This interview features the late Camila Batmanghelidjh, and it was recorded and first published on Purposely in July 2020. Camila Batmanghelidjh, Child therapist and charity founder, born 1 January 1963; died 1 January 2024 Obituary - The Angel of Peckham Instantly recognisable in her colourful turbans and kaftans, Camila Batmanghelidjh became a familiar figure in the 2000s, as she toured TV studios to promote her charity Kids Company. Passionate and charismatic, she highlighted the plight of thousands of youngsters in Britain's inner cities, who were being traumatised by poverty, abuse and neglect. She estimated that one in three of those that passed through Kids Company's doors slept on the floor; one in four lived in homes without tables or chairs. Deprived of affection and support, these children, she warned, were at risk of growing up into deeply damaged adults. Her solution was to shower them with loving kindness. At her centres in London, Bristol and Liverpool, children found a daytime home where they could get everything from hot meals to therapy, said The Daily Telegraph. They were given shoes and clean underwear, helped with their homework, and taken to medical appointments. Her aim, she said, was to make unloved children feel worthwhile; and it was a principle that no one was turned away. A formidable networker, she raised tens of millions for her cause. J.K. Rowling and Coldplay were among her high-profile donors; Ruby Wax made a documentary about her; and David Cameron's "hug a hoodie" speech was inspired by her. She was dubbed the "Angel of Peckham". Some questioned whether she enjoyed the limelight a bit too much; but her methods seemed to work, said The Times. Outside observers estimated that in the first few years of its existence, Kids Company had saved 3,000 children from going to jail or committing violent crimes. But as the charity grew (it had 500 employees at one point, and received £46m in public funding), journalists started to question whether her results were as good as she said, and why her charity was being singled out for taxpayer-funded largesse. There were media reports about youngsters being given cash with which to buy designer clothes; and of a young man being sent on a spa break at Champneys. Then, in 2015, the media reported that the charity had mishandled sexual abuse allegations involving its users. In August that year, Kids Company collapsed, and its centres closed. The court praised her dedication, and said Kids Company would have survived had donors not withdrawn, owing to the allegations In 2022, the Charity Commission came to a different conclusion. It criticised Kids Company's "high-risk business model" and failures of oversight in some spending decisions. However, it found that there was no case for regulatory action against any of the key players, and confirmed that there had been no "dishonesty or bad faith". At 11, she was sent to an English boarding school, Sherborne, then took a degree in dramatic arts , before studying psychology at the Tavistock Clinic in London. She spent some time doing social work in south London before starting her charity. After its collapse, she assisted other children's projects, while fighting her legal battles. She was unmarried, and had no children of her own. She said that when she got home to her small flat in West Hampstead after 11-hour days at Kids Company, she was quite glad to be child-free. Batmanghelidjh was unrepentant about her methods: kids who grew up "in ghettos depend on having nice things for their self-esteem", she said. The police found that the sexual abuse claims were unsubstantiated, and in 2021 the High Court cleared her and the other trustees of financial mismanagement. Camila Batmanghelidjh was born, ten weeks premature, into a wealthy Iranian-Belgian family in Tehran in 1963. She weighed 1kg, and was left with an endocrine disorder and neurological problems. Champneys's Row was a conspicuous anomaly at the time of its construction in 1781, the only civilian edifice adjacent to the brick curtain wall defining the eastern edge of East Bay Street. The building's height and novel placement violated provincial zoning laws, and the Champneys family persevered against community opposition to protect their investment. Details of the modification and eventual acceptance of Champneys's Row in the 1780s illuminate an important moment in the history of Charleston's built environment.
John Champneys was a Charleston factor and wharf owner whose loyalty to the British Crown deranged his life during the American Revolution. While surviving documents provide details of his imprisonment, exile, and return, the slender row of brick stores Champneys built during the war at the southeast corner of East Bay and Exchange Streets bear witness to his tumultuous experience. On the next episode of Charleston Time Machine, we'll trace the dramatic rise and fall and rehabilitation of both John Champneys and his controversial, confiscated, and truncated row.
Janey shares some memories of being a backing singer on all the Wham! tours as the new Netflix doc airs. Recently Janey has had a few clients who don't quite 'trust' themselves to stick to their committments but its all about changing our mindset. Marianne Williamson says: ‘Our thoughts are like magnets that attract experiences, people, and circumstances into our lives. When we dwell on negative thoughts, our perception becomes clouded, and it becomes difficult to see beyond our limitations. The key is to detach from our thoughts and observe them without attaching our self-worth to them. Many people turn to unhealthy coping mechanisms like alcohol to numb those negative thoughts.....‘When we feel burdened by our thoughts and overwhelmed by our emotions, it's natural to seek relief. Unfortunately, reaching for substances like alcohol only provides temporary escape, perpetuating the cycle of self-judgment. To break free, we must learn to face our thoughts head-on and develop healthier coping strategies'. Email me at hello@franexcell.com with any questions or take aways! For more, head over to: www.franexcell.com/ Why Self Care Isn't Selfish Self care isn't selfish. In my opinion, both through my training and my personal experience, it really is an essential piece of the puzzle of life and a huge game changer that isn't to be underestimated. The term self care has become a bit ‘buzzy' which I feel often makes people roll their eyes and ignore it rather than sit up and go ‘oh, I should probably do that'. Which is frustrating because usually the simplest things are often the things that could make the biggest difference. But we don't trust it. It seems ‘too simple' to have any real impact and that's simply not the case. Why am I talking about this today? By the time you're listening to this I shall be on a retreat. A retreat that's purely for me and only about my own rest, self care and nervous system care. I will be doing yin yoga, drinking herbal tea, eating delicious balanced healthy food and listening to my body and what it needs. For 5 days. Yes, there's a hot tub…of course! It's particularly important to look after your own wellbeing if you work with people on their mental or physical wellbeing. Again, it's essential. You can take on a lot and you're holding people in ways and spaces they've never been held before. You deal with a lot of emotion. It's a huge responsibility. But it means, in order for you to truly be able to show up as the best, most present version of you, you have to prioritise looking after yourself. I do this on a daily basis, if you follow me on Instagram @imfranexcell you'll always see on my stories i'm either doing my ‘me mornings' i'm at the gym, in the pool, doing Heartmath, using my senate, all sorts of things that are about prioritising myself. There's an underlying tone throughout society that to look after yourself is selfish and it's simply not true. I really believe it's selfless. It's also the key to unlocking more confidence, more self esteem, more calm, more self belief, more self love. Fancy some of that? I thought so. When you DO start to put more of an emphasis on your own self care you might like to know what benefits it might have, apart from the obvious. Looking after yourself and your own wellbeing is a pretty solid way to avoid burnout. You don't want to get burned out. It's not pretty. Burn out happens at the point where your brain and body has had enough and it forces you to take action. So instead of losing time to HAVING to rest you may as well out in a little time now so you can avoid having to. Self care is not a time suck. It's not something that is an annoyance on your to do list that TAKES time away from whatever else you want to be doing or are telling yourself you ‘should' be doing. Self care will actively increase your productivity. Every single time I do my work out, I take the time to be in the pool (on of mine and my nervous systems favourite things to do, I find being in the water incredibly regulating) I do my Heartmath or my meditation or use my sensate I have HUGELY increased levels of motivation, focus and productivity. I talk about this in my miracle ‘me' mornings episode from a few weeks ago. It's a HUGE difference. So if you're looking for your mojo and your motivation, it's being elusive to you. Just give this a try. It actively looks after your nervous system. You want your nervous system to be well looked after because it plays an essential part in your behaviour and, well, pretty much everything in your life. A well looked after nervous system has a larger window of tolerance and capacity to cope with what life throws at you. Your ability to recover from stress and triggers is bigger and quicker. Your behaviour is far more conscious because you're not consistently operating from the emotional part of your brain and in fight, flight or freeze mode. Basically. You want to look after your nervous system, which is what I'm doing this week. It looks after your brain and your memory. Your brain only has the ability to handle so much information in any one day. When you prioritise self care you'll also probably find that you'll sleep better. Which means your brain has the time to recover, get to work on your healing and also make sure your memories are looked after too. Think about it, when you're tired and stressed out or have been burning the candle at both ends what happens to your memory? Your ability to string a sentence together? Your ability to problem solve? Your ability to cope with stressors? You've got to think about what you're wiring into your brain in terms of thoughts, beliefs and behaviours. For the positive and the negative. So when you don't look after yourself what could you be wiring in? That you're not worth the time? That you don't deserve it? That time spent on yourself is ‘wasted'? That you're not important? And what are you wiring in when you DO look after yourself? That you ARE worthy? That time invested in you is time well spent? That you matter? That you're important? Like I said before, and when you think about what I've just said, looking after yourself is an incredible way to increase your self esteem and confidence. For exactly the reasons I've just mentioned. Think about who you need to show up for. Family? Friends? Clients? Making sure you're able to be the best version of yourself is so so important. If you're psychologically and physically looking after yourself everyone around you benefits. The other thing I really want you lovely rock star parents out there to think about is what you're modeling for your kiddos. Think about where you may have learned to NOT look after yourself? What did you see or hear as a child around self care? If we can create a generation of kids who look after themselves, their physical, emotional and mental health. Imagine a world full of emotionally regulated and well rested individuals. I mean, talk about a game changer. Remember, as always, no judgement of yourself, only self compassion and curiosity. You're not always going to get it right, this isn't about piling on pressure for yourself or another way for you to beat yourself up. There are inevitably times when self care goes out the window because of time pressures, or things coming up that we aren't expecting. But it's about making sure you have your plans to go back to it, know that it's important and knowing that you're worth the time too. It's also remembering that self care isn't just bubble baths, yoga and massages. It's looking after your physical, emotional and mental health. It's remembering that all of these are linked. It's preventative in terms of the symptoms that can arise from both of those categories without adequate self care. Remember, if you get ill what happens to your business and the people you need to look after then? It's getting more sleep. It's drinking water. It's also setting boundaries, it's communicating your needs, to both yourself and other people. It's the way you talk to yourself. It's the choices and decisions you make. It's not abandoning yourself. It's noticing when your life is out of balance and choosing to do something about it. It's paying attention to yourself. It's self awareness. Your self care is always going to look different to someone else's so there's no need to compare. Self care in your business might look like acknowledging when something isn't working for you anymore. Or that you've lost your joy. Or that you need a change and actually allow yourself to go there. That's why I'm excited about all the people doing Lauren's subscription box challenge because so many people are going to find a new way to ‘spark joy' in their business. Me included. I think subscription boxes are such a great way to inject some fun into your business. It's a great business model where you get to shop for things you love, you get to give that joy to your subscribers every month AND you also get that sweet sweet recurring revenue that I'm always talking about. So you know where you're at every month. AND if you don't want to be a personal brand but know you want a business it's an incredible business model for that too. Anyhoo…If you missed me talking about Lauren, she's a friend of mine and the absolute QUEEN of starting subscription boxes. She's got 3 (nearly 4) of her own and she's grown them hugely in the last 18 months. If you missed her challenge last week it's not too late, she's going to do a recap on her masterclass tonight (Monday 4th July 2022 that is) If you haven't already signed up, it's tonight at 8pm UK. https://bit.ly/subsmasterclass She's also going to be talking about her amazing end to end programme ‘Tick all the boxes' which is everything you need to be able to set up and launch your subscription box from scratch. She even teaches you ways that you don't have to front up the cash for the products too. If now feels like the right time for you, and if you sign up with me, you'll also get access to all my bonuses too. If you're in the first 5 people to buy you'll get to come spend the day with me at the very place I do a lot of the things i've been talking about today. Eastwell Manor in Kent. It's just an hour outside of London and my very own self care oasis. It's a Champneys' spa hotel and I'm there at least 3x per week looking after myself in various ways. We'll have afternoon tea together up at the manor and spend the day masterminding and taming mindset gremlins. Not only with me but with Lauren herself too. I've promised her a go in the hot tub and she's very excited. Even if you aren't in the first 5 you'll also get (on top of all of her bonuses) a 60 minute 1:1 with me, access to my Positive Pants Toolkit membership for 6 months (including the monthly group calls) and you'll get my Attitude of Gratitude chunky journal delivered to your door too. Cart opens after the masterclass tonight and you'll be able to jump in and have me supporting you on your journey to being the owner of your very own subscription box. So, bearing ALL of this in mind I want to leave you with one little thought. Rest is not lazy. Self care is not selfish. They are integral to your happiness and you deserve every minute of it. Fx

Episode 46 That Great Business ShowPresented by Conall O Morain2.00" Breege O'Donoghue's first insight is that a retailer should be 'producing what you sell, not selling what you produce'.When Breege joined Penneys they had 'just' 24 shops, they now have near 400 stores in 14 jurisdictions. She tells stories about the retailing legend, Arthur Ryan, (RIP, July 2019). 'He was not a tough man, not a tough bone in his body'.For her first major meeting in London, Arthur Ryan 'borrowed' Breege's shoes, so Breege goes to the meeting in her hotel slippers. On another occasion Ryan (a great mimic) pretended to be Gregory Peck, making her run out of Champneys, the world famous health resort. She offers three lessons that Arthur Ryan taught her.'There are no mistakes, only learnings'It's all right to look for help, in fact it's a very positive'You're probably at your strongest when you're at your weakest, and to realise that'Why Penneys/Primark didn't want to have an Irish business in Spain or Germany, but to have a Spanish business in Spain, a German business in Germany. She explains their rigorous code of conduct for suppliers.Penneys' first UK store was in Derby. She explains why Derby was chosen and why feet on the ground was essential."Don't be afraid to take risk. That's what business is about"Breege tells us what makes a great buyer and how TU Dublin has been an essential part of finding great talent, for many years. She talks of the importance of buyers being at festivals and night clubs all over the world. The difference for buying teams, buying for Florida versus buying for Chicago. Why do Spaniards like slippers? Americans don't have duvets, but have comforters - there's a reason behind each difference.22.00" Breege explains the importance of independent audits making sure that garments are made ethically. She speaks of being in Gujarat and of the Penneys/Primark backed scheme that saw small holders increase profits from their cotton grow by 200%. That 'Cotton Connect' programme now extends to 185,000 women across many cotton producing countries. She says that 'doing the right thing' is very important. She talks about their very, very small management team, known at the time as the 'Gang of Four'. She references the rows they had, and the reconciliations -'Let's move on'.What are the opportunities for another Irish retailer to make it internationally? She says that replacing retailers lost to Covid is a first priority. She says that 'the high street will always survive' and talks of what's happening to retail in Paris. She explains how Primark in Birmingham gives customers an 'experience', far more than a clothing shop - it includes a Disney café, the first outside the Disney properties.Data is hugely important, she expects to see so much more on garment tags. There was Beatlemania, SpiceGirlMania and now...Primania....the excitement that happens when a Primark store initially opens. She explains the process they go through when opening a store, the meticulous planning and consultation, and of course....PR.39.00" What does she tell young businesses she mentors. i) education ii) be curious iii) take a risk iv) 'do the right thing' v) understand the differences vi) read all the fashion magazines, including Vogue, Bazaar and not just the UK versions, but also the Spanish, US versions etc...She emphasises networking. She tells us the Breege O'Donoghue way of telling a co-worker that 'things are not working out'.She says in her lifetime she has come across very few bad employees, but she has come across bad managers.'Empower young people. Pile responsibility on their shoulders to see where they'll go'.Where are suppliers (who have been in business for years) getting their ideas? Check it out, and ask.She explains (kind of!) how hard she worked, sometimes 7 days a week. Holidays were shorter than normal an one day/all day trips to the UK were regular. She hints at what some of the boardroom 'discussions' aka rows, were about.Did it ever come to the board to change the name from Penneys to Primark? Her involvement in other businesses and on the board of private and State businesses. She may have liked to have been an astronaut!Breege's 'hire in a heartbeat'....she refuses to answer, but eventually.....opts for Bono. And what is she doing now, besides sometimes TWO yoga classes a day....and her obsession with sports (she digresses into the wonderful 1990 World Cup, Mick McCarthy, Ray Houghton), the T-shirts being printed overnight depending on who Ireland was playing, their platinum record in aid of the Children's Hospital. Her competition to spell 'Schillaci'.That Great Business Show is proudly sponsored by De Facto Shaving Oil Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

It was my great pleasure today to interview holistic aesthetician, face yogi, beauty guru, trainer and best selling author Kris Davies on her journey from training in beauty at Champneys in 1983 to recovering from Fibromyalgia to developing her own vegan skin care range for humans and animals to being a Face Yoga teacher and trainer. There is no way this lady is 56, if you take a look at her before and after Face Yoga pictures, you can see that she walks her talk and her methods get results. It was inspiring to hear her journey from being a beauty therapist and how she developed fibromyalgia, to how she rooted out the cause of her illness and transformed it with RTT (Rapid Transformational Therapy) and went on to develop her own range of vegan, chemical free skin care before becoming a Face Yoga practitioner and teacher.Listen along to her amazing story and if you ant to see the proof of her path, check her out on her website and social media siteshttps://krisdavies.com/https://www.facebook.com/kristineliane.davies.3https://twitter.com/davies_kristinehttps://www.instagram.com/sav_eeskin/https://www.facebook.com/skinsoapbar/https://www.linkedin.com/in/kris-davies-150a2946/

Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2020.07.23.217513v1?rss=1 Authors: Wing, J. D., Champneys, T. S., Ioannou, C. C. Abstract: Anthropogenic activity can increase water turbidity, changing fish behaviour by reducing visibility. The spread of invasive species is also facilitated by human activity, further increasing the pressure on native species. In two experiments we measured the foraging efficiency, risk perception and inter-individual consistency of risk-taking (personality variation in boldness) of an invasive species, the Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), and a threatened tilapia, the Manyara tilapia (Oreochromis amphimelas), in clear and turbid water. In experiment one, O. niloticus was faster to initiate feeding, encountered more food items, and consumed more than O. amphimelas. The latency to start foraging by O. niloticus decreased in turbid water. Turbidity did not affect the latency to start foraging in O. amphimelas but the number of food items they encountered was highest at the intermediate turbidity. There was however no significant effect of turbidity in either species on the total food consumed. In contrast to this foraging context, in experiment two with a refuge and no food available, risk taking behaviour was similar in both species and they both responded with similarly reduced risk taking in turbid water. Evidence of personality variation was weak, being observed only in O. amphimelas when first leaving the shelter in turbid water. Overall, species differences were greater in the foraging context but turbidity was more important in the risk-taking context. O. amphimelas is more sensitive to turbidity during foraging, and O. niloticus is likely to have a competitive advantage in foraging situations, especially in degraded turbid habitats. "This is a matter of trust – spa and wellness operators must be scrupulous when making claims about the benefits of all treatments and wellness experiences." - Liz Terry, CEO Leisure Media. This comment was in reference to an article in Spa Business about leading UK Spa Operator, Champneys, facing 19 charges essentially relating to false Wellness claims. It's a timely warning as so many Hotels and Spas seek to jump on board the Wellness Wagon. Exaggerated (or even false) claims may not have been such a big deal when we were selling pampering and relaxation. However, if Hotel Spas want to go down the Wellness Road, we'd better make damn sure we curb our enthusiasm a little when it comes to such claims. It's important to really be conscious about how you want to approach your meals. You can look at it being reactive vs. proactive. Do you want to wait until 5 o'clock and scramble to figure something out last minute or do you want to take a step back and be more thoughtful about planning your meals in advance? If I want to take things to the next level, for me that means doing some work up front with batch cooking. It does take some work, but then meal prepping actually helps me save time in the long run and makes life easier. - Allison Schaaf JOIN THE FACEBOOK GROUP | REVIEW THIS PODCAST 20% OFF ORGANIFI - USE CODE: WELLNESSFORCE Tired of overthinking, stressing, and wasting time thinking about what you're going to have for dinner each night? Power Quotes From The Show "I have to eat as healthy as my clients and in order for me to do that, I had to take my own meal prepping to the next level. I just had to implement that system to help me reach my own goals." - Allison Schaaf of @PrepDish http://bit.ly/wfpodcast "Batch cooking ultimately helps you set yourself up for success. Choose a consistent day and time each week for when you can do your meal prep. Even if you just chop vegetables in advance, it really makes life easier and makes you more likely to include vegetables with each meal if they're already prepared ahead of time." - Allison Schaaf "Going to a grocery store with a list is key because that's where so much time is wasted during the week. If you have to take an extra trip to the grocery store, your losing time. There are a lot more options now to make grocery shopping more efficient such as grocery delivery or online shopping. Plus, ordering online will helping meal prepping so much easier by planning in advance. At Prep Dish, we're also thinking of different ways of making that grocery experience super efficient but it all starts with making a list." - Allison Schaaf "People jump into batch cooking thinking they have to do it, want to do it, or need to do it but can't find the time to actually do it. So, you first have to believe in the idea that this is going to help save you time later on, this is why I want to do it, and this is why it's important to me instead of thinking of it as something that you should do. Stop seeing it as something you should be doing and think of it as something you want to be doing." - Allison Schaaf "Having a meal prepared in advance that includes the core pieces of vegetables, protein, and healthy fats will help you avoid eating an unhealthy meal when you're stressed. Whether you're stressed or not, a healthy meal is going to help keep you from going on a built up blood sugar spiral." - Allison Schaaf Links From Today's Show Allison Schaaf LinkedIn Twitter Instagram YouTube Prep Dish Facebook YouTube Pinterest Google+ WFR 037 - How to Avoid Meal Prep Burnout with Allison Schaaf Free 2 Week Prep Dish Trial The Prep Dish Blog Prep Dish: Paleo & Gluten-Free Meal Planning Prep Dish: 21-Day Meal Prep Challenge Instant Pot Paleo f(x) Thrive Market US Wellness Meats Butcher Box Paul Chek What Does BPA-Free Mean?
