podcast features exercise physiologist and endurance athlete, Dr Mark Hines. Mark is a senior lecturer in exercise physiology at Oxford Brookes University, with a background in ultra endurance racing of the gnarliest kind. If it's long, cold, snowy and potentially deadly, then Mark has probably raced it. In this episode, Mark shares the story of how he got into endurance racing, starting from his childhood experiences of camping and cross country running, to eventually being inspired by a Ben Fogle documentary to compete in the Marathon des Sables. He discusses his academic journey in exercise physiology, emphasising how his own fitness journey and desire to understand the science behind it motivated his studies. This conversation then delves into the physical and mental challenges of endurance racing, with Mark providing detailed insights into his experiences, including the importance of proper preparation, problem-solving, and the emotional and mental impact of these extreme events.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-adventure-podcast. Clare rambles around Epping Forest with the new Chief Scout, Dwayne Fields. He was appointed in September 2024, taking over from Bear Grylls, and has a wealth of adventure experience under his belt. Dwayne was born in Jamaica and came to the UK at the age of six. He grew up in inner city London and says his formative years were wrapped up in social stigma, and he became a victim of both knife and gun crime. He managed to break away from this culture by spending time in outdoor spaces like Hackney Marshes, rediscovering a love of the outdoors he had felt deeply as a youngster in Jamaica. He remembers watching a TV interview with James Cracknell and Ben Fogle who were looking for a third team member to join a polar expedition. Although by the time he applied he was too late for selection, Dwayne did eventually join another trip and became the first black Briton to trek to the north pole. For Ramblings he leads Clare from the Scout Centre at Gilwell Park into and around Epping Forest. According to the Epping Forest Heritage Trust, it's the largest open space in London at just over 6000 acres stretching from Manor Park in east London to just north of Epping in Essex. Today we're uncovering another favourite episode from The Travel Diaries archive, now that we have over 100 episodes to pick from, as we build up to our big season finale with Joanna Lumley next week. It was so hard to choose, but when I reflected on the episodes that sparked the most wanderlust in me, from the most seasoned travellers, I thought it had to be Ben Fogle. Ben's episode was recorded back in the Covid days, during season three, when no one really knew what was going on with the future of travel, and his tales of epic physical feats, wilderness living , going to the most remote parts of the planet, really inspired me at the time.Ben is an award-winning broadcaster and one of the UK's most prolific adventurers. He has rowed across the Atlantic Ocean, swam from Alcatraz to San Francisco, run the Marathon Des Sables (a 6 day ultra marathon across the Sahara Desert), raced across the Antarctica to the South Pole and most recently climbed Mount Everest. He's written nine best-selling books - many about travel - and has the enviable title of the United Nations Patron of the Wilderness. And speaking of the Wilderness, he has travelled to every corner of the globe while filming his long-running hit TV series, New Lives in the Wild, a notion that feels particularly relevant right now during lockdown. The partnership, which kicks off October 26 as Holland America Line completes the recreation of the brand's first-ever sailing from Rotterdam to New York City, features on-board video content across Holland America's entire fleet produced by an Ellis Island researcher, as well as a curated exhibit launching in 2023 at Ellis Island detailing the brand's historical prominence in bringing 1 in 10 immigrants from Europe to the United States. The collaboration will launch with a joint talk between Stephen Lean, director of The American Family Immigration History Center at Ellis Island and Bill Miller, noted cruise historian, detailing the immigrant experience in the late 1800s; the presentation will be available on-demand across all ships within the fleet. Noting the cruise industry's – and particularly Holland America Line's – importance in the immigrant journey from Europe to US, the Foundation will curate an exhibit in its History Center available for visitors from February to April 2023.The cruise line, which was founded in the Netherlands in 1873 as the Netherlands-American Steamship Company, was primarily a carrier of immigrants from Europe to the United States until well after the turn of the century, carrying nearly 2 million passengers to new lives in the New World. Holland America Line was the first to do away with “Steerage class” altogether, renaming it “Emigrants Class” where unlike the competition, guests were served three square meals. It is this level of care and attention to detail – a tradition and hallmark of the brand that has continued to this day – that was the impetus for its nickname at the time: “The Spotless Fleet.” Holland America Line provided everything from doctors and a pre-departure hotel complete with English lessons and classes on American civics to ensure passengers a safe journey to New York; and in fact, 99% of the immigrants carried on the fleet were cleared for entry through Ellis Island, a tremendous feat at the time.Holland America Line began the recreation of its first voyage with a sendoff October 15 from the Netherlands. The ship will sail past the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island as it arrives in New York City around 7am October 26.Windstar Cruises Partners with Coral Gardeners in TahitiWindstar Cruises has partnered with the Coral Gardeners, a Mo'orea (French Polynesia)-based organization determined to revolutionize ocean conservation and create a global movement to save the coral reefs through reef restoration, awareness activities, and innovative solutions. Unique coral adoption cards for those participating will be placed in their guest room on board.Windstar is confident the majority of guests will choose to donate to help save the reef they are enjoying on their Tahiti cruise.A decade of FUN down under It's been just over two weeks after returning to Australian shores and yesterday Carnival Cruise Line celebrated an incredible 10 years of providing Australians with fun-filled holidays at great value.Kicking off celebrations at Tangalooma, Moreton Island, passengers aboard Carnival Splendor were treated to the party of a lifetime with beach games on the sand, Carnival cupcakes and a giant ‘10 Years in Aus' sandcastle before returning to the ship for her journey home to Sydney.First arriving down under in October 2012, over one million guests have since experienced the fun of a Carnival cruise. We caught up with international adventurer, TV's Ben Fogle, about his love of exploring the globe. He's climbed Everest and rowed across the Atlantic Ocean … BUT he LOVES Yorkshire.Ben chats about filming in the county, his constant companion (Storm the Labrador), Tales from the Wilderness, meeting Yorkshire shepherdess Amanda Owen and her family (9 children!) and too many animals to count, what to expect from 5 On the Farm at Cannon Hall Farm over the August Bank Holiday weekend (he's appearing alongside many top names, including the All Creatures Great and Small cast), plus he shares snippets of his favourite places in Yorkshire to visit … think Whitby, The Dales and the North York Moors, amongst other lovely locations. Even Dr Who gets a mention! Be inspired … it's the new Welcome to Yorkshire ‘Talkshire' podcast.
Ben Fogle, a TV presenter broadcaster and author who has reached the peak of Everest, trekked over Antarctica and rowed across the vast Atlantic ocean. A man that has faced adventure and put himself in the most high risk situations doesn’t usually pair with low confidence issues and fighting his own insecurity. Born in Westminster everyone perceives him with a life of privilege, comfort and a quintessential posh lifestyle. Failing at school and only just got through his university studies. Ben had determination for travel and exploring, he lived on a island self-sufficiently for year, presented and made numerous of well-known documentaries, written 9 Times Best selling books and is the United Nations Patron of the Wilderness. There is more to this man than I believed the conversation we had was so diverse we covered so much, going through Ben’s journey getting down the core of the man everyone see’s smiling in behind the lens. A chance for him to express in his words who he really is and the voyage of taking back control of his own narrative. This podcast is going to open your eyes to reality and surprise you in ways you did not expect. The demand we have for materialistic things, to be happy all the time and push ourselves and take those leaps make us question what is happy and how can we be more fulfilled.Topics: Where does your thirst for challenge come from?
Ben Fogle became famous over twenty years ago when he spent a year living on a Scottish Island for early reality TV programme Castaway. It was the springboard for remarkable career involving television presenting, publishing ten books, climbing Everest, swimming with crocodiles, saving elephants, walking to the South Pole and rowing across the Atlantic Ocean. He tells Richard Coles and Nikki Bedi about his most recent project; travelling around the country to tell people about his extraordinary life. Ade Adepitan is a former Paralympian and a globe-trotting TV presenter, but he has only just started his most important adventure - fatherhood. He joins us to talk about this new chapter in his life and his latest three-part series, Ade on the Frontline: Climate Change. Liz Knight never felt comfortable in a suit when she worked in sales. After being made redundant she began working in a day care centre and, through the elderly people she met there, she learned more about local wildlife on the Welsh Borders. Liz turned that knowledge into a business and now a book Forage: Wild Plants to Gather, Cook and Eat. Listener Christina Longden contacted Saturday Live to tell us about her great great great grandfather, whose life had been shrouded in secrecy for a hundred years. Robert Stanley was a working class man from Manchester, who rose to become mayor and was one of the earliest converts to Islam. And snooker player Steve Davis shares his Inheritance Tracks. Mark Sealey; father, husband and I.T. Guru decided one day that he was going to row the Atlantic Ocean after watching a documentary about Ben Fogle and James Cracknell doing just that. Some of his friends were a little sceptical shall we say, but ultimately Mark proved them wrong, he completed the race (with his 3 rowing companions) and he's absolutely buzzing because of it! It's a life changing challenge that Mark just had to take on. It took him over 3 years just to get to the start line on the 12th December 2020... and it took him a further 50 days, 22 hours and 16 minutes to get to the finishing line! He's less stressed and physically in a much better condition than when he started. His blood pressure, which he takes medication for, is lower too. He's a huge advocate for the challenge, as it has changed his life for the better! But that's not it. Completing this has inspired Mark to do more and he definitely wants to do it again. So, if you're interested, drop Mark a line, because he'd do it again, in a heartbeat.
Self belief, taking risks and a lust for finding the path less travelled defines this week’s Conversation of Inspiration with Ben Fogle. With a successful TV career, a passion for the environment and more than 20 years of monumental global challenges, Ben’s life has been one of highs and lows, but the golden thread throughout has been his continued strive towards pushing outside of his comfort zone.Ben speaks of how all his experiences have shaped him as a person, and how his aspirations to take on some of man's greatest feats and his unwavering passion for the wilderness, led him to living a life of colour and adventure. It’s a conversation that embodies Ben’s desire to live a rich and full life and one that explores the relationship between resilience, self-belief and achievement.Trigger warning: discussion around the tragedy of stillbirth from 39min27sec to 42min17sec.#AD Conversations of Inspiration is brought to you with support from Dell Technologies. Counting is part of our culture and I explore this in relation to sheep farming and an old system to keep a record of the flock.
I speak with Matthew and Charis Watkinson about their off grid life in the Welsh countryside, and what prompted them to turn their back on the trappings of modern life for as remote and self sufficient an existence as they could. Having recently featured on Ben Fogle's 'New Lives in the Wild' on Channel 5, the pair have been overwhelmed with the interest in the life and enterprise they have created at Beeview Farm. Both ex-veterinarians, I chat to Matthew and Charis about the challenges of the profession which I know all too well myself, having left clinical practice for an industry consultancy role back in 2016. The struggles of the job and emotional demands saw Matthew make a rather controversial departure from the profession 11 years ago. Something which he is still being criticised for to this day, and which flared up again on certain veterinary online forums following the screening of the documentary. I hope that this podcast gives listeners a chance to hear the Watkinson's points of view and reflect on the issues within the vet profession, as well as the impact it can have on those who have dedicated their lives to it but find themselves at odds with the day to day realities of what it expects of them. It's that time of year when many households are bristling with stressed students frantically trying to study and prepare for exam season. And every-time exams are on, with all the associated stress, it makes me wonder how blunt an instrument of measurement exams are.Ben Fogle, adventurer, documentary maker and wilderness conqueror.. the climb Everest, row the Atlantic, race across Antarctica type of guy says of exams.. that he failed them, but that they also failed him.He says he finds it “astonishing that in 2020, we are still fixating on exams as the medium of defining peoples intellectual potential and capabilities.” He quotes Einstein’s famous line.. “everyone’s a genius, but if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree it will live its entire life believing its stupid”.He makes the point that similarly, some people have the ability to retain knowledge and information and regurgitate it under exam conditions, while others fall apart under pressure. He says exams are heavily weighted to perpetuate the continued opportunity of the few.. not the many. From his own experience, he says he’s spent a lifetime healing from the wounds of early childhood failings, and that believing that you’re a failure leads to a slippery slope of self loathing which strips you of your confidence and self esteem.Having watched, and continue to watch, our 5 kids and their friends go through the school and University system, it’s very true that it's easy for some, and an absolute uphill battle for others. Some of the least bright kids are the most empathetic, the most creative, or personable people you’ll ever come across. Some of the smartest are the least empathetic, creative or socially aware. So does that make some of them better than others? Of course not.But it’s true that those who believe they’re ‘dumb’ at school or who have to work a lot harder at it, have a lower sense of self worth. Because the only yardstick, the only measurement being made on these kids between the ages of about 13 to 18, and even longer if you’re at Uni, is an antiquated grading system based on how you perform under pressure and what you can recall.A school principal famously wrote to parents saying, ‘please remember that among the students sitting exams is an artist who doesn’t understand maths, an entrepreneur who doesn’t understand English, a musician who can’t do Chemistry an athlete who doesn’t get Physics. If your child doesn’t get top marks, don’t take away their self confidence or dignity for them.. don’t judge them.. it’s just an exam.. your children may conquer the world, a bad exam mark won’t take away their talent.. and remember that doctors and engineers are not the only happy people in the world..’This year in particular has been enormously stressful for students, so we need to make sure now more than ever, that we don’t let them attach their self worth to an exam scorecard.

In this podcast we take a look at the impact of COVID-19 on plastic reduction. Have consumers become more aware of the plastic packaging and the impact on the environment of the products they buy or has the opposite occurred, with a focus on health and hygiene turning their attention elsewhere? Joining us for a lively debate on where the future of plastic reduction is headed are Susan Hansen, Global Strategist, Food Packaging and Logistics, Rabobank, David Jones, CEO & Founder, Just One Ocean, Simon Ellin, CEO, The Recycling Association and Geoff Brighty, Founder & MD, Environmental Sustainability Associates Limited. About our panel Susan Hansen, Global Strategist, Food Packaging and Logistics, Rabobank As the Global Strategist for F&A Supply Chains, Susan Hansen is responsible for developing Rabobank’s global research portfolio and sector expertise related to food packaging and food logistics. Food packaging spans all relevant packaging materials including metal, glass, corrugated paper, folding carton and plastics, while Food logistics mainly covers cold chains and food distribution. Food waste and sustainability are currently hot themes in Susan’s sector research. Susan and her eight-person, globally operating, team is part of the RaboResearch Food&Agribusiness network of close to 90 analysts worldwide. The analysts are experts in various fields; covering the whole food value chain from farmer to retail, as part of Rabobank’s Banking for Food strategy. David Jones, CEO and Founder, Just One Ocean For more than 10 years David Jones, a professional underwater photographer and media specialist, has been raising concerns about the damage we are doing to our oceans, and in particular the effect of single-use plastics. He has worked for a number of production companies including the BBC alongside TV personalities such as David Attenborough, Bear Grylls and Ben Fogle. As diving supervisor, cameraman and executive adviser he worked on the award-winning film, ‘A Plastic Ocean’, which was 7 years in the making. In 2009 he joined The Plastic Oceans Foundation where he worked as an education, science and sustainability adviser. Four years later he started his own venture Just One Ocean (https://justoneocean.org/) , a registered UK charity, in order to support research and promote awareness of ocean issues. He is currently undertaking a PhD at the University of Portsmouth researching the impact of microplastics on the coastal environment and the potential use of citizen science to help resolve the issue. Simon Ellin, CEO, The Recycling Foundation After initially graduating in environmental science and completing a PhD on the effects of various air pollutants on the ecosystem, Simon moved into the recycling arena nearly 30 years ago. Initially cutting his teeth as one of the first local government Waste Disposal Authority recycling officers, with Staffordshire County Council. Still based in Staffordshire, and married with two daughters, Simon has subsequently held a variety of roles in the recycling industry, spending significant periods as a mill buyer for first Cheshire Recycling (now Palm Recycling), and then Smurfit Kappa. Sandwiched in between was a period working in an operational role for Cleanaway (now Veoila), and in the facilities management sector. Simon joined The Recycling Association in 2009 and is now Chief Executive of both the Recycling Association, and its trading company, IWPP Limited. Simon is very clear on the strategy for the Association over the next few years and lists the balance of supporting members through probably the most difficult trading conditions they have ever experienced whilst retaining compliance and quality as his greatest challenge. Geoff Brighty, Founder and MD, Environmental Sustainability Associates Limited Dr Brighty is a sustainability consultant with a career spanning 30 years in the environmental protection and regulation sector. He is a published research scientist, with a PhD in Fish Reproduction and Aquaculture, and has over 20 publications to his name on environmental pollution issues and flood risk. After leaving his science and chemical regulatory role, in 2004 Geoff moved into the operational-facing part of the Environment Agency. Here as a Deputy Director-Area Manager, he was responsible for waste, water regulation and flood risk management for an area stretching from Oxford to the East Coast, as well as customer facing work with local MPs and CEOs. After leaving the Agency in 2014, Geoff established his sustainability consultancy (http://www.envsustain.co.uk/) working on environmental issues including flooding, water quality and climate change adaptation for Governments, universities and businesses. He also joined the NGO Plastic Oceans, where he led sustainability, science and policy activities for the release of the Foundation’s film A Plastic Ocean in 2017, and is currently Science Advisor. He is Trustee of the Rivers Trust, and the Norfolk Rivers Trust.

Today, I’m joined by the sportsman, adventurer and double Olympic gold medallist, James Cracknell. We first got to know James as part of the coxless four rowing team, alongside Steve Redgrave, that won gold at the Sydney Olympics. Several world titles later, James went on to take part in countless feats of endurance, from becoming the highest ever placed Brit to run the Marathon des Sables, the hottest hardest race in the world, to rowing the Atlantic in a two man boat, and racing to the South Pole with his friend Ben Fogle, who you might have heard on the podcast earlier this season. Then, in 2010, James’s life was turned upside down. While cycling in a race across America, he was struck by a lorry and experienced a serious brain injury that left him in a coma. As we discuss, his journey to recovery has been anything but straightforward, but his story is one of sheer determination and resilience, ultimately leading him to return to university - Cambridge, no less - where he became the oldest ever winner of the famous Oxbridge boat race. Travel has been hugely important to James. Of course he’s spent a lot of time on some of the world’s most beautiful lakes and rivers - and I love being by the water, so I really enjoyed hearing about those. And his Slovenian hidden gem is a spot that I’ve now added to my travel wish list, and I’m sure you might do too. 057: James Cracknell on Endeavour A note about Coronavrius We, individuals, groups, communities, society look up to sporting heroes, we revere and admire their dedication, their persistence, their focus, the sacrifices they make to make the most of their often rare genetics and to do so on the greatest performance stage. As the world battles Coronavirus, we're all going to be required to make sacrifices that we've never made before in pursuit of applying ourselves, to the collective goal of public health. We've thought hard about whether while the world is taking dramatic turn, whether the appropriateness of us publishing podcast episodes about a topic of human performance is even relevant. Certainly we can appreciate that if you normally tune in but your head is elsewhere at the moment then it might be better to switch off, go an focus on what you need to do (which hopefully isn't stock piling toilet rolls) and listen to this again when it suits you best. We've decided to continue because perhaps these episodes can offer some inspiration, maybe an hour's worth of distraction, perhaps to help refocus you on what you need to be doing. Also, there are a lot of people now distancing and isolating for the first time in their lives – I hope in some ways these episodes can be some supportive company and a positive influence as the worry and the noise surrounding the outbreak increases. This week's episode features my interview with James Cracknell. Two time Olympic Champion in coxless four rowing, part of perhaps the most renowned rowing crew of all time the Sydney 2000 four – a team I was honoured to support. On retirement, James didn't put his feet up, in fact almost the opposite. He crossed the Atlantic with Ben Fogle, raced to the South Pole, kayaked the length of the Thames, was at the time the fastest Briton to run the Marathon de Sables, competed in the Yukon Arctic Ultra and has run the London Marathon numerous times with a best time of 2:43 which for a 90kg guy is phenomenal (at the time of recording James was headed for the London Marathon in a few weeks, but the event has now been postponed for now to October). In 2010 James undertook Ride Across America and was hit by a petrol tanker suffering a contrecoup brain injury – he is now a campaigner for the use of bike helmets – which effectively saved his life. Last year James became the oldest competitor and the oldest winner, in the history of the Oxford – Cambridge boat being twice as old as his crew mates and competitors and older than some of his crew mates dad's. I worked with James in the pursuit of this goal and it was one of the most challenging cases I've worked on, to problem solve and innovate in such unique ways. James did so through some trying personal circumstances which played out in the press. In this conversation James and I discuss his early in drivers, becoming part of a crew with some of the highest achievers in sport Sir Steve Redgrave and Sir Matthew Pinsent. Why he kept pushing towards goals after he retired from Olympic sport and his passions for public service and how through public policy he aspires to make the biggest difference to the people's health and well-being. I do believe there is a lesson in here about creating intensity about doing what we need to do to accomplish something. I also think there is a message about feeling the fears but rather than being paralysed by them – acting upon them. Happy listening, keep your distance and wash your hands folks! Show notes Steve and James discuss their long-standing relationship Honesty and being unafraid to be unpopular James's return to high level sport and The Boat Race James required a bespoke recovery programme that enabled him to come back stronger The triple whammy of ultra-endurance endeavours, starvation on The Island and being 45! Any reputation James had disappeared rapidly at the 5K ergo Earning respect by beating Steve and Matthew There are different ways to skin a cat! James's physiology Being the best at everything that takes no natural talent Defending titles and building on success. “Anyone can win once” Switching sides and doing the double The part vanity has to play in winning or losing Pressure Setting extraordinary goals The challenges full time athletes face! Motivating other people, being a burden, enjoying sport and rewarding yourself Relationships, perspectives and differences Swapping lycra for goretex or a gown at Cambridge and the binary nature of winning and losing Strictly what's the worst that could happen?! Do not show weakness. Do not show the opposition you are tired. Showing vulnerability Don't let them see you being sick Winning by a second or 4, break the world record…no?! Show #613 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 17th October 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. VOLVO XC40 RECHARGE "The Volvo XC40 Recharge arrives as Volvo’s first battery electric car, and first ‘Recharge’ model, with 75kWh battery and 402bhp." says CarsUK: "Looking almost identical to the ICE XC40, the XC40 Recharge gets the blanked-off grille we’ve already seen and a 75kWh battery pack lurking under the floor. And it has promising specs to go with its 75kWh battery. Volvo say it will deliver more than 250 miles on a single charge. But most appealing is that it comes with pretty much the same 4WD electric powertrain as the Polestar 2, which means a chunky 402bhp and 487lb/ft of torque, enough to scoot the XC40 Recharge to 62mph in under 5.0 seconds." https://www.carsuk.net/volvo-xc40-recharge-revealed-the-electric-xc40-arrives-as-volvos-first-ev/ As per jalopnik, buyers of the PHEV model get free electricity for a year: "“Recharge plug-in hybrid model will come with free electricity for a year, provided through a refund for the average electricity cost during that period.”" https://jalopnik.com/volvos-first-full-ev-is-called-xc40-recharge-and-comes-1839101896 Anders Gustafsson, president and CEO of Volvo Cars USA: "We're going to launch one BEV [battery electric vehicle] every year through 2025". CNET says: "Volvo's next big platform, Scalable Product Architecture 2 (SPA 2), will arrive in 2021 with the next-generation XC90 SUV. Production of the XC90 will kick off in Charleston, South Carolina, in 2022. "That car will of course be able to be sold with a BEV solution from the start," Gustafsson said. For its future electrification efforts, Volvo will draw on the engineering efforts of its Polestar brand. SPA 2, as we've reported earlier, will also underpin the upcoming Polestar 3 electric SUV, which is also expected to launch around 2021 or 2022. The XC40 EV was also built this way. Its Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) was originally designed to handle a full-EV application, and, in addition to the XC40 EV, it underpins the Polestar 2 sedan. Look for the Volvo XC40 EV to go on sale in the US in late 2020." https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/new-volvo-electric-vehicles-2025/ GREEN CAB GOES GREENER, MOVING TO ALL-ELECTRIC FLEET A story I missed from two days ago on WKOW.com: "A Madison cab company is set to become one of the first in the country to run an all-electric-vehicle Tesla fleet. Green Cab’s owner tells 27 News the taxi service is partnering with Zerology to replace the fleet of hybrid cars with Tesla vehicles. Green Cab’s website says it’s the city’s only all hybrid rideshare service. It’s been in Madison since 2010." https://wkow.com/news/top-stories/2019/10/14/green-cab-goes-greener-moving-to-all-electric-fleet/ TESLA MODEL Y ELECTRIC SUVS SPOTTED "At least three red Tesla Model Y electric SUVs were spotted on Tuesday morning (Australian time) being transported near the Californian carmaker’s Fremont factory." says The Driven, and they've posted a tweet by @Model3Owners which said: "A few Model Ys spotted in Fremont being transported" "Another Model Y in Midnight Silver was also spotted on Highway 680 in Fremont apparently undergoing road testing. This particular model has created a great deal of excitement with its 19″ aero sports wheels which appear to be the same offered on the Performance Model 3 in China." https://thedriven.io/2019/10/16/tesla-model-y-electric-suvs-spotted-in-lead-up-to-early-production-start-in-2020/ https://thedriven.io/2019/10/16/tesla-model-y-electric-suvs-spotted-in-lead-up-to-early-production-start-in-2020/ ELECTRIC RENAULT TWINGO CONFIRMED BY PRODUCT PLANNING BOSS "An all-electric Renault Twingo (a city car smaller than ZOE) has been expected for years and it seems that it will be finally introduced!" says InsideEVs: "This summer we saw a leaked calendar of new model launches by Renault, which indicated a Twingo IV Z.E. in 2022, but the Twingo BEV might be introduced as early as next year! It's interesting that the Twingo Z.E. was on the table even before ZOE. At some point, Renault even unveiled a concept (in 2013, after the ZOE) and was exploring joint production with Daimler (Renault Twingo Z.E. - smart forfour EV), but in the end, only Daimler introduced a smart forfour EV." https://insideevs.com/news/376538/electric-renault-twingo-confirmed/ TESLA MODEL S PLAID PRODUCTION DATE REVEALED BY ELON MUSK "Elon Musk recently announced an estimated production date for the Tesla Model S “Plaid” P100D+ that’s currently running laps at the Nürburgring. According to the CEO, the track-capable, aerodynamically optimized variant of its flagship sedan will go into production around Summer 2020." writes Joey for Teslarati: "With Elon Musk’s recent update on Twitter, it now seems certain that the final iteration of its Model S Plaid P100D+ will be available for purchase less than a year from now. Quite interestingly, this date also comes just before Musk’s initial estimates for the start of Model Y deliveries, which was announced as Fall 2020 during the crossover’s unveiling last March." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-s-nurburgring-edition-production-date/ PUPILS TO COUNT NUMBER OF ZERO-EMISSION MILES TRAVELLED "School children are being encouraged to choose low-emission travel in a new competition launched by Go Ultra Low, the joint government and car industry initiative created to provide all the necessary information about electric vehicles." reports AirQualityNews: "TV presenter Ben Fogle, the Go Ultra Low Ambassador and face of the campaign, is challenging children to count the number of zero-emission miles they travel over the course of a week. The competition will draw attention to the emissions associated with different modes of transport and will encourage pupils to choose low emission travel instead. This includes walking, cycling, public transport or electric vehicles. There will be accompanying lesson plans for participating schools, which will aim to educate the pupils on how to reduce their carbon footprint through sustainable travel." https://airqualitynews.com/2019/10/16/pupils-to-count-number-of-zero-emission-miles-travelled/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week… How can we make up for the lost revenue from taxing fossil fuels? Both Nicola’s sister Sarah Cairncross and Judith are interested in creating a living from successful pro blogging. Nicola shares some interesting stories, articles, interviews, facts and figures and Judith tries to work out whether it is something she could do or pay to have done for her. In The Show Nicola is delighted with her new phone, and she’s celebrated by buying a coat because there is snow in Greece! She’s been out to lunch with Pete in Brighton and enjoyed a meeting of minds at the Hotel du Vin, albeit a disappointing fish stew. Judith has enjoyed a really nice client week with at least one reporting an early win; a £5k contract. What's Fuelled Their Fire? A particularly interesting man booked himself into Judith’s diary this week and she talks about how this stretched her. Nicola is travelling back to Greece tomorrow and is slightly overwhelmed by how much study she has to do with The Story Grid, Andre Chaperon and her new Curtis Brown course has now arrived too. Focus Of The Week Both Nicola’s sister Sarah and Judith are interested in creating a living from successful pro blogging. Nicola shares some interesting stories, articles, interviews, facts and figures and Judith tries to work out whether it is something she could do or pay to have done for her, and which business models would lend themselves to the latter option. Nicola talks about Pat Flynn and Yaro Starak and Jeni Hott and niche sites with high traffic which are monetised with Adsense. Judith proposes that in 2019 Patreon might be another way to be paid for content writing and creation. Simon Smith has four guests to offer insight and guidance on the skills you will need to develop and what to expect from life as a presenter. They are Lisa Rogers, Anita Rani, Hilary Murray and Alvin Hall. Lisa Rogers got her first presenting role thanks to her passion for sport on Channel 4's late night show Under the Moon. Since then she has presented Scrapheap Challenge and currently presents Sport Wales for the BBC. Anita Rani presented India on Four Wheels and Four Rooms and is a regular current affairs correspondent on The One Show. Hilary Murray is an agent for Arlington Enterprises, who represent a host of talent including James Wong, Ben Fogle and Kirstie Allsopp. Alvin Hall is a money expert who came into presenting "by accident" because of his ability to clearly explain finance.
