It's not often that you meet people that instantly make you feel at ease. Well Julia Franks is one of those people. She is a kind, curious and empathetic listener who is passionate about helping people be it through counselling or conscious dancing. Julia is a professional psychotherapist who has created her own form of therapeutic conscious dance called Flomotion. Born from her own love and appreciation of how music and dance can be a powerful wellbeing elixir. In this episode Andrew Cuerden and Julia explore how dance shapes and forms us as people. As well as what exactly does happen when we get together and dance with others. We also explore what “Conscious Dance” is and how it can help people find more awareness, agency and permission to move through beliefs and emotions without the need of alcohol or drugs. “Being on the dance floor allows us to notice all our patterns and stories that we tell ourselves.”We also touch on why many men in the west find it challenging to dance. Julia gives us a taste of what one would expect from a Flomotion session,“A cross between a disco and yoga class “as well as taste of her recent book “Dance of Life” (available on Amazon) which is a treasure trove of resource and inspiration for those wanting to explore therapeutic dance whether as a facilitator or participant. 053  Since time immemorial humans have danced in tribal and shamanic ceremonies for healing and social harmony.  The rhythmic beat of a djembe or a subwoofer connects us with the internal rhythm of the heart and entrains us with others. When we move together we co regulate our nervous systems in times of high stress. All over the planet the phenomena of ecstatic dance is breaking down barriers to connection and building diverse communities. In a time of great uncertainty dance is the perfect medicine for casting off fear and reconnecting to joy.In this instalment of Awake In Relationship I speak with Shauna Devlin, the founder of Dance Your Ability, a Not for Profit organization that is bringing conscious dance to marginalized populations including elders and the differently abled. Shauna trained in 5 Rhythms with Gabrielle Roth and has rocked dance floors for over 20 years. In this conversation we explore the many facets and forms of conscious dance from the perspective of a seasoned facilitator and DJ.  We also discuss the power of music and moving together for healing old wounds and how to make dance medicine more accessible to those who need it most.Follow Awake In Relationship on Instagram and LinkedinIf you have been loving what you are hearing on AIR  please rate, review and subscribe to get the latest content fresh to your device.  Sign up for our newsletter at awakeinrelationship.com to learn about upcoming programs and events.Do you have suggestions for guests or feedback on the show?  Send us an email at awakeinrelationshippodcast@gmail.com or better yet, fill out a brief audience survey

I discovered Katarina "Kato" Wittich in Gwyneth Paltrow's documentary series “Sex, Love and Goop” episode five, where she guides a client through a Family Constellation session which allows them to understand and process family trauma. It was and remains one of the most powerful moments of television I've ever witnessed, so I was deeply honored when Kato agreed to be in conversation. In doing my research for this interview, I learned much about Kato's dedication to healing through practices that demand deep acceptance and reverence for the interwoven body-mind system. In this conversation, we discuss the Rosen and Family System techniques, the importance of touch, and how ancestral trauma informs our lives. We talk about the need to feel all our feelings and how critical it is to have someone that can allow us to be with those vibrations no matter how strong or seemingly negative. It was a meeting of spirits being in shared space with Katarina. I hope you will benefit from our musings. Katarina Wittich, known as ‘Kato', is a certified Rosen Method Practitioner, Conscious Dance facilitator, Yuen Practitioner, and facilitator for the group transformational modality called Family Constellations. She has had the great privilege to spend the last 25 years using her practices to help other humans voyage past the limitations that come from survival patterns created by trauma, toward wholeness and resilient self love.  Rosen Method is a form of somatic therapy which uses touch as well as verbal interaction in order to contact the contractions in our bodies which we have created in order get through trauma when we do not have enough support to remain open and flexible. In accessing these contractions in the body, we also access all the unconscious patterns that have been necessary to move through the world, but may no longer be useful, and instead now holding us back from living fully. Family Constellations work directly with the unconscious inheritance of survival patterns created to handle trauma by our ancestors. Often we are more susceptible to the difficult things that happen in our lives because of the epigenetic and family culture patterns once needed for survival of the family system, but now hindering us without our knowledge. Constellations are mysterious and incredibly powerful because they function through the group practice of resonance, in which perfect strangers with no knowledge of the client's issues or family system, will easily and accurately be able to represent the client's family members and ancestors, unveiling what was hidden and allowing flow back into the system.  Kato's Family Constellations work is currently featured in Episode Five of Gwyneth Paltrow's documentary series “Sex, Love and Goop”, available on Netflix. She is grateful to have had the opportunity to facilitate in the first mainstream television exposure for this profound and life changing work, in which you can witness the impossible wonder of our interconnectedness, unlimited by time or physicality. For more information on Kato's practices go to her website - RosenConstellations.com In the rest of her life, she is a screenwriter, director, painter, dancer and general lover of all things creative, embodied and human. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Your support is deeply appreciated! Historians attribute the enormous spread of humankind on this planet to two abilities: communication and community. We gather together and exchange thoughts. Thus we can organize ourselves and make the impossible possible for better or worse.  Tribal cultures from around the world have highly prized the communion of dance and music as evidenced by the variety of drums and percussion instruments from around the world.  Fantastic elaborate costumes and sacred elevation accompanied these ceremonies - surely they held greater significance than mere entertainment? In the modern day, we are rediscovering the power of dance and movement through modalities such as ecstatic dance.  Ecstatic dance allows us to enter a state of ecstasy in deep connectedness to ourselves. It brings us back to our roots and our purpose. We come as we are - no shoes, no drugs, no alcohol, no talking. This allows our brainwaves to drop into a state of trance and experience our world from a different perspective. The gentle phase at the end of the dance allows us to integrate these new experiences into our life. This dance liberates us, it anchors our bodies into the frequency of freedom and awakens our most intimate parts.  Join Martin Richtsfeld and David Khan for this incredible discussion!Join Martin for a live Ecstatic Dance DJ set:https://www.octaveleap.com/home/events/ecstatic-dance-a-tribe-awakening/Join the Octave Leap Crypto Community:https://www.octaveleap.com/home/resources/octave-leap-crypto-community/Follow Octave Leap on our Social Platforms:IG:  https://www.instagram.com/octaveleap/Telegram: https://t.me/octaveleapWebsite: https://www.octaveleap.comTwitter: https://twitter.com/Dk_octaveleap

Conscious dance has been a transformational practice for me. As someone who is regularly caught up in the invisible world of my thoughts, conscious dance practices have invited me to return to the wisdom of my body and the moment. On the dance floor, I find my way back to joy through connecting to the music, to my feet, to my breath, and to community. The experience of dancing without drugs and alcohol while holding the intentions of healing, play, and meaningful connection, has been a blessing for me. Omar Aena, founder of Dance Lab in Brooklyn New York, rejoins the podcast to discuss conscious dance and share a special DJ set he created for this episode. Omar and I have a conversation about what we mean when we say "conscious dance," and explore the defining features we value about it. Omar shares the ancient history of the practice and his uncomfortable initial reaction when he was first introduced to 5Rhythms. We also discuss how consent and listening play a critical role in creating transformational dance experiences. It is the coolest, most fun, eclectic dance party out there. To me, it is the archetypical Millennial community. At face value, it seems so simple, centered around dance. But it's actually much deeper than that, and touches many social issues, in terms of inclusivity, stereotypes, gender, race, etc. Is that a fair statement?Tell me about your upbringing briefly. I know you attended NYU….did you grow up in New York City? How would you define your childhood?I know you've spoken previously about trauma, depression, eating disorders, feeling defeated. What advice can you share about trauma healing? Other than dancing as the cure.I want to talk about inclusivity…..But to go from the opposite approach, what has happened with society, where it feels like we can't even express ourselves with words? We've become so polarized, so overly sensitive to anyone feeling marginalized, that the least controversial thing we can do is move our bodies….and even that might be politicized or labeled. Is dance the only safe way to express ourselves anymore?Covid has to be hardest thing for you….how has get down pivoted? So much of energy is about experiencing it with other people, feeding off their body movements. You lose that virtually. What are the barriers? What prevents people from signing up?Dancing often can be associated with drinking or drug use, festivals, burning man, etc. allowing us to free ourselves. but interestingly, you encourage the opposite, and promote sobriety at your events. I'm curious if you could shed light on this decision, and why that is such an important aspect?Competitors….daybreaker. What makes you different? What's the magic sauce that differentiates you? What is something you wish someone had told you five years ago, or you had told yourself, that you had to learn on your own, but would have made life so much easier had you known?

"Very...VERY RELAXING..." was the general response from the Dancing Souls to this set. Another AMAZING journey that allows you to SLOOOW WAY DOWN in your Conscious Dance practice. Transitions are nice and long giving you time to adjust. Enjoy feeling into all spaces your body has -especially those tight, constricted spaces - and gently MOOVING Movement Medicine into them - in order to create more internal and external space. There is a short stint of "GET YA GOING & ROLLIN'" songs - including a RUN-DMC Throwback Thursday! The theme after all was "Returning to the Joy of Movement" that you felt as a child (and I was a kid of the 80s :-0) Journey Set: * Sacred Union (Sacral Chakra) [feat. Lauren Monroe] - by @JonathanGoldman blended with @SonicYogi's "Native American #2 remix" * Iluminar (@Stratusphere Remix)- Poranguí (slowed waaaay down) * Alive - @JorgeMéndez (big bass layered in there 2xs) * Be Patient Towards What Is Unsolved In Your Heart - @Globular * Prayer for Rain ft. @RyanHerr & @LizzyPlotkin (@Antandra Remix) * Evasion -@CloZee * From the Ground Up -@AylaNereo * Avecitos (@Intiche Remix)- @ScottNice feat. @ShiraNetanya * Bonteka (@KalyasBoneTek Remix) - @AylaNereo * Linear Regression - @HolyU * No More - @Gladkill * Kubera (Original Mix) - @DavidAllen * Randez Vous (@CLIMO Bootleg )- @INNA * Lions (Original Mix) - @ANIMA * Boom Boom Pow - @TheBlackEyedPeas * Walk This Way (7" Single Version)- @Run-DMC * Gavi's Song - @LindseyStirling * We're Going Home (Instrumental)- @GuitarTributePlayers * For Eternity - @ArmenMiran (cut short, people were done by then!) * Glime (Kyrstyn Pixton & @AuditoryCanvas) - @KyrstynPixton * Artesian - @TheManyRiversEnsemble * Moon (Instrumental)- @SleepingAtLast (played only the gentle piano parts several times)

PART 2 Conscious Dance is SERIOUS FUN: A Practice & A Reward Listen to first 1/2: https://soundcloud.com/holli-christine-mccormick/movement-medicineecstatic-dance-nashville-serious-fun-1010-part-i ********* 10/10 portal. Did it hit you like it did me yesterday? Yesterday as I prepared this amazing, beautiful set - the Universe had me in tears digging deep to see if I would be devoted and disciplined to move through the technical difficulties and obstacles laid in my way. My tears were not tears of frustration from my difficulties as much as the deep desire to be able to bring the music to Nashville on such a potent night that me and my team could feel this night would be for our small growing community. So I put into PRACTICE that which I have practiced: take a step away, take a deep breath, re-orient myself in my commitment to this practice and begin again. The REWARD? Well, it still continued to be a bit of a process to move through (even now as I see I forgot to reset the default in Traktor to record all in one piece - so please continue listening to part II!!!!) - yet it was another SWEEEEEEEEEEEET space where "Spirit Chills" were in abun*dance to spare those of you that were not able to join us. We were moved to open up our creative, orgasmic centers and dance in sweet bliss within our individual containers - as well as our collective container. Goes to show that music - while sooooo vital of course - is not the only thing that holds these containers together. It is the dedication, devotion, intentions and all the energy behind the intention that I and Issa are holding for us. And of course you too as you grow in understanding and experience of this space. Love to our co-creation. Muah! AND - thank you for the continued creativity, love, devotion of the artists that help us spin, twirl, bounce, shake, shimmy, leap, climb, roll and otherwise move in these spaces. We are eternally grateful for your PRACTICE and pray knowing how you touch us is a bit of a REWARD for you! I pray this set moves you to do the same in your home practice or wherever you listen and move. Movement IS life y'all - from the inner stillness that bounds with chaos - to the other chaos that bounds with stillness. Soooo much love

Conscious Dance is something I think is extremely important in the transformation of a mind, particularly for those with Alzheimer's or at-risk of Alzheimer's. According to Mark Metz, a thought leader in the community, Conscious Dance is essentially "a non-competitive, body based way of raising consciousness." Our guests today are the co-founders of Open Floor Dance. Kathy Altman - is a co founder of Open Floor International, an organization that promotes conscious dance as a form of well being, community building, peace making and creativity. She has danced her whole life but moving without choreography imposed from the outside is the skill she relies on most. Kathy has taught dance to thousands of people on many continents for over 40 years. Lori Saltzman - is a co-founder of Open Floor. Lori stumbled into her first movement workshop with Gabrielle Roth when she was 26 years old. She spent 30 years as Gabrielle’s friend, student and close collaborator. The same vital force that wed her to movement led her to meditation, writing and creativity. Five years ago she co-founded Open Floor International, an collaboration of seasoned movement teachers, artists, therapists, and educators who are translating their wisdom to the dance floor. The 2 primary values of Open Floor Dance: help people move from fixed to fluid movements, extending this into consciousness. "move and include" - when we move, things come up. feelings come up and they can be included and processed in the dance to further our evolution as human beings. In Open Floor we dance to learn rather than learning to dance. It is free-form dance and movement in a safe space. There aren't intentional, structured partners or choreographed dance steps. Often people use this as a practice and community through which they experience many of the common ups and downs. These groups are for young and "old" and are non-exclusionary. All levels of physical ability from professional dancers to dancers/movers in a wheelchair. Our guests cite some research for dance lowering the risk for cognitive impairment and dementia. They also talk about how they are able to push their movement limitations and how the body adapts to continuous activity as they age.
