After disrupting the hospitality industry twice, first as the founder of Joie de Vivre Hospitality, the second-largest operator of boutique hotels in the U.S., and then as Airbnb's Head of Global Hospitality and Strategy, leading a worldwide revolution in travel, Conley co-founded MEA (Modern Elder Academy) in January 2018 in Baja California, Mexico. If you raise your hand, what's the worst that can happen? You'll either get a yes or a no. Naba Banerjee is Airbnb's Head of Trust and Safety, and she has made it her mission to raise her hand and put herself forward for all the opportunities she can.Naba was born and raised in India and has a father who encouraged her to apply for an engineering course as soon as she was able. Naba moved to the US after her graduation and began working for Walmart in various roles. At Airbnb, Naba is best known for her party ban algorithm. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Airbnb saw a rise in properties being booked for one-night parties, something that is prohibited in its terms and conditions. The introduction of Naba's algorithm resulted in a significant reduction in party bookings and an increase in the banning of those who continuously broke the rules.Naba has five teenage children, and she believes that AI will play a fully integrated role in their future careers.Join us for every episode with hosts Suchi Srinivasan & Corin Lines from BCG to hear meaningful conversations with women in digital, technology, and business.Mentioned in this episode:About Fixable On the new TED podcast Fixable, Francis Frei and Anne Moriss have helped leaders at some of the world's most competitive companies solve all kinds of problems. Chip Conley, a co-founder of Modern Elder Academy (MEA), joins us today in conversation with Drew. Chip is not a graduate of the Hoffman Process, but the work of MEA and the work of the Process both beautifully support growth and change within. ** (See below for the next community conversation with MEA and Hoffman.) Content warning: This episode mentions suicide. Please use your discretion. If you or someone you know is suicidal, please reach out to The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-TALK (8255), or message the Crisis Text Line at 741741. Listen in as Chip shares his life journey of learning on many levels. In mid-life, Chip's world was rocked when he lost friends to suicide. He had his own suicidal thoughts. Realizing that the human changes we go through in mid-life are not supported by our culture, he began to consider what humans really need to navigate the twists and turns of life. Out of this, Modern Elder Academy was born. In his exploration of mid-life, elderhood, and growing wisdom, Chip has come to see that the ultimate spirituality is one that "actually helps you to show up with the most humanity in this lifetime." Our humanity can be deepened and ripened through life if we engage in an exploration of and conversation in an understanding of our own spiritual nature. As Chip wisely says, wisdom isn't taught, it's shared. **While the vast majority of our guests are Process graduates, we occasionally host experts in other modalities of healing that align with the work of the Process. Join Chip in conversation with Liza and Raz Ingrasci: Chip, together with Liza and Raz Ingrasci of the Hoffman Institute, will host another live event - a community conversation with MEA and the Hoffman Institute. These conversations offer insights and powerful approaches for deepening our spirituality and humanity. Register here and add this exciting event to your calendar: Monday, Sept. 25th from 1:00 to 2:30 PT/4:00 - 5:30 ET. Discover more about Chip Conley: Chip Conley is on a midlife mission. So many of my successful clients are experiencing change fatigue, which shows up as exhaustion and burnout. How can we manage the MASSIVE transitions surrounding us--and our stakeholders--right now? When facing these transitions, you have three choices: you can ignore them, fight them, or welcome them. I believe that as marketers, wisdom offers a path to designing smoother life transitions, more engaged teams and customers, and better overall well-being. But it takes practice and time to cultivate. In this new episode, My wonderful guest Chip Conley and I will give you some practical ways to wisely manage through transitions. You're in for a treat to learn directly from Chip, a world traveller, storyteller, hospitality trailblazer, surfer, Airbnb advisor, and modern-day Joseph Campbell. In addition to 5 bestselling books, he co-founded the Modern Elder Academy, expanding beyond Baja to Santa Fe, New Mexico. Tune in this power-packed episode of The Mindful Marketer show —Marketing with Wisdom in the New World With Chip Conley. Key points covered in this episode: ✔️ Many companies have no problem setting financial goals. But when it comes to developing their post-pandemic vision, they're struggling & having troubles. We all need a little more wellness and wisdom as we retool and prepare for 2022. ✔️ The pandemic has helped us to see that wisdom is not taught but shared. As the iconic boutique hotelier who helped Airbnb's founders turn their fast-growing tech start-up into a global hospitality brand, Chip Conley defines wisdom as "good judgment based on pattern recognition." This skill is essential yet so challenging for marketers to learn or teach others to do. ✔️ Resilience buys you time, and adaptability buys you a future. In 2020, Airbnb Inc. was in an existential crisis and had to get rid of 25% of its employees. Chip shares that now Airbnb is worth more than Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt, and Four Seasons Hotels combined, worth $120 billion. "I joined the company nine years ago— it was not worth $120 because it was a small tech startup in San Francisco. But what my mentee CEO Brian Chesky did is he went out, and he learned resilience is the key in the short term and adaptability is the key in the long term." ✔️ Find time to "spy on the divine." Nature has a lot to teach us about adaptability, interconnectedness, resilience and beauty. Chip shares that devoting three hours a day in three days a week to going to new places he hadn't been to before and just noticing things allows the brain to move to a more innovative place. ✔️ The question of "What business are you in?" is a beautiful wisdom opener that allows you to think about your lessons and your differentiator. The wisdom of being in survival mode and having to move quickly into the innovation mode can be tough. It takes asking the right question and imagining possibilities that may not be obvious to thrive in the years to come. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Lisa Nirell of EnergizeGrowth™ LLC helps courageous marketers and CEOs accelerate growth and get promoted faster. He serves on the board of Encore.org and the advisory board for the Stanford Center for Longevity. www.ChipConley.com Key Takeaways People underestimate how much life they have ahead of them when they retire. Purpose, wellness, and community are lost. Midlife is a period of “middle-essence” — an adult version of adolescence with hormonal and emotional changes as you transition from adulthood into “elderhood.” Ageism is rampant in America because of our cult of youth, beauty, and athleticism—equating a declining body with overall decline as a human. It is the only socially acceptable bias that still exists in mainstream society. Anti-aging creams are essentially “anti-women” creams because they send a message that women are not supposed to have wrinkles. Learning how to look your age and feel good about it is owning your originality. The quickest to mortality is to have everything done for you. Too much hospitality can be harmful.
Why is it that we find it harder to accept and adapt to change as we grow older? On today's show, Darius talks to rebel hospitality entrepreneur, New York Times bestselling author, and fellow Austinite, Chip Conley who shares with us his distilled wisdom on navigating change and mid-life. At the age of 26, he founded Joie de Vivre Hospitality (JdV), transforming an inner-city motel into the second largest boutique hotel brand in America. At the age of 50, after 24 years of being the CEO, Chip felt the need to move on. But this was not an easy transition as he found himself uncomfortable and questioning his self-worth for a while. It was not long before he found his calling once again as Airbnb's Head of Global Hospitality and Strategy. Today, he acts as the company's Strategic Advisor for Hospitality and Leadership. We talk a great deal about his new passion project, Modern Elder Academy. At MEA, Chip is helping folks better stave off a mid-life crisis. You will learn about the inevitability of change, and the need to let go of your emotional baggage. And how you can overcome your compulsive and admiration seeking nature as you make this transition. About the guest The iconic boutique hotelier who helped Airbnb's founders turn their fast-growing tech start-up into a global hospitality brand, Chip Conley is a New York Times bestselling author whose manifesto on ageism, Wisdom@Work: The Making of a Modern Elder, is inspired by his experience of being both a mentor and an intern in his 50s. After selling the company he started as a rebel entrepreneur at age 26, Joie de Vivre Hospitality, Chip wasn't sure what was next. He could have retired at age 52. But the young founders of Airbnb came calling. He served as Airbnb's Head of Global Hospitality and Strategy for four years — while also being CEO Brian Chesky's mentor — and continues today as a Strategic Advisor to the company's leadership. While writing Wisdom@Work, Chip was inspired to build the world's first “midlife wisdom school,” the Modern Elder Academy, with a 3-acre oceanfront campus in Baja California Sur, Mexico. Chip is an active mentor to six young CEO founders in the hospitality/tech world and serves on the boards of the Burning Man Project, Encore.org and the advisory board for the Stanford Center for Longevity. He believes curiosity is the elixir of life and has taken up learning Spanish and surfing at age 58.
We often think of wisdom as flowing downhill, but that's not the case. Young workers and more seasoned employees have so much to offer each other, especially with the fast-paced changes in technology today. Instead of judging different generations, turn those feelings into curiosity so that you can learn. The world needs a different perspective on aging. We are going to be younger longer; it's time to think of middle age not just as a time to “wind down” but as a new opportunity to grow. By continuing to try new things and explore perspectives, the aging generation can avoid becoming “elderly” and instead be a “modern elder.” To dive deeper into the idea of creating a new narrative around age in the workplace, I've brought on rebel hospitality entrepreneur and New York Times bestselling author, Chip Conley. At age 26 he founded Joie de Vivre Hospitality (JdV), transforming one inner-city motel into the second largest boutique hotel brand in America. After running his company as CEO for 24 years, he sold it and soon the young founders of Airbnb asked him to help transform their promising start-up into the world's leading hospitality brand. Chip served as Airbnb's Head of Global Hospitality and Strategy for four years and today acts as the company's Strategic Advisor for Hospitality and Leadership. THE SERVANT WARRIOR “Let's retire retirement.” - Chip Conley Highlights - Karmic Capitalism - When you create joy for your employees, they create joy for your customers, and it ultimately comes back to you. We should no longer live our lives in three phases: learn, earn and burn. Perennials - People in their 60s, 70s, 80s whose spirits are ageless. We are constantly renewing and alive. A modern elder is someone who is not appreciated with reverence but for their relevance. Research shows that people who have a positive view of aging live seven years longer. If you have integrity, you don't live your life in two different ways. As you get older, you learn to edit out the things that don't allow you to be integrated. Liminality is the change that happens during mid-life. Intergenerational collaboration needs age diversity which is just as important as any other kind of diversity. A modern elder has reciprocity which involves listening and giving back. BGBS 019: Becoming a Modern ElderHow a passion for hospitality, writing, and business fueled Chip Conley to start (and eventually sell) the global boutique hotel group, Joie de Vivre, only to find himself as the “Modern Elder” at a crazy, high growth startup called AirBnB, and rediscover what it was he was always meant to do… At 52 after selling the cool and rebel hotel brand he had started at 26, he could have retired. By today's standards he should have retired… but the young founders of Airbnb came calling. He served as Airbnb's Head of Global Hospitality and Strategy for four years — while also being CEO Brian Chesky's mentor — and continues today as a Strategic Advisor to the company's leadership. Quotes: [9:46] “When I said to my father at age 12 that I wanted to be a writer when I grew up, he said he could send me to therapy.” [16:07] “If I was going to start my own thing in the future and learning from somebody's already doing it, it's probably the fastest way for me to learn.” [19:14] “I sort of history of proving people wrong and doing something that seems a little odd at first, but it turns out it's ahead of the trend.” [22:14] “There are very few companies whose mission statement is also in the brand name.” [40:16] “I came to realize we were not in the Boutique hotel business, but we were in the identity refreshment business.” [51:14] “There's something called pattern recognition and artificial intelligence is about pattern recognition, but human intelligence is about pattern recognition as is wisdom. Wisdom is another way to describe pattern recognition.” [55:27] “What's important to hear here is that the social narrative which is, you know, you hit your midlife crisis and then it's all downhill from there, it's not actually accurate.” [58:50] “A musician must make music, an artist must paint, a poet must write, if he is to be ultimately at peace with himself. What a man can be, he must be. This need we call self-actualization… It refers to man's desire for self-fulfillment, namely to the tendency for him to become actually in what he is potentially: to become everything one is capable of becoming.” Links Mentioned On Our Show: chipconley.com Wisdom @ Work Modern Elder Academy Peak FB @chipconleyauthor, Insta @chipconley, LinkedIn Abraham H.
