From childhood struggles to scaling life's biggest challenges, Alex Staniforth's journey is one of resilience, adventure, and mental strength. After two failed attempts to summit Everest, and surviving an avalanche on the mountain's most fatal year, Alex was forced to shift his mindset, realising that true achievement isn't always about reaching the top - sometimes, no matter how hard we try, external forces are simply out of our control. These experiences reshaped his perspective on resilience, leadership, and overcoming adversity in all areas of life.Alex opens up about the power of mindset, the lessons learned from embracing discomfort, and how the outdoors became his greatest teacher. He also discusses recent attempts to run the UK's Coast to Coast and his work with Mind Over Mountains, a charity helping others find clarity and confidence through nature. With his next big challenge ahead, this conversation is a reminder that adventure is about more than just the destination—it's about the setbacks, the growth, and the courage to keep moving forward.Follow Alex:https://www.alexstaniforth.com/https://www.instagram.com/alexstaniforth_/https://mindovermountains.org.uk/Support the podcast: Get a whopping 65% off your first Gousto box at: https://www.gousto.co.uk/raf/?promo_code=TOM42277653Get in contact:https://www.instagram.com/tombryanyeah/https://www.facebook.com/greatbritishadventurespodcasthttps://www.threads.net/@tombryanyeahChapters00:00 Introduction01:36 Alex in the city04:02 Changing travel mindset after losing licence10:26 Who is Alex?12:22 Struggles and stammer at school17:44 Advice to younger self19:54 Grit over Grades23:44 What expeditions teach us.26:42 Finding opportunity in adversity31:27 Alex tragic Everest attempts37:13 How to process a life threatening moment47:54 Finding our own Everests in life54:40 Challenging yourself with what's next?01:01:17 Tackling the UK's Coast to Coast trail01:04:49 2nd Coast to Coast attempt01:12:50 The mountains aren't always there01:16:38 Finding the acceptance to stop01:21:59 Processing 2 failures01:24:58 A completion that was different to the initial goal01:27:49 The balance between performance and pleasure01:33:44 Mind over Mountains01:48:59 Alex's fundraising targets01:52:12 Exciting 2025 challenge01:53:23 Advice to those who doubt themselves
Alex Staniforth is a record-breaking adventurer, ultra-endurance athlete, international keynote speaker, author and charity founder from Chester, who is no stranger to overcoming challenges. By the age of 19 he had already survived the two most significant disasters in Mount Everest history, in two consecutive years. However, his biggest mountains have been within: overcoming epilepsy, bullying, mental ill health and a stammer since childhood. Alex has never allowed adversity to become his identity – only an opportunity to discover his potential and inspire others. He is the fastest person to climb all 100 UK county tops - covering 5,000 miles by human power in 72 days. He has raised over £100,000 for charity, winning the Pride of Britain Granada Reports Fundraiser of the Year 2017 and a Points of Light award from the Prime Minister in 2023. Alex has authored two books ‘Icefall' and ‘Another Peak', and in 2020 founded a mental health charity, Mind Over Mountains, to restore mental well-being through nature. Alex's 3 mindset messages: I shall either find a way or make one The biggest risk is staying in Base Camp We can't choose our challenges, only our mindset Food Alex shared with me that he loves seafood and Thai cuisine. After careful consideration and research, I decided to prepare a light yet incredibly flavourful fish dish. I discovered a wonderful recipe for steamed sizzling fish that I felt compelled to test beforehand. When I served it to my family, they were amazed by how much flavour this seemingly simple dish delivered and immediately requested it become part of our regular weekly menu. I complemented the fish with fragrant rice and a refreshing Asian spinach salad. After tasting it, Alex remarked that he had never experienced cod prepared so deliciously and thoroughly enjoyed every bite. Seeing his genuine appreciation made the effort truly worthwhile! : If you would like to get in touch with Alex, please visit www.mindsetkitchen.co.uk to find all the details.
Welcome to episode 189 with Alex Staniforth, who is an adventurer, speaker and the founder of Mind Over Mountains, a charity that brings together walking in nature, mindfulness & professional coaching and counselling in support of good mental health & wellbeing. Alex was diagnosed with epilepsy at the age of nine and this would be the catalyst for several years of bullying, anxiety, panic attacks and a lifelong stammer. He found that time in nature, and more specifically time on hills and mountains, helped his mental health and he was just 14 when he set his sights on climbing Mount Everest. His first attempt, aged 18, ended when an avalanche in the Khumbu Icefall killed 16 climbing Sherpas. During his second attempt, base camp was hit by the Nepal earthquake which killed 3 Sherpas in Alex's team. This led Alex to a long period of survivor's guilt, depression and Alex also fell in to bulimia, which he was still dealing with when he set out to climb all of the highest peaks in the UK, in 72 days, with only a bicycle for transport. We talk about all of that in this episode. We also talk about dealing with failure, why it's important to take on challenges and what we can learn from both these things and we chat about identity and what it was like for Alex when he was forced to step away from endurance challenges by long Covid and how he had to learn to do things differently. Alex Staniforth is an adventurer, endurance athlete and speaker. He survived the two biggest disasters to have struck Mount Everest including the 2015 Nepal earthquake. He also has endured epilepsy, a stammer and bullying since childhood but has turned this adversity into an opportunity. Today on the freedom project podcast, Alex and I discuss: Cultivating that drive to achieve excellence in everything you do How to use adventure days to refocus the mind How one question changed alex's life What people get wrong about everest How to begin to enjoy the pain of endurance sports And how to thrive in the face of adversity
Alex Staniforth grew up in Cheshire and had a dream. A dream of climbing the highest mountain in the world, Mount Everest. For many, it is just that, a dream. But for Alex, it was a dream he couldn't shake off and he put his all into making it happen. In 2014, at the age of 17, he went to Nepal, ready to make his dream a reality. Unfortunately, disaster struck in the form of a devastating avalanche which swept down the mountain, killing 16 people. The expedition was cancelled. Alex returned the following year only to come face to face with another avalanche on his way to camp 1 after a huge earthquake hit Nepal. He was able to reach camp 1 where he was trapped for two days with no access back down the mountain.Alex is now a motivational speaker, author of 2 books 'Ice Fall' and 'Another Peak', endurance athlete and adventurer and he is the founder of the charity MIND OVER MOUNTAINS. In this episode, we have eight lessons from Ultra Endurance, taken from eight separate guests that have appeared on the show. First up, we have Mark Beaumont, ultra-endurance adventurer and multiple world record holder, who discusses how sometimes people over plan, rather than just going out there and building their trade. Next, we listen to Sean Conway, ultra-endurance adventurer, explain how he has dealt with the setbacks in his career and various strategies that have helped him to overcome them. Jonny Pain, ultra-endurance athlete and coach, explains his experience of dealing with the fear and anxiety leading up to an event and how his experiences have influenced his life as a father and a husband.Kris King, ultra-runner and race director, outlines how being honest and fallible is crucial for success and how ultra events refine us as a person. Paul Minter, who ran 5000 miles around Great Britain, talks about how his experience of Ultra running has reinforced that no matter how bad things are, we can get through them if we keep going. Flora Beverley, ultra athlete and businesswoman, describes how she got into ultras and the value of beating your own personal bests rather than comparing yourself to others. Alex Staniforth, adventurer and ultra-endurance athlete, talks about how the body can endure so much and how ultras have helped him to transform his mindset. Finally, Rupert Guinness, ultra-endurance cyclist, discusses how ultras should be seen as a privilege, not suffering, and how he's dealt with the failure of not completing Race Across America. Expect to learn what it takes to do an ultra-endurance event. Expect to think differently about setbacks. Expect to be motivated. Join The Modern Mind mailing list

Joy is...When Nothing Else Matters.Alex Staniforth is a record-breaking adventurer, author and charity ambassador, based in the Lake District. As just 27, he is no stranger to challenges, whether they be mental or physical. He is perhaps best known for surviving the two biggest disasters in Mount Everest history, whilst still only a teenager, including the 2015 Nepal earthquake. Since then, he has achieved numerous feats of endurance, including being the fastest person ever to climb all 100 UK county tops and running the National Three Peaks Challenge, completing 452 miles in just 9 days 12 hours. However, it is the personal mountains that he has faced since childhood: overcoming epilepsy, stammering, bullying and mental ill health, that, for me, distinguish him most, as well as the manner in which he has channelled those experiences into his own mental health advocacy, charity work, public speaking and writing. It is really no wonder that he was awarded the Pride of Britain Granada Reports Fundraiser of the Year in 2017.Alex is someone who really does embody the idea of spinning growth from adversity; however, whereas so many similar stories may appear rose-tinted, it is apparent that Alex's altruism is deeply rooted within his being. Quite simply, he believes that he can help others and therefore he should. Alex's stories in themselves are incredible to hear; however, the frank discussions that we have around mental health that lie behind the stories are ones that I hope are impactful on an even deeper level. Alex is humble and generous in the manner in which he reflects on his own struggles as we consider the stigmatisation around eating disorders, particularly in men; the mythology of mental health equating to weakness; the long-term effects of childhood trauma; survivor's guilt; vulnerability; finding relief in physical challenge and the natural world; getting comfortable with being different and dreaming big; re-framing success; the importance of networks; the responsibilities and rewards of founding a charity; knowing your own strengths, and how we can still show up and make a difference when we are not doing 'hard things'.Thank you, Alex; your work is important, you are important and you certainly 'make the boat go faster'.Support: www.mindovermountains.org.uk Read: www.alexstaniforth.com/booksFollow:Insta @alexstaniforth_Twitter @alex_staniforthFacebook www.facebook.com/AlexAdversity Linkedin www.linkedin.com/in/alexstaniforth Photo Credit: Andy Milton Hosted on Acast. At just 26, Alex Staniforth has already become an expert in overcoming challenges. From epilepsy to a stammer, bullying and mental ill health problems, Alex's biggest challenges have been close to home. Running and the great outdoors have helped him to face them down to become a record-breaking adventurer, motivational speaker, author, mental health ambassador and ultra runner. His incredible story is tinged with sadness as he was part of two of the biggest disasters in the history of Mount Everest. Alex turned to running again and became the fastest person ever to climb all 100 UK county tops. In 2020 he ran the National Three Peaks Challenge – completing 452 miles in just nine days and 12 hours. Perhaps his greatest achievement comes as the founder of mental health charity Mind Over Mountains. Originally aired on March 10, 2016As a young boy, Alex Staniforth dealt with epilepsy and has a stammer as a result of it. Like many kids, he was picked on and bullied in school severely damaging his self-confidence. Amazingly Alex managed to overcome his confidence issues when he discovered a new world of adventure and the feeling of accomplishment. At just 18 years old, he made his first attempt to summit Mt Everest. His story of being turned around by an avalanche in 2014 only to return in 2015 and be caught in the deadliest Everest avalanche on record is one of astonishment and caution. In this episode of #SpeakingBusinessPodcast I talk to Alex Staniforth. Too many people settle for base camp when the summit is out of view. But Alex is no stranger to overcoming adversity. At just 26, he's a record-breaking adventurer, athlete, author and charity founder who has already survived the two biggest disasters in Mount Everest history as a teenager. However, his biggest challenges have been much closer to home, suffering with epilepsy, stammering, bullying and mental ill health. He confronts these through extreme outdoor challenges, to inspire others to achieve their own peak. Now he regularly shares his adventures and ultra-endurance strategies with businesses and conferences internationally, helping them build their 'resilience rucksack' to beat burnout, re-define success and take advantage of the challenges ahead. He is also the founder of Mind Over Mountains, a charity helping people to restore their mental health through the outdoors. My guest today is Alex Staniforth (@Alexstaniforth_) - Alex is an adventurer, speaker, author and charity ambassador. He has made two attempts to climb Mount Everest but this isn't your typical story about climbing Everest. Suffering a mild form of epilepsy at nine years old shattered his confidence and self-esteem with panic attacks and anxiety a regular theme from his childhood. Relentless bullying throughout school and a lifelong stammer in his speech left him - in his own words - with a ‘victim' mindset. After experiencing paragliding on holiday aged just thirteen unearthed his passion for the outdoors he found a way to prove himself wrong, and choose his what challenges him! He began to question these self-limiting beliefs through outdoor challenges, and learned that we can't always choose our challenges – but we can choose how we respond.
Alex Staniforth has battled anxiety, disordered eating, depression, bullying and even avalanches to get to where he is, a trailblazer for achieving mental wellbeing through being outdoors. At just 26, he is already a record-breaking adventurer and ultra-endurance athlete, with a fair few achievements under his belt. Having endured both the 2014 avalanche in Nepal and the earthquake in 2015 whilst attempting an Everest summit, completed the National 3 Peaks by foot in just 9 days and taken on countless other runs, summits and adventures, Alex is a force of nature. It is the force of actual nature however, that has taken him to where he is now, founder of Mind Over Mountain. Mind Over Mountains is a charity that helps restore people's mental wellbeing through the outdoors, mindfulness and “walking and talking.” We dig in to Alex's mental and physical highs and lows over the last few years and how the “Natural Health Service” came to be his knight in shining armour. If you want to join a Mind Over Mountains event, find out more or learn how you can support them, you can visit their website here - https://mindovermountains.org.uk

Claudia Hammond explores the psychology of courage and bravery with an audience at the Cheltenham Science Festival. Why is it that some people are able to keep calm in an emergency and do all the right things whilst others panic or freeze, not knowing what to do? Claudia discusses this question with her guests. Episode 60 We need purpose, not just pills. Since he was a child Alex Staniforth has spoken with a stammer. Given his current role involves public speaking, and his appearance on this podcast as an intelligent, and articulate young man, that may come as a surprise to you. As a child Alex's stammer restricted his ability to communicate and lead to bullying, the consequences of which were periods of severe anxiety and depression for Alex. As a teenager, Alex discovered a love for the outdoors, and in particular endurance activities. Through his new found passion, Alex was able to overcome his anxieties, and now finds himself as a campaigner for better understanding and treatment options for mental ill health. Along the way Alex has continued to battle with depression, as well as an eating disorder, and also feelings of survivor guilt after he encountered two near death experiences whilst attempting to summit Mount Everest. Having experienced the two biggest consecutive disasters in Mount Everest’s history including the 2015 Nepal earthquake which trapped him on the mountain for two days, Alex Staniforth failed to reach the summit on both occasions. https://linktr.ee/BetweenTheMountains Alex Staniforth found that running, walking, and cycling to the highest point in each UK county was faster than the waiting time to receive any mental health support from the UK's National Health Service (NHS). It's not that there's nothing, but rather that the NHS is overwhelmed with so many needing support. It was at this point that Alex started Mind Over Mountains charity - his very own Natural Health Service supporting those in need, and bringing them together as a community. More Than Just Fresh Air Mind Over Mountains go one step further. While bringing you the community and outdoors experience together, they also give you the tools you'll need to better yourself with your headspace. Mind Over Mountains aims to help you find purpose. On this episode I interview Alex Staniforth who shares insight into how to overcome adversity through adventure. We begin by understanding a little bit about Alex and how he discovered his passion for adventure and undertaking challenges at an early age. He then goes on to talk about his own experiences of being bullied and talks about how we all learn through adversity. As someone who has suffered (and continues to suffer - in his words) with a stutter, Alex speaks with clarity and energy. Humble and down to earth, at 23 he's experienced many highs and lows; yet continues in his quest for adventure. This week we have the usual failings in 'tweets of the week' but the episode is saved by an inspiring interview with Alex Staniforth who completed the 3 peaks, Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon, and ran the entire distance between them. This 452 mile journey took 9 days 12 hours 51 mins, missing the current record by just over an hour. Alex completed the challenge to raise funds and awareness for mental health charity Mind Over Mountains.

Before his 21st, at an age when most people are worried about little more than partying, Alex Staniforth had already planned 2 attempts at Everest and sadly seen both end in tragedy. These early setbacks obviously took a toll, but over the last few years, Alex has found new challenges and channeled his own experiences of overcoming mental health problems into creating Mind over Mountains, a charity offering support to those who find themselves tackling the same issues. We chatted with Alex about facing an avalanche on the world's highest peak, visiting every high point in every county of the UK and about managing mental health. Head over to Mind over Mountains to learn more about how Alex is helping to create life-changing outdoor experiences to help restore mental health.
Alex Staniforth, from the United Kingdom, is an accomplished mountain climber who has attempted two summits of Everest. Unfortunately, both attempts ended in tragedy, but that hasn't stopped Alex from accomplishing his other personal "Everests." Alex keeps accomplishing new challenges, including writing two books on his experiences, becoming a public speaker, and raising thousands of dollars for charity.
Alex Staniforth is an adventurer, author of two books and speaker who talks so well about how the outdoors has helped him throughout his life. Alex has been on some serious adventures since he was a teenager, including making two attempts at Everest. Sadly both trips to Everest ended in tragedy. In 2017, Alex completed his challenge Climb The UK, where he journeyed to the highest point of all 100 UK counties. How has the outdoors shaped his life and adventures? Alex is a record-breaking adventurer, keynote speaker, published author, brand ambassador and charity fundraiser from Cheshire, England. He is dedicated to inspiring others to achieve their own ‘Everest’ in life.Alex is not your typical Everest speaker. After single-handedly raising over £35,000 in corporate sponsorship whilst still at school, his first attempt to climb to the summit of Mount Everest in 2014 was abandoned following a tragic avalanche that took sixteen lives. Aged just 19, he returned to Everest a year later and survived an avalanche in the Khumbu Icefall, triggered by the Nepal earthquake, which trapped his team on the mountain for two days. He is no stranger to adversity, having overcome epilepsy, bullying and a stammer in his early life. These experiences have re-defined his view of success and failure to develop a humbling realisation that success lies not just in reaching the top but our journey to get there. We’re doing something a bit different on this week’s podcast. You know I like to shake things up, just to make sure you’re paying attention. So, in addition to finding out more about my guest and getting a bit of an insight into his speeches we dissect his speaking business. We find out how he got started as a speaker, how he started charging, where his paid gigs come from plus lots more. We go deep stopping just short of asking him for his bank balance. So, let’s roll the podcast …. My guest this week is a young adventurer, author and fundraiser from Chester. At just 24 he’s already delivered over 170 talks to businesses, schools and events around the UK and Europe, and he’s also done a TEDx. He’s made two attempts to climb Mount Everest, both ended in disaster. He shares his unique experiences of redefining failure, embracing change and staying resilient through adversity. He has just released his second book Another Peak and has set up a social enterprise supporting mental health through outdoors called Mind over Mountains: www.mindovermountains.org.uk. All this and he is still only 24 years old. Please welcome Alex Staniforth. Today’s story is a small epic of a tale. It starts on the other side of the world, it includes some dramatic moments, some aspirations achieved. I also had to download a beep sound to censor some swear words in this episode - and you’ll soon understand why. This is the story of my first #30at30forEpilepsy challenge. This is my ice climbing adventure. Why Ice Climbing? Well one reason is that I am trying out some of the sports that contributors to Seize Your Adventure already do. Some of you out there will be familiar with a gentleman called Alex Staniforth. Alex was plagued by adversity and epilepsy as a child, and has gone on to do some extraordinary things, including attempting to climb Everest on two occasions. The first time he tried was when he was eighteen, which is quite incredible. So ice climbing is partly inspired by Alex. I figured, this might be one of the harder challenges to arrange. I live near London, a place that’s not really known for its glaciers or icy mountains. I thought I’d have to jet off to another country, brave the cold on the remote side of a mountain, and contend with all the extra risks there might be from having epilepsy in that environment. But I did some research and I learned that there are actually a few indoor icewalls in the UK and the team at Ellis Brigham Mountain Sports invited me along to an session at their indoor wall, called Vertical Chill. So suddenly, from being one of the harder challenges to arrange it became the easiest. I was so excited I made it the 1st challenge and spent some time on MY ACTUAL 30th BIRTHDAY climbing a wall of ice, in the middle of London which is just... so cool. (I’m sorry for the pun.) This is Go the Travel Podcast, a podcast about travel, places, and for today’s story: adventure. All of our episodes have been about travel to places like Cuba, Iceland, or Argentina, but in this episode we’re going to tell you an adventure story about Mt. Everest.
Mick was joined by Alex Staniforth, a 21 year old inspirational speaker who has overcome his own personal battles with bullying, epilepsy and a stammer from a young age. He's a keen adventurer who has attempted to climb Everest twice and has written a book called 'Icefall' which is all about his fascinating journey. You can visit his website here: www.alexstaniforth.com
In Episode 33, Alex Staniforth talks about his recently published book Icefall which details how he survived two of the deadliest seasons of record on Mt. Everest during the 2014 and 2015 climbing seasons. Alex was picked on in his youth, but talks openly about how he channeled his energy in to outdoor activities - which eventually led him to raise funds and climb the tallest mountain in the world. In my first international interview, we discuss backpacking in Nepal, hiking to base camp, life on the mountain, and how he managed to survive the avalanches and rock slides that took many lives over the last two climbing seasons. We also talk about his plans for the future - including where a 20 year old goes from here and how Mt. Everest still fits in to his future. Alex Staniforth is a 20 year old adventurer, ambassador and speaker from Cheshire in England. His story is one of overcoming adversity on his journey to climb Mount Everest, where both of his attempts to reach the summit ended in tragedy with the 2014 and 2015 avalanches. He has recently released his first book ICEFALL endorsed by Bear Grylls and is passionate about helping other people to discover the outdoors and their own 'Everest'.
As an unassuming bullied epileptic with no interest in sports, Alex Staniforth never pictured himself as an athlete. A hill-walking trip at 13 changed his perspective and encouraged him to confront his fears. His quest to climb Mount Everest transformed him physically, mentally, and socially. At the age of 20, Alex is now an endurance adventurer, motivational speaker, charity fundraiser, and published author. He and Jason spoke via Skype about his path to the outdoors, his attempts on Everest during two tragic seasons, and surviving an avalanche.
