My guest today is Aaron Frank, who is the Brand Director at Serial 1 Cycle company, the electric bicycle company borne of Harley-Davidson. They're an interesting company, they act as a startup, but have access to all of Harley-Davidson's engineers and assets. I've had the pleasure of riding several of their bikes over the past couple of years, including their new hardtail mountain bike launched this year. They've given some electric bikes to the local police department, something near and dear to my heart, so I wanted to talk to Aaron about it, and about what's coming next from Serial 1.

Aaron Frank is Adjunct Faculty at Singularity University, where he routinely advises large companies, startups, and governments on trends related to augmented and virtual reality and the use of virtual environments. Organizations like Twitter and FC Barcelona have benefited from his services. He is a researcher and writer whose articles have appeared in Vice, Wired, Forbes and VentureBeat. Aaron joins Barry O'Reilly in this week's show to define the metaverse, and how to leverage it in your own business. The First Foray Aaron talks about his thoughts when he first encountered immersive virtual reality headsets. He was tasked with doing an impromptu presentation for foreign investors and unfortunately didn't execute it well. When he put on the VR headset, he thought about recreating the environment of the presentation as a sort of “public speaking simulator.” He went on to build a very basic version of it and was surprised by how true-to-life it felt. That was when he realized that VR wasn't just for gaming. “This [was] a new way for people to experience anything,” he shares. “[It] can replicate almost any experience.” [Listen from 2:19] Behind the Scenes of AR and VR The internet of the future will be immersive. Barry asks Aaron to describe his experience diving into the metaverse. “It's important to make a distinction between augmented and virtual reality technologies,” Aaron says, “because those terms typically refer to the kinds of interfaces [necessary for each.]” An interface is a way of engaging with the digital environment, similar to how we use a mouse and a keyboard to operate our computers the way we want to. Aaron predicts that in the near future, however, we won't need a mouse and keyboard; we'll be using VR headsets and our arms. [Listen from 8:06] Manipulating the Metaverse The metaverse allows you to manipulate physical space in a virtual environment and mimic social behavior to recreate real-life experiences. People are using the metaverse to train employees, Barry shares. They are put to the test in stressful situations to observe how well they respond as a team; from speaking individually to escape rooms that require cooperation and serve as a fun activity. Advancements in the metaverse are happening so quickly, he adds. “It doesn't have to be this ‘ready player one' experience where you put on the headset and can't tell whether you're in the real world or not,” Barry comments. “It can just be blocky characters.” [Listen from 17:59] Why Game Engines are Serious Business Aaron is not advocating for a future immersed in VR. “It's worth remembering that these are valuable tools, and it's worth understanding what they are used for… they're not meant to - and should not be used to - replace physical reality in any way,” he affirms. He debunks some misconceptions about the metaverse and proposes a new way of thinking about it. The metaverse is being built by game developers using game engines, but the term game is misleading; game engines are software tools that developers use to build on virtual environments. [Listen from 24:33] The Truth About Gaming There's a lot more to gaming than meets the eye, Barry points out. People don't really know how much thought goes into things like simulation, incentive design, teaching people new skills, and leveling them up on their journey to mastery. “[In] any game you join, the experience is all about building skills,” he says. He talks about the skills that games teach you, like rapid experimentation, risk taking, and teamwork. “[Rather than] meaning fun and childish play, games are about coordination, incentive design and skills development.” He and Aaron explore the concept of safe-to-fail environments. Today on the Exponential Africa Show Mic Mann meets with Aaron Frank, Singularity University principle faculty on AR & VR, writer, researcher and a prolific thought leader around the future of business and innovation.Aaron talks about the AR cloud, stating it be the most exciting topic in computing today. The cloud holds digital copies of every physical object, a 1 to 1 digital map of everything in the real world, a digital twin of our entire planet. The game Fortnight Aaron states, is a really great way to explain what an online virtual world in the future might be.Fortnight is much more than the game, it's becoming more of a online social space, beyond the gaming application real cultural activities are happening in the space. Fortnight held a concert that had 10 million people connected from all over the world together virtually to experience this concert. This has nothing to do with the game, it was purely for entertainment. AR and VR is creating another social layer in our lives, education, work and many other aspects of life could be soon experienced on AR and VR.Watch the full video to gain full understanding on this fascinating topic!#futureproofAfrica

“What is the last thing that blew your mind?” Aaron Frank, principal faculty member at Singularity University, has an extensive background in life science and communication, with a specialization in augmented and virtual reality (VR). He researches and reports on trends affecting business. Singularity University is a global community that uses expanding technologies to take on some of the planet's greatest challenges. Through its extensive platform comprised of learning and innovation resources, Singularity intends to empower people to meet problems head-on and find solutions via a network of experts in AI, robotics, and digital biology. Frank recounts several stories of businesses that have seen incredible expansion due to virtual world technology, such as a billion-dollar real estate business that has completely adopted virtual activity, which allows for all their employees to gather online, from wherever they are in the world. But the environments are larger and more detailed than most would ever imagine, with interactive campuses that allow users to take on all sorts of activities in the virtual world. In business, and in play, Frank discusses how the technology has broken through to higher levels and provides users with vivid, intense experiences virtually. He gives an insightful look at the virtual worlds being designed today that allow users to experience big events, such as concerts and festivals, and even political debates, as an avatar, which enables them to interact and communicate with other avatars. And Frank outlines some of the newest technology being introduced by global giants such as Facebook and others. He provides an overview of Facebook's new Venues product, which utilizes 360 VR cameras to capture events. Facebook's entry into the VR space will allow users to enjoy live events such as major concerts, and sports, and attend premieres of big movies, all over the globe, and experience them with their friends from anywhere. And while VR technology is fifteen or more years old, the latest components that allow for real, multiple users shared experiences are only in their nascent stages. The technology expert details some of the other opportunities for VR environments, such as security and protection. Frank explains how we can expect the future of location and perimeter security to be 100% virtual, in that security personnel will no longer be doing foot patrols in actual space but will be walking a virtual space instead. As virtual worlds merge with the real world, the stuff of science fiction novels and movies will become our actual reality. Frank states that by design, Singularity University focuses only on the positive ways that technology can be utilized, but he acknowledges that negative applications of technology are certainly within the realm of possibility. Frank delves into some of the current concerns that many people have with technology advances such as privacy issues and a general fear of a surveillance state. And he points out that while VR is incredibly interesting and has many positive applications, VR environments offer little privacy in that everything that is done, looked at, etc. is entirely trackable. However, as Frank states, blockchain technology, which is essentially a list of records called blocks that are linked using cryptography, may deliver some additional privacy and anonymity that will allay users' anxiety. Ultimately, however, as networks expand and technology explodes, VR and augmented reality will become a regular part of our daily experience in business, and also for pleasure. And tech companies are racing to provide networks that have the processing power to keep up with innovative design as it advances at breathtaking rates.

AI is a powerful tool that simultaneously solves problems and creates new--and some might say bigger--challenges. We also discuss the role of spirituality and psychedelic medicine in this new future, and how they could play an unexpected and pivotal role in righting the ship.
Aaron Frank, a Boston University alum, works on war games at RAND Corp., intelligence and other security issues. He has also worked at BAE Systems and Booz Allen Hamilton. We discuss his work in computational social science at RAND Corp, which involves various projects in creating predictions for policymakers in DC, particularly involving predictive models for conflicts and foreign affairs. He also discusses the interaction of intelligence agencies in DC, and the interesting dynamics that occur.
Aaron Frank is a writer, speaker and one of the initial hires at Singularity University. Aaron's focus has been on developing technologies, specializing in virtual and augmented reality. Aaron talks to us about the new VR tools enabling people to do fascinating things. How VR is being used to help eliminate the fear of public speaking by providing a VR experience that exposes people beyond their comfortable level to help them overcome the fears. He describes how VR is being used to reduce pain for burn victims by showing them a VR environment where they feel more relaxed and calm which reduces the pain. Will virtual reality reduce peoples' willingness to have real-life interactions? What about augmented reality inside of virtual reality – i.e. holding a coffee cup and feeling the warmth of the cup inside of a virtual reality space. This interview covers a lot of unusual ground that you won't hear on many virtual reality and augmented reality podcasts. Subscribe. Review. Listen.
