As you'll hear from the introduction into this podcast, Vicki Edgson, in many people's eyes, found success as she rode the wave of nutritional education in the early 00's, with 11 books, a consultancy in Chelsea and a phone ringing for interviews and opinions on the latest food craze.Fast forward to 2024 and Vicki has found herself within a small community in Wiltshire, working her allotment, and finding contentment in ‘being' rather than ‘doing'. It's not been an easy path by any standards, with 3 strokes, which almost killed her. However it was a catalyst that brought about a slower life but perhaps a lot more contented life. If I woke up and put one foot in front of the other, I could gradually get my life backSome of you will know Vicki from her incredible books. Her first series were under The Food Doctor label, co-authored with Ian Marber, and her well-known TV series for Channel 5 The Diet Doctors, co-presented with Dr. Wendy Denning, for which they also released a best-selling book by the same name. Other books are ‘Broth', ‘It must be Hormones' and ‘GutGastronomy', co-written with Adam Palmer. She launched the Food Doctor range of foods into Tesco, back in the early 2000's and subsequently the Honestly Healthy range of foods into Selfridges and Waitrose with her god-daughter, Natasha Corrett. She works with the principles of Chinese Herbal Medicine, Ayurvedic Medicine and Naturopathic Integrated Medicine which made her a leading authority in nutrition. We agreed before the recording to keep it short, as focus is a challenge for Vicki, but as you'll hear we both felt that the conversation circled perfectly back to everything she really wanted to share with you all. It's a gentle, open and very moving conversation, and one we hope touches you in a way that makes you stop and think. Please enjoy and if you have any questions for Vicki or us, do let us know.Vicki previously wrote a beautiful piece ‘I am vulnerable but I am not weak', for our Soulhub Journal The Collective about her experience not long after the third stroke, when she was adjusting to her new way of life. You can find out more about the 100 short soul stories and art in the Soulhub Journal here.Thank you for listening to our Soulhubber's Podcast with Vicki Edgson. D-Day: The Last Voices brings together a rich collection of historical audio testimonies recorded with those who fought in the invasion of Normandy, alongside extraordinary new interviews with the last surviving veterans, to tell their story of D-Day as it unfolded.Presented by Paddy O'Connell, each programme charts a distinct chapter of the complex, visceral and moving story of the invasion, from subterfuge and secret planning, to the approach of H-Hour, the landings by air and sea, and on into the battles beyond the beaches.Commissioned as a collaboration with D-Day: The Unheard Tapes for BBC Two, and drawing on the same longitudinal access and research, the series tells the story of D-Day through the last voices of those who lived it, leading us through their personal experiences of the invasion. Supported by the historical recordings of those who were there with them – this is their story, told in their own words. As the series draws to a close, Paddy spends time with and hears from the last surviving veterans of D-Day, both those who were part of the Allied invasion force, and others who grew up in the shadow of the operation in a decimated Normandy. In the aftermath of 6th June 1944, veterans recall their sense of loss, of legacy and contribution, and above all, their responsibility to remember friends and comrades who lost their lives in the conflict. This final part of the story explores what came next, in the aftermath of the invasion. The ferocious and bloody battle that followed, in which over 100,000 people lost their lives, and the weeks of brutality that paved the road to liberation, and made it possible. Hearing about the impact, in both nightmares and memories, that it had on those who were there is deeply moving, and commemorates this 80th anniversary with power, humility, pathos and emotion, remembering those who were left behind on the battlefields, in the marshes, fields forests and on the beaches of Normandy.Featuring: Joe Cattini Geoffrey Weaving Alec Penstone John Dennett Mark Packer Michel Deserable John Forfar Christian Lamb Pat Owtram Eddie Edwards James Kelly Nat Hoskot Roy CraneWritten and presented by Paddy O'ConnellProduced by Paul Kobrak Technical production by Richard Courtice Sound design by Roy Noy, Tom Chilcot, Alex Short, Adam Palmer, Paul Donovan Music composed by Sam Hooper Production Executive – Anne-Marie Byrne Archive Assistant Producer – Hannah Mirsky Archive: BBC News, The D-Day Story Portsmouth, Paddy O'Connell, made in partnership with Imperial War Museums. Supported by the historical recordings of those who were there with them – this is their story, told in their own words. As Allied soldiers begin their missions inland from the beaches, their missions become focused on taking strategic targets in the villages and towns, on the way to Caen and Cherbourg. The battle becomes one of hedgerow fighting, in what will become known as ‘the bocage'. Back-up comes from the air for the Allies as the most widespread frontline carpet bomb drop in history takes place. French villages are reduced to rubble. With mounting civilian casualties, dreams of liberation are turning sour for the French. The men of British Airborne who took Pegasus Bridge under the command of Major John Howard are met by the Commandos of the First Special Service Brigade. Work begins on the beaches to build temporary ports. Paddy O'Connell discovers, through the interviews of the last surviving veterans of D-Day and those who fought with them, in historical recordings, that the men who had successfully landed on D-Day could still fail. All still faced the possibility of perishing, despite the historic scale of the invasion.Featuring: Gordon Prime Mark Packer Geoffrey Weaving Bill Gladden Michel Deserable John Clegg Nat Hoskot Ivan Lambert Bill Millin Wally Parr John Howard Stanley Scott Warwick Nield-Siddall James Kelly Eddie Edwards Roy CraneWritten and presented by Paddy O'ConnellProduced by Paul Kobrak Technical production by Richard Courtice Sound design by Roy Noy, Tom Chilcot, Alex Short, Adam Palmer, Paul Donovan Music composed by Sam Hooper Production Executive – Anne-Marie Byrne Archive Assistant Producer – Hannah Mirsky Archive: BBC News, The D-Day Story Portsmouth, Paddy O'Connell, made in partnership with Imperial War Museums. For many of the young soldiers on both sides, this is the first time they have seen action, and the closer the shore comes, the more excitement is replaced with terror. At Omaha, the American landing craft are carried off course by strong currents. Worse still they discover that the pre-invasion naval bombardment has largely missed the German bunkers. Men see their friends gunned down before they even step foot on the shore. British Commandos peddle bicycles from Sword beach to act as reinforcements, and tank commanders describe scenes of untold terror on the beaches as they try to cross the sand. Finally, movement off the beaches seems possible, but as the Allied Forces move off the beaches and into the Normandy countryside, danger lurks at every turn.Featuring: Don Duffield-Abdy Bernard Morgan Joe Cattini Jim Glennie Geoffrey Weaving Ted Batley Ray Nance William Dunn James Kelly Stanley Scott Ray Nance James Sink Warwick Nield-Siddall John Clegg Bill MillinWritten and presented by Paddy O'ConnellProduced by Paul Kobrak Technical production by Richard Courtice Sound design by Roy Noy, Tom Chilcot, Alex Short, Adam Palmer, Paul Donovan Music composed by Sam Hooper Production Executive – Anne-Marie Byrne Archive Assistant Producer – Hannah Mirsky Archive: Fremantle, BBC News, Paddy O'Connell, made in partnership with Imperial War Museums.Executive Producers - Morgana Pugh and Rami TzabarA Wall to Wall Media production for BBC Radio 4

Supported by the historical recordings of those who were there with them – this is their story, told in their own words. As night falls on 5th June 1944, 18,000 men ready themselves to leave Britain and embark on their missions. They will be the first in behind enemy lines on D-Day. In parachutes, planes and gliders, they set off, and approach the Normandy coast as night gives way to the early hours of 6th June, marking the beginning of D-Day itself. Dropping in their thousands, many find they land far from their targets, alone, wounded or dying as their parachutes become waterlogged in flooded fields. 12,000 aircraft drop them in, and pilots and soldiers within with those aircraft lead us through the story, some of whom make the jump, describing in visceral and revealing detail how dangerous and tense their mission was.At the Bénouville Bridge on the Orne Canal, later known as “Pegasus”, a glider breaks apart as it lands and Major John Howard, Eddie Edwards and Wally Parr from the British Airborne recount their crash landing. Taking targets like this bridge is an essential part of the operation, for protecting the wider invasion zone and the beaches. In just a few short hours, the biggest amphibious landing in history will commence.Featuring: Geoffrey Weaving Bernard Morgan Marie Scott Joe Cattini Ray Nance Terence Otway Des O'Neill Eddie Edwards John Howard Wally Parr Victor Newcomb Nat Hoskot Warwick Nield-Siddall William DunnWritten and presented by Paddy O'Connell Produced by Paul Kobrak Technical production by Richard Courtice Sound design by Roy Noy, Tom Chilcot, Alex Short, Adam Palmer, Paul Donovan Music composed by Sam Hooper Production Executive – Anne-Marie Byrne Archive Assistant Producer – Hannah Mirsky Archive: The D-Day Story Portsmouth, BBC News, Paddy O'Connell, made in partnership with Imperial War Museums.Executive Producers - Morgana Pugh and Rami TzabarA Wall to Wall Media production for BBC Radio 4

Supported by the historical recordings of those who were there with them – this is their story, told in their own words. The series begins in June 1944, as more than two million troops from over a dozen countries assemble across Southern England for a mission so secret, they don't yet know it will be D-Day, the start of Operation Overlord, to take France and attempt to push back the Nazi occupation of Europe. Allied soldiers train for top secret missions, by air and sea, and receive their mission objectives in sealed camps. This episode charts the story of the reveal of D-Day to Allied troops, as they learn they will be part of what will become the largest seaborne invasion in history. An operation of such complexity and risk, nothing of this scale had ever been attempted before, the stakes are unimaginably high.Paddy O'Connell, whose father took part in Operation Overlord as a Royal Marine Commando, interweaves the powerful and striking archive recordings of those who were there, with unique and extraordinary interviews with some of the last surviving veterans on the eve of the 80th anniversary of D-Day. Meeting two former WRENS - Christina Lamb who helped draw the D-Day maps in Whitehall, and Pat Owtram who spoke German and was based on the Dover Cliffs scanning for morse code from Occupied France, we are led through the enormous scale of the landings as 156,000 troops prepared for the impending invasion. In archive recordings of the past, we hear from those who were there too, on landing craft and on ships, driving tanks or learning they would be part of the first waves onto the beaches. As the hour of leaving for Normandy approached, commanders trusted in their training, and hundreds of thousands of soldiers set sail or took flight for the French coast under the cover of darkness. Prophesy, and say to them, ‘This is what the Lord God says to the shepherds: Woe to the shepherds of Israel, who have been feeding themselves! Shouldn't the shepherds feed their flock? 3 You eat the fat, wear the wool, and butcher the fattened animals, but you do not tend the flock. 4 You have not strengthened the weak, healed the sick, bandaged the injured, brought back the strays, or sought the lost. Instead, you have ruled them with violence and cruelty. 5 They were scattered for lack of a shepherd; they became food for all the wild animals when they were scattered. 6 My flock went astray on all the mountains and every high hill. My flock was scattered over the whole face of the earth, and there was no one searching or seeking for them. 7 “ ‘Therefore, you shepherds, hear the word of the Lord. 8 As I live — this is the declaration of the Lord God — because my flock, lacking a shepherd, has become prey and food for every wild animal, and because my shepherds do not search for my flock, and because the shepherds feed themselves rather than my flock, 9 therefore, you shepherds, hear the word of the Lord! 10 “ ‘This is what the Lord God says: Look, I am against the shepherds. I will demand my flock from them and prevent them from shepherding the flock. The shepherds will no longer feed themselves, for I will rescue my flock from their mouths so that they will not be food for them. -- Ezekiel 34:1-10 (CSB) Musical Reflection: “Air on the G String” from Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D Major by J.S. Bach Reflection Notes: The slow, descending bass line creates musical “steps” in an elegant fashion while a suspended melody several octaves above creates a satisfying combination of sound registers. Prayer: This is another day, O Lord. I know not what it will bring forth, but make me ready, Lord, for whatever it may be. If I am to stand up, help me to stand bravely. If I am to sit still, help me to sit quietly. If I am to lie low, help me to do it patiently. And if I am to do nothing, let me do it gallantly. Make these words more than words, and give me the Spirit of Jesus. Amen.

Fort Worth Cold Case detectives solved the murder of 17-year-old Carla Walker after it had gone cold for nearly five decades. They analyzed old evidence using genetic genealogy and new DNA extraction technology pioneered by Othram, a forensic genealogy lab in the Woodlands, a suburb of Houston. 17-Year Old Carla Walker Abducted in August of 1974 Othram matched the DNA to a test submitted to a genealogy site by a member of the killer's family tree. Othram did not disclose the relative's name. Cold case investigators Jeff Bennett and Leah Wagner identified 78-year-old Glen McCurley, who was among the original suspects. McCurley confessed to them when confronted with the DNA evidence. Genetic genealogy was used in the Golden State Killer case, but this was the first time the technology made it to a courtroom. Glen McCurley Sentenced To Life In Prison Under McDuff Capital Murder Law McCurley pleaded guilty after two days of testimony in his capital murder trial in August of 2021. More than 1,000 cases remain unsolved in Fort Worth alone. Paying for expensive DNA tests and travel expenses for investigators makes the task even more difficult. Good Morning, Colorado, and welcome to the Daily Sun-Up from the Colorado Sun. It’s Monday February 8th, and we’re feeling lucky to start the day with you. Join us daily for an in-depth look at one of our top stories. Today - Just weeks into Representative Lauren Boebert’s term, multiple Democrats have already launched campaigns to unseat her. Colorado Sun Editor Larry Ryckman and Politics Writer Jesse Paul are here to discuss. Before we begin, let’s go back in time with some Colorado history adapted from historian Derek R Everett’s book “Colorado Day by Day”: Today, we take you back to February 8th, 1879 when Governor Frederick W Pitkin signed a bill to establish the Colorado Insane Asylum. Later, in 1917 it was renamed the Colorado State Hospital and it is now the Colorado Mental Health Institute. It cares for several hundred residents. And now, our feature story. Thanks for listening. Finally, here are a few stories you should know about today: The long-awaited rollout of federal unemployment benefits for those who have used up all other options will begin February 22nd. Colorado Department of Labor and Employment officials made the announcement Sunday. Many unemployed Coloradans, including those who are self-employed, gig workers, or who had used up their unemployment compensation, were left out of the first round of benefits. Four men who survived a massive avalanche near Silverton on February 1st spent hours looking for three of their companions who were buried, but were stymied by deep snow and in one case, a 10 year old avalanche beacon that was transmitting a "ghost" signal. Search and rescue experts had to use power tools to free the dead men from where they were buried under as much as 20 feet of snow, according to a final report by the Colorado Avalanche Information Center released Sunday. The slide killed Andy Jessen, Adam Palmer and Seth Bossung , who were revered Eagle County leaders. More than 400 thousand people are eligible to get a coronavirus vaccine starting Monday. People ages 65 to 69, K-12 educators and child care workers, and a small number of government officials are part of the state’s so-called Phase 1 B 2 of the vaccine rollout. More than a quarter of Colorado is now eligible, but many have reported issues getting an appointment and supply is still low. Good Morning, Colorado, you’re listening to the Daily Sun-Up. It’s Thursday February 4th, and even though there’s a lot of turmoil right now we’re feeling lucky to start the day with you. Today - In Denver, overdoses involving fentanyl more than doubled in 2020 compared with the year before. Steve Kotecki, the public affairs specialist with the Denver field office of the DEA spoke with The Colorado Sun about what’s contributing to this rise. But before we begin, let’s go back in time with some Colorado history adapted from historian Derek R Everett’s book “Colorado Day by Day”: Today, we’re going back to February 4th, 1954 when William, or Billy, Adams, the first Colorado Governor elected to three consecutive terms, passed away. He was a political force for decades and offered an effective voice for rural Coloradans. Now, our feature story. For the past several years, law enforcement and public health officials have warned that fentanyl -- a potent, synthetic opioid powder causing a spike in overdoses on the coasts -- would soon arrive in Colorado. And based on the latest statistics, it’s clearly here. Statewide, overdose deaths involving fentanyl more than doubled, rising 111% to 452 deaths last year from 214 in 2019. Health officials worried that the coronavirus pandemic, which kept people isolated and led to increased rates of anxiety and depression, would also lead to more drug deaths. Data released at the close of 2020 proved those fears true. Colorado Sun reporter Jennifer Brown spoke with Steve Kotecki, the public affairs specialist with the Denver field office of the DEA, to find out how fentanyl arrived in Colorado. Kotecki and Brown also discussed the counterfeit oxycodone that’s sold on the streets, and why it’s so dangerous. State Rep. Leslie Herod, a Denver Democrat, said Colorado is already behind in addressing fentanyl overdoses, but she does not have plans to introduce legislation that would allow a supervised drug consumption site. Herod, who traveled to Vancouver a couple of years ago to visit a government-sanctioned drug injection site, said there is plenty of evidence showing the sites save lives. She said she would support one here if that’s what the community wants. Such a site could warn people about fentanyl, help detect it in the drugs brought on site, and coordinate with law enforcement to make sure dealers are caught. To learn more about this story visit us at Coloradosun.com. Before we go, here are a few stories that you should know about today: The three men killed in an avalanche on Monday near Silverton have been identified as prominent Eagle County community members. One of the victims, Adam Palmer, was a newly elected Town of Eagle trustee. Another was Andy Jessen, who co-founded Bonfire Brewing in Eagle. Seth Bossung was the third man who died in the avalanche. He managed projects for the county’s energy efficiency department. State Senator Kerry Donovan has filed paperwork launching her campaign to unseat Republican Congresswoman Lauren Boebert next year. Donovan is a Vail Democrat. She is citing Boebert’s tumultuous start in Washington, D.C. She joins a Democratic primary field that includes Gregg Smith, a businessman and rancher who lives in Westcliffe, and Colin Wilhelm, a Glenwood Springs lawyer.
